Chart Beat Meet & Greet with The Wanted

Billboard caught up with on-fire U.K. boy band the Wanted Friday (March 23) at the iHeartRadio Theater presented by P.C. Richard and Son in New York City. The group performed a show that night that was additionally streamed live for fans on z100radio.com.

The London-based act – Max George, Siva Kaneswaran, Jay McGuiness, Tom Parker and Nathan Syke – which just happens to grace one of two covers of the latest issue of Billboard; fellow boy band One Direction appears on the other – chatted about the latest British invasion, its debut smash “Glad You Came” and its reaction to its chart success.

“The boom that’s happening at the moment, everyone’s calling the British Invasion. We’re happy to be a part of it (with) One Direction,” the group says. “It’s good for British music.”

The Wanted says that while it’s continuing the tradition of boy bands that dates to the Beatles almost 50 years ago through fellow U.K. act Take That in the ’90s, it has its own identity.

“Back in the ’90s, there was a certain type of boy band. There were dancing boy bands back then … ‘N Sync, Take That. Obviously, we’re much better dancers than any of them,” the group said with a laugh.

“Glad” currently ranks at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100.

“It’s an absolute honor,” the act says. “We can only dream about getting to No. 1.”

During the Wanted’s show, its label, Island Def Jam, surprised the group on-stage with an RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) certified-platinum plaque for “Glad.” David Massey, president of Mercury Records (a division of IDJ), presented the keepsake to commemorate the single having passed a million in digital sales. “This is the first of many congratulations, boys,” Massey said as he presented the award. The act releases its debut U.S. EP, “Gold Forever,” on April 24.

“People dream of stuff like that,” the Wanted told Billboard of its budding stateside success. “We never thought we’d get the opportunity to even come over here and have a chance to let people hear our music.

“Thankfully, they like it.”
