According to this reliable source, it seems like one of the two “classic monsters” [mentioned by Producer Marcus Wilson in DWM #441] that are slated to be returning for the 7th series of Doctor Who
may possibly be the Yeti, formerly seen in two episodes of the 2nd Doctor’s adventures: The Abominable Snowmen and The Web of Fear. If you recall, and even if you don’t, the Yeti are actually lumbering metal robots (complete with floaty silver balls) acting under the control of the Great Intelligence. The GI is a disembodied sentient entity in search of a suitable corporal body; along with a strong desire to take over the Earth. So far, it hasn’t been successful.
Interesting enough is this lovely piece of art that was done by Peter McKinstry way back in Russell T. Davies’ time.
Always wondered if this was designed for a possible reappearance of these monsters or just McKinstry having fun drawing Doctor Who stuff on the side for his own entertainment. Anyway, check his site out, he worked on the show for quite awhile, mostly in RTD’s era, and on the 5th series of Moffat’s, so if you’ve been watching awhile, you’ve already seen a lot of his conceptual art incorporated into the show. Of course, in this new design they are furless; however who knows what to expect from a redesign. The original Yet looked more like this:
More Teddy than Tin… if you ask me. It’s very likely we will see a totally different incarnation of the Yeti next time around.
And as a side note, Marcus Wilson, Producer of Doctor Who, has announced via Twitter that the Production office for Series 7 is now open for business. Not long to go until filming starts.
Oh, and looks like River will be back in Series 7, but Steven Moffat has already hinted at that last month at the screening of The Doctor, The Widow and The Wardrobe.
