#DrKen stands up to cancer

0
0
Dr. Ken is a show based on Ken Jeong's life. Last night the show dealt with Ken's wife Allison who discovers a lump in her breast. She is fine and they will continue to reference it in later eps.

Q: Why is it important to you to focus on breast cancer detection in an episode of your show?
This is an intensely personal story about my wife’s fight against breast cancer that also intertwines with a show that’s based on my life and my own personal story. [...]We tried to balance combining fact with fiction, while keeping it all realistic, and also medically as accurate as possible.

Q: What message are you hoping to send with this episode of Dr. Ken?
A: To get screened for cancer. Early detection is important. In this episode of Dr. Ken, Allison finds a lump through a self-exam. To me, mammograms, talking to your doctor about your risk level, about your family history of breast cancer, about the environmental risks of breast cancer, all these things are important. Ask your doctor and get screened. I believe personally and professionally as a former physician in the importance of breast cancer screening.

- The interview goes on about Tran dealing with the cancer and their relationship afterwards.

Suzy Nakamura who plays Ken's wife also has a personal experience dealing with breast cancer.
"I told him that I had my own cancer scare and it would be a good jumping-off point. I had a lump in my breast that was so big you could feel it with your fingers."
*She had multiple surgeries to remove the benign lump.

Q:Do you have a family history of breast cancer?
A: Yes. My mother died of breast cancer at 65, so I think the doctors were being extra cautious. I was 42 when I had my lumpectomy. Thank goodness, everything now is fine, but they do consider me higher risk because of my family history and my lump. I did radiation after the surgeries, and I’ve been on Tamoxifen, which is supposed to reduce my chances of getting it again by 50 percent. It’s just a pill that you take every day for five years.

Q:I also liked that this episode wasn’t just “Allison finds a lump, goes to the doctor, and everything is OK.” It’s much more involved than that. The episode really shows the uncertainties and the anxiety that comes with having to go through this.
A: Yes. The reality is I had to wait a week [to get results]. Because the margins weren’t clear, my post-op meeting with my surgeon ended up being my pre-op for an additional surgery. It’s hard to do that in a 22-minute episode, but I think we captured [the essence] of what it’s like to wait and have that uncertainty. And also what it’s like when you have a family. Of course Allison is going to think about her kids, and there is a reality to considering the consequences, and the spiraling that can happen when you’re left alone with the potential of an illness or a medical situation. I don’t think we should shy away from that stuff, because it’s very real. I think there’s a comedic opportunity as well. If it’s something you are comfortable with, you should joke about it. My mother, who had breast cancer twice, would joke that “the great thing about breast cancer is that you can only get it twice!” [Laughs.] I grew up being comfortable enough to talk about the everyday things that she went through.

Q: What do you hope viewers take away from this episode?
A: For the obvious reasons, I want women to be reminded to go schedule their mammogram and go for their annual screenings. But on a more universal level, I hope it starts a conversation of parents saying, "If anything happens to me, I want this and I want that." It sounds morbid, but because my mother knew she was dying, she discussed with us her not being there, and it helped me and my brother deal with her passing that much better. I don’t want people to be afraid of health or illness or mortality, because it’s a natural part of life.

I know I'm probably the only who watch the show but it has really improved since the first season. The stories are much better when it comes from Ken's personal life.

-Muhammad Ali Jr., son of the late boxer, and his mother Khalilah Camacho-Ali were returning to Ft. Lauderdale Intl. Airport after returning from a Black History Month event in Jamaica
-They were pulled aside while going through customs because of their "Mulim-sounding names," according to family friend/lawyer
-The immigration officials let his mother go after she showed them a picture of herself with her late husband
-Held and interrogated Ali Jr. for two hours, asking him if he is Muslim

so jamaica isn't one of the countries under the travel ban and they're explicitly targeting people who they think may be muslim. COOL

Stars and Their Oscar Jewels: Red Carpet Pay-For-Play

With Karl Lagerfeld's accusation this week that Meryl Streep stiffed him on a $100,000 Oscar dress he made for her in order to wear another designer who is paying her, The Hollywood Reporter looked at the history of red carpet pay-for-play. Some of the highlights:

* In 2008, watchmaker Raymond Weil sued Charlize Theron after they spotted her wearing a Dior watch at an award show when they had paid her $3 million to exclusively wear their own timepieces on the red carpet. Court records revealed that Theron also had pay-for-play deals with Cartier, Montblanc and Chopard to wear their jewels (Chopard paid her $200,000 to wear their jewelry to the Academy Awards that same year).

