"Penny Dreadful" Veteran To Direct Sophie Turner In "Mary Shelley’s Monster"

0
0

Hollywood’s having a bit of a Mary Shelley moment, which is good news because we’re having a Mary Shelley lifetime. Not only are we getting a Frankenstein M.D. web series and a female-directed Mary Shelley biopic starring Elle Fanning, Deadline reports that Game of ThronesSophie Turner is now set to star in Mary Shelley’s Monster, a film that follows the author as she “writes her seminal novel and is drawn into a Faustian bargain with her own “monster” of an alter ego.” Deep breath.

As if Sansa Stark as Mary Shelley wasn’t sufficiently tantalizing, the project also has a perfectly Gothic director: Coky Giedroyc, known for her work on American Horror Story, The Killing, and most promisingly, Penny Dreadful. Deadline quotes Monster Producer Rose Ganguzza saying the project will be

"…the story of the most extraordinary 19th century teenage heroine told in a visceral, sexy, contemporary way [...] Our film is not a period drama. It is a story of youth that transcends time, a gothic romance, a love triangle that involves a dark passenger and we are tremendously excited to have such an exciting cast onboard this wonderful project."

Turner will star alongside American Horror Story‘s Taissa Farmiga and Jeremy Irvine (Stonewall). Judging from the film’s exciting creative team and Ganguzza’s tantalizingly vague description, it sounds like Mary Shelley’s Monster will be a dark and symbolic addition to the welcome new crop of Mary Shelley projects–excitingly, both Monster and the upcoming Fanning movie A Storm in the Stars seem to focus on the author’s work instead of her legendary personal life. There’s so much more to Mary than her famous male companions, and if there’s any actress I’d trust to represent that, it’s Turner.

Michael Fassbender on Magneto's future in "X-Men"

Michael Fassbender has ideas for how he'd like to explore Magneto and has discussed them with Simon Kinberg, who is currently writing X-Men: Apocalypse with Bryan Singer. Talking to IGN while promoting his new movie Frank, where he wears a giant fake head and starts and art band, Fassbender had this to say about Magneto's future:

"Yeah, I mean, I haven't got a script or anything yet, but I'm always excited to see where Simon Kinberg's going to go with the next X-Men. X-Men's been great to me and allowed me to do so much, including films like Frank. I've had a lot of fun with the cast and with the character, Magneto. So I had a good chat with Simon [Kinberg] when we were on our way to Moscow, and we tossed around some ideas on the plane over there. So I'm pretty excited to see how it all comes together. [...] I've had these conversations with Simon and there's a certain strand of his story that I think is pretty interesting and would like to explore, if we could."

Two Writers Hired To Write Separate Scripts For Aquaman Movie, Part Of New Hollywood Trend

0
0

Will Beall and Kurt Johnstad are sleeping with the fishes. The scribes are writing — separately — scripts for Aquaman, one of the installments in Warner Bros.’ multimovie scheme to create a cinematic universe based on the DC Entertainment characters. Aquaman is being developed on dual tracks, where studios and producers hire two separate writers to work on the same project in the hopes of getting the best version. The practice allows for release dates to be set while a project is still in development while giving it a muscular push.

Warners needs just that as last week it dated nine untitled DC movies between 2016 and 2020. Warners is not revealing which one of those will be Aquaman, but the first untitled DC movie is due for release on Aug. 5, 2016, with two more due in 2017, on June 23 and Nov. 17, respectively. Jason Momoa is widely acknowledged as having secured the role of Aquaman in Warners’ DC cinematic universe, although Warners had not yet officially confirmed the casting.

Aquaman is one of comicdom’s classic characters, having been created in 1941 by Paul Norris and Mort Weisinger. The character has been with the Justice League since the team's inception in 1960 and got a major boost in pop culture recognition with the 1970s cartoon series Super Friends. The show, however, also made him the butt of jokes about him being too hackneyed and simple; the perception was that all he could do was talk to marine animals.

(The jokes continue to this day. An Aquaman movie was at the center of a major storyline on HBO's Entourage and just last week Zack Snyder, who is directing Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice as well as the Justice League movie, surprised a Detroit radio talk show, whose DJs were disparaging the hero, by calling in and defending him.)

