The Tattooist of Auschwitz

In April 1942, Lale Sokolov, a Slovakian Jew, is forcibly transported to the concentration camps at Auschwitz-Birkenau. When his captors discover that he speaks several languages, he is put to work as a Tätowierer (the German word for tattooist), tasked with permanently marking his fellow prisoners.

Imprisoned for over two and a half years, Lale witnesses horrific atrocities and barbarism—but also incredible acts of bravery and compassion. Risking his own life, he uses his privileged position to exchange jewels and money from murdered Jews for food to keep his fellow prisoners alive.

One day in July 1942, Lale, prisoner 32407, comforts a trembling young woman waiting in line to have the number 34902 tattooed onto her arm. Her name is Gita, and in that first encounter, Lale vows to somehow survive the camp and marry her.

Josh and Hazel's Guide to Not Dating

Hazel Camille Bradford knows she’s a lot to take—and frankly, most men aren’t up to the challenge. If her army of pets and thrill for the absurd don’t send them running, her lack of filter means she’ll say exactly the wrong thing in a delicate moment. Their loss. She’s a good soul in search of honest fun.

Josh Im has known Hazel since college, where her zany playfulness proved completely incompatible with his mellow restraint. From the first night they met—when she gracelessly threw up on his shoes—to when she sent him an unintelligible email while in a post-surgical haze, Josh has always thought of Hazel more as a spectacle than a peer. But now, ten years later, after a cheating girlfriend has turned his life upside down, going out with Hazel is a breath of fresh air.

Not that Josh and Hazel date. At least, not each other. Because setting each other up on progressively terrible double blind dates means there’s nothing between them...right?

The Silence of the Girls

The ancient city of Troy has withstood a decade under siege of the powerful Greek army, who continue to wage bloody war over a stolen woman--Helen. In the Greek camp, another woman watches and waits for the war's outcome: Briseis. She was queen of one of Troy's neighboring kingdoms, until Achilles, Greece's greatest warrior, sacked her city and murdered her husband and brothers. Briseis becomes Achilles's concubine, a prize of battle, and must adjust quickly in order to survive a radically different life, as one of the many conquered women who serve the Greek army.

When Agamemnon, the brutal political leader of the Greek forces, demands Briseis for himself, she finds herself caught between the two most powerful of the Greeks. Achilles refuses to fight in protest, and the Greeks begin to lose ground to their Trojan opponents. Keenly observant and cooly unflinching about the daily horrors of war, Briseis finds herself in an unprecedented position to observe the two men driving the Greek forces in what will become their final confrontation, deciding the fate, not only of Briseis's people, but also of the ancient world at large.

The minds behind Hot Wheels, Monster High, American Girl, Barbie, Ever After High, Fischer-Price, and Masters of the Universe has gotten into the film business.

Brenner has produced iconic classics such as Mirror Mirror, and non-iconic ones such as Immortals. She is a member of the executive branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

The company already has several movies in development under other studios; Barbie is supposed to be released by Sony in 2020. Wikipedia still lists a Monster High movie as coming out next month, but let's be real, that's not happening.

Dawn Wells played wholesome country girl Mary Ann on Gilligan's Island from 1964 to 1967. Unfortunately, Wells lost her life savings in the 2008 banking crash and has since been beset by health problems and numerous surgeries that have left her $194,000 in debt to hospitals and the IRS.

Now 79, Wells recently broke her knee and needs to be moved from the assisted living facility where she currently lives to one that better suits her needs, but they won't take her because of her debt. Her longtime friend, Dugg Kirkpatrick, started a 'Help Dawn Wells' GoFundMe page to raise the money to get her out of debt, apparently without her knowledge. It has already raised $66,000 of the goal.

Wells' rep said "She was caught completely unaware of her well-intended friend's creation of a GoFundMe page...this experience has been both embarrassing and humbling for Dawn." Wells herself has now posted a response on Facebook:

Wells and Tina Louise (Ginger) are the last two surviving cast members of Gilligan's Island.

Anna Kendrick purposefully lied to her friends so she could spend her birthday alone,"You know who's always really great about birthdays is the girls from Pitch Perfect and they always try to get me to do something with them, and I actually told them, I was like, 'I'm in Vancouver visiting a friend!' ... Well, now they know that I wasn't."
"I didn't do anything. I specifically did nothing," Kendrick said. "I'm one of those people who hates — not birthdays, I'll go to your birthday — but I hate my birthday, because I hate the attention." What did Kendrick do on her birthday, "I sat at home and organized my sock drawer. I didn't do anything and it was amazing."

ONTD Original: Happy birthday Freddie! Top 5 Freddie Mercury Solo Songs

$
0
0

Today Yesterday, Freddie Mercury would've turned 72. Born Farrokh Bulsara, Freddie is globally known for being the frontman of the legendary band Queen. But despite the fame of his various hits, such as Bohemian Rhapsody, We Are the Champions or Killer Queen, not many people bring up his solo ventures; understandably so, as Mercury’s solo career had very little in common to do with Queen’s and was primarily based on dance, disco and pop music, with a dash of opera.

