Feistodon Cometh! Hear Feist and Mastodon Cover Each Other

by Marc Hogan

Feistodon is here, and as you might have guessed, it's a beast. Feist and Mastodon's covers of each others' songs, available as a 7" single for Record Store Day this Saturday (and featuring some thoroughly badass cover art), have surfaced online, via Listen Before You Buy. Who'da thunk: The Canadian singer-songwriter makes aggressive The Hunter pummeler "Black Tongue" her breezy, bouncy own, albeit with more than her usual grit, while the Atlanta metalheads do similarly with Feist's off-kilterer-than-usual Metals (hey!) racket-maker "A Commotion," seizing on the song's insistent pulse and throttling it half out of its mind. "The grudge has still got your heart," the prehistoric fellas repeat, maybe a touch more sweetly than usual. Match made.

Frank Ocean - Thinking About You

Frank Ocean's slow-motion song of devotion “Thinking About You” has a complex history. First written for R&B vocalist Bridgett Kelly, Ocean's version was originally leaked last year only to be leaked again as up updated re-mastered this version this March. Now, we finally have an official video for the song the to be the lead single off Ocean's next LP.

Directed by Tumblr natives the High 5 Collective, the vid sets Ocean's doe-eyed crooning against something of an inter-dimensional love story, that or a dreamcatcher-inspired fever dream. Either way, pioneer triage and white-eyed shaman were not what we we're expecting, but we couldn't be more pleasantly surprised. source 1 2

Interview + new still from THE APPARITION [in theaters August 24th]

MTV News: What's it like to be on the other side of the haunting in "The Apparition," as opposed to playing the vampire?

Ashley Greene: I didn't think of it like that, but you're right! [My character] Kelly is very ... human. Death is knocking at her door, and she is fighting for her survival. It was a different experience than playing an — almost — indestructible character like Alice Cullen. I had to take on a lot more loss, betrayal and vulnerability when playing Kelly.

MTV News: Is there CGI work involved with the spirit?

Greene: I don't want to give too much away, but I will say the visuals are very compelling. Also, it's important to note that this film is a supernatural thriller that really keeps you guessing. The fear is built through suspense and fear of the unknown, rather than the blood or gore of a horror film.

MTV News: Have you ever felt like you had a supernatural experience?

Greene: Supposedly, my building in L.A. is haunted. One time, my dogs woke me up, barking, and my front door was open. I had set my alarm before I went to sleep that night, and it hadn't gone off! That was scary.

Behind the scenes of a new Mark. Photoshoot:

Ashley Greene believes wearing make-up constantly can be ''dangerous'' for your self-esteem:

If you were Ashley Greene, with paparazzi constantly skulking about, you might not go out without your makeup on. But the "Twilight" star and face of mark Cosmetics is actually very vocal about not becoming too dependent on it. She often forces herself to go bare-faced, just to ensure she doesn't become too emotionally dependent on beauty products.

She explained: ''I think it's dangerous to get too comfortable with needing makeup. You kind of lose yourself, and you don't think you're pretty enough without it. It creates this whole downward spiral.''

"it's sad because I get all this beautiful makeup done," she acknowledged, "but I'm like, 'I've got to go wash my face.'"

Green has famously posed in the past in nothing but body paint. How did she get so comfortable in her own skin?

"I don't know that I've ever met someone who hasn't had some type of insecure moment or stage. You're growing and you're learning, and some days are good and some are bad. I'm definitely the most comfortable in my skin than I've ever been. I understand that a lot of things aren't the end of the world. There were certain things I was very insecure about, but I'm constantly going out there trying to make girls feel they are special, and I think it rubs off on me. And my mom said she loved her 30s. She was most comfortable in her 30s. So I'm looking forward to that."

What You Didn't See On The Voice (4/17)

$
0
0

Some of the most interesting things on reality shows happen when the cameras aren't running.

Here's the best of what you didn't see on "The Voice" on Tuesday (April 17).
The writer only had 4 things. I'll add some more since I was also in the studio audience!

I also bolded for the TL;DR crowd.