Are two heads truly better than one? Warner Bros. hired writers Adam Cozad and Craig Brewer to each pen separate scripts for Tarzan, now in preproduction with Alexander Skarsgard and Margot Robbie starring. The studio preferred Cozad's action and structure elements and Brewer's characterization, so it fused both drafts.(Cozad now is working with director David Yates to finalize the film.)

And Tarzan isn't alone. Universal's The Mummy reboot also had two scribes, Jon Spaihts and Billy Ray, working concurrently before the studio focused on Spaihts' draft. Warners simultaneously is developing a live-action Scooby-Doo reboot, with a script by Randall Green, and an animated theatrical feature. Executives and agents say double hirings are on the rise partly because of the demands of the tentpole era. Dates for movies often are set while projects still are in development, creating urgency to move fast. And with reboots and reimaginings, studios sometimes ask for multiple takes before jigsawing the scripts together.

"It's not an epidemic, but it's definitely a newer phenomenon," says one studio-based exec. And it's not going away anytime soon. Insiders say that Warners also is using the method for its supersecret DC Comics projects.
New Regency is taking the process to the next level on an untitled relationship comedy that would pair Brad Pitt and Sandra Bullock in what is said to be a War of the Roses-like story. Sources say that Regency is on the hunt for one writer to capture the male character's voice and another for the female voice. But in this case, rather than have the writers work competitively, the company is hoping the two will collaborate -- at first, at least.

So, are two heads better than one or do too many cooks spoil the broth?

Please Like Me is the hilariously awkward coming-of-age TV show you didn’t know you needed

0
0

As a soon-to-be 21 year-old Josh (Josh Thomas) sits across from his girlfriend droning on about his melancohlic outlook and body dysmorphia, a waitress brings the couple an overpriced sundae. "Why can't I ever just let myself properly enjoy things?" Josh asks. "All I can think about is my rubbish face."

His girlfriend, Claire (Caitlyn Stasey), quietly listens to her boyfriend's soliloquy, finally interrupting him. She thinks it's best if she and Josh break up because they've drifted apart. "Also you're gay," she adds. Josh, taken back, assures her she's wrong. "Josh," she says, "you're probably gay."

That was the hilarious cold open of Please Like Me, a half-hour Australian sitcom created by and starring 25 year-old comedian Josh Thomas. Thomas's career in comedy is impressive, especially given his young age. At 17, he was the youngest comedian ever to win Melbourne International Comedy Festival's RAW Comedy Award. Two years later, the Festival gave him its Best Newcomer Award for his stand-up routine titled "Please Like Me."

The comedy of this routine later became the basis for the Australian series of the same name, whose second series premieres tonight at 10:30 p.m. Eastern on Pivot — a new television network billing itself as the one millennials should watch if they want to "make a meaningful difference in the world." (Hold for explanation as to how precisely that works.)

The premise of PLM has its fair share of tropes. At the encouragement of his father (David Roberts) — who, by the way, dates a much younger woman from Thailand — Josh moves in with his middle-aged bipolar mother (Debra Lawrence), essentially to babysit her after a botched suicide attempt. His giraffe-loving best friend, Tom (Thomas Ward), is likeable and nerdy and ends up in falling for Josh's ex. And Josh's religious Great Aunty Peg (Judi Farr) comes around almost daily to take care of his mother, lecture him about church attendance, and inquire about the size of his testicles.

While some of the plot devices and character choices can be predictable, the overall feel of the show is anything but. Please Like Me might play with stock television conventions, but you're probably not going to turn the channel out of boredom. The series manages to ably balance predictability with out-of-leftfield punchlines in a way that leaves you both laughing out loud and looking around the room to make sure no one sees you laughing out loud. The comedy is smart, and it's also really, really inappropriate. But it isn't cringe-worthy — the characters are too cuddly for that.

Lifetime To Air 'The Brittany Murphy Story' TV-Biopic This September!!!!

A two-hour television movie, The Brittany Murphy Story, will premiere Saturday, Sept. 6, on Lifetime, the network announced Tuesday. It is the first long-form scripted project about the actress, who died nearly five years ago at 32.

Amanda Fuller will portray Brittany Murphy, with Sherilyn Fenn set to play her mother, Sharon Murphy.

The movie will recount the story of Brittany Murphy's younger years, including her mother's efforts to turn her talented daughter into a star in the 1980s and '90s, and then leads up to her death. It will also touch on the aftermath, when her mother dealt with claims that her daughter's death was not accidental.

