It's no secret that Madonna speaks her mind (hey, did you know she doesn't like hydrangeas?), so when the press started comparing her to the likes of Lady Gaga, she had a few things to say on the matter. Earlier this month, the Material Girl callously commented on Gaga's "Born This Way," calling it "a wonderful way to redo my song." That in itself is pretty much a slap in the face, but now she's extended her wrath even further by inferring that the 25-year-old singer isn't as talented as Britney Spears in the March issue of The Advocate. Ouch.
When asked what she thinks of Mama Monster, Madonna at first cooly remarked, "I have no thoughts. What was the question?" But after some prodding about how Gaga has influenced today's gay youth, much as she did in the '80s and '90s, the hydrangea-hater retracted her claws a little, saying, "It seems genuine. It seems natural, and I can see why she has a young gay following. I can see that they connect to her kind of not fitting into the conventional norm. "I mean, she's not Britney Spears. She's not built like a brick sh-thouse." And out come the claws again. I'm not even sure what she really means in regards to the whole "brick sh-thouse" thing, but I do know that it was a definite diss. And to imply that Gaga isn't nearly as musically talented as B-Spears? Low blow.
It could be that Madonna lashes out about Gaga because she doesn't like the idea of being out-shadowed by a newer generation, especially by someone who others believe resemble her. Is it fair? No. But it's not completely unrelatable, although Madonna has chosen to deal with it in a seemingly childish way. At least we know she's fully capable of expressing herself...I guess you really do practice what you preach.