* In 2011, Us Weekly reported that Anne Hathaway was paid $750,000 by Tiffany & Co. and Gwyneth Paltrow was paid $500,000 by Louis Vuitton to wear their diamonds on Oscar night. Hathaway denied the story, but it was never retracted.

* Paltrow was rumored to have been paid $1 million by Anna Hu for wearing Hu's jewelry with her iconic white caped Tom Ford Oscar gown in 2012.

 Do the Right Thing

Do the Right Thing

About: This film looks at life in the Bedford-Stuyvesant district of Brooklyn on a hot summer Sunday. As he does everyday, Sal Fragione opens the pizza parlor he's owned for 25 years. The neighborhood has changed considerably in the time he's been there and is now composed primarily of African-Americans and Hispanics. His son Pino hates it there and would like nothing better than to relocate the eatery to their own neighborhood. For Sal however, the restaurant represents something that is part of his life and sees it as a part of the community. What begins as a simple complaint by one of his customers, Buggin Out - who wonders why he has only pictures of famous Italian-Americans on the wall when most of his customers are black - eventually disintegrates into violence as frustration seemingly brings out the worst in everyone.

Nicki Minaj comes for Trey Songz before Remy Ma

0

Trey Songz denied that he had sex with Nicki in an instagram video and then tweeted that he would very much like to be excluded from this narrative. Nicki said that she got him 6 plaques, so he should have defended her and denied that he had sex with her even though he already did. Trey told Nicki that she needs to be mad at Remy and used this as an opportunity to #promote himself.

Nicki has also been liking embarrasing tweets saying that the Weeknd knows she's the queen of rap like Bey does, she only needed an instagram post to end Remy who need a 7 minute diss track (lmao and she deleted that instagram post about sales anyways so...), everything Remy said was lies and tabloid shit, her sales are better than Remy's, etc.

Source: Twitter 1, 2, 3, 4

Nicki is fucking embarrasing with her sales obsession and acting like she won with her lame tweets and instagram posts that she ended up deleting... Plus Remy already made sure any sales receipts would be pointless by mentioning Nicki's three 360 deals lmao

'Get Out' wins Friday's box office with nearly $11M ... set to exceed estimate expectations

0
0

Several sources include The Wrap are reporting that Jordan Peele's directorial debut, Get Out has won the Friday box office after raking in $10.8 Million.

This number not only puts the film on track to exceed initial pre-weekend projections but it is expected to knock The LEGO Batman Movie out of the number one spot. While experts are projecting that the release of Logan next week means that it may not hold onto that spot long they are still impressed by the numbers that it has brought in.

Get Out has earned more than twice its budget in a single day in the domestic box office and it's pulling in amazing numbers overall especially considering that it's a horror movie with no real stars and it was released on Oscar Weekend (where most people tend to play catchup with nominee showcases).

This is great news for Jordan Peele who said he has four other social thrillers in the works that he would ideally like to make every other year starting in 2018.

Get Out currently holds a 100% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes based off of 134 reviews from critics.

BRIT award bias?Few PoC win + Sony acts take 2/3+ awards after Sony boss becomes chair of BRITs

0
0

After this year's BRIT awards Sony Music pasted across their website and social media headlines like "Sony Music dominates Brit awards with record making success". But look a little closer and it's no mystery why over two-thirds of acts who took home awards were Sony Music artists.
The new chairperson of the BRIT Awards, who oversaw such record breaking success for Sony Music? None other than Chairman and CEO of Sony Music UK and Ireland, Jason Iley.

Sony artists won 9 out of a possible 13 BRIT Awards for this year. For British acts, Best British Album and Best Male Solo Artist went to the late David Bowie, BRIT critics choice and British Breakthrough act went to Rag’N’Bone, BRIT Icon for Robbie Williams, British Single win for Little Mix, and One Direction won British Artist Video Of The Year. British Global success went to Adele again, though she is under Sony Music in the US not the UK.

