1. Amanchu! (Genre: Slice of Life)Synopsis: Hikari Kohinata is a cheerful 15-year-old girl who lives near the ocean and she spends much of her time diving as a result. On her first day of high school, she meets a teacher who also likes scuba diving. There's also a 16-year-old classmate, Futaba, who gets dragged along in Hikari's maelstrom as soon as they meet at school. Most of the manga so far details the relationship between the two girls, which quickly seems to move into romantic two girl friendship-territory.
Why you should watch it: While only two episodes in, the series has secured it's spot as one of my favorites from this season. The chemistry between Hikari and Futaba is adorable to watch and I think anyone who is a lesbian or a bisexual woman would enjoy this anime. The synopsis describes the manga as a "romantic two girl friendship" which just means a lesbian relationship. I can't wait to watch their relationship unfold.
2. Mob Psycho 100 (Genre: Action/Supernatural)Synopsis: Kageyama Shigeo (a.k.a. "Mob") is a 8th grader with psychic abilities. He could bend spoons and lift objects with his mind from a young age, but he slowly began to withhold from using his abilities in public due to the negative attention he kept receiving. Now, the only thing he wants is to become friends with a girl in his class, Tsubomi. With his psychic "mentor" (who has no psychic powers), he continues his daily life, attempting to realize his purpose in life.
Why you should watch it: From the creator of One Punch Man, the opening scene shows a psychedelic and visually intense fight that hooks you instantly. After that, you learn more about Mob, his family, and his non-psychic mentor (who provides much comic relief). The animation takes a little bit getting used to when compared to One Punch Man, but if you liked One Punch Man, you'll definitely like Mob Psycho 100.
3. Amaama to Inazuma (Genre: Comedy/Slice of Life)Synopsis: Kouhei Inuzuka is a teacher who has been caring for his little daughter on his own since his wife's death. He's no good at cooking, so he and his daughter Tsumugi have been eating packaged meals from the convenience store. A series of events lead him one evening to a restaurant run by the mother of one of his students, Kotori. Her mother isn't there, but Kotori does her best to feed them both. It turns out Kotori is often alone since her parents are divorced and her mother is frequently not around. The three of them begin to meet and cook tasty food together.
Why you should watch it: If you liked Usagi Drop, but hated the creepy ending. Tsumugi and her father's relationship is so cute and there's quite a bit of humor, especially involving Kouhei (Tsumugi's father) and Kotori (one of his students) trying to figure out how to cook dishes when neither of them know how to cook. I really love this anime for his quirkiness and heartwarming scenes.
4. 91 Days (Genre: Drama/Crime)Synopsis: During Prohibition, the law held no power and the mafia ruled the town. The story takes place in Lawless, a town thriving on black market sales of illicitly brewed liquor. Avilio returns to Lawless after some time away, following the murder of his family in a mafia dispute there. One day, Avilio receives a letter from a mysterious sender, prompting him to return to Lawless for revenge. He then infiltrates the Vanetti family, the ones responsible for his family's murder, and sets about befriending the don's son, Nero, to set his vengeance in motion. Killing brings more killing, and revenge spawns more revenge. How will the 91-day story of these men guided by a tragic fate end?
Why you should watch it: In my opinion, this is the presumptive MVP of the summer season. Similar to Boardwalk Empire, this anime takes place during the Prohibition era and focuses on Avilio Bruno who has become consumed with getting revenge on the Vanetti family for murdering his father, mother, and brother. Only two episodes have aired so far, but it's proving itself to be an iconic anime. Watch if you like crime dramas and like amazing opening songs.
5. Orange (Genre: Shoujo/Slice of Life)Synopsis: One day, Naho Takamiya receives a letter written to herself from ten years in the future. As Naho reads on, the letter recites the exact events of the day, including the transfer of a new student into her class named Kakeru Naruse. The Naho from ten years later repeatedly states that she has many regrets, and she wants to fix these by making sure the Naho from the past can make the right decisions—especially regarding Kakeru. What's more shocking is that she discovers that ten years later, Kakeru will no longer be with them. Future Naho asks her to watch over him closely.
Why you should watch it: Based on the manga of the same name, it focuses on the relationships of a group of high school students. After receiving a letter from her future self, Naho starts to learn more about Kakeru in order to save him in the future. It should be advised that if you're sensitive to topics concerning depression and suicide that you either avoid this series or use coping techniques if you feel yourself becoming upset or going into a panic attack.
6. Shokugeki no Soma: Ni no Sara (Genre: Shonen)Synopsis: The second season of Shokugeki no Souma. Click here to read the synopsis of the first anime.
Why you should watch it: If you're already a fan of the Shokugeki no Soma series or manga or if you'd like an anime that is basically like a competitive reality cooking show but lightly perverted. Despite the ecchi scenes, it's really fun to watch and the ecchi doesn't just include women either.