In honor of Freddie (and because OP already did a Top 10 songs by Freddie Mercury), I chose some highlights of his solo career, which spans two albums and other singles.

Remember that this is a subjective list and that I had to narrow it down from many songs that I genuinely enjoy.

5. Love Kills

Written by: Freddie Mercury

Originally, this song was supposed to be a Queen project, which you can tell by the fact that Brian May and Roger Taylor released a ballad version of Love Kills that they had been keeping in the vaults. However, before Queen’s vision took shape, iconic producer Giorgio Moroder, who at the time was making a new pop soundtrack for a new release of the German expressionist classic “Metropolis” somehow got in contact with Freddie’s team and managed to include Love Kills in the soundtrack. The song became a modest hit and has charted in different countries between 1984 and 2006. This song is a fun, electropop piece that may not appeal to everyone’s taste.

Fun fact: The song was nominated for a Razzie for Worst Original Song, and it was Freddie Mercury’s first solo effort under his own name. Also, because of Freddie’s collaboration with this project, he got the rights to use Metropolis footage for Queen’s Radio Ga Ga video.

4. Mr. Bad Guy

Written by: Freddie Mercury

The title track of Freddie’s just barely successful first solo album, Mr. Bad Guy’s tongue-in-cheek lyrics, referencing himself and probably some Queen lyrics, and its rich instrumentation make for one of the best tracks of the album. The album might not be Queen II or Sheer Heart Attack (and its production leaves a lot to be desired, since many songs sound like demos), but it is a very fun album with many “bops,” and it contains, ironically, the most personal and self-reflective songwriting done by Freddie throughout his career.

Fun fact: This was the first time Freddie recorded a song with a full orchestra providing the instrumentation.

3. In My Defence

Written by: Dave Clark, David Soames and Jeff Daniels

In My Defence was written for the stage musical Time, and Freddie recorded it a few months after the release of Mr. Bad Guy. It’s a wonderful rock-inspired power ballad where Freddie shows his incredible vocals and capacity to emote—and all you hear was his first take! Dave Clark, the creator of the musical, was so happy with Freddie’s In My Defence that he asked him to also sing the title song “Time,” which is another great solo song that didn’t make it to this list.

Fun fact: On April 1988, Freddie attended a charity-gala performance of the musical, where he performed four songs: “Born to Rock'n'Roll”, “In My Defence”, “Time” and “It's In Everyone of Us.” It is his first and only solo (live) performance ever.

2. I Was Born to Love You (1995 version)

Written by: Freddie Mercury

Another song from Mr. Bad Guy, and despite its straightforward and kind of cheesy love lyrics, it gets its spot on the list because it is just so infectious and happy. This particular version was re-worked by Queen and included in the posthumous album “Made in Heaven” and it is markedly different from the “Mr. Bad Guy” version: the original song had a very prevalent synthesizer sound and was more dance/pop (since that was the genre of the record); while the Queen version is a bit longer, favors rock instrumentation, including a patented Brian May guitar solo, changes the tempo of some phrases and uses short sample vocals from A Kind of Magic and Freddie’s posthumous solo hit Living On My Own.

Fun fact: Upon its original 1985 release, the song found modest success and charted at 11 in the UK, and also charted in Germany, Japan, Ireland, South Africa, Switzerland and the US. However, it seems to be quite popular in Japan, since it appeared twice more in the Japanese Oricon Chart: in 1996 at #45 and in 2004 at #1.

1. The Golden Boy

Written by: Freddie Mercury, Mike Moran, Tim Rice

In 1988, Freddie joined forces with renowned Spanish soprano Monserrat Caballé to record the album “Barcelona,” an opera-inspired, classical crossover album (before the genre became popular in the 90s) where Freddie demonstrated his extraordinary vocals chops and ability to adapt to different genres. Honestly, if it were up to me, the entire Barcelona album would be here, but as that wouldn’t make for a short list, I picked The Golden Boy. In true Freddie fashion, it’s a four-part song that mixes ominous instrumentals and a gospel choir, and narrates the story of two lovers and their eventual fallout.

Fun fact: The song was performed (but mimed instead of being sung live) at the La Nit festival in Barcelona. Watch the video for both the amazing song and the incredible performance energy shown by Freddie and Montserrat.

And that is the end of this list! Sadly, Mr. Bad Guy isn't easily available, so we can only hope it gets re-released one day. However, if you're interested in Freddie's solo output, there are vast collections of rare vocals demos and unfinished songs; and a special edition of "Barcelona" was released in 2011, including brand new orchestrations.

Thanks for reading!
