Scary Books That Will Scare The S*** Out Of You

0

I'm not big on overt gore, slasher stories or things that are overly sadistic or cruel. I didn't like Joyce Carol Oates' book Zombie, for example, because it put me inside the mind of a psycho for the entire novel--and it was like an overdose of psychosis. There's only so much of that sort of thing I can take.

These books kept me squarely on the side of the protagonist, which is what I like. At the end of the day, there simply has to be a little sweetness to go home to.

This book frightened me because it featured the thing I fear most of all--the evil that could be lurking about in an ordinary suburban neighborhood, a horror that slithers just beneath the thin veneer of everyday life. I knew people like the characters in this book. It would not take much for me to imagine how their lives could be transmuted into sheer terror by something that understood the nature of their innermost fears.

A modern-day retelling of the Dracula myth, this beautifully constructed work was at once evocative and chilling. It reminded me of why vampires really frightened me as a child, in the pre-Twilight fashion, when they were beings molded out of an ancient evil, predatory creatures that lived among us like wolves in sheeps' clothing.

As creepy as the Academy Award-winning film based on this was, the novel was more disturbing--primarily because of the iconic villain Hannibal Lecter, who was far more frightening (and fascinating) than the killer featured in the story ever thought of being. His "psycho genius" was part of the inspiration for my own novel's villain.

A cult favorite written in an unusual style which is both engrossing and disturbing. It's hard to describe--and hard to put down. You have to read it to understand.

Another classic King tale featuring the scariest vampire I ever remember reading about. King says that modern-day vampires have been ruined because they are all "sparkly," and I agree with him. The vampire in "Salem's Lot" was more Nosferatu than Edward. And there were none of the ridiculous peri-pubescent teenage girl trappings that we read about today. This vampire was simply one of the Undead.

A book in some ways similar to King's classic It, this beautifully written novel is about a group of childhood friends in the summer of 1960 who must confront an ancient and pervasive evil. It reminded me of my own childhood--of the freedom of summer and the fears that went along with the summertime's quasi-independence.

Ray Bradbury is a poet cloaked in a novelist's garb, and I enjoy his descriptions, his dialogue and the way he weaves a tale. This story has a deliciously supernatural element--and, again, is about the evil that is hiding in the most seemingly innocuous places. Besides, circuses are inherently both strange and wonderful--and fraught with the aura of the unknown. How better to introduce that concept than with a tale such as this one

Did Natalie Portman get a boob job?

0

Black Swan Oscar winner Natalie Portman has sparked feverish debate about whether or not she's had a boob job, after she appeared on camera at an American football game looking bustier than before.
The 31-year-old, who gave birth to son Aleph in June 2011, was watching the game in Austin, Texas during a break from shooting the as-yet-untitled new Terrence Malick film.

With co-star Michael Fassbender by her side, a newly blonde Natalie was spotted by the cameras during the ABC broadcast.

While it could very well be a push-up bra, or a consequence of breast-feeding her bub, Twitter fans immediately speculated about the star's potentially enhanced assets.

"Natalie Portman @ the Texas-Baylor game ... boob job? Looks like it!" one user wrote.

"Wait a second, did Natalie Portman get a boob job? Is she pregnant? On the sidelines of Texas game and #wow," another tweeted.

Comments on the YouTube clip ran along the same lines, albeit many of them censored, with dozens of "this has been flagged as spam" messages.

One of the posts that got through was the straight-shooting zinger, "Fake t--- are awesome!"

So, did she or didn't she? Her chest does indeed look (how do we put this delicately?) unusually buoyant? Compare the before and after shots and cast your vote below.

It's Colin Farrell!!!!

Ok, so I have the NY Jets as a client (I work at an advertising agency---not enough liquor to meet that Mad Men status) and they are honestly great to work with. One of the many perks being tickets for our whole agency to attend today's game (where the Jets got their asses handed to them by the Dolphins) in the VIP Green Room complete with an open bar and all that jazz.

I can't even begin to explain what I felt when Colin Farrell strolled on by. I mean, the man has SWAGGER. And it's more than just the way he walks---it wasn't arrogant or anything, just smooth and self assured. No posse---just him and one random dude. I basically stalked him, kinda...totally. He was out where everyone was---for the most part people left him alone. He wore a hat to try and "hide" himself but really---it's COLIN FARRELL. Took until halftime for me to work up the courage to speak to him and I didn't even---I had a friend introduce me, I could barely speak. She told him I was a fan which is a total lie---not so much a fan of Colin as I am a fan of sitting on his face.