While Lifetime has not revealed the source of the script material, a spokesperson for Sharon Murphy has said she was not consulted for the movie and has not cooperated with the production in any way.

Brittany Murphy began in television before going on to star in films, which included Clueless, Girl Interrupted and 8 Mile. She died Dec. 20, 2009, and her husband, Simon Monjack, died five months later. The coroner ruled that both had died from pneumonia and other causes.

Is Tom Hiddleston gonna be the next Ben Hur?

tumblr_mh3wnsY9801reuxzho1_500

Tom Hiddleston as Ben-Hur? MGM and Paramount are hoping to make that happen.
With a release date of February 26, 2016 already set for the studios' forthcoming adaptation of the 1880 Lew Wallace novel, the "Avengers" star is being eyed to take on the title role in the film for director Timur Bekmambetov ("The Darkest Hour"), according to Deadline. If Hiddleston were to take on the part, he would be the fifth actor to play the iconic character after Herman Rottger (1907), Ramon Novarro (1925), Charlton Heston (1959) and Joseph Morgan (2010).

Set in Jerusalem at the beginning of the 1st century, "Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ" tells the story of Jewish prince Judah Ben-Hur and his rivalry with childhood friend Messala, a Roman commanding officer who has him falsely convicted for an alleged assassination attempt on the Roman governor. After being condemned to the Roman galleys, Judah later returns to Jerusalem to seek revenge on Messala - a scenario that culminates in the climactic chariot race made famous by William Wyler's Oscar-winning 1959 version of the story. Unlike that film, the new adaptation will give more weight to the parallel story of Jesus Christ that unfolds in the original novel.

The latest version of "Ben-Hur" was penned by Oscar-winning "12 Years a Slave" screenwriter John Ridley from a previous draft by Keith Clarke ("The Way Back"); Mark Burnett and Roma Downey ("The Bible") are serving as producers.

IDK whether to be excited about Tom getting roles, cynical about Hollywood's need to remake all the things, or annoyed about another white person being up for a role about Middle-Eastern people. Either way, nothing's set in stone.

Top 5 Guardians Who Should Join the Team in "GotG 2"

0
0
Two weeks ago, The Guardians of the Galaxy were pretty much the most obscure superhero group this side of The Green Team. One hit movie later, the team of misfits -- Star-Lord/Peter Quill, Gamora, Drax, Rocket Raccoon and, of course, Groot -- are already household names.

With director James Gunn on board for the sequel, scheduled for 2017, and The Powers That Be promising new recruits from Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning's critically acclaimed 2008 reboot of the comic title on which the movieverse cast is based, we journalists at this professional news site decided to make our own wishlist of the characters we'd most like to see. You betta read on!

5. MAJOR VICTORY (Vance Astro)

major

Major Victory has a very confusing backstory. He's a time-traveler from an alternate past who got slingshotted to the year 3000, back again, went on a quest for Captain America's legendary shield, got stuck in suspended animation, and then ended up in OUR universe with the Guardians of the Galaxy, basically. Whatever, no one bothers to learn all that crap about him. Major Victory has a funny name, a noble bearing, a cool containment bodysuit, and gives everyone an opportunity to see Cap's shield flung at evildoers in space. What more do you need to know?

4. MOONDRAGON

moony

Despite her depressing tendencies to swoon, die, and be drawn in bathing suits with thigh-high boots, skilled telepath Moondragon (aka Heather Douglas) is an important Guardian and far more interesting than her father (???!), Drax. The movies would probably sever that connection, and nothing of value would be lost tbh. She also rocks the bald, is a canon bisexual, and OTP with Phyla-Vell (see below). Plus one time she turned into a FUCKING ACTUAL DRAGON, FUCK YEA!

3. QUASAR/MARTYR/PHYLA-VELL

phyla

Known by many names, Phyla-Vell, daughter of Mar-Vell (aka the first, bepenis'd Captain Marvel) is one of the founding members of the GotG and a true superhero, with energy blasts and magic swords and everything. She's also known to be kind of a flop at all the new identities she tries out, which is actually endearing. Besides being in a f/f relationship with Moondragon that's the torrentially melodramatic quintessence of comics, she has a great character design and an idealistic, if sometimes impulsive, hero's personality. Gunn can change the Mar-Vell connection if it's too complicated rights-wise. Basically, if Phyla isn't in the Guardians of the Galaxy sequel, something is fucking rotten in the state of Marvel.

