ONTD Fave Cara Delevingne Is Set To Make More Than £9 Million

$

She is the model of the moment, ‘the coolest girl in England’ – as underlined by 6.2 million Instagram followers who monitor every pout.

But behind those famous eyebrows, Cara Delevingne is also a highly successful businesswoman who, according to new figures from Forbes wealth analysis, has made at least £2.1 million in the past year.

Not bad for a 22-year-old.

But this is only the beginning: with the help of Sarah Doukas, co-founder of agency Storm who also discovered Kate Moss, Cara is heading for the financial stratosphere.

For the approaching season she stars in six major advertising campaigns – including last week’s daring naked portrait, right, to advertise Tom Ford’s Black Orchid perfume.
And she has her fingers in still more lucrative pies.

Earlier this month, she celebrated the launch of her Mulberry handbag.
She is taking on Hollywood with roles in at least two movies.
And with appearance fees and licensing deals, Cara is well on her way to a huge fortune.
This coming year alone, industry insiders calculate she will earn more than £9 million, quite aside from her inherited wealth.

Here, after delving into the inner workings of the Delevingne machine, we reveal just how the model has struck gold.

MODELLING: She's haut to trot!
ESTIMATED EARNINGS: £2m

Last year, Vogue hailed Cara as the ‘star face’ of the season.
She has walked for some of the world’s top designers including Marc Jacobs, Matthew Williamson, Mulberry and Burberry.
For the Autumn/Winter 2013 season she strutted her stuff at an exhausting 41 shows.

According to a fashion insider, unknown models earn from £1,000 per show but a model of Cara’s calibre could make as much as £50,000 to walk for a luxury label.
The source said: ‘In Paris, the budgets are higher and starting fees can be around £10,000.
I wouldn’t be surprised if she earned upwards of £50,000 for Chanel. Whenever Cara models in a show she either opens or closes it, or both. Girls who open or close shows get paid more.’
Anusha Couttigane, fashion consultant for retail analysts Conlumino, added: ‘Modelling at the top for Burberry and H&M can attract fees of up to £500,000.
‘Miranda Kerr’s contract for Victoria’s Secret was worth around $1 million [roughly £600,000] over three years.’

CAMPAIGNING: Readies to wear
ESTIMATED EARNINGS: £4m+

Her first shoot was as a goofy ten-year-old for Italian Vogue, with mother Pandora.
But next season Cara will appear in major campaigns for Mulberry, Chanel, Burberry, Topshop and Balmain.
One fashion editor said: ‘In the days of Naomi Campbell and Linda Evangelista, models got paid a lot more for walking. Now the big money comes from being the face of a brand.
'The biggest deals command fees of up to £5 million for three years.’
Cara still gets out of bed for the smaller brands – earning £20,000 a day working for the Next directory.

SIGNING: Licensed to sell, sell, sell
ESTIMATED EARNINGS: £100k

In 2012, Cara registered her name as a trademark.
This enables her to produce and endorse a variety of products guaranteed to sell millions.
The earning potential of, say, a Cara eyebrow kit, is hard to quantify but the highest paid endorsement to date lies with Beyoncé who secured a staggering $50 million deal with Pepsi.
Trademark lawyer Tahir Basheer said endorsements and licensing deals were two of the ‘most lucrative areas for a celebrity with a brand attached to them’.

DESIGNING: The ultimate bag lady
ESTIMATED EARNINGS: £2.4m

Following British model Alexa Chung’s lead, Cara has collaborated with Mulberry on her own range of handbags.
A fashion insider said the British brand could have paid Cara about £100,000 but also revealed that she could be getting about 15 per cent of gross sales.
‘Rosie Huntington-Whiteley was paid a base rate for her collaboration with Marks & Spencer but on top of that earned five per cent of all garment sales, and it’s likely that Cara will do the same with her Mulberry bags,’ the insider said.

Mulberry sold 380 Alexa bags at £750 each in one week shortly after their release in 2009.
Should Cara’s £995 bags – that can also be worn as backpacks – prove to be as successful, industry experts estimate she could earn up to £2.2 million in the next year.
In addition, Cara has collaborated with US label DKNY to produce a 15-piece capsule collection, out in November. Experts suggest she could have been paid an estimated £90,000 for the line.

ACTING: Walking and talking at the same time!
ESTIMATED EARNINGS: £650k

It's no secret that Cara would rather grace the silver screen than the catwalk and over the past year she has made serious in-roads into Hollywood.
Her first appearance was in Anna Karenina in 2012.
She is currently playing a mermaid in Pan, a Hollywood adaptation of the Peter Pan story, with Hugh Jackman and Amanda Seyfried, and has just finished filming Tulip Fever with Prince Harry’s ex-girlfriend Cressida Bonas and Oscar-winner Judi Dench, and Kids In Love with Bafta winner Will Poulter.