OMG Part 1 - When The Wanted took the stage, it was pandemonium. Max, Siva, Jay, Tom and Nathan set the place on fire when they played "Chasing The Sun." OK, maybe it wasn't on fire, but it was awfully hot as they had to turn off the A/C in order for all the pyrotechnics and other special effects to work.
There were a lot of Wanted fans in the house, including myself. I actually sat near the house band where the pyro blew up. We had to endure that twice since The Wanted's performance was pre-taped 30 mins before the show. We were completely cooled down by the AC beforehand, but when the pyro blew up it completely put us off guard and we were suddenly drenched in sweat. Hilarrrious.

The Wanted also gave kisses and hugs to fans in the pit before they did the second take of the performance, which was the one that aired. They never really went to my side, but at one point, one of the guys (Tom) turned his head toward my seating section and smiled at me while I cheered them on. I completely died.

But oh yeah, that was an awesome performance, both times!
If you didn't catch it, go back to this post.

OMG Part 2 - If The Wanted wasn't enough to make a teenage girl's heart flutter, it got even better when Justin Bieber came to promote his new album and play a clip from the video for "Boyfriend." When he left the stage The Coiffed One even gave a female fan a kiss on the cheek. When asked later what she thought of the moment, she says "I'm making Selena [Gomez] jealous."
MY POOR EARS! Right before Lindsey from Team Christina left the stage, a skinny boy thing stood backstage on my left. People in the pit in front of me looked over and I couldn't recognize him at first. Then I realized it was Bieber. But as soon as he walked out, the studio went craaaaaaaaazzzyyy. Adam Levine and Cee Lo Green had to cover their ears. Priceless!

OMG Part 3 - After Bieber announced that his new album is coming out June 19 and that he's also coming back to perform at "The Voice" finale, he quickly left. Was there something wrong? Hardly. He had to scurry off to meet up with his girlfriend Selena Gomez at the Lakers game. It is here that the two ended up on the famed "Kiss Cam" and obliged. Looks like Gomez got her man after all.
I actually did not see the look Christina made after Justin greeted her before he left. It may have looked like a snub from a simple video clip, but when I rewatched the whole episode, it was clear she was honestly sad that in a few moments she had to let go of one of the members of her team. The coaches really genuinely care for their team.

When she got up on stage to hug the person she let go, Ashley, she kind of pulled down the skirt of her dress as if it didn't really fit her. But she's not fat at all; she's just curvy.

Also with Blake, he was totally indecisive. I felt for him; Raelynn was obviously his favorite, but Erin was definitely the better performer.

OMG Part 4 - After running the uncensored version Cee Lo's famed song "F*** You" during audience warm up last week, producers must have decided to make things more family friendly. So they swapped it out with the decidedly G-rated "Forget You."
They played upbeat songs prior to show time, which was really cool. It kept us up on our feet especially after waiting for so long just to get in the studio.

OMG Part 5 (keeping the OMG list alive) - When the coaches were introduced at the very beginning, Adam came in first, followed by Blake. Adam was playful so he jumped on Blake's back. That was the only time they interacted with each other, sadly. :( Cee Lo came next with his sparkly red jacket and lastly, Christina. When Christina came in, Blake took her hand and helped her to her chair. What a gentleman.

OMG Part 6 - During the first commercial break, while the other coaches get touched up due to the heat over their section, Adam got up to greet some fans in the pit near him. A fan pulled out a paper and I saw him ask her if she had a pen, but she didn't. So Adam, the cool guy that he is, went to one of the pages to get a pen and started signing autographs for the fans in the pit.

OMG Part 7 - Blake and Cee Lo never really left their chairs. Cee Lo was constantly checking on his phone, and at some point during the last commercial break, all coaches were checking their phones. I saw Christina had hers right next to her on her chair.

OMG Part 8 - Carson never interacts with the crowd. I was especially sad about this because he was one of the reasons why I went to this show (TRL legend, hello). He's the complete opposite of what he used to be during the TRL days. Every commercial break he’d walk off backstage or something and then some seconds before coming back live, he’d go over what to say on the teleprompter. I feel like he needs to loosen up some more.

