"I'd rather be funny than sexy", says Emma Stone
She loves to bake cakes and doesn't exercise, is there anything more normal than this? The Amazing Spider-Man's girlfriend spoke with Glamour.
"Hi, I'm a scorpion. I love petunias. My favorite color's red, my favorite ice cream's cookie dough. My favorite movie genre's comedy", jokes Emma Stone, before sitting at Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man's round table in Cancún. After that she joined a more intimate interview, with only three journalists.
The 23 year old actress plays Gwen Stacy, the first love interest of the movie's lead. The super hero, played by Andrew Garfield, became her boyfreind during filming. Emma doesn't talk about that, but her refusal in dissecting her relationship is pleasant and funny, just like she always seems to be.
The actress spoke with Glamous about fashion, fame and Brazil.
What's the disavantage of becoming famous so quickly?
The only one is the loss of privacy, have guys outside your house. It's all new to me, it just happened.
Is is a papparazzi or a stalker?
A papparazzi! Wow, thank god it's not a stalker, I haven't even thought about it...
So we can't ask abything about your personal life.
Well, I don't talk about it, but you can ask whatever you want...
Are you in a relationship?
I'd never talk about this (laughs). But you can ask what you want (laughs). You're free! Freedom of press, man! (laughs)
What do you do when you're not shooting anything?
I like to spend time with the people I love. Because I can't really see anyone while I'm shooting in a location. And even when I'm shooting in town, the work days are long. I travel a lot as well. So I take that time to meet people when I'm not filming. I'd also like to read more and learn more, take some classes.
Did you have to train for the part?
They said I could train with Andrew's trainer, so I thought that was a good opportunity to get in shape for the first time in my life. It was awful (laughs). It's nice to be fit, but the work to get there is not fun.
But do you regularly exercise?
Not frequently. When you travel you don't really have a routine. So I spend weeks without doing anything. But it's something very important and I like to be healthy, so I need to work on that.
Did you do any sports in school?
No, but I danced. I danced for ten years. Hip Hop (laughs). It's very cool! I did a little bit of ballet and tap dancing as well, but generally just hip hop.
And you sing too?
A little, my struggle's not to lose my voice.
Do you feel pressured by Hollywood to change anything in your body?
Yeah. You see yourself too much... I don't wanna watch my movies anymore, because watching your face that big is awful... No one should go through that! (laughs) I'm trying not to see myself anymore. And now it's in 3D! Not only am I big like that, but I keep jumping out of the screen. But I don't wanna worry too much about that, because I'm not a model, I'm an actress. I wanna look like a normal person. It's important to me that I'm able to play many different parts instead of being put in a specific box. It's good to have the appereance of a human being.
You said in an interview that you thought it was weird when you saw an actress playing a teacher with tonned biceps...
Yeah, how did she found time? (laughs) Of course I know there are teachers in that world that find time to have those biceps, they get up early and work on it. But I don't know... In terms of phisical appereance, I wanna be faithful to the character in some way.
You like to bake cakes, right?
Oh yeah! During the filming of TASM, I was baking like a psychopath! (laughs) Like three different things a day.
Is it baking cakes your escape?
Yes. I don't do anything for months. When I was filming, I think it had a stabilizing effect, because it's controlled, logical, precise. It makes sense to me, looking back, that I needed something like that: I do this and it happens that. Rather than thinking about what's going to happen... I want to go back to bake because it's fun, not for psychological reasons.
Do you like to do domestic things at home?
I have an aesthetic deficiency (laughs). It's true, I'm not a visual person. I have a good memory, I remember words and feelings, but not images, of how people used to look. I know how my mom looks, but the details of her face escape me when I'm not with her (laughs). I know how she makes me feel and the sound of her voice. That's how I learn. To try and decorate my place or choose an outfit it's beyond my capabilities, I have no clue.
But you always looks good on the red carpet.
Yeah, but that's because I have a stylist, Petra Flannery, who knows how to put it all together. As time goes by I'd like to know more. For example, I've been challenging myself to paint, but what's in my head doesn't have a connection with the result on the canvas. I know how I want my house to look like but I don't know how to get there.
Do you spend a lot of time taking care of yourself, beauty wise?
No... I wash my face and use moisturizer. I have a few allergies, so I usually wear oils and Aveeno. My beauty regime has more to do with my allergies than anything else.
You're in both, the most sexy and most funny women's lists. Witch one do you prefer?
What do you think? (laughs) It's very flattering to be in the most sexy, but my goal has always been to make people laugh.
Were you like that in school?
I was home schooled through High School, but before that I enjoyed being the class clown. It was a strange combination of wanting to be the teacher's pet and the class clown. I was a nightmare, essencially!
You never had a crush on an actor?
I'll never answer this... Because I meet these people!
You don't have anyone's poster in your room?
No! I meet these people, imagine how awkward that'd be! (laughs) I can't do this anymore, I can't make lists. I can't go like: "Hmm, that guy's cute!". Because you might meet the guy, which is nice, but... (laughs)
When you started, did you have a plan B in case your career didn't work out?
I'd like to be a journalist, because I think we have similar jobs. You analise people. I love to ask questions. I'd rather I was making them now...
Why did you choose New York to live?
Becasue people have different jobs in NYC, whereas in LA it's one single industry... It's nice to be in a place where people have other interests and can talk about other things besides the Entertainment Industry. But, that being said, the weather in LA is great, I have friends in LA and a place there. I'm lucky to be able to be in both. But I think I'd go crazy if I was in LA full time.
You were in Brazil recently. Do you remember anything? What impressions did you have?
Of course I remember! Rio was incredible, we stayed at the Copacabana Palace. The food was surrealIt was a good trip.
Did you drink caipirinha?
Yes! A strawberry one!
Thank you for your time
It was a pleasure!
I love the answer she gave about hollywood changing her body
