Angelina Jolie Appointed Honorary Citizen of Sarajevo
Angelina Jolie has been named an honorary citizen of Sarajevo for her 2011 film “In the Land of Blood and Honey.”
Sarajevo’s regional government credited the film Jolie wrote and directed with bringing awareness to the three-year Bosnian War, which began in 1992.
Each year the government honors a foreign national for promoting humanity, democracy and tolerance. They chose Jolie for "keeping the truth about wartime events in Sarajevo and Bosnia-Hercegovina alive,” Us magazine reported.
“In the Land of Blood and Honey,” which was nominated for a Golden Globe, depicts a love story set against the background of the Bosnian War. In the film, a Bosnian Muslim woman and an Orthodox Christian Serbian man have an affair before the war, and meet again when the woman is a prisoner of her former lover’s army unit.
Jolie also won the “Heart of Sarajevo” award at the Sarajevo Film Festival last year.
In addition to using her film background to bring awareness to the Bosnian War, Jolie has spent the last decade using her celebrity to tackle global issues as a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations.
Jolie was promoted this month to special envoy of the U.N. High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR).
Last weekend, she was spotted in Ecuador visiting Colombian refugees and staying in the Galapagos Islands with her family and new fiancée, Brad Pitt.
Jolie has been invited to a ceremony in Sarajevo on May 3 to officially celebrate her honorary citizenship. She has yet to respond to the invite.

Jolie has visited various countries over the past decade as a goodwill ambassador for the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees. The agency said in a statement Monday that it was her first trip as special envoy since her appointment earlier this month.
The agency said Jolie was on her third trip to Ecuador to assess the situation of thousands of refugees who have fled violence in neighboring Colombia. She previously visited the country in 2002 and 2010.
During a two-day visit, Jolie met with impoverished Colombian refugees in northern Sucumbios province and talked with Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino.
"I really encourage the government to continue their tradition of assistance to vulnerable families in need," Jolie said, according to the U.N. agency's statement.
There are currently about 56,000 Colombian refugees living in Ecuador, plus thousands of others who are seeking asylum.

It wasn't your average Jolie-Pitt family meeting.
On a recent spring day, Brad Pitt gathered his six kids -- Maddox, 10, Pax, 8, Zahara, 7, Shiloh, 5, and twins Vivienne and Knox, 3 -- as he presented love Angelina Jolie with a very special present: A tablet-shaped diamond engagement ring -- estimated at 16 carats and worth $500,000 -- which he helped design with jeweler Robert Procop.
"Angelina cried and smiled" at the proposal, a confidante tells the new Us Weekly, out now.
And the children, who had been extremely eager for their parents to wed after seven years together, were equally overjoyed, the source adds. "Everyone hugged once she put [the ring] on. She went around and showed it to each of the kids."
As the world now knows, Jolie, 36, quietly debuted that long-awaited ring at an April 11 private viewing at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, with startling photos and a confirmation from jeweler Procop and then Pitt's manager emerging two days later.
"Angie considers herself bonded to Brad for life," adds the source.
