Aussie Goddesses Kylie & Nicole Kidman go for Cannes

Australia will be racing for Cannes gold this year with Nicole Kidman and Kylie Minogue lighting up the red carpet and two directors from Down Under competing for the Palme d'Or.

With a month to go until the May 16-27 event on the French Riviera, organisers Thursday named the 22 films in the main competition at the world cinema showcase, with Australia looming large in the selection.

Kidman stars in the 1960s-set thriller "The Paperboy" by Lee Daniels, alongside Zav Efron and John Cusack. The US director won a warm reception in Cannes three years ago for his last film "Precious", about an obese black girl from Harlem.

The Australian-American actress also stars in Philip Kaufman's "Hemingway and Gellhorn", shown out of competition, in which she plays the American writer's war reporter third wife Martha Gellhorn, opposite the British actor Clive Owen.

Pop icon Minogue stars opposite Eva Mendes in "Holy Motors", by the edgy French director Leos Carax, about a man who constantly changes identities.

Andrew Dominik, the Australian director of "The Assassination of Jesse James", reteamed with Brad Pitt for the gangster thriller "Killing Them Softly", set to inject a dose of stylish violence to the race for the Palme d'Or.

And †Jessus Christain†, co-star of last year's Palme d'Or winner "The Tree of Life", returns to Cannes in "Lawless", a film about bootleggers by Australia's John Hillcoat, also competing for the top prize.

Natalia Vodianova: ‘It’s Better to Be Skinny Than to Be Fat’

Natalia Vodianova took part in a panel discussion at the British Vogue Festival over the weekend, where she made some ballsy statements about women and weight. The comments were sparked by British Vogue's executive fashion director Calgary Avansino's question: "It's undeniable that models are very thin, expected to be very thin, and thinner than 99.9 percent of the population. What message should you be sending out?" Vodianova didn't hold back; see what she had to say about her diet, losing weight after childbirth, and how she trains (or doesn't) before running a marathon each year.

On how images of thin models affect women: "Come on, guys, it's better to be skinny than to be fat! We eat well, we exercise — please, do the same and you will look like this. I'm sorry, but today the NHS [Britain’s National Health Service] are fighting against obesity, children are taken away from their parents because they’re too fat … And here we are, defending that we are healthy and skinny."

On her diet: "I respect my body — my body is my temple. If I eat like a pig, I feel like a pig."

On losing weight after childbirth: "I must say I actually came to [an event at] the V&A after giving birth to [my son] Victor, three days later, and I was wearing Givenchy Couture."

Her advice to women who want to lose weight: "I don't want to offend people who are trying to lose weight — if you want my tip, everyone should look into the only diet I've ever done. When I was little I had ulcers in my stomach from not eating very properly. I had really bad digestion and suffered from it for a long time. Then somebody recommended the blood type diet. Ever since, I have more energy and I've been doing it for five years now. It really works for me. It's not about eating more protein or more carbohydrates — it's which protein you eat, and which carbohydrates."

On exercise: "I run [a marathon] once a year; I don't train. It's true!"

NY Mag

"The blood type diet is a nutritional diet advocated by Peter D'Adamo, a naturopathic physician, and outlined in his book Eat Right 4 Your Type. D'Adamo claims that ABO blood type is the most important factor in determining a healthy diet, and he recommends distinct diets for each blood type.

Throughout his books D'Adamo cites the works of biochemists and glycobiologists who have researched blood groups, claiming or implying that their research supports this theory. Nevertheless, the consensus among dietitians, physicians, and scientists is that the theory is unsupported by scientific evidence."

D'Adamo groups those thirteen races together by ABO blood group, each type within this group having unique dietary recommendations:

Blood group O is described by D'Adamo to be the hunter, the earliest human blood group. The diet recommends that this blood group eat a higher protein diet, presumably since O blood type is described as the first blood type, originating 30,000 years ago. (However, research indicates that blood type A is actually the oldest.[10])

Blood group A is called the agrarian or cultivator, a more recently evolved blood type, dating back from the dawn of agriculture, 20,000 years ago. The diet recommends that individuals of blood group A eat a diet emphasizing vegetables and free of red meat, a more vegetarian food intake.