Wiretap's Jonathan Goldstein reveals David Bowie obsession

Jonathan Goldstein is the writer, host and co-producer (along with Mira Burt-Wintonick and Cristal Duhaime) of Wiretap a show the Toronto Star descrbed as "[pitting] the absurd against the plausible. The sense is of a world not completely unlike our own that runs parallel... conversation, storytelling and introspection, culled from equal parts real-world experience and the warp of Goldstein's imagination."

I asked Jonathan if he would divulge 10 of the most influential songs of his youth. In this musical version of high school confidential, Jonathan’s answers were surprisingly honest, revealing and funny.

‘When I was a teenager, I was obsessed with David Bowie in a way that I don't think I've ever come close to feeling about anything or anyone before or since. Every inch of my bedroom walls was covered with posters. I owned German bootlegs, biographies, and a had a dozen T-shirts. I even forced myself to sit through Labyrinth , a film where Bowie had hair like one of the girl's from Bananarama and starred opposite puppets. (HOW. FUCKING. DARE. YOU. THROWING. SHADE. AT. LABYRINTH YOU MOTHERFUCKER?)

To this day, when my father sees David Bowie on Entertainment Tonight, he'll call up and say, "Turn to channel 12. Your buddy's on TV." I always know who he's talking about. My feelings weren't anything my father could understand, and frankly, to this day, I don't know if it was anything I understand. But whenever I hear certain Bowie songs, I'm transported back to my teenage bedroom. It's pretty powerful.

Here, in no particular order, are my top ten favourite Bowie songs from those years:

Life on Mars:

Such a beautiful song. Felt like Bowie was gazing down on all the problems of mankind while seated in the clouds, sipping champagne in a mink coat and feeling bad for all the suffering. But not too bad.

Five Years:

When I figured out how to overdub sound onto video cassettes, I created my own video for this song by overlaying it onto a clip of Mr. Rogers making a sandwich on his show. I even managed to convince my friend Lenny that it really was a David Bowie video and that Mr. Rogers was originally a Bowie persona.

Lady Stardust:

I was really into Billie Holiday, too, and I'd listen to it pretending it was his homage to her. But really, it was an homage to himself.

Changes:

Probably one of my favourite songs of all. I remember when I heard the live version where Bowie changed "These children that you spit on" to "these children that you shit on" I was so shocked, I kept rewinding it over and over.

Sorrow:

Always wanted to use Bowie's cover for the beginning of a movie: The credits start to roll, and the song starts to play. Close up on the protagonist (me, of course), eating a poutine in the driver's seat of a car pulled over at the side of the road in the middle of the night.

Diamond Dogs:

Obsessed with the album cover. I'd stare at it, a painting of Bowie with the body of a dog, and spend hours wondering what it would feel like to be half Bowie, half dog? Would I like dog food? Or Quaaludes?

Be My Wife:

I would lie in bed listening to this song on my 15-pound Walkman, imagining playing the song on a piano to my fiancee. I recently learned that Bowie recorded this whole album while living on heroine and milk. I think he weighed about five pounds.

Up The Hill Backwards:

Never had any idea what this song was about, but it always felt like the perfect storm of pop candy and noise.

Modern Love:

From the Serious Moonlight tour era. Very big impact on me, fashion-wise. Even went through an unfortunate period where I started wearing suspenders and a belt at the same time. You'd think it'd ensure my never getting panted. It didn't.

Heroes:

If I could have any song be the theme song to my radio show, it'd be this. The word "heroes" starts off sounding ironic, but ends up sounding so sincere it's heart-breaking.

