ontd original: 10 books about 'other' american histories

$

Yes, you could still opt to read another biography of a Founding Father.

1. A People's History of the United States by Howard Zinn

Let's start with the classic. Zinn wrote this to "tell America's story from the point of view of - and in the words of - America's women, factory workers, African Americans, Native Americans, working poor, and immigrant laborers." It's now widely read in high schools and colleges. (Bonus: it is available for free on the author's website.)

2. Lies My Teacher Told Me by James W. Loewen

Its fitting subtitle is: "Everything Your American History Textbook Got Wrong." Another classic, this is both a critique of mainstream American education and an informed retelling of our history.

3. The Studs Terkel Reader by Studs Terkel

Studs Terkel re-popularized oral history, writing twelve books that collected interviews with thousands of Americans about their jobs, their lives, the wars they fought in, and their experiences of race ... just to name a few of his themes. This is a collection of some of his best interviews.

4. Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee: An Indian History of the American West by Dee Brown

Specifically written to tell the Native American story from the perspective of Native Americans, this book has been a classic for more than 30 years. It is sometimes credited with inspiring a new generation of nonfiction about the "victims" rather than the "victors" of American history. It's even been the basis of an award-winning film.

5. I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou

One of the most widely read (and banned!) American autobiographies, this book reflects more than just one woman's life. This is the story of someone who grew up marginalized by our society in almost every way and became its of the most well-loved storytellers. As she wrote in the titular poem, "The caged bird sings of freedom."

6. Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By In America by Barbara Ehrenreich

In the late 90s, journalist Ehrenreich went undercover to discover the true conditions of the American working class. Her book was termed an 'expose' at the time because it revealed how, for example, how minimum-wage workers employed at Walmart were treated. It became a timeless account of the frustrations and sublimated dreams of whole generations of poor Americans.

7. The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America's Great Migration by Isabel Wilkerson

Wilkerson is another author who makes use of the oral histories of everyday Americans: in this books, she tells the story of the 20th century migration of African Americans from the south to the north. Poetic, at times personal, and incredibly detailed -- this book will leave you with a greater appreciation for the cultural shifts that occurred because of this migration. Above all, what that meant for millions of ordinary people.

8. The Feminine Mystique by Betty Friedan

A feminist classic for more than 50 years, this book documented the specific experiences of American, mostly white, middle-class housewives who were relegated to the "domestic sphere." It's both a window into those women's lives and a powerful statement about how gender is still portrayed in American culture.

9. And the Band Played On: Politics, People, and the AIDS Epidemic by Randy Shilts

First published in the late 80s, this is the revised edition of the most widely read, influential nonfiction book about AIDS in America. As the title indicates, it is highly critical of the way the health crisis/pandemic was politicized at the time. It is compelling, frustrating and necessary.

10. Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates

Already a modern classic, this award-winning narrative is both a personal history and a screen on race in modern America. As Toni Morrison's blurb on the cover summarizes: "This is required reading."

Jessica Alba covers Allure and talks about her business and misconceptions people have of her

On people who think she's an environmental nutcase who hates all chemicals:

"Everything is a chemical. Water is a chemical. I'm not against chemicals. I care about human health, and I want whatever is safest and healthiest. Some people can have very extreme points of view. I created the Honest Company because I'm not extreme. I couldn't identify with people who wanted to do everything completely 100 percent from nature. I don't have a garden growing my own organic fruits and vegetables. I don't have an organic farm where I'm raising my own livestock. That's not my reality. So I want the best options that work for me without me feeling like I want to compromise on health or safety. Honest is about that happy medium, and not extreme."

On what motivates her:
"A, I'm a hustler. B, I've been working since I was, like, 12. I've lived all over the world; I've worked all over the world with adults and seen all these different dynamics. I've been part of a lot of businesses' marketing strategies, and I see how they utilize someone like me. I love learning. I'm a sponge. I haven't lost my thirst and desire to learn. Every day is different, and I'm working toward something that I feel really good about. So it's super gratifying."

On the idea that she's not very involved in her company:
"When you're a founder of a company, there's really nothing going on that you're not part of...so when it comes to the design of the site, the display ads, our marketing strategy, I'm part of all those discussions and involved in all those creative assets."

On the idea that her company doesn't create original products and just puts its name on already existing formulas:
"We don't own our own factories. We find best-in-class manufacturers, and then I go work with their chemists to create our formulas, or we make our formulas in-house. It's a very rigorous process of quality assurance and quality control. We have a sourcing department. We have a product-development and R&D department—those are the chemists. And then the product-development creative is on my side. So I say, 'It needs to feel like this; it needs to smell like this; it needs to perform like that; it should be delivered in this type of package.' And then I work with the creative-marketing team. It takes about 18 months to make it and to test it. And then I work with my retail team and the online team so the product feels exactly the same online as it does [on a shelf]."

Tyler Perry offers to pay funeral expenses for 15 month old twins who died after being left in car

Earlier this week, Breal Ellis, a woman from the Atlanta area suffered a great loss when her twin 15 month old daughters Ariel and Alaynah died after being left in a hot car. Ellis had rarely let her daughters out of her sight but left them in the care of their father for a few hours to be by her sister's side as she had gotten into a car accident.

During this time their father became drunk and left the girls in the car for an undisclosed amount of time where they ultimately died. Since then the father has been arrested and faces charges of involuntary manslaughter and reckless conduct.

A grieving Ellis appeared on a local news story that was then seen by filmmaker Tyler Perry. Perry was moved by Ellis who during the broadcast said she didn't know how she was going to pay for the funeral expenses having already lost a child in 2014. He immediately contacted the news station and offered to pay for the funerals of the twins in full. Due to Perry's generosity Ellis no longer has to worry about the costly services and funds that have already been raised for the family's GoFundMe page will be used for counseling for Ellis.