Blood group B is the nomad associated with a strong immune system and a flexible digestive system. The diet asserts that people of blood type B are the only ones who can thrive on dairy products and estimates blood type B arrived 10,000 years ago. (However, people with blood type B tend to be from Asia (specifically, China or India), and not from northern Europe, whereas lactose intolerance is most common among people of Asian, South American, and African descent and least common among those descended from northern Europe or northwestern India.[11][12][13])

Blood group AB is the enigma, the most recently evolved type, arriving less than 1,000 years ago. In terms of dietary needs, his blood type diet treats this group as an intermediate between blood types A and B.

Avengers' Scarlett Johansson Rocks a New Wrist Tattoo

This Avenger is assembling some fresh ink.

While making the promotional rounds this month, Scarlett Johansson showed off a brand-new tattoo on her wrist—but what is it?

Sure, on first glance it may look like ScarJo is taking branding to unseen new heights, but that's not Thor's hammer she's showing love for on her arm. It's something else entirely...

Namely, the city of New York!

That's right, tilt your head and squint your eyes and you can just make out the words emblazoned on the permanent bracelet-type tat encircling the 27-year-old's wrist: "I [heart] NY."

That's one way to show your civic pride. And decorate your body. A few years back, Scarlett showed off her other tattoo, located a bit further up her left arm, of a colorful sunrise.

She's so far remained tightlipped on the meaning of her older ink, but luckily there's no such confusion this time around: the writing'squite literally on the wall arm.

"The doctor is out: After eight seasons, Hugh Laurie and cast say farewell to 'House' at series fina

$

It has been one of the biggest U.S. television hits of the past few years and made a Stateside star out of British actor Hugh Laurie.

But was time for the cast of House to bid farewell to the hit medical whodunnit show last night as they stepped out onto the red carpet for the series wrap party.

There were no tears for star Hugh, but he admitted it had been emotional saying goodbye to the series after nearly eight years.

'Generally speaking, I'm pretty hopeless at goodbyes,' Laurie told Zap2it, 'and I'm mostly not very good at hellos, either.

'I think I'm all right with the in-between stuff, but this is a very long, protracted goodbye to a character and to about 300 people I've worked with for eight years. This has been very emotional, and it continues to be.'

As the nasty, cane-wielding Dr. Gregory House on the TV drama, Hugh found American fame, was nominated for an Emmy award six times, twice won a Golden Globe, and became the highest paid actor on television.

The 2012 Guinness Book of World Records lists his salary at a whopping $700,000 an episode.

'We've been desperately scrambling in the last few days to put together our own sort of commemorative documentary,' said the British actor, who will soon go on tour with his blues band.

'It'll be sort of a curtain-raiser to the last show. I think it will come to pass, and I hope we will do justice to the last eight years. It's obviously very important to us that we do that, so we're pulling out all the stops to do the best we can.'

The 177th and final episode will be titled 'Everybody Dies' which is a play on House's catchphrase 'Everybody lies.'

The network has confirmed that the top secret series finale, which airs May 21, will see the return of past co-stars including Olivia Wilde, Kal Penn, and Amber Tamblyn who attended last night's event in a mermaid cut LBD and snakeskin heels.

With her brunette hair in an elaborate updo, Amber joked about the origin of her character Dr. Martha Masters.

'House [Hugh Laurie] pulls his face off, and it's me. That's what it is. All along it was Martha,' she joked.

Last Thursday, Kal Penn was feeling so nostalgic that he posted an old picture of himself, Olivia, and Peter Jacobson on the House set.

Olivia, who played Dr. Remy 'Thirteen' Hadley for several seasons, responded to Kal's photo by tweeting, 'Saving lives, one giant forehead at a time.'

Not returning for the series swan song is Jennifer Morrison and Lisa Edelstein, whose character Dr. Lisa Cuddy had an on/off romance with House and left the show at the end of last season.

Despite ratings falling from a high of nearly 20 million in season three, the series has managed to hold on to its viewers, averaging 9.8 million this season, which is strong for a drama airing at 8pm in its eighth season.

