Interview: Nikolaj Coster-Waldau & Sibel Kekilli
With Game of Thrones: The Complete Third Season out on Blu-ray and DVD this week, we holed up in a London hotel to chat about the release with a few of the show's cast.
Sitting in a mini-press conference style set up, first up were Nikolaj Coster-Waldau who plays the seemingly villainous and arrogant Ser Jaime Lannister and Sibel Kekilli who plays Shae.
Please note that if you haven't seen all of Season Three the below contains some MASSIVE spoilers.
Jaime is, in many ways, defined by his ability with a sword and to lose that part of him is a huge obstacle. The writing is so strong and good that those scenes afterwards were a lot of fun to shoot.
How would you describe the evolution of Jaime? We start with him sleeping with his sister....Nikolaj:Well he still wants to sleep with his sister! If you were told before the scene in episode one where he's having sex with Cersei and pushes Bran out of the window, if you had the information before that - yes it's his sister but it's true love and they desperately want to be together - and you were then told there's a horrible little evil boy climbing the walls and if that horrible boy told anyone what he saw they would have to kill Cersei's 'lovely' children, little sweet children, Joffrey, wonderful children. And the love of his life would die and he would probably die as well. So if you were told that you would think differently [about him] maybe. He does things because he's all about loyalty and family and wants to protect the people he loves and that then goes through to Brienne. The fact that he meets this woman is huge to him, he's forced to spend so much time with her.
For the first time he does something for someone else outside his family. He risks everything for this woman. The biggest change is that he loses his identity in many ways and he has to re-evaluate who he is or re-discover himself. Then that all goes back to the scene in the bathtub where he reveals this huge....[cue raucous laughter]....yeah that came out wrong! The secret that he's carried around since he was 16. He killed the mad King and he actually perceives that as his proudest moment. But since then he's been the Kingslayer, this dishonourable man. And of all people he tells this woman because they have connected and he sees himself in her.
What similarities do you share with your characters?Sibel: Shae is not a girlie girl, she's a fighter. She feels responsible for girls like Sansa, to rescue her from the bad things around her. I love that about Shae. I hope I'm not a girlie girl even though I'm wearing high heels now [laughs]. And I'm loyal.
Nikolaj: He's a great character to play, I like the fact that he's so conflicted and has all these secrets. It's good writing so he's a whole human, there's always things you can identify with. I dislike that people can jump to conclusions about who you are and sometimes that happens when you're an actor. Someone sees you in a part and just assumes, "Hi Jaime. How's your sister?" And that happens on a huge scale for Jaime because he's known as the Kingslayer, so I identify with that.
There's a lot of female nudity in the show, should there be more male nudity?Sibel: Of course!
Nikolaj: I was naked this season. When I had that huge reveal! [Laughs]Sibel you have great chemistry with Peter Dinklage and the scenes wouldn't work without that. Can you tell us what it is about him as an actor that you find really clicks?Sibel: I love to work with Peter because there are two kinds of actor. One acts just for themselves, they don't listen to you, they don't react when you act and Peter is one of those rare actors that have no vanity, he acts with his eyes. He really listens to me and he reacts when I act and I think this is the secret of good chemistry.
George R.R. Martin must be on the set from time to time. What do you say to him when you see him?Sibel: Please don't kill me. And if you do, let me come back as a zombie.Nikolaj what was your reaction when you saw The Rains of Castamere episode?Sibel: I will be King!
[Laughter]
N: My reaction was that it was amazing. David Nutter directed it and I was astounded by it.
What is most exciting for you about the upcoming Season Four?Sibel: Yeah I'm going to kill Cersei and I will the Queen [laughter]. I can't say much but it will be very hard for Shae. She will fight.Nikolaj: For Jaime it's the fact that the Lannister family's together for the first time and that was really interesting...
Sibel: And he will lose his legs [laughter].
The Rains of Castamere will be hard to top but can you ensure fans that Season Four can do just that?
Nikolaj: It's a very dramatic season and where before you had one or two episodes that peak there are a lot more peaks, it's like one of the hard stages of the Tour de France.
SOURCEawwww Sibel is such a qt, I'm really interested to see how they'll handle the Shae storyline this season...because it could go wrong in so many ways.
