Twilight's Biggest Fan Nuttymadam breaks her silence

Why did you start doing YouTube videos?

I started about four years ago. I’d never got into a book as much as I did with Twilight, so I went online and found a huge community of fans. It was amazing so many people cared and I wanted to be part of it. I found out they were making a film so I put together some photographs of the characters with music. The first video was the most basic, cheesy thing. I didn’t even realise I had video editing software on my computer.

Does it make you feel part of the fan community now?

Absolutely. As people watched my videos, I felt accepted by the fans. I now have friends I wouldn’t have had if it wasn’t for Twilight. It’s changed me. I’m more confident and I’ve got a better social life. I go to  premieres and do different things.

What was the appeal of the books?

The love story. The whole thing of ‘she’s a human but, oh no, he’s a vampire’. I know it’s cheesy but I love it.

Your previous videos got attention on gossip websites – what did that feel like?

Perez Hilton first tweeted one of my videos in 2009 and it was on a TV show a  couple of days later. It was a shock.

Do you enjoy the attention?

Yes, I love Twilight and I’ll never stop defending it. It’s a buzz to know that I’m part of it now in some way. People have said I’ve inspired them to do their own videos, which is great. I’m just myself in the videos – sometimes I’ll swear or be an idiot or a bit over the top, the  opposite of how I am at work, but it’s quite liberating. If people see me like that maybe it reassures them that they’re not so strange after all.

You seem quite upset in this current video – why?

I thought the story about Kristen Stewart cheating on Robert Pattinson wasn’t true. But then, just before doing the video, I got an email from a friend about the statement Kristen had released. That was when I realised she’d really done it. I was angry and upset – why would you cheat on Robert Pattinson? I couldn’t understand it.

Why are you so invested in it?

I feel protective and that I should stand up for them. People were making  accusations and jumping to conclusions, which bothered me to the point where I thought I had to get involved.

In hindsight, do you think you went over the top?

No. I wouldn’t say something in my videos I wouldn’t say to the person to their face.

What do your work colleagues think of it?

My boss isn’t massively keen. He knew about the videos when he hired me. He doesn’t judge me but he’s not interested in Twilight.

What about your friends and family?

I have friends who aren’t  Twilight fans and it doesn’t get in the way. I know they’ll accept me, no matter what people say about me online.

You’ve received thousands of abusive comments over this video – do you read them?

I’ll look at some of them. People say horrible things and make fun of me because I’m big or different but I don’t mind – they’re still watching the video and putting it on their Facebook and listening to what I have to say.

Does knowing you’ll get more views encourage you to make more extreme videos?

It encourages me to be myself and if that annoys people, that’s fine. Some might say: ‘You’re such a bad actress’, or call me a whale – I just think: ‘Is that the best you can do?’ Putting a nasty comment on someone’s YouTube page?

There are so many of them, though.

I got a bit down at first but now I’m honestly not bothered. I was picked on at school and it taught me the importance of ignoring stuff like that. If I didn’t have that attitude, then I wouldn’t do videos in the first place.

What was meeting Robert Pattinson like?

It was at a premiere. He was on the red carpet and someone pointed me out. He said: ‘Video girl’ and gave me a hug and was really nice. I was blown away. I remember thinking it wouldn’t get better than that but it has. I didn’t think there’d be this much interest in a four-minute video of me crying over someone cheating when I don’t even know them. It’s baffling.

Are you misunderstood?

Some people think I earn thousands of pounds from the videos and that I’m acting and just pretend to love Twilight, which isn’t true. It’s real. I’ve spent thousands of pounds on going to conventions and being part of the Twilight community. It’s a huge part of my life.

The films are coming to an end – how will you cope?

I don’t know. It’s like a bereavement. It all stops soon, which is kind of what got to me about the Rob and Kristen thing – they’re ending, the films are ending, the conventions are ending, no more books. It’s nice I’ve been part of it but it’s devastating.