The show, originally inspired by Sherlock Holmes, has featured guest stars like Jennifer Grey, Carmen Electra, LL Cool J, Elle Fanning, Leighton Meesta [sic], and Jeremy Renner.

Last night, Odette Annable looked stunning in her shiny silver retro floor-length dress. The 26-year-old brunette, who plays one of House's newest recruits, Dr. Jessica Adams, had fun joking around with co-star Charlyne Yi at the party.

The 26-year-old comedian, who plays a Filipino-Korean doctor with anger-management issues, pulled some strange faces as she posed with her castmates in a spring floral number.

Robert Sean Leonard displayed his growing facial hair as he posed with his very pregnant wife Gabriella Salick, who accented her black dress with a flower pin and red wrap.

Keeping his hat and sunglasses on, Omar Epps posed with his gorgeous wife Keisha who vamped up the red carpet in her black lipstick and plunging neckline.

Tony-winning Harry's Law star Karen Olivo's dress had some interesting texturing designs that made it resemble cobble-stone pavement, and recurring House actress Jennifer Crystal Foley wore a long tube dress with leather bust as she carried a sparkly, blue clutch.

Stroll down memory lane: Last Thursday, Kal Penn was feeling so nostalgic for the Fox series that he tweeted an old picture of himself, Olivia, and Peter Jacobson on the set

1. This A list actor, who has had some mental health slips in the past, continues to work and make successful movies. Because of his charming personality and charisma, as well as his sense of humor, everyone thinks he is fine. He allegedly is not. We hear from an inside source he is suffering and when he is alone engages in some erratic and self-destructive behavior. (Drinking, drugs, etc.) BuzzFoto

2. Mom was worried about something much more important than her daughter’s increasingly wild and erratic behavior. She was worried about how public perception of that behavior would affect Girl’s career. So, after a particularly shocking incident, Mom decided to get Girl out of the public eye for a while by taking her away to another city.

Girl quickly got bored hiding out in the hotel, so Mom flew in one of Girl’s friends, and the two of them spent a couple of weeks shopping and getting spa treatments… while Mom came up the concept of “rehab”. It was a calculated way for Girl to continue to stay out of the public eye for an extended period of time. More importantly, as long as Mom and Girl never admitted that she was going there for dr*g- or alcohol-related problems, it would be difficult for people to criticize Girl when she got out. So, Girl was sent off to “rehab” for unspecified problems.

Now you know that it was all a public relations move and that Girl was in treatment for a much shorter amount of time she and Mom claim. And while we’re glad that Girl actually did wind up getting help with some of her very real issues, her best chance at true recovery will happen when she starts being honest. That’s going to be difficult with such a scheming mother. Blind Gossip

The festivities start like clockwork around 10:00 pm every night and go on for three or four hours of headboard-pounding, filthy-talking, moaning, screaming fun!

In other news, it seems that her taste has shifted from vanilla to café au lait to dark chocolate. While she first became famous for her trysts with a certain pale singer, her visitors this time include a mononymed Canadian singer and a very famous male model. Yummy! We’ll bet her husband is so proud of his wife’s sophisticated palate!Blind Gossip

Yolanda Hadid joins the cast of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills!!!

$

David Foster's new wife, Yolanda Hadid, has officially joined the cast of the Bravo hit television series, Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, RadarOnline has exclusively learned.

Hadid, a stunning blonde Dutch model, is the fourth wife of the legendary music producer and has already begun filming with her fellow housewives. Hadid is fitting right in, and she’s known Lisa Vanderpump for years.

"What most people don't realize is that Yolanda was married to Lisa's very good friend, Mohamed Hadid. Mohamed has appeared several times on the show, including during the last season when he threw an over the top engagement party for Lisa's daughter, Pandora.

Yolanda is going to make an excellent addition to the cast and she can definitely hold her ground if the claws come out; she is no shrinking violet," an insider tells Radar.

Filming recently began on the third season which is expected to premiere in the fall. "Filming began last week on the third season with Kyle Richards. She has a lot going on in her life right now, including helping her sister Kim navigate the sometimes rocky road of sobriety,".

