NEW YORK (AP) -- Facebook will start requiring people to switch to a new profile format known as Timeline, making photos, links and personal musings from the past much easier to find (no!!!!).

Timeline is essentially a scrapbook of your whole life on Facebook, compared with a snapshot of you today found on Facebook's traditional profile page. Once activated, Timeline replaces the current profile.

Although some people have already voluntarily switched to Timeline, Facebook hadn't made that mandatory. Beginning Tuesday, Facebook is telling some users that they have seven days to clean up their profiles before Timeline gets automatically activated. Facebook is rolling out the requirement to others over the next few weeks.

At some point, even those who haven't logged on to Facebook in a while will be automatically switched.

Timeline doesn't expose anything that wasn't available for sharing in the past. Many of those older posts had always been available. People could get to them by continually hitting "Older Posts," although most wouldn't have bothered. Timeline allows people to jump to the older material more quickly.

Timeline also doesn't necessarily reflect the fact that your circle of friends has likely expanded in recent years. A party photo you posted in 2008 to a small group of friends would be more visible to relatives, bosses (wut) and others you may have added as friends since then.

You'll have a week (!!!!) to curate the Timeline by moving stuff around, hiding photos or featuring them more prominently on your page.

Some things to consider:

— You can change privacy settings on individual items to control who has access. You might want to narrow embarrassing photos to your closest friends or delete some posts completely, or at least hide them so only you can see them.

— You can change the date on a post. For example, if you took a few months to post photos from a trip to Portugal, you can move them to appear with other posts from the time you took that trip. You can also add where you were, retroactively using a location feature that Facebook hadn't offered until recently.

— For major events in your life, you can click on a star to feature them more prominently. You can hide the posts you'd rather not showcase.

— Besides your traditional profile photo — your headshot — you can add what Facebook calls a cover photo. It's the image that will splash across the top and can be a dog, a hobby or anything else that reflects who you are. Keep in mind the dimensions are more like a movie screen than a traditional photo, so a close-up portrait of your face won't work well, but one of you lying horizontally will. But you don't even have to be in it.

— You can add things before you joined Facebook, back to when you were born. Life events can include when you broke your arm and whom you were with then, or when you spoke your first word or got a tattoo. You can add photos from childhood or high school as well.

— If you feel overwhelmed with so many posts to go through, start with your older ones. Those are the ones you'd need to be most careful about because you had reason to believe only a few friends would see them.

— Click on Activity Log to see all of your posts at a glance and make changes to them one by one. Open Facebook in a new browser tab first, though. That way, you can have one tab for the log and the other for the main Timeline.

Feminist Icon Kathleen Hanna Becomes a Juggalette Icon

0
0

It's not the first place we'd expect to find Kathleen Hanna's name, but there it is, subtly tacked onto the credits for Neal Medlyn's Wicked Clown Love, a 2012 experimental work "built around the music and culture of hip-hop duo Insane Clown Posse, their devoted fan base the Juggalos, and other forms of male bonding and ritual." Showing at the Kitchen next weekend, Wicked Clown Love's hammy event description on the venue Web site elaborates:

Neal Medlyn's latest "bomb ass music based extravaganza" to quote the artist, is . . . will revolve around Medlyn's dark specter versions of ICP songs, male bonding activities, flashlight wrestling, terror and horror, face paint, underground Midwestern horror rap, Faygo showers, clown love, and much more. "Fuckin all out buck wild behavior is to be expected," Medlyn says. "This will be the freshest presentation of all time. This will be the Wicked Shit. Wicked Clown Love. The most chaotic fucking phenomenon of the year."

Starring Neal Medlyn, Farris Craddock, Carmine Covelli and a variety of monsters. Lighting design by Madeline Best. Set design by Kathleen Hanna. Costumes by Larry Krone.

Yes, according to the press release, that Kathleen Hanna. The riot-grrrl doyenne. The public intellectual. The one people yelled for at Friday night's Portlandia event.