In other news: he was SO NICE. AND HOT. AND IRISH, OMG! HE RUBBED MY BACK! and told me not to worry after apologizing 500x over for disturbing his peace! HIS PUT HIS ARM AROUND ME AND HE SMELLS LIKE SPICE, I DUNNO WHAT IT IS BUT WHEN HE TOUCHED ME I THINK I LOST LIKE FIVE BRAIN CELLS BECAUSE I DONT EVEN REMEMBER WHAT HAPPENED AFTER THAT!

I kept my eye on him for the rest of the game---he chatted up with basically everyone who came up to him. He sat in the stadium seats reserved for the VIP area and got annoyed just like everyone else did at every fumble. Ran his hand through his hair, scratched his scruff---dude is stupid hot in person, I swear.

More:

i mean, seriously, what the fuck is that face even?!

AND THEN MYA SHOWS UP!!!!

She is SO TINY! I swear she coulda passed for a twelve year old, she had on a baseball hat real low and walk passed me several times before I started to question it. I approached her during the 4th quarter. She honestly looked shocked---I don't think anyone came up to her the entire time so I guess she wasn't expecting to be bothered. We introduced ourselves (it looked like she was doing homework! Workin' on that degree!) and she was really sweet. Also, stupid pretty. Is it me or do famous ppl actually glow? Must be million dollar facials or some shit. Regardless I walked away humming Case of the Ex.

So yeah, the Jets lost but no fucks were given on my part. I got free booze and food, excellent service, and met two disgustingly HOT celebs! YAY ME!

MISFITS POST: Review of Series 4, Episode 1

0
0

SPOILERS: Do not read this if you have not seen episode 1, series 4 of ‘Misfits’

A new year and some fresh faces have joined the gang. Following Alisha’s (Antonia Thomas) unexpected death and Simon (Iwan Rheon) travelling back into the past to save her, the gang is left two down.

Earlier this year, it was announced that Lauren Socha, who plays Kelly, would also be leaving the show. The audience is informed through Seth (Matthew McNulty) that Kelly has decided to stay in Africa to diffuse landmines which seems something very unlike the character.

Curtis (Nathan Stewart-Jarett) is the only member of the original cast still on the show. There is of course Joe Gilgun’s Rudy and his split personalities to keep things interesting, along with Seth the only member of the group not on community service.

Just like other shows such as Being Human and Doctor Who, that have had major cast changes, it is always a challenge for the writer to introduce new characters, make them likeable and make it work in the context of the show. While Gilgun managed to add another dimension to Misfits after the departure of Robert Sheehan’s Nathan, losing another three members in one go seems like an insurmountable feat to pull off flawlessly. And unfortunately episode one does not manage to do this.

There are two newbies: Finn (Nathan McMullen), a wide-eyed, naïve manchild with an odd sense of humour and an ineptitude for telekinesis; and Jess (Karla Crome), a smart, sarcastic wise-cracker who can see through walls. Out of the pair of them Jess comes across as the more likeable and ‘conventional’ social miscreant compared to Finn. Saying this, there is more to Finn on closer inspection, namely the girl tied to his bed.

Series creator Howard Overman is clearly trying to avoid replicating personalities in order to make sure that Jess and Finn are not seen as replacements but characters in their own right. However, neither of them are as distinct as their predecessors. It is more difficult to pigeonhole them, which in this case is not a good thing because it makes it difficult to get a sense of them.

The audience knew from the start that Nathan was the joker, Simon was the loner, Alisha was the slut, Kelly was the chav and Curtis was the regretful athlete. It was easier for the audience to get a handle on these characters because of the labels, as the series progressed they developed and these associations fell away.

Perhaps, this is a harsh conclusion given that it is just the first episode and hopefully it gets better as the series goes on. That is not to say that the first episode was awful by any means, it just was not on par with the usual quality of comedy and drama that the show is defined by.

Of course there were the serious moments juxtaposed with humour, such as Jess and Finn discussing how they imagined they were each going to kick the bucket. Jess has the conventional growing old and dying in her sleep scenario while Finn wants to go in a drug-fuelled car crash with Angelina Jolie by his side. The way in which Overman can switch from serious to silly in mere moments is superb and he has not lost his touch. But there are times when it is just not as pithy as it has been in the past, particularly with Finn, luckily Jess throws out some zingers to offset this.