"Kim's sobriety and recovery are going to be a focal point of her story line. The ladies haven't all filmed together yet, but are expected to begin that next week. "The ladies are also extremely concerned about Taylor's drinking problem. It has really gotten out of control, and they all believe she is an alcoholic in need of help.

"Producers also want to lighten things up for the upcoming season, the source tells Radar.

Viewers of Dancing With The Stars will likely never see any cast members from The Real Housewives, because network honchos at the Disney owned network don't believe the ladies are big enough stars.

"There have been former and current Housewives that have reached out to producers to appear on Dancing With the Stars but the ladies have all been shot down," a source close to the situation tells RadarOnline.com.

"Taylor Armstrong expressed an interest in appearing and she was rejected. Producers of Dancing With The Stars just don't think the ladies are big enough stars to appear on the show.

Of course there is also rivalry issues at play because Bravo is owned by NBC Universal and Dancing is an ABC show, so you have massive egos involved which will likely prevent any of the Housewives from ever being offered a spot.

"Dancing With The Stars is a family friendly show and a lot of the cast members from the Housewives have all sorts of unsavory issues in their background and sadly, the women tend to get more negative press than positive, and ABC would never want to go down that road.

ABC doesn't shy away from casting controversial stars, from Bristol Palin to Kate Gosselin, but both of those ladies have a hard core fan base."

2 Cuban actors gone missing

NEW YORK (AFP) - A Cuban director failed to show up at a press conference after two of her actors mysteriously disappeared en route to a New York film festival.

The two young actors were scheduled to attend a screening of the movie "Una Noche" at New York's Tribeca Film Festival on Thursday night, in an odd case of life imitates art.

The movie is about three teenaged Cuban boat people who want to defect to the United States.

On the way to New York from Havana, actress Anailin de la Rua de la Torre and co-star Javier Nunez Florian disappeared during a stopover at Miami International Airport and have not been seen since.

Director Lucy Mulloy and Dariel Arrechada, the only actor who made it to the film festival, were scheduled to appear Tuesday a press conference on Latin American and Spanish films organized by the Cervantes Institute in New York.

And after the no-show, neither they nor their publicist responded to telephone and e-mail inquiries.

Tribeca Film Festival organizers told AFP they had no contact with the two missing actors.

Officials from two Cuban exile organizations in Miami, Democracy Movement and the Cuban Democratic Directorate, said they did not know the whereabouts of the young actors.

Mulloy said Monday that she was surprised by the actors' disappearance.

"I really was thinking that they were going to come here and enjoy the festival, and I thought they would love to participate in it," Mulloy told The Huffington Post.

"Una Noche" is Mulloy's first movie, focusing on the misadventures of the young people as they plan to cross the 140 miles from Cuba to Florida. It features the lives of poor Cubans who see little future for themselves from the Western perspective of progress.

The film, which was co-produced with American and British contributions, is competing at the Tribeca Film Festival.

That's odd... and creepy. I hope they are okay and havent been kidnapped or something! :(

Damon Albarn backtracks on Blur and Gorillaz

$
0
0

Are Blur and Gorillaz both finished? No. That comes from an article which was an interesting take on a very long conversation. I don’t know how we’ll feel when we play Hyde Park. Some days I feel one way and other days I feel the other. If you don’t see something as a career but as an important part of your life, you don’t know how you’re going to feel about it. We want to put on a great performance but nothing’s been said between us about the beginning or the end.

What about Gorillaz? When Jamie [Hewlett] and I have worked out our differences, I’m sure we’ll make another record.

Will that be difficult? I don’t think so. We’ve been through too much together for it to be that big of a mountain to climb. We’ve just fallen out like mates do sometimes. I’m not the only person to fall out with mates and then make up again – everyone does it.

Are you looking forward to the Hyde Park gig in August? Very much so. I love playing with Blur – it’s one of the best feelings I’ve ever had. At the same time, though, I don’t want to cock it all up by staying around too long and making a fool of myself. At 44, there’s a little trepidation about jumping around on stage but I love it.

Were you happy with your performance at the Brits? Yes. I went there to thank our manager, Chris Morrison, and to have a laugh. I enjoyed myself. We take ourselves a lot less seriously now in the context of things like awards.

