Holy Mother Lucy and Saint Jonathan

Show Creator Robert Doherty  on Genderbending Watson: video

“When this opportunity arose, I did a lot of research — psychological assessments of original characters by actual doctors — and Holmes struggled a bit with women. He struggled with people in general, but there are moments when he doesn’t quite get the fairer sex. It made me laugh: the idea of what would be more trying than Sherlock Holmes living with a Watson who’s also a woman. It really shouldn’t make a difference; it’s a challenge of the series to not turn it into a will-they-or-won’t-they. It’s not about that, it’s about honoring the source material and … the bond.

You can watch the panel here (sorry. can't embed and it's US-restricted. smh.)
Part 1Part 2Part 3Part 4

For tldr crowd:

Jonny: Sherlock struggles with addiction. The Watson relationship is going to help that hopefully.

Lucy: Watson is flawed. She is dealing w/ Sherlock's issues to mask her own, but he sees right through that.

Lucy on the controversy on her casting: You have to be a pioneer. If I didn't try anything different I'd still be doing a Calgon ad.

Robert Doherty: Sherlock's father will cast a shadow - we will eventually get to build & make him part of the series.

Jonny: You can expect an updated version of a classic relationship. Not romantically.Just a great relationship period.

Robert Doherty: it would be a great shame to do a Sherlock project and not have Moriarty appear at some point in time.