2. MANTIS

mantis

YAAAAS MANTIS. She's another one with a complicated backstory rooted in the 70's where it should stay, forever forgotten. Basically, Mantis is a telepath (the GotG have a lot) who has premonitions, mind-blasts, ace martial arts skills, and a stylin' grass skirt. She's one of the most compellingly and entertainingly written characters in the Abnett and Lanning series, and her working relationship with Star-Lord is subtle, sweet, and genuine. Oh, and she was an Avenger once! They can paint her a different color if the green interferes. Mantis better be in the sequel goddamn it, I love her

1. COSMO

cosmo!!

If you've seen "Guardians of the Galaxy,"you've already seen Cosmo. He's the qt dog in the spacesuit who cameos a few times in the Collector's/Benicio del Toro's place, notably at the end with Howard the Duck. The reason Cosmo has shown up already is because he is UNIVERSALLY FUCKING BELOVED by readers and the best character in the GotG comics. He's a Russian space dog who got mutated by cosmic rays, became a powerful telepath and telekinetic (yes I know, shh), and fell through a wormhole or something to end up the chief of security of Knowhere, the Guardians' home base. He communicates telepathically with an adorable Russian accent and loves everyone because he's a dog. But he also takes no guff when it comes to troublemakers!

Cosmo has been a Guardian of the Galaxy with the best of them, and, when brought to the big screen as a proper team member, will probably become a bigger fan fave than Rocket. Than GROOT, even. You heard me right. It's time to unleash (hehe) Cosmo on the world.

‘Chasing Life': Midseason Finale Ends With ‘Life Or Death’ Cliffhanger

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

April Carver enters chemo treatment on the August 12 episode of Chasing Life, and her hospital stay puts her into a different mindset than we’ve ever seen before.

“She thinks she is ready and she is not,” Italia Ricci tells HollywoodLife.com EXCLUSIVELY. “She emotionally, physically, psychologically she starts to lose it. How strong she’s been throughout the season, it all comes crashing down. The whole episode feels like she is trying so hard to get to the surface for a breath of air and things keep happening to her that keep preventing her from doing that and she can’t catch a break.”

Luckily, April has plenty loved ones to support her during her treatment — her sister, mother, grandmother, friends and a certain someone that might surprise you: Dominic. Her ex-boyfriend — or is he? — comes back  to surprise her, but their reunion isn’t all rainbows and butterflies.

If you’ve been watching the season, you could probably guess what might pull them apart — Leo. So will he come in between her and Dominic once and for all?

Tina Belcher from Bob's Burgers is fan-voted as the Best Character on Television

0
0

One week, zillions of tweets, and nearly 75,000 votes later, our readers have spoken—and here’s who you have named the Best Character on TV Right Now. The winner? Well…

… it’s awkward, deadpan teenager Tina Belcher of Bob’s Burgers.

That’s right: One of the most animated entries on EW‘s list of TV’s Best Characters blew away 24 other worthy competitors—including Arya Stark, Alison Hendrix of Orphan Black, and even Benedict Cumberbatch Sherlock Holmes himself—to emerge victorious in our poll. (Scores of you also voiced support for characters who didn’t make it onto EW’s initial list, including Hannibal‘s central duo of Will Graham and Hannibal Lecter, Raymond “Red” Reddington of The Blacklist, Daryl Dixon of The Walking Dead, Vanessa Ives of Penny Dreadful, and Sheldon Cooper of The Big Bang Theory.)

Why does Tina deserve the honor? Well, in the words of EW‘s Kyle Anderson, “All the good laugh lines [on Burgers] go to Gene the hedonist and Louise the Machiavellian manipulator, but eldest Belcher kid Tina (Dan Mintz) is still the butt-obsessed heart of the show. And she doesn’t even need dialogue to do it: Somehow Mintz has spun Tina’s signature awkward-teen moan into a reliable catchphrase.”

The poll’s outcome was a close one, with everyone in the ultimate top three leading at one point or another—but in the end, Tina reigned supreme. Probably because she’s a smart, strong, sensual woman.

(Full Results in the Source)
And well deserved in my opinion. Any favorite Tina moments?

November court date set for Hope Solo

0
0

The trial of Olympic gold medalist and Seattle Reign FC goalkeeper Hope Solo was set for Nov. 4 after a short hearing Monday morning in Kirkland Municipal Court.