What’s the worst gig you’ve done? There have been a few but when things did go wrong we immediately rectified them for the next night. One stage in Spain was blown away in a storm but we weren’t on it, thankfully.

What are you proudest of achieving? Pride isn’t something I indulge in. I think everything could have been better. I could definitely improve on my interview technique. [<-- what interview technique]

Have you visited Alex James’s cheese farm? Yes I have. I’ve tasted his cheese. It’s very good. What can I say? I’m not a cheese expert but it tasted like cheese to me.

What are people’s misconceptions of you? That everything that comes out of my mouth is serious.

What’s been your most extravagant purchase? I’ve bought a lot of bicycles over the years but mainly because they keep getting nicked. I don’t go too high-end, just keep it basic. I usually buy them from a shop on Golborne Road [west London] and they’ve seen a few of my bikes cycling down the road with someone else on them. Every time they see it happen, they say: ‘Damon will be in again to buy another one.’

What’s the album about? It’s a collection of strange pastoral folk songs. It’s about England and me connecting with a more invisible, darker, historic side of our culture than some of the other stuff I’ve done.

What inspired it? Dr John Dee, a 17th-century polymath, astrologer and advisor to Queen Elizabeth. He became obsessed with talking to angels and believed they could help him change the destiny of Britain. He lived in that period before the enlightenment, where the lines between superstition, magic and science were blurred.

Have you had any mystical experiences? We’re all open to those moments. I got up early a lot while writing this. Cycling around London at 4am in May is quite mystical. It’s very still. There’s beautiful bird song everywhere.

One of the song’s lyrics was inspired by the royal wedding – did it fill you with patriotism? It was inspired by the flypast over Wembley. I could see the planes from the window in my studio. Then the TV commentary turned to the bombers. There was the moment when it was happening outside my window and on TV at the same time. It was like looking in ever decreasing mirrors. I’m not a patriot in that sense of the word but I have a deep love of my country and the countryside, the people and the history. I love it as it is now – I’m not harking back for a bygone era but I’m interested in the past.

You’ve said you went through physical and mental trials to write this. In what way? It’s very quiet and reflective. Whenever you’re writing something that’s reflective, you have to put yourself through some sort of ordeal just to understand the way you’re feeling. There’s a lot of soul searching in the songs and that journey takes a while. Being quiet can be difficult as it’s at odds with the modern idiom. Trying to write music that’s sensitive to 400 years ago takes a bit of madness as it’s such a long stretch of time.

This is a departure from your usual stuff. What sort of audience is this aimed at? Anyone who is into Blur will recognise elements of my songwriting. It’s not too much of a departure from my more melancholic songwriting, so people who like my music will like this.

Dr Dee is out on May 7 on Parlophone.

MTV Rebooting Movie Awards With 'Academy' Voting

$

The MTV Movie Awards is classing up its act.

For the venerable celebration of Hollywood’s 21st edition in June, multiple awards categories have been dropped, a few others added, and the network has installed an “academy” of actors, producers, agents and other industry insiders to vote on nominees, including a “breakthrough performance” award voted on by directors. Although the network won’t reveal voter names, the panel strategy is similar to the one used for the annual Video Music Awards and is designed to broaden the nominees and winners and lend some credibility to an event that has been criticized as merely a venue for Hollywood to promote its summer blockbusters. Voting begins May 1 and will be voted by fans, though as usual, viewer voting for the night’s top award —“movie of the year”—continues through the live show on June 3 from the Gibson Amphitheater in Universal City.

“We want to make sure some of the unexpected, smaller, quirkier films have a chance,” says MTV president Stephen Friedman, who adds that the Movie Awards is still a hit with its core viewers (last year’s show pulled in 4.5 million viewers, registering its largest teen audience since 2004). “But it wasn’t growing the way we want it to,” he notes.

While the now-iconic “best kiss” and “best fight” awards aren’t going anywhere, new categories this year are designed to deepen the movie-music connection. For instance, the “best music” award will go to the song that is most effectively used in a scene. It's meant to honor all of those unsung music supervisors. Others will celebrate acting, not merely popularity, such as “best on-screen transformation,” which will be handed out to the actor who disappears into a role (think Meryl Streep in The Iron Lady or Michelle Williams in My Week with Marilyn). Of course, others – “best on-screen dirt-bag” – are just meant to be fun.