The comedy scenes involving Rudy are on form, possibly because Overman knows this character a lot better than his new creations. The scene where the newbies walk in on Rudy at the start of a five knuckle shuffle session with a chocolate bar and a laptop was hilarious.

This week fell into the gangster heist genre and contained the most gory scene in the show’s history to date. Forget Kelly killing a probation worker with a paint can and her foot, the sequence involving Rudy sawing off a man’s hand felt gratuitously violent. The episode may have been paying homage to gangster flicks but it felt unnecessary to see his cut all the way through the wrist until the hand fell off.

Overall this was a so-so opener to the start of the fourth series but due to the big change in cast perhaps fans can forgive the programme for not delivering as well as it has done in the past.

Next time on Misfits… Unsurprisingly, viewers will discover more about Finn and why on earth he is holding a girl prisoner in his bedroom.

Is anyone still watching this? What did you think of the new kids? I love Rudy sfm. I didn't even notice the others were gone tbh, he carries the show.

More Pics of Zoe Saldana as Nina Simone

She has been sporting a black Afro-style wig to play legendary jazz singer Nina Simone.

But Zoe Saldana covered her hair on the set of her new film Nina on Friday, donning a head wrap - one of Simone's signature looks.

The 34-year-old actress embodied the late songstress in her chic ensemble - which consisted of the beige-coloured accessory paired with a matching shift dress and cape.

She accessorised with a pair of tan leather gloves and toted an oversized bag.

Earlier in the day, Saldana was seen filming scenes with a young co-star.

The Avatar was seen balancing the child, who was dressed in a pretty green dress, on her hip.

This time Zoe's costume consisted of a billowing burgundy maxi skirt and a white plunging top, both belted at the waist.

Her outfit was rounded out with some ethnic-style jewellery, including a choker and a headpiece.

Zoe caused controversy when it was first revealed that she had been cast as Simone, with many saying she wasn't 'dark-skinned enough' to play the legendary jazz singer.

But last week in first pictures of the star on the set of highly-anticipated biopic, she showed that she is throwing herself into the role whole-heartedly.

Zoe has been wearing a prosthetic nose and dark make-up to embody Simone for the role.

The decision to cast Zoe as Nina was met with strong criticism with many in Hollywood, including Nina's daughter Simone Kelly.

Simone took to her Facebook page to voice her concerns, writing: 'Appearance-wise this is not the best choice.'

However, Simone then continued to say that she had no problem with the star’s acting ability, but added she would have liked to see a darker-skinned actress such as Viola Davis or Kimberly Elise take the part.

But other stars have come forward to back Zoe in the part, with singer and actress Jill Scott telling black women’s web site Hello Beautiful: 'Zoe is an incredible actress.

'I think that there should be some work done, like a prosthetic nose would be helpful and definitely some darker make-up.’

The synopsis of the motion picture so far only details that it is the story of the jazz musician and classical pianist, including her rise to fame and relationship with her manager Clifton Henderson.

The civil rights activist certainly celebrated women of darker complexions with her track Images (Of a Wayward Soul), which includes the lyrics: ‘She does not know her beauty. She thinks her brown body has no glory.’

Nina, which also stars The Help actor David Oyelowo as Henderson, is due for release in 2013.

Cheerleader (27) who had sex with 17-year-old gets reality show

Jersey Shore producers are developing a show for the criminal cheerleader & her boyfriend.

Who says crime doesn't pay?

The Bengals cheerleader scandalized the nation by admitting to having an affair with 17-year-old high school student Cody York (who is now her boyfriend) - and now Sarah Jones is going to get her own reality TV show.

It is said 495 Productions, the creators of Jersey Shore, courted the 27-year-old, who finally admitted in a Kentucky court earlier this month that she had sex with the 17-year-old boy after months of vehemently denying any wrongdoing.

In exchange for her plea deal Jones was sentenced to five years of diversion -- a form of probation -- but won’t have to register as a sex offender.

The show would reportedly follow the former teacher and her young boyfriend, Cody York, who recently told NBC's "Dateline" that he's not sorry he started an affair with his then-teacher. "Yeah, [the affair] was worth it," he tells "Dateline" tonight when the two sit down to tell their sides of the story. "I never in a million years thought [the arrest and trial] would ever happen."

