Disney and Marvel Studio's "The Avengers" hit $1.5 million on Sunday, thanks to an unexpected Labor Day Weekend re-release and marketing push. Disney increased the theater count to 1,700 on Friday, exploiting the long holiday weekend to push the superhero blockbuster over huge milestone.

Box Office Mojo released the weekend totals on Sunday, "The Avengers" earned $1.7 million pushing the US Domestic Gross over $620 million and the worldwide total to $1.501 billion.

"The Avengers" was already the No. 3 film of all time behind "Titanic" ($2.2 billion) and "Avatar" ($2.8 billion), both from filmmaker James Cameron.

The Joss Whedon directed film has been a massive success, credited with Disney's recent announced profits. A sequel will be written and directed by Whedon, arriving in theaters in 2015 as the climax to the next phase of Marvel superhero films.

Labor Day is not included in that tally as the release of the Blu-ray/DVD is set for September 25 with 30 minutes of additional deleted scenes and featurettes.

"Avengers" stars Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk, Chris Evans as Captain America and Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow.
