White person defends Sarah Silverman's blackface, gets READ by Crissle

$

- Crissle from "The Read" podcast was invited to a talk about race and comedy, hosted by our ~white allies of NPR

- Some fratbro looking ~discrimination lawyer singles out Crissle, telling her that she can't understand Sarah Silverman doing in blackface because she “takes her work at face value.”

Reference to the fuckery:

(You wish, heffa)

- He goes on: “I don’t think she’s making fun in any way, shape, or form about black people when she does blackface. Because for those of us who know the history of blackface, we know that not only did white people do blackface but black entertainers had to do blackface to get jobs!”

- Crissle then procedes to tear his fuckass logic apart with a good ole read.

“You have to be really white to say this. First of all, I can absolutely say that you’re racist for being a white woman in effing 2014 … to put on blackface and go on television. Yes, I can absolutely call you racist for that. You understand the history behind it and you did it anyway. That is racist.”

- He then used the argument that Crissle didn't know Sarah Silverman and therefore couldn't ~judge her

- Then shit gets real and Crissle shut him down real quick.

“I don’t have to know what’s inside Sarah Silverman’s head. She didn’t put out a book called Sarah Silverman’s Diary, “Here, read my innermost thoughts and see how I came to these fuck-ass conclusions that I have today.” She got on TV in blackface and decided that that was funny and it’s not. And you as a white man trying to tell me that my feelings aren’t valid because I don’t know her is a crock of shit. That’s bullshit. You don’t get to tell me that the way I feel about that doesn’t matter or it isn’t real. And that’s why I go on my show every week and say what I need to say because white people like you think you have a goddamned point.”

The Princess Xena rallying cry in the audience at the end had me rolling

You can listen to a follow up on this week's The Read. Crissle says that the man went to see her at the end of the panel to tell her that she didn't understand his point lmao. How awful can you be

NYT Publishes TERF's Op-Ed on Caitlyn Jenner

White feminist Elinor Burkett published transphobic garbage masquerading as a thinkpiece and we should all really examine whether the existence of trans women is like, totally hurting feminism, y'all.

Highlights(?):

- Those who haven't lived their "whole lives" as women aren't real women

- The argument of being "trapped in the wrong body" is 'offensive' because it reduces women to their body parts, and it's like a white person transitioning to black and expecting to be welcomed into the black community(????)

- Trans women don't qualify as women because they haven't experienced pregnancy scares and periods, as well as... sexual harassment, wage disparity, and rape

- Trans women like Jenner who define womanhood through certain notions of femininity (nail polish, makeup, etc) haven't lived through the struggles of "real" women

- Trans women who have transitioned later in life like Jenner have male privilege

- Further ranting about how trans activists bully cis women

- Misgenders Jenner multiple times, switching between Bruce/he and Caitlyn/she

first off, who said Caitlyn Jenner represents the entire trans community? the subject of her family's obsession with fame and celebrity is an entirely different topic than her transition. why does the article frame trans women as the sole agents of patriarchal femininity? also, defining womanhood by the amount of rape and misogyny you've experienced is all the way fucked up

smdh. remember when this dumbass kanye'd her own film?

#Mckinney Police Brutality Video + Celebs React

(Warning: video contains disturbing police violence, foul language, and excessive whiteness)

This video was posted on Saturday showing multiple police offers as well as random white passerby assaulting multiple black teens who were leaving a pool party after a fight broke out. As per the video's description:

"A fight between a mom and a girl broke out and when the cops showed up everyone ran, including the people who didn't do anything. So the cops just started putting everyone on the ground and in handcuffs for no reason. This kind of force is uncalled for especially on children and innocent bystanders.
-EDIT-
To some people saying that the cop pulled out his taser on the kid, it was not a taser it was a gun."

The main agitator in the video, Cpl. Casebolt deleted all social media and has been placed on administrative leave with pay:

- Kate was escorted off a flight by officers at London Luton Airport Sunday due to "disruptive behavior".
- She apparently called the pilot a "basic bitch".
- When a flight attendant refused to give her another drink she reached into her bag and pulled out a bottle of vodka.

I was really nice with this photo choice, she has some awful ones that I could have chosen.

Field Trip Music Festival Brings Rock to the heart of Toronto

Sharon & Bram played the children's section; The Arkells shone for the city; My Morning Jacket rocked the house down

I volunteered at Field Trip music festival this weekend and am reporting my findings!

Day 1

Sharon & Bram, the beloved Canadian children's group (sans Lois Lillenstein, who recently passed away from cancer) performed twice-- once for an enthusiastic audience of children and adults, and then for an ecstatic crowd of adults and children. Sharon worked the crowd, Bram brought the humour, and together the duo brought a hint of nostalgia and warmth into the heart of the festival.