“A lot of people are going to be outraged I imagine when they find out she's getting a show,” the source says. “She is basically being rewarded for breaking the law!

“She's totally cashing in on her crime, and I'm pretty sure that if it was a 27-year-old man that had pleaded guilty to having sex with his 17-year-old female student he wouldn't have been given a TV show!

"This whole scandal has turned into one big payday for Sarah. She was boasting that she 'made bank' for her Dateline interview last week and now she is going to be paid for appearing in her own reality TV show. It's sick."

Jones gave an exclusive interview to Dateline on NBC and finally came clean about her relationship with Cody York, who is now her boyfriend.

The former Cincinnati Bengals cheerleader said: “Yeah, what I did was wrong… And I feel guilty as to what happened and that other people were hurt in this in a sense from our families having to go through this.”

Earlier this month the couple brazenly left court together holding hands.

York, now 18, sat behind his girlfriend as she told the judge: “I began a romantic relationship while he was a student and I was in a position of authority.”

Meanwhile, Jones is also hoping to cash in by way of a $11 million lawsuit she filed against Couples Therapy star, Nik Richie for defamation, libel, and invasion of privacy after his website Thedirty.com published a post titled, 'The Dirty Bengals Cheerleader.'

After the trial, Nathan Wilburn, Jones' ex-husband and high-school sweetheart, called his former wife "scum" and a "conniving liar." "If I were a teacher and had an affair with a teenage girl I would be looking at prison time," he said. "There is no justice there. It is just wrong."

Cody sees things differently. "Absolutely not," he said when asked if she preyed on him as a 17-year-old student. "She did not use her power of authority over me or manipulate me. I didn't like being called the victim, because I wasn't a victim. I wasn't a victim of anything. She never did anything to me."

"I always looked at her as a very close friend," he continued. "She was my support system. Outside of school, it just started coming along."

Ready to embark on a new life together, he gushed: "I love everything about her. She can break down in front of me, she can be her worst in front me and it makes me love her even more."

Lindsay Lohan Urges Calm As Hurricane “Sally” Approaches

Lindsay Lohan has broken her silence on Hurricane Sandy.

The actress, soon to be seen in Lifetime’s Liz and Dick, asked her 4.5 million Twitter followers: “WHY is everyone in SUCH a panic about hurricane (i’m calling it Sally)..?”

Mayor Michael Bloomberg and tri-state Governors Andrew Cuomo, Chris Christie, and Dan Malloy have all urged varying levels of precaution, up to and including shutting down the subway system in the city. Ms. Lohan has stern words for them. “Stop projecting negativity! Think positive and pray for peace.”

Ms. Lohan has been injecting herself into big news topics via Twitter more and more, recently congratulating both President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney on their performances at the final debate. (She endorsed Mr. Romney while attending a launch party for a ginseng energy drink.)

The actress also retweeted the Daily News‘s report on Hurricane Sandy’s deleterious effect on flight schedules, possibly to document an example of negative thinking.

A source claims the singer also wants to “be paid for the songs which she wrote that are selling on iTunes”.

realitytv_the_x_factor_2010_5

Lucy Spraggan “might quit” The X Factor as she is furious with show bosses for trying to get her to sing cover versions, a source claimed last night.

The insider said the singer also wants to “be paid for the songs which she wrote that are selling on iTunes”.

Lucy, 21, failed to perform on Saturday as she had flu.

Her illness came after partying at the Bond premiere on Tuesday and fellow contestant Rylan Clark’s 24th birthday bash on Wednesday.

She was too ill to rehearse on Thursday and angry viewers hit out when she did not perform, with one tweeting: “If she stopped boozing we might have some sympathy.”

Lucy, from Sheffield, was kicked out of a posh hotel earlier this month for being drunk.

She goes through to the next round automatically but the source said: “Lucy might quit – she’s tired of being told off. She doesn’t want to sing covers. She was loving it but she’s unwell, which is making her negative.”

A show spokeswoman insisted Lucy would be back, explaining: “She is very happy show-wise.”

Meanwhile, Tulisa refused to accept an apology from Gary after he moaned about her “fag-ash breath” when she criticised his act Christopher Maloney.

Gary said sorry on ITV2 spin-off The Xtra Factor, but Tulisa slammed him for “resorting to primary school comments”.