The Sony Music UK CEO and new chairman of the BRIT awards had this to say about this years BRIT awards results:
“Everyone at Sony Music is proud and humbled every day to work alongside people with such exceptional creativity, drive and musicianship. I would also like to thank all the brilliant people at Sony Music, whose passion and determination has helped deliver the artists’ vision.”

Favoring Sony Music isn't the only bias the BRIT awards have been accused of; they've also come under fire again this year for not recognizing non white Brits, especially black british, talent; grime legend Wiley has never even been nominated. And they haven't just come under fire in the past for ignoring black British artists, they've also been criticized for not recognizing British Asians - in the awards entire 37 year history British Asians have only won an award 4 times (and only once if you exclude boy band One Direction's wins), despite being the UK's largest non white minority; British Asian singer Jay Sean has never even been nominated.

While there were more PoC nominated than last year when they were criticized for lack of diversity in the British nominees (12 compared to last years 4 non white nominees), there were only 2 black winners this year, with 3 non white winners in total. And if you exclude the win by British girl band Little Mix, of whom 50% are white, only 1 non-white artist, Emeli Sandé, took away an award. This was still an improvement on the 2016 BRIT awards, where every single winner was white.

Particularly glaring to many were the results of the British Male Solo Artist award, where the only white nominee, David Bowie took home the award. The BRIT awards came under fire in 2015 + 2016 for not recognising grime artists such as Skepta or Stormzy, but while they were both nominated this year, neither took home any awards.

Casey Affleck slams Trump as unamerican despite a $5K donation from the Affleck/Middleton Project

Spirit Awards: Casey Affleck calls Trump's policies "Abhorrent" and "Un-American" despite the fact that he and his production company partner, John Powers Middleton gave Trump's post election transition $5K. Middleton has long been involved with republicans, helped fund Trumps campaign and donated to the transition under one of his other businesses as well. It is not known if Affleck approved or is aware that a donation was given in his name but if he's so adamantly against Trump one would think he would avoid having any ties to the president.

Transracial Icon and Activist Queen Rachel Dolezal Almost Homeless?

0
0
Despite scoring a publishing deal for her new book "In Full Color", Dolezal claims she is on the brink of homelessness and living on food stamps. She also insists that no wrongdoing was committed on her part and refuses to apologize. The "I Am African" queen states that she is about to be homeless because no one will hire her lying ass.

For those who don't or choose not to remember (I don't blame you), Dolezal was an American civil rights activist and former president of the Spokane chapter for the NAACP. In 2015, she resigned following allegations that she had lied about her racial identity and other aspects of her biography. After fabricating her life (coming soon to a Lifetime movie near you), her parents came out and said that she was, in fact, a pure as snow Caucasian woman. She continues to believe that she is a black woman.

ONTD, have you ever claimed to be a different race/ethnicity and refused to apologize once people called you out for being a damn fool?

Meryl Streep Ain't Here for Karl Lagerfeld's 'Apology'

0
0

Meryl Streep and Karl Lagerfeld both issued new statements today on the accusations Lagerfeld made over her Oscar gown this week.

(ICYMI, Lagerfeld told WWD that Streep left him with a $100,000+ gown that he made for her to wear at tomorrow's Academy Awards so that she could wear the dress of another designer who agreed to pay her. He called Streep "cheap" and suggested that she could keep the dress anyway because it is larger than sample size).

Lagerfeld's Statement:

“Chanel engaged in conversations with Ms. Streep’s stylist, on her request, to design a dress for her to wear to the Academy Awards. After an informal conversation, I misunderstood that Ms. Streep may have chosen another designer due to remuneration, which Ms. Streep’s team has confirmed is not the case. I regret this controversy and wish Ms. Streep well with her 20th Academy Award nomination.”

Streep's Response:

“In reference to Mr. Lagerfeld’s ‘statement,’ there is no ‘controversy’: Karl Lagerfeld, a prominent designer, defamed me, my stylist and the illustrious designer whose dress I chose to wear, in an important industry publication. That publication printed this defamation, unchecked. Subsequently, the story was picked up globally, and continues, globally, to overwhelm my appearance at the Oscars, on the occasion of my record-breaking 20th nomination, and to eclipse this honor in the eyes of the media, my colleagues and the audience. I do not take this lightly, and Mr. Lagerfeld’s generic ‘statement’ of regret for this ‘controversy’ was not an apology. He lied, they printed the lie, and I am still waiting.