Five Articles (ONTD included) Implying Blake Shelton Caused Adam Levine's Break-Up

$
0
0

Have you guys heard the news? Adam Levine, Maroon 5 frontman and Voice supercoach, is currently in the midst of a long road trip to Splitsville with supermodel girlfriend Anne V(yalitsyna), the two officially announcing their breakup this afternoon. “Adam and I have decided to separate in an amicable and supportive manner,” Ms. V diplomatically offered via statement to People Magazine. “We still love and respect each other as friends. I wish him all the best.” Levine has not yet offered comment, and the reasons behind (and perpetrator of) the breakup remain unknown.
Of course, that has not kept The Internet from speculating, and the consensus opinion has examined the evidence named a likely culprit in the power couple’s dissolution: Voice host and noted homewrecker Blake Shelton. The country star’s bromance—and yes, it’s so like that that we have to actually use That Word to describe it—with NBC co-star Adam Levine has been well-documented, to say the least, so now that Levine’s personal life has gone awry, all eyes are pointed in his direction. To wit, here’s five articles on the situation that implicitly or explicitly finger Blake for the breakup:

MTV. “We hope Levine isn’t suffering from too much heartbreak. Though if he is, he can always turn to fellow “Voice” judge Blake Shelton for a shoulder to cry on. Shelton has joked about their friendship in the past, going as far as to admit wanting to kiss Levine. “

Examiner. “Of course, this [breakup] now leaves Levine available for his bromance with Blake Shelton, immortalized on the cover of and in the current issue of People. Coincidence? You decide.”

Oh No They Didn’t!. “‘Adam and I have decided to separate in an amicable and supportive manner. We still love and respect each other as friends. I wish him all the best,’ Vyalitsyna said in a statement. Hmmm….I think a certain somebody came between them.“

DListed. “Even though Anne V is the epitome of grace and demureness (Exhibit: EVERYTHING), she can not compete with the true holder of Adam Levine’s heart: Oh yes, that’s Blake Shelton saying ‘He doesn’t pull out with me, hunty!’ with his eyes and pucker. So try not to fall over in shock when Blake eventually announces he’s quitting his wife Miranda Lambert. Although, Blake should divorce Miranda for the sole fact that she has huge chunky lowlights in her hair and the year is not 2001.”

WetPaint. “This comes right after Adam and Blake Shelton’s People Magazine cover issue (April 2, 2012) in which the singers joke about how Anne V and Blake’s wife Miranda Lambert are ‘hot for each other.’ No news yet on Adam’s reaction or who broke up with whom.”
The last one is particularly interesting, as it implies not only that Blake might have broken up Adam and Anne V, but that Miranda might want in on Anne V in the ensuing romantic free-for-all. Would this be the craziest romantic partner swap since those two Yankees traded families back in the day? Yes. Yes it would. Fingers crossed!

Thursday TV Ratings: Vampire Diaries and Secret Circle Hit Lows, Grey's and Scandal Rise

$

0

Both The CW’s The Vampire Diaries — despite letting loose with a real crowd-pleaser — and bubble show The Secret Circle dropped significantly this Thursday night upon returning from three-week breaks.

TVD, with 2.18 million total viewers and a season-low 1.0 demo rating, was down 20 and 23 percent, respectively, while its companion show fell 36 and 29 percent to series lows of 1.11 mil and 0.5.

The night’s only demo gainers, meanwhile, were 30 Rock (3.2 mil/1.5, up 6 percent), Grey’s Anatomy (rising 10 percent to 10-week highs of 9.7 mil and 3.2) and Scandal (7.35 mil/2.1), which inched up for a second straight week since its debut.

Elsewhere on the night…

8 pm | American Idol led Thursday with 14.6 million total viewers and a 3.9 rating, down 8 percent week-to-week. Placing third behind a Big Bang repeat and Rules of Engagement, Missing (7.1 mil/1.3) slipped 11 and 7 percent. Community (2.9 mil/1.3) dipped a tenth in the demo.

9 pm | Touch (7.35 mil/2.1) was down 9 percent. The Office held steady at 4.3 mil/2.2, while Parks and Recreation (3.53 mil/1.8) returned from hiatus matching its most recent tallies, and improving on Up All Night‘s finale by 37 and 50 percent. Parks also demonstrated 82 percent demo retention out of The Office, versus the 69 percent it averaged in the 9:30 spot last season.

10 pm | Awake (2.74 mil/0.8) added a handful of viewers but dipped another tenth in the demo.

Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift's Duet Sounds "Beautiful"

Wondering what the highly anticipated Justin Bieber track featuring Taylor Swift might sound like? Well, Bieber's girlfriend, Selena Gomez, has heard it and she gives it two thumbs up.