Jade Ellis, 25, was sent home last night after Gary Barlow cast the deciding vote.

New Study Shows Watching a Horror Film Burns Nearly 200 Calories

rexfeatures_1635823a

A new study has revealed that watching scary movies can burn up to 200 calories a sitting.

The adrenaline rushes that viewers experience during a 90-minute horror film are believed to use up the same amount of energy as is contained within a bar of chocolate.

According to The Sunday Telegraph, scientists from the University of Westminster monitored the total energy expenditure of ten different people as they watched a selection of movies.

Participants' heart rates, oxygen intake and carbon dioxide output were measured and the study found that on average, the number of calories used increased by a third during horror film viewing.

The movie that burned the most calories across the board was 1980 psychological thriller The Shining, with the average viewer using up 184 calories - close to the amount burned during a half-hour walk.

Classic shark horror Jaws finished second, with viewers burning on average 161 calories, and The Exorcist came third, with participants using up around 158 calories during each viewing.

The research also confirmed that films featuring shock moments designed to make viewers jump are the best calorie-burners, as they cause a spike in heart rate.

"Each of the ten films tested set pulses racing, sparking an increase in the heart rate of the case studies," explained Dr Richard Mackenzie, senior lecturer and specialist in cell metabolism and physiology at the University of Westminster.

"As the pulse quickens and blood pumps around the body faster, the body experiences a surge in adrenaline.

"It is this release of fast acting adrenaline, produced during short bursts of intense stress (or in this case, brought on by fear), which is known to lower the appetite, increase the Basal Metabolic Rate and ultimately burn a higher level of calories."

Helen Cowley, editor of LOVEFiLM - which commissioned the study - added: "We all know the feeling of wanting to hide behind the sofa or grab a pillow when watching scary or hair raising scenes, but this research suggests that maybe those seeking to burn some calories should keep their eyes on the screen."

The top ten calorie-burning horror films are as follows:

1. The Shining: 184 calories

2. Jaws: 161 calories

3. The Exorcist: 158 calories

4. Alien: 152 calories

5. Saw: 133 calories

6. A Nightmare on Elm Street: 118 calories

7. Paranormal Activity: 111 calories

8. The Blair Witch Project: 107 calories

9. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre: 105 calories

10. [Rec]: 101 calories

Despite being happily married, Robbie Williams has revealed he would love to go on a date with actress Mila Kunis.

The Candy singer, who got hitched to wife Ayda Field in 2010, claims he would treat Kunis - who is currently dating Ashton Kutcher - to an afternoon of passion…at a Travelodge hotel. Williams is quoted by The Sun as saying: "I’m married and I respect and love my wife too much. But, that being said, if Mila could meet me at the nearest hotel, the Travelodge.

"I don’t know if she’s been to Keele Services before, but at Keele Services there is a Travelodge. It’s only £27.99 for the afternoon, Mila, I’ll see you there.”

During an interview with Capital FM yesterday (29th October), the cheeky chappy was also asked whether he still had the hots for pal Gary Barlow's wife, Dawn. The former Take That star stated: "Not again. You know how much trouble I got in last time. He nearly found out, you know. This is embarrassing for both of us, I’m married now.” Robbie, who welcomed his first child with Field last month, recently stated that he avoids cheating on Ayda by having her by his side at all times and staying sober.

Adele is reportedly Christina Aguilera's "weight mentor".

The American singer has suffered a lot of cruel taunts about her figure recently, after seemingly putting on some pounds. Christina is happy with her womanly shape but some industry figures have criticised her and accused her of letting herself go.

British star Adele is famed for her full figure and has reportedly been on hand to support Christina.

"Now Adele has become Christina's secret weight mentor, calling her regularly to dish on dieting horror stories and offer advice on clothes that best flatter the fuller figure," an insider told National Enquirer. "She's really helped Christina improve her self-esteem."

Christina, 31, is believed to be in awe of how 24-year-old Adele handles comments about her figure. Rather than bowing to pressure to diet Adele has embraced her shape and looked stunning in black at the Grammy Awards earlier this year. It was reportedly that appearance which inspired Christina to stay true to herself and ditch the diet.

"Christina is one of Adele's very few Hollywood friends," the insider explained. "They joke all the time about how they're forming a fat girls singing club to support other musicians with weight issues. They're a match made in diva heaven!"
