Constance Wu, star of Crazy Rich Asians: ‘I’ve lost parts for being outspoken’ https://t.co/4AM99IuWDZ

-Constance Wu talks about the industry backlash for speaking out against Scarlett Johansson (Ghost and the Shell), Matt Damon (The Great Wall) Whitewashing, and Casey Affleck (Sexual Harassment + Oscar Nom despite that).
-In Hollywood, she was told by agents and managers to remain apolitical. She says those people don't represent her anymore.
-There wasn't a blueprint for success for Asian Americans in the industry and she felt lonely and scared because she wasn't sure what she would've done if acting didn't work out.
- “I am very impulsive and reactive. I have always been a person who is kind of outspoken, but nobody knew who I was before. Now I have this weird thing called fame, and I wasn’t looking for it, I didn’t ask for it, but if you have it, you might as well use it for something good. And the best thing I think I can do is help amplify the voices of people who don’t feel heard.”
-On Calling out Casey Affleck- “People got mad at me. I have lost a lot of parts because of that and I probably will never be a member of the Academy … But that’s OK.”
On Scarlett Johansson- "I'm not blaming Scarlett. She isn’t out there like, ‘Let me go choose the part that’s going to make people mad the most. But the only way she’ll know that she’s doing that is if we begin a conversation and say, ‘It’s not your fault, but this is something that’s important to a population."
-Struggled with accusations of being called an “unrefined banana” (yellow on the outside, white on the inside). Grew up in a predominantly white community where she stood out because she was Asian. Struggled with it more when she became famous b/c she does a lot of Americanized things since she was born and raised in America.
