Fox Searchlight and Nate Parker issue statements on his resurfaced rape charges

To recap: at 20 while at Penn State Nate Parker was accused of raping a fellow student along with his friend Jean McGianni Celestin. Parker was acquitted because he had previously had sexual contact with his victim. Celestin was convicted but later had the conviction overturned on appeal because the victim did not want to come forward and testify a second time.

Parker and Celestin allegedly also harassed the victim at school afterwards.

Parker and Celestin remained friends and co-wrote Birth of a Nation. The film premiered at Sundance where Fox Searchlight bought it for $17.5 million.

Today the victim's brother stepped forward to give an interview where he talked about how his sister had been troubled since the rape and had committed suicide in 2012.

“Fox Searchlight is aware of the incident that occurred while Nate Parker was at Penn State. We also know that he was found innocent and cleared of all charges. We stand behind Nate and are proud to help bring this important and powerful story to the screen.”

Nate's statement:

These are my words. Written from my heart and not filtered through a third party gaze. Please read these separate from any platform I may have, but from me as a fellow human being.
I write to you all devastated…
Over the last several days, a part of my past - my arrest, trial and acquittal on charges of sexual assault - has become a focal point for media coverage, social media speculation and industry conversation. I understand why so many are concerned and rightfully have questions. These issues of a women’s right to be safe and of men and women engaging in healthy relationships are extremely important to talk about, however difficult. And more personally, as a father, a husband, a brother and man of deep faith, I understand how much confusion and pain this incident has had on so many, most importantly the young woman who was involved.
I myself just learned that the young woman ended her own life several years ago and I am filled with profound sorrow…I can’t tell you how hard it is to hear this news. I can’t help but think of all the implications this has for her family.
I cannot- nor do I want to ignore the pain she endured during and following our trial. While I maintain my innocence that the encounter was unambiguously consensual, there are things more important than the law. There is morality; no one who calls himself a man of faith should even be in that situation. As a 36-year-old father of daughters and person of faith, I look back on that time as a teenager and can say without hesitation that I should have used more wisdom.
I look back on that time, my indignant attitude and my heartfelt mission to prove my innocence with eyes that are more wise with time. I see now that I may not have shown enough empathy even as I fought to clear my name. Empathy for the young woman and empathy for the seriousness of the situation I put myself and others in.
I cannot change what has happened. I cannot bring this young woman who was someone else’s daughter, someone’s sister and someone’s mother back to life…

I have changed so much since nineteen. I’ve grown and matured in so many ways and still have more learning and growth to do. I have tried to conduct myself in a way that honors my entire community – and will continue to do this to the best of my ability.
All of this said, I also know there are wounds that neither time nor words can heal.
I have never run from this period in my life and I never ever will. Please don’t take this as an attempt to solve this with a statement. I urge you only to take accept this letter as my response to the moment.

Train to Busan has been getting great reviews (96% on Rotten Tomatoes!) and has moved up to 15th place in Korea's Box Office history. The film is out now, but the animated prequel film is coming out tomorrow August 17th, officially =) I haven't had a chance to check out Train yet, but I hope so soon enough, especially with all the buzz surrounding it. Also, anyone else getting I Am A Hero vibes? I'm totally here for that.

Mahershala Ali Done w/House of Cards

In an interview with GQ, the Hayward native (he made the distinction that though he was born in Oakland he was raised in Hayward) said that he's done with House of Cards, which he considers his breakthrough role.

"I’m done with House of Cards. I’ve never talked about it. It’s time to go. I want to do more. There’s only so much space for you to stretch and develop and grow because there are so many characters. I think this is a good time to be an African-American in this industry. I think that the opportunities are shifting and changing because people have spoken out."

He's also very excited about Luke Cage. "It’ll just be amazing for people to get to see an African-American superhero, which there weren’t any when I was growing up."

On how sometimes being the only black person on set has shaped his identity: "[...]If we want to be at the highest level of whatever our field is, we have to be able to navigate both worlds. We all just know that you gotta be able to put that suit on and have a conversation with people that don’t look like you or your family. But it’s interesting being able to step into some of these worlds with white people who will never come to your house. People who are uncomfortable when you’re in an elevator, but I can still be comfortable even though they’re uncomfortable.

It’s also challenging sometimes because you don’t want to be the token either. We’re in a time now where if you’re going to be the representative of all things on a project, you want them to be written in a three-dimensional way where you’re a human being. Not a caricature or someone that’s passing through because they’re checking the diversity box. That’s the thing that I’m conscious of in 2016."

He also talks about how big of a hip-hop fan he is in that he named his cat Nas and has mental playlists for his characters.

Swizz Beatz on #NoCommission Arts Fair Gentrification Protests: "It's okay that they're upset"

$

There's Follow up and more backlash for Swizz Beatz regarding his #NoCommission Arts Fair. You can find the first ONTD post Here. Essentially he created an arts fair in the Bronx as a Bronx native but forgot to actually focus on the Bronx. He stated he was bringing Arts to the Bronx, then went on to say how much he worked with the local art institutions and artists already creating great stuff in the area. One week after his events, he defends himself, but the community is adding names to its "ShameShameShame" list.

