Demi Lovato has been making headlines this year, and not just for her role on X Factor. Every time the 19-year-old hits the red carpet, fans can't stop tweeting about her hair. Blonde, pink, blue, high, low, and even tied up with bondage tape—the girl's got some serious beauty mojo. We caught up with the star to find out more about her beauty routine and how her newfound confidence has changed her style.

Do you ever wear your hair the same way twice?
"I love changing my hair a lot—I think it's fun. I used to always want to dye my hair blue and purple and pink when I was younger. But I was busy trying to make it in the industry as an actress, and it was hard to go in for auditions with blue hair. And so when I heard of the dip dye trend, I loved it, and felt like I could finally dye my hair blue. You know you've made it when you can dye your hair blue."

You wear it in a lot of interesting styles too. Have there been any you weren't sure about?
"I did this twist thing on the top of my head and I was super self conscious about it at first. I didn't know if I liked it or not. But as I wore it longer I felt more confident. I was a little scared of taking a risk."

And your favorite style so far?
"At the Teen Choice Awards, my hair was slicked back into a really high ponytail. I used to wear my hair down all the time because I was self conscious about my face being round or something and I feel like long hair sometimes makes you feel taller. But I like wearing my hair up now because I feel more confident and it's fun."

How do you take care of it?
"I really love deep conditioning my hair. I use a Wella hair mask and leave it on for five minutes. And I wait as long as I can before I need to wash my hair. I think that's the best thing girls can do for their hair because washing it a lot makes your scalp really dry."

You also have amazing skin. What's your secret?
"I get a facial once every three months from this place called Blue Medi Spa. And I drink a lot of water. But the most important thing is not sleeping in my makeup. I like the Neutrogena face wipes and the Biore Pore Unclogging Scrub. Then I use a toner from Mario Badescu. And I moisturize with Olay Complete All Day UV Moisturizer. I also use night creams from Mario Badescu."

When you do wear makeup, do you like playing up your eyes or your lips?
"During the summer, I think it's important to keep your look natural and fresh so I actually accentuate my skin. I do a lot of contouring and highlighting my cheekbones with a mineral bronzer from M.A.C. And I always do my eyebrows. I like to keep them in tip-top shape."

Do you get your eyebrows done?
"I do them myself, because one time I got them done and the lady nearly took my eyebrows off completely and I've been traumatized ever since. To shape them during the day, I'll use the Anastasia Eyebrow Compact."

What are your beauty splurges?
"My splurges are only on concealer and foundation. I use a Make Up For Ever concealer and I mix it with an Estée Lauder 12-hour concealer so it stays really well throughout the day—literally 12 hours. For foundation, I use a really light Chanel foundation—the Vitalumière Aqua Ultra-Light Skin Perfecting Makeup. Everything else I use you could get at a local drugstore."

Spray tans, eyelash extensions, manicures?

"I get spray tans in the summer when I'm on tour or have red carpet things where I need color really fast. But I don't like spray tans because when I work out, it gets white around the sports bra area when I sweat. And it gets streaky. It's just not cute. And I do get manicures, but I only go to places that do really cheap manicures. I feel like overpriced manicures are really overrated. My local nail salon does just as good a job."

What's your beauty routine like on X Factor?
"I'm in hair and makeup for an hour and a half to two hours because I like to do my makeup and relax at the same time. I don't like to feel rushed. And we like to change up my look. Sometimes we'll go really natural, and sometimes really edgy."

What's the best beauty tip you've picked up from years of being in the makeup chair?
"The best thing I ever did for myself was switch from glasses to contacts. That helped boost my transition from going from my awkward phase to being confident. I use Acuvue 1-Day Moist contacts (Lovato is a spokesperson for the brand)."