A Hollywood source said Cara may have been paid around £50,000 for her role in Pan.
‘She might be big in fashion but not in the movie world,’ the source said.
Until she’s a proven box office draw the studio is not going to pay her much at all.
'In marketing terms the studios are being very smart, thinking she’ll tweet and Instagram all her followers. The studio is getting more than she is.’

INHERITING: From the bank of mum and dad
ESTIMATED EARNINGS: £30m

Cara was educated at £32,000-a-year Bedales school in Hampshire.
She lives at the Belgravia home of her parents but has been househunting in Notting Hill.
Her Godmother is Joan Collins.
Cara’s father Charles, a former ‘Debs’ delight’ has a property company, Harvey White Properties, worth about £30 million.
Accounts reveal that Cara and her sisters Chloe and Poppy own a small number of shares in the business.
Cara’s mother Pandora, a former society beauty and Tatler writer, is a personal shopper.

APPEARING: Just turn up and cash in...
ESTIMATED EARNINGS: £100k

Cara can make a small fortune just by turning up to be seen at events and launches.
According to one source, singer Katy Perry is rumoured to rake in £50,000 just for sitting on the front row at fashion shows.
The source said: ‘The celebs sitting front row are often getting more than the models.’

During the past year, Cara has made a number of paid appearances at events around the world. One industry insider claims she could earn about £20,000 for every event she attends.
Celebrity agent Jonathan Shalit believes this is just the start of her earning potential.
‘An Arab sheik opening a nightclub in Dubai might pay up to £100,000 for a celebrity to attend,’ he said.
‘It’s a massive business. Paris Hilton got $1.5 million for DJ-ing in Europe and Kanye West got $3 million for playing at the wedding of the grandson of the Kazakhstan president.
‘Cara is someone everyone wants. She is the coolest girl in England right now. I think she could get anything up to £50,000 for an appearance and that would be just for an hour’s work.’

Grimes Declines Ice Bucket Challenge Over ALS Association's Animal Testing Policy

Dozens of musicians have accepted the widely popular ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, which aims to raise funds and awareness for Lou Gehrig's disease. But Grimes has politely rejected her nomination by Richie Hawtin because of the ALS Association’s involvement with animal testing.

In an Aug. 23 post on her Tumblr, Grimes (real name: Claire Boucher) says he doesn’t “feel great about wasting water in this California drought” and that she won’t donate money to the ALS Association“because of their record of testing on animals.”

The ALS Association reportedly acknowledged that it uses rodents, flies and worms“to better understand disease mechanisms and to develop therapies” after Pamela Anderson took to social media to criticize the Ice Bucket Challenge campaign.

Grimes did say, however, that she would donate money to the Malala Fund, “because education is the key to ending almost every issue that faces humanity and our world today.” She also called out Detroit Madness, Hana Pestle and Blood Diamonds.

Read Grimes’ full statement below:

“Haha okay, richie is probably the nicest and coolest person I’ve ever met so i can’t really refuse him. however, I would like to say that I don’t feel great about wasting water in this california drought, but i will donate money. However I will not donate money to this foundation because of their record of testing on animals, but I will donate money to the Malala fund because education is the key to ending almost every issue that faces humanity and our world today. yep yep! do i have to make a video to nominate other people? if so I’ll do that later, but in the mean time Im calling out Detroit madness, Hana pestle and Blood diamonds.”

Jensen Ackles Gets Twitter

Normally it might not be news when a celebrity puts themselves on Twitter, but when it comes to the last big Supernatural holdout, in a world where Jared Padalecki, Misha Collins, and Jim Beaver already have huge feeds, it's a big deal when Jensen Ackles finally gets onto that social media experience.

Ackles, whose other credits include Smallville and Dawson's Creek, finally bit the bullet and started a feed today (August 24), tying in with the Supernatural convention currently happening in Vancouver. Already within the first hour, Ackles has over 100,000 followers.

Here's Jensen's first tweet, which has already been shared around 20,000 times and favorited nearly 25,000:

Zap2it Interviews Deborah Ann Woll about the True Blood Finale

Jessica's story will 'end with Bill,'

