TIFF: Hidden Figures Showcase + Early Queen of Katwe Reactions + Bonus The Handmaiden

Hidden Figures screened 30 minutes of the film plus had a Q&A earlier today with its stars. Reaction to the footage was quite positive:

Article from THR on the Q&A: It all went smashingly well for Hidden Figures, which Melfi said he made "in the hope [the central trio of women] will be hidden no more." The clips looked quite polished and played very well, with several of them — and the trailer that came at the end — receiving applause.... Henson then turned serious, saying she hoped the movie would "give hope to people to dream a different dream," and noting, "If I'd known about these women coming up, maybe I'd have aspired to be a rocket scientist." Spencer pointed out, "No women were mentioned in Apollo 13," and then broke down: "I'm sad that Dorothy [Vaughn, her character] and Mary [Jackson, Monae's character] can't see this day, but I'm proud that Katherine Johnson [Henson's character, who is 98] will." Henson added, "This movie represents what she should be thinking about right now. We need it right now.">

Meanwhile, Queen of Katwe officially premiered tonight (Lupita looked incredible, as expected).

Geoff Berkshire/Variety: “Queen of Katwe” doesn’t veer from the family-friendly inspirational sports movie playbook — there’s a plucky protagonist looking for a way out, a hardworking single mom concerned about false hopes, a committed coach seeking personal redemption. But the Disney release from veteran helmer Mira Nair is quietly radical in enough ways to make you cheer despite the cliches... the film’s strongest assets are undoubtedly its actors. Nalwanga is a natural, and if she’s a bit too mature to credibly play Phiona in the film’s earliest scenes, the authenticity and spirit she brings to her character’s empowering journey mitigate any quibbles. Oyelowo further establishes himself as one of today’s finest leading men, bringing deep emotional reserves, an innate sense of goodness, and a playful side that earn Robert a memorable place in the substantial canon of onscreen coaches. Rounding out the principal trio, Nyong’o is simply radiant in her first live action role since winning an Oscar for “12 Years a Slave.” She imbues what could have been a stock mother figure with such inner fire that Harriet feels worthy of a movie all her own. And the most exciting thing about seeing a film like “Queen of Katwe” come out of a major Hollywood studio is that that idea suddenly seems a little more possible.

Screen Daily/Tim Grierson: Queen Of Katwe tells a potentially touching story in the stodgiest of ways, its recounting of the journey of a young Ugandan chess prodigy sensitively rendered but also far too formulaic. Perhaps it’s simplistic to say that director Mira Nair has fashioned a good-looking but Disney-fied version of actual events, and yet the studio’s predictably uplifting-at-all-costs blandness slowly but methodically drains the material of its richness.

Sheri Linden/The Hollywood Reporter: Hits every note of plucky positivity so squarely on the head that it leaves little room for audience involvement.

Finally, while already sitting on an 89% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes (76 on metacritic), The Handmaiden was a feature presentation, so here's a couple reactions out of Toronto to it as well:

The Verge/Emily Yoshida: ... There is a deep, festering malady at the heart of The Handmaiden, exacerbated by idle fantasy, cultural projection and denial. The men who torment the female heroines do so because they hate some part of themselves — a part of themselves they've been made to hate by circumstances larger than themselves... The consensual scenes are executed with joy and creativity, if voyeuristically. But the hottest scene in the whole film is probably its tamest, involving little more than a thimble and a tooth. It's a reminder that Park doesn't need to bring the X-rated fireworks to still be capable of producing edge-of-your-seat tension out of shared glances, and the deceptive simplicity of a good edit. The Handmaiden's puzzle-like plot makes such fine-tuning look easy. But many of its more difficult thematic questions are left provocatively unanswered.

The movie is based on the play 'Blackbird'. From IMBD: "When a young woman unexpectedly arrives at an older man's workplace, looking for answers, the secrets of the past threaten to unravel his new life. Their confrontation will uncover buried memories and unspeakable desires. It will shake them both to the core."

ONTD Original: Celebs who urged you to vote, but didn't vote themselves

The US Presidential Election is on Tuesday November 8 this year, and celebrities are already hard at work trying to get young voters to hit the polls on election day. Although celebrities want you to believe that they care about getting the word out on the importance of voting, are these celebrities actually walking the walk like their "Rock The Vote" campaign urges? Let's take a look at some of the celebrities who have told you to "Rock The Vote" but haven't rocked it themselves.

Darren Criss: In 2014, Darren Criss was part of a star-studded "Rock The Vote" parody video of Lil Jon's "Turn Down For What," titled "Turn Out For What," that urged young people to vote in the 2014 Midterm Election.