Her attorney, Todd Maybrown, said he aims to have the case dismissed and have evidence suppressed.

“As expected, and as is normal in misdemeanor cases, today’s hearing was about setting a trial date. We’re pleased that both sides, and the judge, agreed to a November date and we look forward to the opportunity for the truth about this incident to be disclosed, which will clear Hope’s name,” Maybrown said in an email.

Solo has pleaded not guilty to gross-misdemeanor charges for allegedly striking her sister and her nephew at a Kirkland home in late June. If convicted, she could face up to six months in jail.

At the hearing, Solo was accompanied by her husband, former Seahawks tight end Jerramy Stevens.

Robin Williams to be Memorialized in WoW

A petition on Change.org has succeeded in getting the late Robin Williams memorialized in the popular MMORPG World of Warcraft.

According to the petition, Robin Williams was an avid fan of WoW and "took his World of Warcraft characters very serious [sic]."

"He often joked about his WoW addiction but also about the reactions he'd get from other gamers when he admits he plays the game," the post continues. "Because of his presence within our community, we the players of World of Warcraft are asking Blizzard to kindly create an NPC within the game that memorializes the actor/comedian."

The petition asks for the Williams NPC to perform some of the actor's best jokes, "so that he may continue making us smile long after his passing."

Petitioners got their wish late last night, when, in response to a tweet asking him if he'd seen the petition, Technical Game Designer, Chadd Nervigg responded"Yes. We're taking care of it." Robin Williams will appear as an NPC of some kind in the game.

Adam Senn thinks his bisexual pro basketballer character is 'a bit of a sociopath'

0

Captureghj

VH1's pro basketball drama Hit the Floor had its second season finale on Monday (11 August) and there may be hope yet for true romance between star player Zero and his agent Jude.

The pair, who began an affair a few episodes back, have a heart-to-heart in the locker room with Jude (Brent Antonello) saying he wants a real relationship, not just a sexual one.

In the final moments, Zero (Adam Senn) drops his guard a bit and the season ends with the possibility that the two may make a go of it.

'Zero is a bit of a sociopath,' Senn tells The Backlot. 'He’s unsure where he stands. But maybe it isn’t just about sex. It’s definitely about the camaraderie of having a friend, the one and only person that Zero felt like he could trust.'

'But there’s definitely a dynamic and that’s the beauty of those characters is playing with that dynamic and not making it just about being gay or being bi or anything. It’s a relationship and I think we’re just going to discover more as time goes on.'

While the Jude character has come to terms with the fact that he is in fact gay, Zero appears to be a bisexual who has so far only been willing to have relationships, publicly at least, with women.

Senn believes he has 'sociopathic tendencies' because he's always thinking about  how to get from point A to point B instead of thinking about people.

'I think Jude’s got him figured out,' he said. 'Jude is at peace with himself and who he is, which is awesome, and Brent does such a good job of playing the groundedness of where Jude stands.

Hopefully Zero can get to that point sometime next season, find himself and be confident with who he is instead of always trying to play it up for someone else.'

As far as having his character, who had previously been involved with a team cheerleader, becoming involved with a man, Senn had this to say: 'In general, I’ve always been very open in my life. My cousin was gay and I love him to this day so that stuff doesn’t bother me and I don’t mind pushing people’s buttons.'

Hit the Floor has been renewed for a third season.

Ciara Calls Off Engagement to Future After He Cheated; Pair Welcomed Baby 3 Months Ago

She's out! Ciara has called off her engagement to Future, multiple sources reveal in the new issue of Us Weekly. The "I'm Out" singer, 28, has called it quits with the rapper, 30, just three months after welcoming their son Future Zahir Wilburn.

"He cheated on her. Game over," an insider tells Us of the "Turn On the Lights" rapper. Another source adds: "She's devastated. Ciara's focus now is the baby."

Together for more than a year, the duo got engaged on Ciara's birthday in October 2013. They were celebrating in New York City when Future surprised her with a stunning 15-carat diamond ring. She gave birth to their son seven months later, on May 19.

"Our label put us together," Ciara dished to Brides magazine back in July about meeting her now ex. "I went into the studio strictly to work, but he was very calm and sweet, a gentleman… I knew right away that he was different. Now he's my best friend in the world, my partner."