1

"True Blood" will air its final episode on Aug. 24, bring to a close the story of Sookie, Bill, Eric, Jessica and the rest of the Bon Temps gang after seven seasons.
In the series' penultimate episode, Jessica Hamby was reunited with her true love Hoyt Fortenberry, seemingly resolving her romantic story after relationships with Jason Stackhouse and James. Zap2it spoke with Deborah Ann Woll about whether or not Jessica and Hoyt are soulmates, who the most important man in Jessica's life is and the difficulties she is having adjusting to her role as Karen on Marvel and Netflix's "Daredevil" series.
Zap2it:Were you surprised that it ended up being Jessica and Hoyt who were soulmates -- or as close to soulmates as can exist on "True Blood"?
Deborah Ann Woll: Yeah, I was surprised. I had sort of been going down another track in terms of my thoughts about the character and where we were headed, and so it took me a bit by surprise too. But I also had a little bit of earlier notice. The showrunner [Brian Buckner] had spoken to me about his thoughts about doing that, but I didn't know how it would happen. In true "True Blood" fashion, it happened very quickly. I was definitely surprised.I don't know if I would say "soulmates." I think Jessica's had a lot of contenders. That was what was fun about it, that kind of kept us guessing, is that there were a lot people she could have been with.
At what point in production did you know this was the direction Jessica was heading in?
I knew generally the direction they wanted to take before we started shooting -- generally that he was coming back and there was romance involved. What I didn't know was sort of what form that would take; whether it was going to be a love triangle or whether that was end game or what.
It was a bit of a red herring too that Jason and Jessica had another hookup before the end. Was that important fan service to get in there before she ended up with Hoyt?
I think it's important to show how much Jessica and Jason mean to one another. The scene in the car in episode 8between Jessica and Jason is one of my favorites. I think that in another world, in another story, that could have worked. I think that they are really good for each other and I think that they love each other and I think they're good friends. Just because of the story and the way that things went down, she ended up with Hoyt, but I think that it was important to show we all have a huge capacity for love, and I don't think there's anything wrong with feeling love for many, many people. I think she loves Bill, I think she loves Andy and Adilyn, I think she loves Sookie, and I think she loves Jason, and I think she loves Hoyt. The way things happened and at this point in her life, Hoyt is the person that she wanted to be with.
Do you think Jessica, Jason and Hoyt have matured enough in the past few seasons that they can all be friends now that Jessica and Hoyt are back together?
I think that Jessica and Jason mean enough to each other that they will be friends for a long time. I think that that's something that always underlaid that relationship. Part of what I really loved about it is that they were always so respectful of one another -- for the most part, other than a few disagreements. I love that Jessica never rolled her eyes at Jason when he said silly things, and he never judged her for her impulses. I think that's a really great friendship, and I think that they will be able to make it.
Jessica really has evolved so much as a character since Season 1. What have been some elements that you've enjoyed most about that journey?
Jessica's is a coming-of-age story, and in any good coming-of-age story, the person has to learn how to be independent, how to take care of themselves. I think from where she's started, which was living with very domineering parents who didn't really want her to be an individual, she had to go through all the growing pains that come with that in terms of trying out every extreme of yourself, pushing to see where your strengths are and where your vulnerabilities are.
By the end, and I think it's illustrated best in her relationship with Bill, she needed a strong father figure and she had that in Bill over the last six, seven years. Now that he's leaving -- and there's more growing to do, certainly, in the last episode, and we'll see how that relationship pans out -- but she asked to be released in [episode] 9, and I think there's something in that that says, "I am a grown woman. I'm capable of taking care of myself. I need you to recognize that, and recognize my independence."
If Bill does end up dying the true death, how will she be able to move on from that?
Bill is the most person in Jessica's story. We can talk about the boyfriends as much as we want, but as far as I'm concerned, the story started with Bill and it will always end with Bill. At least this story of "True Blood" for Jessica will end with her relationship with Bill, and for me that's the through-line for her, especially considering the troubles that she has with her real father. I think this was the story about the two of them growing together and learning from each other. The releasing thing is interesting, because there's a lot of different reasons why she could do it. She could do it to hurt him, which was part of it. She could do it to assert her independence, which I think was part of it.
But I also think it's a little bit of fear. He chose to go through something that's going to be very painful for everyone around him, including himself. I don't know that Jessica wants to have to experience that. I think that's a very human and universal feeling. When someone you care about and love so deeply is going to be in pain, I think we get scared and we want to push it away. In that moment, she was so hurt and just thinking, "I can't sit and watch him turn black and blue and bleed and die. I just can't do it, and I need to be divorced from that." Without giving too much away, that's something that Jessica's going to have to confront in the finale in terms of how she's going to either choose or not to reconcile with Bill based on what he choses to do with his time.
Do you think -- as Deborah, not as Jessica -- that Bill made the right decision, as of episode 9? He has room to change his mind yet.