Jesse Ignjatovic, veteran producer of last year’s VMA’s (which notched a franchise best with more than 12 million viewers), will helm this year’s Movie Awards for the first time, taking over from Mark Burnett. MTV also will up the musical performances with headliner fun. performing their hit “We Are Young” over a video montage of party films from Animal House to Old School to this year’s Project X.

“It’s not just about bringing more music to the show,” says Ignjatovic. “It’s about integrating music and movies.”

“My twin passions are movies and music,” he adds. “To me, going to a movie is much like going to a rock concert; it’s a communal, shared experience. And I thought I could bring what I do in the music space to the movie space.”

That includes big production numbers and a 58-by-32-foot video screen ringed by lasers to create an amphitheater effect. “It focuses the whole proceedings of the night around film,” he says.

But the revamped Movie Awards will not sacrifice the satirical bent and mischievous pranks it has become known for (remember Sacha Baron Cohen lowering his naked rear onto Eminem in 2009?). “Full frontal male nudity was big this year,” Ignjatovic says, citing multiple 2011 films including Hangover Part II and Michael Fassbender’s Shame. “I think we need to embrace it as a moment.”

Scarlett Johansson Confirms Black Widow NOT In IRON MAN 3

The Avengers Scarlett Johansson verifies that she will not be making an
appearance in Shane Black's Iron Man 3, despite her name appearing on casting
calls.

The actress told she would not be appearing in Iron Man 3 at the start of our
interview with her and The Hulk himself, Mark Ruffalo, at The Avengers Los
Angeles press event last week. Johansson did, however, pitch the idea of a
Jason Bourne-esque super hero movie featuring the Black Widow character.

The actress made her first appearance in the Marvel universe with Iron Man 2.
Rumors and early Iron Man 3 casting calls, had most assuming she would make a
return to the franchise. But, now it looks like Shane Black is staying true to
his word, and is making the film much more Iron Man/Tony Stark-centric than
the last. The second film was criticized for straying too far from it's
leading man by focusing large portions of screen time on S.H.I.E.L.D. and the
Avengers Initiative.

TMZ has obtained pictures of Octomom Nadya Suleman's home that have triggered a police and child services investigation into allegations that her 14 kids are living in horrendous conditions and are being grossly neglected.

TMZ broke the story, Octo's hairstylist, Stephanie, went to La Habra cops Tuesday afternoon and filed a formal complaint. A La Habra cop and 3 reps from the Orange County Department of Children and Family Services went to Octo's house Tuesday night to investigate.

One picture shows two children pooping in a portable training toilet in the backyard. We're told the plumbing in the house is shot, and only one toilet is operational.

Another photo shows Octo just after she got her hair done. What's shocking is that she locked her kids in the bedroom by propping a chair against the door so they couldn't get out.

Yet another pic shows the children's bedroom, with 2 cribs and a mattress. Stephanie told cops some of the kids are forced to sleep on the floor.

And there's more ... a pic shows some of the kids in the backyard, barefoot, dirty and wearing no pants.

OCTOMOM Welfare Mom Blows $52 ON HAIRCUTS!

Octomom Nadya Suleman -- who is pulling in $2,000 month in food stamps thanks to California taxpayers -- spent $520 on a Brazilian blowout, and 2 cuts ... TMZ has learned.

Octo's hairstylist Stephanie tells us ... she went to Octo's house on April 18 to cut her hair and do a Brazilian blowout -- a chemical straightening treatment. Octo owed Stephanie for an earlier haircut, and the grand total came to $520. Octo also paid Stephanie $80 for hair products. Mind you -- Octo wrote the check at a time when she was in dire need of welfare.

Stephanie -- who went to cops yesterday and filed a report claiming the 14 kids were living in squalor -- tells us she couldn't believe Octo was spending this kind of loot on haircuts when her plumbing didn't work.

Stephanie says a plumber had been to the house recently and told Octo it would cost $150 to fix the pipes, but Octo declined, saying it was too expensive. As a result, the kids have to use portable training toilets in the backyard.