"It's beautiful," she told E! News about the collaboration for Bieber's June release, Believe. "I don't know if it's going to make it on the record, but it is beautiful."

Whether or not it makes the cut, Swift is only one of many artists — including Maroon 5 lead singer Adam Levine and Bieber's pals Kanye West and Drake — who have hit the studio with the Biebs. As for working together, neither Selena nor Justin have mentioned a duet for his album.

"You know, the whole album is just so different, there's so many different people collaborating," he recently explained about the album. "It's crazy. I mean I even wrote a song with Taylor Swift, so the whole album ranges differently. With my music, it doesn't only stay in a box. It's so out there. Everything is so different and that's why I'm so happy with this album." Bieber will drop Believe on June 19. Before then, fans are eagerly awaiting the release of his "Boyfriend" music video, for which he has released several teases over the last few weeks.

"The concept of this video, I mean, it's not like a steady concept," he explained to MTV News about the Colin Tilley-directed clip. "It's not like 'Justin follows this girl to this spot.' No, it's a bunch of amazing scenes: Like a fire scene, we have an ice scene. "It's kind of like bouncing back and forth," he said. "And then there's scenes of me and just a bunch of girl dancers, and just some great shots, great artistic shots, great shots of me smiling. It's fun."

cant wait for june 19th!!!!! believe will have so much swaggie

Taylor Swift is circling the role of Joni Mitchell in Sony Pictures and Di Bonaventura Pictures' adaptation of Sheila Weller's book "Girls Like Us," which would mark the pop star's first turn in a bigscreen drama.

Pic examines the careers of singers Mitchell, Carly Simon and Carole King. Swift does not have an official offer, but has been linked to the Mitchell role for several months as other actresses have auditioned to play Simon and King, including Alison Pill ("Midnight in Paris") for the latter singer.

"House" exec producer Katie Jacobs, who optioned the book several years ago, is directing from a script by John Sayles. Lorenzo di Bonaventura ("Transformers") is set to produce the Sony pic, which has not yet been greenlit, though it is tentatively skedded to start production later this year when the three leads' schedules allow for filming.

Swift, who's currently featured on "The Hunger Games" soundtrack, made her feature acting debut in ensemble rom-com "Valentine's Day," and recently voiced a role in Universal's "The Lorax." Before that, she appeared as herself in the 2009 Miley Cyrus vehicle "Hannah Montana: The Movie."

Urban Outfitters hits a new low

The Anti-Defamation League in Philadelphia publicly objected Thursday to a T-shirt being sold by Urban Outfitters Inc. that bears a symbol that critics said resembles a Star of David patch that Jews in Nazi Europe were forced to wear during the Holocaust, sometimes on concentration camp uniforms.

“We find this use of symbolism to be extremely distasteful and offensive, and we are outraged that your company would make this product available to your customers,” Barry Morrison, regional director of the ADL, wrote in a letter e-mailed to Richard A. Hayne, chairman and chief executive of the retail corporation headquartered at the Philadelphia Navy Yard. ADL shared the letter with the media.

A phone call to Urban Outfitters spokesman Ed Looram was not immediately returned.

The shirt was brought to the ADL’s attention earlier in the day by an affiliate in Chicago, Morrison said. The $100 Kellog Tee — a yellow cotton shirt from the Denmark-based Wood Wood label — features a six-pointed blue patch embroidered to a chest pocket. It was available on the company’s website as of Thursday afternoon.

Although Selena Gomez and boyfriend Justin Bieber puckered up when they were caught on the Kiss Cam at the Lakers game earlier this week, the 19-year-old singer wasn’t thrilled about it. During an interview with Ryan Seacrest, the “Love You Like a Love Song” singer admits she was really embarrassed by the whole incident.

“That was probably the most humiliating thing that’s ever happened to me,” during her interview on the KIIS-FM show. “All of a sudden we’re both looking up and we come on [the screen] and it’s like… it was so awkward. It was so weird. I mean you have to kiss, right?”

Sitting court side, SelGo and Biebs, 18, were seen stealing a few kisses as they watched the San Antonio Spurs beat the Lakers 112 to 91. Aww!
