Bad news for Moyles Haterz as new role to be found for him at station
Chris Moyles will reinvent himself with a new show at BBC Radio 1 when he leaves the flagship breakfast show in September, station controller Ben Cooper has promised.
The new Radio 1 boss told the Guardian that he was confident Moyles would accept a new role at Radio 1 amid speculation he would move to Radio 2 or a commercial rival.
Moyles will be replaced by Nick Grimshaw as the Radio 1 breakfast show host in September, ending eight-and-a-half years in the coveted morning slot.
"I've got an idea of a new role for him on the station. Maybe we'll surprise people again in a short time," Cooper said on Wednesday.
Asked whether he was confident Moyles would accept a new slot on the station, Cooper added: "I think so because I think he's a phenomenal broadcaster. He did eight-and-a-half years and I would rather he went out on top of his game and he will do that at the end of September. Then it's time for Chris to reinvent himself and to open up a new chapter."
Cooper said suggestions that the 38-year-old Moyles was forced out of the breakfast show because of his age were without foundation, although the station was under pressure to reduce the average age of its listeners.
At 27, Grimshaw is two years younger than Moyles when he started on the breakfast show. The average age of its listenership is 32, but Cooper wants to get that down to the target 15- to 29-year-old demographic.
The Radio 1 controller said that he had had several discussions with Moyles about the timing of his departure from the morning slot before the DJ announced it to his listeners on Wednesday morning.
Cooper told Richard Bacon's BBC Radio 5 Live show that he was prepared for a slight reduction in listenership when Moyles left, but that Grimshaw would help attract a new generation of younger listeners to the station.
Grimshaw, a regular on Channel 4's youth strand T4, was a surprise appointment in some quarters, as the Radio 1 drivetime host Greg James was widely tipped as the frontrunner for the flagship role.
Cooper said James sent him a text message after the news was announced, saying that he was not disappointed and that presenting drivetime was a dream come true.
Cooper added: "Will Greg present the breakfast show in the future? Who knows."
And the replacement...
While we’re aware of Nick (he goes to every celebrity party around… although that may have to stop with his new Radio 1 breakfast slot) – many people aren’t as familiar with the east Londoner. So here’s everything you need to know about the 28 year old...
- He is best mates with One Direction’s Harry Styles after meeting him through housemate Caroline Flack. Although Harry ended the fling, he and Nick have remained close and are often seen drinking in London together.
- Nick is also mates with Kate Moss, Agyness Deyn, Kelly Osbourne, Lily Allen, Sadie Frost, Mollie King, the Geldofs, Henry Holland, Alexa Chung and anyone else who is a bit trendy and lives near Shoreditch.
- His nickname is 'Grimmy' or 'Grimmers' - we've never worked out why.
- Nick grew up in Oldham near Manchester and studied at Liverpool Uni, where he picked up a first class degree, alongside hosting a local radio show – oo-er.
- He doesn’t have a girlfriend – and reckons he hasn’t had one since uni – but likes to surround himself by beautiful women.
- He started presenting on Radio 1 just after he graduated, after seeing Annie Mac at the Hawley Arms and convincing her to let him be her sidekick on Sunday evenings. Grimmy then moved to his current two-hour late night show from Monday to Thursday.
- His TV career started on E4 hosting daily shows – with George Lamb taking his screen test and championing him – before moving over to Freshly Squeezed on Channel 4.
- Nick joined T4 in 2007 and continues to present with them now, along with new Channel 4 show Style The Nation. It's not certain whether he will cut back on his TV work to accommodate his new daily show.
- His guilty pleasure is music by Miley Cyrus. We'll hold him to that one when he starts his breakfast slot.
- Describing broadcasting in the past, Nick said: “I like broadcasting and I love music. It's a fun job and it's a stupid job and that's fine with me.”

I know some people hate Chris Moyles, but he's a veteran broadcaster. (And NOBODY will ever hate him as much as the Daily Mail: Chris Moyles leaves Radio 1: Farewell to the cultural barbarian).
Grimmy is basically an IRL Nathan Barley character, let's be honest, but I think he's ok really.