In an investigation, it was revealed that 5 of the 14 celebrities who appeared in the video didn't actually turn up to vote in the midterm during the previous election in 2010, and voting records for 6 other celebrities who took part in the video could not be located. One of those celebrities who didn't vote was Darren Criss, who said he was turning out to vote in support of education. Shameful, isn't it?

Lena Dunham: Lena Dunham has a history of telling people to vote while not voting herself. Despite making a widely-discussed video for the Obama campaign, Lena Dunham didn't vote in the 2012 election.

Lena didn't vote during the 2010 midterm election either, even though she urged young people to vote in the 2014 Midterm Election during Lil Jon's "Turn Out For What" video. She said that she was turning out for reproductive rights in the video.

50 Cent: Back in 2004, 50 Cent was one of the celebrities who had take part in P. Diddy's Citizen Change "Vote Or Die" campaign. It was revealed that he wasn't even registered to vote.

Paris Hilton: Paris Hilton was also a part of P. Diddy's Citizen Change "Vote Or Die" campaign. Just like 50 Cent, Paris Hilton was also not registered to vote. When asked about the revelation, Paris Hilton's PR rep had no comment.

Whoopi Goldberg: Whoopi Goldberg has been a longtime supporter of the "Rock The Vote" campaign. In 2008, she was featured in the Peanuts "Rock The Vote" campaign video.

Whoopi didn't vote during the 2010 midterm election, even though she urged young people to vote in the 2014 Midterm Election during Lil Jon's "Turn Out For What" video.

E.J. Johnson: In 2014, E.J. Johnson appeared in Lil Jon's "Turn Out For What" video, where he said he was turning out to vote in support of marriage equality, even though he never voted in the 2010 Midterm Election.

Natasha Lyonne: Natasha Lyonne also appeared in Lil Jon's "Turn Out For What" video, where she revealed that she would be turning out for vote in support of prison reform during the 2014 Midterm Election. Natasha was also one of the celebrities who didn't vote during the 2010 Midterm Election.

Tom Hiddleston's Career Might Permanently Suffer After Taylor Swift PR Fling

Tom Hiddleston, along with Swift, has been widely mocked for his bizarre PR antics with Swift, such as posing on a rocky beach and wearing that notorious tank top that says "I <3 T.S." His Marvel costars have also publicly joked about it. But will his career be able to recover?

Multiple Hollywood outlets are saying that Taylor Swift was "napalm" for his image and career prospects. It's no secret that he was and is desperate to be a leading Hollywood celeb instead of just a respected, well-known actor. Hiddleston's PR team seems desperate to sink its claws back into those James Bond casting rumours. His publicist"sources" said to Gossip Cop that he is still in consideration for James Bond (lol). Gossip Cop insists that the rumors about Daniel Craig being offered $150 million to remain as Bond are not true.

The next two movies on his IMDB page are Thor: Ragnarok and Kong: Skull Island with queen hippie Oscar-winner Brie Larson. If Tom was hoping to boost his status by dating Taylor, it seems to have backfired terribly.

ONTD, do u think his career will suffer?

Ayumi Hamasaki Announces Separation from Husband

Ayumi Hamasaku posted on her official fanclub (Team Ayu) blog that she will be separating from her husband of three years Tyson Bodkin. The two met while Ayu was on vacation at Los Angeles in 2013 and got married a year later. He is a medical student at University of California Los Angeles. Below is a translation of her post regarding the divorce provided by the source.

Today, there’s something I need to tell you all.

My partner, the man who walked this road with me together for three years, and I have decided to part ways. He is walking his own path, and I will walk mine.

As far as this announcement goes, I’m writing here because I wanted you to hear it from me first. For now, I’m focused on rehearsals for the TA tour and recording new songs and will keep on going!!!

Have a lovely Sunday.

Divorce Rumors prior to Announcement
Throughout their three year marriage, Japanese media have been speculating that the two would divorce. One particular notable case was when she posted a picture of her hugging a man thought to be someone other than her husband with the following hashtags: #let’s forget something little by little“, #let’s anticipate a new something, #bye bye my love and #hello my love".

Ayu responded with the following statement the same day this was reported by the media.

“Got nothing to report or whatsoever? I just used a social network during a fun night. It’s not as if anything sad has happened either. Even if, there just are such days. I’m human after all.”

It later turned out that the hashtags are actually lyrics from her song "you & me", but the disconnect between these hashtags, the image, and her relationship status invited continued speculation about an impending divorce.

This separation marks Ayu's second divorce as she was previously married to Austrian actor Manuel Schwartz.