Wicked Clown Love is Neal Medlyn's sixth entry into an absurd series of pop-star/music performances in which a white guy with "wacky frames for my glasses," "greasy hair," and "a slightly distended stomach" mimics overly emotive pop-music legends. His previous five installments tackled Lionel Richie (Lionel Richie Opera), Phil Collins (Coming in the Air Tonight), Prince (Unpronounceable Symbol), Britney Spears (...Her's a Queen), and Miley Cyrus (Brave New Girl). Medlyn is also known for faithfully re-enacting a Beyoncé concert-DVD and wearing black body tights "with a hole neatly cut to allow his penis to hang out," as the Times so delicately put it last year.

Medlyn's Hanna connections are easy to trace. Last year, the cabaret actor worked with her partner Adam Horowitz on Neal & Bridget Are F**king, and Adam is Watching. Medlyn also frequently performs alongside Kenny Mellman, keyboardist for Hanna's currently recording band the Julie Ruin, and Carmine Covelli, who is both Horowitz's collaborator on a documentary about New Yorker art critic Peter Schjeldahl (wait, what x 2) and the Julie Ruin's drummer.

Medlyn's been working on this project since last summer, when he recounted his conflicted sense of belonging at the Gathering of the Juggalos in a piece for Salon. The theatrical result, Wicked Clown Love, isn't Downtown's first Juggalo-inspired performance piece (that happened in fall of 2010), but it's certainly the first one with a feminist icon on the crew. And you thought the Jack White connection was bonkers?

Can't wait to see what Hanna came up with for the set--at the moment, we're imagining walls Sharpie-scrawled with the word "NEDEN" everywhere.

Lena Headey Teases Loss For Cersei In 'Game Of Thrones' Season Two

0
0

For all of the things that we love and obsess over on HBO's brilliant "Game Of Thrones", there are definitely a couple elements that we love to hate. Cersei Lannister, played by Lena Headey, is one of them.

George R.R. Martin gets the lion's share of credit here for Cersei's creation, but we also have to hand it to Headey and her wonderfully cold, calculated and often infuriating (in a good way) portrayal. MTV News caught up with Headey recently at HBO's Golden Globes after-party, where she gave a little preview of what Cersei will be up to in season two.

"She loses things that she loves and she loses her mind slowly," Headey said. "And she kind of goes to war with Tyrion."

Those of us who've read Martin's books might have a pretty good idea to what she's referring to, although we can never be certain. I, for one, would welcome an unexpected death that wasn't in the second book, "A Clash Of Kings."

Speaking of Cersei's war with Tyrion, we asked Headey what she enjoys most about her scenes with Golden Globe and Emmy-winner Peter Dinklage, particularly because the dynamic between them is so electric onscreen.

"Because I know him and we’ve got a real comfortable relationship and he’s so good that you raise everything," she said of the joys of working with Dinklage. "You raise your game to join in and I love that, that’s a challenge."

Saint Etienne - 'Tonight' (new single)

Saint Etienne, the stalwart British band of such songs like Only Love Can Break Your Heart, A Good Thing and Method of Modern Love, have released the first single for their new album  'Words and Music by Saint Etienne'.

The song is titled 'Tonight' and is available for free download for a while off their website http://www.saintetienne.com/

From their website:

Tonight is the first single from Saint Etienne's forthcoming album - their first in seven years.

Like the album it's taken from, Tonight is all about the primal and atavistic pull that all good pop music exerts, about how the unadulterated thrill of a great band or gig can sometimes feel like a hotline straight to your heart.

The track is produced by Xenomania lynchpin Tim Powell (Girls Aloud, Kylie, Sugababes), and mixed by Richard X, and in Bob's own words, "Tonight is about the anticipation of going to see your favourite group. For some reason, I imagine this show is at the Forum in Kentish Town. The whole album is about the power of pop, how it affects and shapes your life."

