Superhero Hype reports that comic book legend Joe Kubert passed away today at the age of 85.
Kubert started at DC in 1943 as an artist for the Hawkman comics. He may be best-known for creating the Viking Prince in the first issue of The Brave and the Bold, and for his work in DC’s military comics like G.I. Combat and Our Army at War, in which he created Enemy Ace and Sgt. Rock. Kubert also became DC’s Director of Publications in the 1960′s & 70′s, for which he brought Tarzan to the company.
In 1976, Kubert founded The Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art in Dover, New Jersey. The school made students into great artists, including his two sons Adam and Andy, who have become popular artists in their own right.
DC was planning to make a new series called Joe Kubert Presents which features stories and artwork by Kubert starting in October. As of press time, no word has been issued whether the series will continue in his memory.