Swizz on the event, with VIBE:

VIBE VIVA: Why this location, this warehouse?
I grew up like 12 blocks from here, in St. Mary’s Projects. I almost died in these same exact streets, so to be able to come back and have a celebration and bring people from those streets and to see something that I know they’re not going see in them streets.

(Addressing the lack of Bronx Artists:)

They didn’t have to get on an airplane to see such diverse works, and that’s why I didn’t have only Bronx artists in the show. I have Bronx artists in the show, but my thing is, I’m a global thinker, and if I was from the Bronx, I would want to have my imagination leave outside of the Bronx for five minutes, even though I don’t have a plane ticket to go. So when people was like trying to protest, I spoke to everybody because I knew they didn’t really understand the mission. Most of them after I spoke to them understood it. The rest, they just going to be mad, period, and it’s okay that they’re upset.

VIBE VIVA: Right, because it’s being gentrified.
I said to them, “Listen, I don’t own this property. I’m not a real estate developer. What’s going to happen to this property after this show is already bought. The plans are already done. So let’s go out with a blast at least.

VIBE VIVA: What does coming back to the South Bronx at this very moment signify?
... I’m not just now coming back to the Bronx—I funded a school in the Bronx called Bronx Arts for a long time... I just did an activation on the Bronx museum with unknown artists and projected their work on the Bronx Museum... I’m on the board at the Brooklyn museum, but I [also worked] for the Bronx Museum because this is where I’m from.

(Swizz goes on to complain that people don't publicize those parts of his involvement... which is true.)

Despite his recent interview, the community has complaints. They protested his event and spilled some info about his attempts to stifle their protests. A few activists remarked on the event, his role, and future events.

Bronx Blaqlist Co-Founder Rosaly Ruiz wrote: "Brooklyn native Fabulous performed on day 2 of the Arts Festival, shouting 'Yo Where Brooklyn At!?' to which 80% of the audience cheered and roared. DMX shouts 'Where's the Bronx at?!" And there was .... quiet. Silence. (Source 1)

According to artists and local activists John "Crash" Matos & Edwin Pagan "[Swizz] sensed that something was wrong. It wasn't him. It was the people he was working with, who were excluding some of the artists... " They further paint the situation of the sponsors searching for a poster boy, a famous celebrity, to head the event. They encourage him to do another event next year, but now with knowledge of the local issues. (Source 2)

Local blogger Ed Garcia Conde, of Welcome 2 The Bronx, a local publication that addresses gentrification and corruption in the Bronx, previously remarked that he and Swizz will work on an arts event on neutral grounds, away from Rubenstein's property. "No date or logistics is set for this event, but the will and commitment are there by Swizz Beatz because he wants to not only give back to the community, but to be able to do something for the very very concrete for the community he came from." (Source 3) Conde however is facing backlash as well.

Artist Shellyne Rodriguez, a member of Take Back the Bronx, met with Swizz. He offered a closed-door meeting with gentrifer Keith Rubenstein to avoid protests. Rodriguez refused, unlike Welcome 2 The Bronx's Ed Garcia Conde who wrote the article sourced in the last ONTD post on this. (Source 4)

Rodriguez says: “We worked all winter long to make [Rubenstein] a pariah in the Bronx – for the Macabre Suite party (The 2015 Halloween party where they painted the 'Bronx is Burning' perseption of the borough so they could house a celebrity-filled, obnoxious party) and the whole Piano District renaming. But, Swiss Beatz undid all that in four days. All that work. Now, Rubenstein is associated with that cool party with the Ferris Wheel. It’s irresponsible. Swizz has the street cred and the social capital, and he’s lending it to real estate and contributing to pushing us out.” (Source 5)

OP Note: You can find the first ONTD post Here. Ever stepped into a hot mess of a situation, seeing roses and tulips, only to sift through the turd later? Hindsight is 20/20.

Do you feel like football fans are racist toward you?

“It’s not racism. Everybody’s entitled to their own opinion.”

So if it’s not that, what is it, do you think?

“I’ll let you be the judge. I don’t look at it like that. I look at it like some people have certain beliefs, and I have my own belief, and we can agree to disagree on certain things. But this is what makes sports so amazing, that we can start a discussion around a table, in the newspaper, in the magazines, that will get people’s attention. And that’s what sports does.”

In January, right before the Super Bowl, you said: “I’m an African-American quarterback that may scare a lot of people because they haven’t seen nothing that they can compare me to.”

“I don’t want this to be about race, because it’s not. It’s not. Like, we’re beyond that. As a nation.”

You really think so?

“Yeah. I mean, you bring it to people’s attention. But after that, that’s it.”

Of course he's not! They were just hanging out at an Apple Store in LA with mutual friend Taco Bennett! I'm sure some of his fans think he is too good for a Kardashian / Jenner and are seething at them hanging out at all! Is the Klan holding the album hostage, ONTD? Should we hack Kris Jenner's iCloud?

And now for an actual Frank Ocean update:

-Frank Ocean's channel orange producer Malay, was asked via Reddit AMA, why the album hasn't dropped yet and he responded: "First of all we all massively appreciate and love you guys, Frank has told me this himself many times, (ok but why hasn't he updated the fans himself! he has a tumblr.) To be fair tho, art cannot be rushed. It's about making sure the perfect aesthetic for the situation has been reached. To do that takes constant tweaking, trial, and error. That goes for any creative situation."

tdlr: it's not ready!