Here's a 4:38 edit:

Smash's Katharine McPhee talks NBC's new musical drama and life after 'Idol'

0
0

By now you’ve probably seen either a commerical or a billboard for NBC’s highly anticipated (and hugely publicized) new musical drama Smash, which premieres on the network Feb. 6 at 10pm. Former American Idol contestant Katharine McPhee stars as struggling actress Karen Cartwright, competing for the leading role in a new musical based on the life of Marilyn Monroe. It’s an incredibly ambitious series (hatched by an idea from none other than Steven Spielberg) that mixes backstage drama with elaborate musical numbers. And McPhee has already drawn buzz for this star-making role. “I think that’s a nice way of looking at it,” says the actress of this beingKatharine McPhee 2.0. “I was really surprised in the trailers when they said, ‘And introducing…Katharine McPhee.’ But it is a new introduction because people don’t know me as an actress.” EW chatted with McPhee on the Smash set and talked about meeting Spielberg for the first time and her fight to get roles after American Idol.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: So I heard you actually met Steven Spielberg after Idol?
KATHARINE MCPHEE: Yeah I did. He brought me in. It was the most bizarre thing. I  remember just being obviously elated about meeting him. It was just a general meeting. They said just go to his offices at Dreamworks at Universal Studios. He had me in his office and I met Stacey Snider. They were just the most lovely, sweet people. I was just so excited. He was asking me questions about what I wanted to do and my aspirations. I told him I wanted to act and I had been acting and before Idol that was sort of my dream.

Clearly Idol made you a name but do you think it also held you back?
There’s a lot of reasons you could speculate why I didn’t get parts. There’s always a stigma. Not just a stigma with reality stars but it’s just like anything else: the actress was too tall, she’s too short, she’s too fat, she too thin. There’s always some sort of obstacle to overcome. In my case, yeah, I’m not going to lie and say there weren’t certain casting people that didn’t wanna see me because they didn’t think I could act. That’s fine. If anything, it made me more determined.

In my view, I’ve had tons of success but, in the way the world views success and they expectIdols to do, mine has just been a longer journey to get there. And I’m grateful for it. It just makes the journey that much sweeter in the end.

Have you had to do research on Monroe?

You grow up with knowing who Marilyn Monroe was and you have this idea in your head. It’s always the heightened Marilyn. YouTube is the most amazing thing and a lot of movies. But I found the stuff on YouTube is the best. I feel like people have made her more of a caricature of herself. She was really more of a simple woman. Marilyn as a person was very humble and quiet. It was a character she chose.

Smash was announced last May. Are you anxious for it to finally premiere?
So anxious. First of all I got cast like last February. Then we shot it like March/April. Then we got picked up and people were so excited for the show. Upfronts were so exciting but then we found out we were midseason and I was like, “NOOOOOOOOO!”

One-hour dramas are a long commitment. Are you in it to win it?
I’m in it to win it. I hope the show is a major success. I’ve moved my whole life here. Fingers crossed. I hope it lasts for five years! It would be great.

lana del rey's album leaks

0
0
You remember that meme from a couple years back about how everything seems more epic when it's set to Sigur Rós music? That's a pretty nice way of summing up how I feel about Lana Del Rey's Born to Die album, which leaked Tuesday (January 24) and which you may very well be listening to on your computer/ mobile device at this very moment.

Simply put, it is a record that is positively brimming with atmospherics — soaring, sonorous strings, echoing electronic boom-bap, morose, maudlin guitar crescendos — all of which imbue it with a truly epic (if not unnecessarily dramatic) scope. Lasagna Del Rey's critics will undoubtedly point out that scope as nothing more than cover for her perceived shortcomings as a performer, but it still makes Born to Die a rather thrilling headphones experience. This is an album that sounds like it cost a million bucks to make — mostly because it probably did.

This is not to say that Born to Die is a bad album — far from it. In fact, it's certainly w-a-a-y better than most would've expected (tellingly, even less will admit to that fact), and Del Rey does showcase some rather deft songwriting prowess — or at least a knack for penning a catchy chorus — particularly on the album's few bright moments, like "Off to the Races," "Diet MTN Dew" and "Radio."

The majority of the tracks you've already heard — "Born to Die," "Blue Jeans," "Video Games" — are prominently placed at the front of the album, and the back half does tend to drag a bit, though, aside from all the additional ephemera (which does leave the album sounding a bit same-y, not to mention cribbed from the Portishead playbook, circa 1997), those are perhaps my biggest criticisms about the album.

