"Cœur de Pirate, the girl-woman" : Soon after the release of her second album, Blonde, Béatrice Martin (aka Cœur de Pirate) tells us that she's going to be a mom very soon.

We know that for a while you stopped playing the piano. What made you want to play it again?

When it stopped being an obligation. My parents made me learn how to play the piano, when I really didn't want to! My head was always in the clouds, but when I played it, I had to concentrate. So eventually it became a chore, like going to school. So I lost the desire to play it. But after a while the desire to play came back because it was no longer forced on me. This helped me to deal with a lot of my emotions.

And are you still distracted?

Yes! Luckily, I can sing and play the piano at the same time. But apart from that, I'm incapable of doing two things at once!

Do you have a piano that you take with you everywhere you travel?

No, but at home I've got my parents'. They wanted to sell it, but I said "No! I'll find a apartment big enough to fit it in". The piano is 150 years old, and it's huge. When I'm on a tour though I take with me my keyboards.

You often say that you've got too much on your shoulders. When you were on the talk show "Tout le monde en parle" last November, even Michèle Richard adviced you to take a load off...

Ah! Michèle! That's what we call a generational clash! [laughs] We lived some beautiful moments of televsion!

A great moment of television, yes! [laughs] So does that mean that sometimes you impose too much on yourself?

Sometimes, yeah, but I tell myself that I didn't have much of a choice. There's a lot of people to meet and a lot of things to do. I can't afford to take a week off! After all, there's people that have been waiting for months to see me in concert.

The title of your last album, Blonde, refers to your relation with your public, too. Is it similar to that of a couple, sometimes wonderful, sometimes complicated? (OP's note: "blonde" in QC French means both "blonde" woman and "girlfriend" [even if the gf is not actually blonde])

Yes, it can be difficult just like it can be wonderful. It's a relationship filled with concessions and moments of happiness. Especially when I see my fans after a concert, or when I come across them on the street and they say I've changed their lives. It's a lot... but it gives me a lot of pleasure!

Do you find it difficult to open up in your songs or in interviews?

Actually, I think it's important for me to talk about my creative process. People should understand what I've gone through in order to relate to me better. Obviously not everyone has lived the things I've lived, but everyone has known deceptions and insecurities!

It is known that when someone travels as much as you do, love relationships aren't easy. Is this also true for friendships?

Yes, definitely! That being said, I think I'm lucky. I don't have a lot of friends, but the ones I've got truly understand me.

Did you fear losing friends or not being surrounded by good people when you started to become famous?

It's true that there were moments when I didn't know why some people talked to me. But that's ok, I've sorted it all out. I've got friends!

Your home is a little of Montréal, a little of Paris, a little of the airport...

The airport's not bad. In Montréal I have an apartement and everything. And I spend a lot of time in Paris because of my emotional life.

What do you love about Paris?

It's special. It can be nerve-wracking or it can be wonderful. Kinda like Montréal, incidentally. Some think it's Paradise on Earth. But I was born there [Montréal], so I see the city differently. Paris is like in the movies: just being out in it fills you with wonder. But there's also a lot of people; it's a bit aggravating.

If you could move anywhere tomorrow, where would you go?

Vancouver! If I could bring my boyfriend with me, that's where I'd go.

lolwat @ Elle telling us Béa is going to be a mom but it's not even mentioned in the interview? wtf? also i hope this doesn't delay her too much from releasing a third album. babies are a wonderful thing and all, but if I was hoping for new stuff by next year at the latest. ;-;

oh, and INB4 any "Who?" comments:

^ "I don't speak French!" ^ <--- that's what Google and LyricsTranslate is for!

if you love Adele and/or Lana del Rey, methinks you'll love Cœur de Pirate; their style isn't the same but there's similarities; I like all so I don't see why others wouldn't. :3
