The BBC's Sherlock series has won three Specsavers Crime Thriller Awards, including a Best Actor 'Dagger' for Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays Sherlock Holmes.

Sherlock was the biggest winner at last night's Specsavers Crime Thriller Awards 2012, picking up three awards.

Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays Sherlock Holmes in the series, was named Best Actor, while Martin Freeman won the award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Holmes's sidekick Dr Watson.

The BBC program, which has won three Baftas to date, was also awarded the 'TV dagger' for best television series.

Sherlock, based on Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes character, was launched by the BBC in 2010. A second series of three 90-minute long programs was broadcast during the 2011-12 Christmas and New Year period. A third series is scheduled to be filmed early next year.
Other winners at the Crime Thriller Awards included Tinker Tailer Soldier Spy, which won the Film award, Danish crime drama The Bridge, which was named best international television series, and Gene Kerrigan, who won in the best thriller book category with The Rage.