Girls' Generation to appear on "Live with Kelly" and "The Late Show with David Letterman"

0
0

Girls' Generation has been attempting to make their mark in the US with their debut English song, "The Boys." The girls have already performed the song at the SMTOWN 2011 New York concert and did their first ever fan-signing event in the US.

The girls have been quiet since then, with not much talk of their debut in the US. However, it now seems as if they are back on the attack with two scheduled appearances on some of the top shows in the US. Girls' Generation will be on "The Late Show with David Letterman" on Tuesday, January 31st and then "Live with Kelly" alongside Jennifer Lopez and guest co-host Howie Mandel on Wednesday, February 1st.

While Girls Generation is listed as confirmed guests on the "Live with Kelly" show, they are not for David Letterman. The website also only lists show guests for up to a week at a time, so it will be unconfirmed until later in the week.

You can request to attend the show by clicking on "Late Show Tickets" on CBS.com. To request tickets for the "Live with Kelly" show, you can visit their official website as well. source

CW Orders Pilot from 'Gilmore Girls' Scribe, 'Pushing Daisies' EP

The CW is investing in another female-driven light-hearted doctor project.

The network has given pilot orders to First Cut, a drama with comedic elements revolving around a newly minted doctor, excited to leave her nerdy past behind for a fresh start in the adult professional world who learns that life at the hospital where she works isn't much different than her high school experience.

From CBS Television Studios, Gilmore Girl scribe Jennie Snyder Urman will pen the project and executive produce alongside Pushing Daisies' Dan Jinks.

First Cut reteams Urman with the CW, where she served as a co-EP on its 90210 reboot from 2009-11. The network passed on her female-driven law drama pilot Danni Lowinski last year.

The CW currently has another female-driven doctor drama in its Rachel Bilson fish out of water freshman series Hart of Dixie, which the network picked up for a full season last year.

First Cut joins the young-skewing network's four other drama pilots, including Greg Berlanti's DC Comics-inspired Arrow, the Beauty and the Beast update; and Josh Schwartz's Sex and the City prequel The Carrie Diaries and sudsy crime drama Cult.

Urman is repped by UTA. Jinks, whose feature credits also include Milk and American Beauty, is with WME.

ABC is making it a pair of Beauty and the Beast reboots this pilot season.

The female-skewing network is moving forward with its reimagining of the classic fairy tale set in a mythical, dangerous world where a beautiful and tough princess discovers an unlikely connection with a mysterious beast.

Human Target scribe Jonathan E. Steinberg (Jericho) will pen the project with Gary Fleder (Life Unexpected) and Mary Beth Basile (October Road) attached to executive produce the ABC Studios project through their Mojo Films shingle.

ABC's Beauty and the Beast update comes as the network has found success with freshman fairy tale Once Upon a Time, the dual universe drama revolving around Snow White (Ginnifer Goodwin) and her long-lost daughter (Jennifer Morrison).

It also marks the second Beauty and the Beast project ordered to pilot this month, joining the CW's modern-day take on the 1980s CBS drama that starred Ron Perlman as Vincent (aka the Beast) and Linda Hamilton as Catherine (the Beauty).

Felicity's Jennifer Levin and Brothers and Sisters' Sherri Cooper are attached to pen the project and executive produce alongside Paul Witt, C. Anthony Thomas, Ron Koslow and Bill Haber.

The ABC update is the latest in a long line of remakes of the classic tale.

Disney's 1991 animated feature, featuring the voices of Angela Lansbury and Jerry Orbach, among others, grossed more than $387 million worldwide.

The 1987 CBS live-action drama starring Ron Perlman as Vincent (aka the Beast) and Linda Hamilton and Catherine (the Beauty) ran for three seasons.

More recently, last year's feature adaptation of Alex Finn's 2007 novel Beastly, starring Alex Pettyfer and Vanessa Hudgens, collected $28 million domestically.