Best of the day: Hip-hop duo De La Soul performed on the Garrison stage and delivered an outstanding set, getting the crowd on their feet and setting an example of excellence that every act to come modeled after. The energy of the festival was at its best for their set-- people were energized, relaxed, and loving every minute of it.

The War on Drugs took the stage and showed out with epic guitar solos by lead vocalist Adam Granduciel and tuned the crowd solidly back to the on stage quality that defined the day. To this young Canadian, they struck me as an American version of Rush. Their sleeper hit last year, Lost in the Dream, showed how the band is shaping their future are one of the great rock bands of today.

Toronto favourites the Arkells brought in scores of dedicated fans who showed the unfamiliar just how the city is making its bid as a major music power. A staple of the Toronto music scene, it was clear that their presence had drawn in many of the festival's attendees.

Purity Ring performed on the Fort York stage just after sundown, and were plagued by technical problems, cutting out the entire sound setup throughout the performance. Lead singer Megan James was visibly upset at the persistent technical problems, which thinned the crowd as Brittany Murphy's vocals consumed the festival grounds.

Brittany Howard bringing my icon to life:

Drawing people in like moths to a flame, Alabama Shakes closed out the night to a huge swell of support. They were the final act in a line-up so effective that festival organizers Arts & Crafts will no doubt be expanding next year.

Day 2

Day two I didn't see as many acts, but the Garrison stage had some duds. I hear the Fort York stage had a better line up. Lee Fields and the Expressions revitalized the crowd in front of Garrison stage and Father John Misty kept the crowd going, but mostly the day was spent in bubbling anticipation of My Morning Jacket.

Marina & the Diamonds performed, but relied noticably on her backing vocals. It got the crowd moving despite that, since so many people there clearly loved her music, and loved the injection of energy her pop tunes brought to the tired festival goers.

The final act of the night showed their performance acumen in every note played and ever move struck. Lead singer Jim James mirrored the huddled masses who stuck it out through the risk of rain, raising his hood in a parody of the ponchos and hoodies pulled tight through the crowd.

Flirting with the crowd, James almost got the crowd into full-on party mode, but even calling the rain down from the skies couldn't raise the energy to the energy of day 1. They gave an epic performance, but they were asking for more than the crowd could deliver after the cold, rainy day-- I shouted myself hoarse, but even I was so exhausted I could barely move after sundown.

There were some amazing moments where it literally felt like they called the rain though. If it had started pouring, I think the party would have been insane.

Bonus: Just found this video of the first 22 minutes of MMJ's set, full thing was 90 mins

Matt and Amy Roloff from Little People, Big World file for divorce; Jeremy Roloff launches website

omg love is dead

also, asshole son jeremy roloff has launched a site called life or bust:

What is #lifeorbust

The idea behind Life or Bust is simple. To not just be alive, but to become alive.

Our goal is to create a community of people who are excited about life and are willing to surrender comforts and reform habits in order to experience it.

A community of doers. People who hear the little voice in their head, or inclinations of their heart and they act upon them.

These "whispers of the soul" are the thoughts we so often suppress and dismiss. The thought to wake up early and go for a run, or not to watch another episode, but to go fix that bike in the garage. The whispering sense to get off of instagram, or your phone and start a book, or just watch the people walk by. We need to start experiencing our now and living in our present instead of viewing the present of others.

We are a community that refuses to let our time, and our life, pass us by while we are looking down at a screen.

Life or Bust is the aching desire to actively press into life and to make easy what we have forgotten to do. Talking to strangers, making eye contact, not doing anything and being okay with it, watching and listening to our own present.

A community that is alive and radiates because of it.

Life or Bust is a way of being and our decision is simple yet vital, to chase Life, or bust.

Five years ago today, Lady GaGa released her video for my all time favourite song by her... Alejandro. I love this video and its plays on gender, religion and dominance. Steven Klein to the core.

It's clear looking back on this time that GaGa was dealing with her ED at this time... her size in this video in particular is shocking. She looks sickly.

Looking forward to new music from her.

GFOTY, an artist signed to indie buzz label PC Music, has come under fire for racist comments that appeared in a recent interview. The source of the interview has censored the original image of her iMessages, but theQuietus was able to get a screengrab of the original.

In her iMessage, GFOTY refers to Malian kora players Toumani & Sidiki Diabaté as “Bombay Bicycle Club blacked up.” She has since responded, saying that she was trying to make a joke about appropriation but her joke fell flat.
