So while the former tennis star will continue on as an official ambassador for Bonds,
Courtney is set to star in the new action film Terminator: Genesis, alongside the Arnold Schwarzenegger.
He said the rigorous training for the role helped his confidence in undressing for Bonds.
“It came about at a time when I was in the throes of having to get into shape for [The Terminator] film I’m working on — so the timing couldn’t have been more perfect for an underwear campaign, that’s for sure,” Courtney said, with a laugh.
“I guess that alleviated a little of the anxiety that would have come about with the nature of this kind of shoot. But I’m proud to be associated with the brand they’re obviously an iconic part of Australian history really”.
Courtney, who grew up in the Sydney suburb of Cherrybrook, has already worked alongside Tom Cruise in Jack Reacher, Bruce Willis in a reboot of the Die Hard franchise, not to mention scoring roles in Angelina Jolie’s Unbroken and Russell Crowe’s The Water Diviner.
It’s clear, though, Courtney’s appearance in Terminator: Genesis is his biggest chance yet to be a household name.
“I hope that’s the case,” he said. But Courtney said it’s the work, not the fame, which appeals to him. “I’m certainly not chasing celebrity, but I’m definitely chasing success,” he said.
He said the return of Schwarzenegger to Terminator: Genesis was a “coup” for the production.
“Look, it’s a little surreal,” Courtney said.
“And I think it’s pretty cool after everything he’s achieved, he’s coming back to do films again and having just as much fun with it.