He has room to change his mind. I would point out to people that we spent a lot of time this season looking at Bill's human life. There's a reason for that. I think there's a strong reason for why we've seen how much he loved his human family, how much he missed of them. If you think back to Lorena, she basically made him give them up. He lost so much when he became a vampire, and I think that's why we've seen him struggle so much with being one. I think Jessica is a part of his salvation in that a little bit. I think he loves her very dearly, and it was his chance to have a family in the way that he misses them, but I can understand Bill not really wanting to continue this -- just for his own personal reasons, beyond the idea that maybe he's causing Sookie or Jessica or people pain. There's maybe more peace for him in death than there is in continuing to be a vampire, perhaps.
Over the years, there's always been talk of whether Sookie would become a vampire. Do you think that would be a satisfying conclusion if she was turned so she and Bill can be together, or would that sort of miss the point?
I would probably lean more toward missing the point. First of all, Sookie's already special. She's a faerie, which makes her special, but she's also special because she's a strong, amazing character. I'm really proud, actually, to be on a show that's lead by a woman. I think that's super cool and kind of rare. Sookie doesn't have to "end up" with Bill in order to have a finale, you know? I think she's special all on her own, and she doesn't have to be a vampire to evolve.
Do you think there are happy endings for some or all of these characters?
Happiness is variable. Life is life, and it has happy moments and it has challenging moments. Even if the show leaves some of our characters in a happy moment, we know that there will be challenges ahead. And if it leaves some characters in a challenging moment, we know that there will be happiness ahead. I would hope that no matter how the show ends, the fans keep these characters lives going in their minds and in their imaginations. I lived with Jessica for six, almost seven years. I have hopes and dreams for her that are as strong as my hopes and dreams are for myself. I absolutely have ideas of what happens to her after the last minute of the last episode.
Can you share one that's not super spoilery?
I absolutely cannot think of a way to do it without spoiling. [ laughs] I do imagine her becoming a maker one day. Or it could be human children, perhaps. I see Jessica as being extremely compassionate and a care-giver. I would hope one someday that she would have someone to teach all the lessons to that she's learned.
After filming the final episode, how did you respond?
We were all a little sad. This is a family of actors and crew but also a family of characters. Specifically on the actor point of view, I'll miss the characters. I'll never see Bill Compton again. Obviously we'll hang out every once in a while and we'll keep in touch, but I won't ever see Bill, and a piece of that is really saddening to me. As the scripts started to wind down and we started to see, "Oh, this is the last scene for these characters together" or "This is the last time I'll do my fang-out" -- things that are really only going to happen on this show -- and we watched them count down to done, that was hard.
You've now spent seven years with Jessica on "True Blood." Now that you're moving forward onto projects like "Daredevil," has playing Jessica changed what you're looking for in future roles in terms of something you'd like to try again or maybe do that's different?
Huh. Well, I'm already starting to notice huge differences between the two characters [in "True Blood" and "Daredevil"]. That's already kind of exciting to play. I can feel myself go, "Oh, if this was Jessica she would do this," but wanting to kind of steer differently than that. It's always going to be me in some way. I think, as an actor, that's part of it. You have to bring some of yourself to it, and that's why you have to revisit roles over and over again, so you can see different people bring themselves to the part. So it's always going to feel a little bit similar because it will always be a piece of me, but I can choose to respond differently or play things closer to the chest. It's been a really interest experience, actually, stepping outside of Jessica. It feels sort of weird. Jessica was like an old pair of jeans. I knew every rip, every stretched out spot. It just fit me just right after so many years. Karen, it's going to take a little bit of time, but I'm starting to figure out how to I fit into those clothes.
You know what's funny, after a few years of working on one character, it was so easy to feel for [Jessica]. By Season 3, I could cry for Jessica at the drop of a hat. I cared about her as much as I care about myself, so it was just very easy to go there. Starting up with the new character [Karen] now, I remember being like, "Why is this so hard? I thought I was really good at this. I thought I had this whole emotional accessibility thing licked because it had been so easy for the last four or five years."
And then I was like, "Oh, right. I've only known Karen for like four weeks as opposed to seven years." I have to do this work all over again, and maybe in two years I'll be at the point where I can cry at the drop of a hat for Karen. [ laughs] But it just takes a little bit of extra effort to get there, and making things even more real or higher stakes for yourself, whatever you've got to do to get yourself there. It's a reminder of how special it was to do that one show for seven years.
"True Blood's" final episode, "Thank You," airs Sunday, Aug. 24 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HBO.

Jessie J moving from UK to somewhere that appreciates her talent

Jessie-J1

Jessie J is selling up her home in London and moving to the US, because of speculation about her love life.

She has bought a property in Hollywood, claiming her talents as a singer are more appreciated in America.

The 26-year-old told The Mail on Sunday: “In America they see me as a singer whereas here I feel that people don't appreciate my voice. I've dedicated my life to singing and I want it to be taken seriously. Here it seems that all people want to know is what I've had for breakfast and who I'm sleeping with.

The former coach on BBC show The Voice came out as bisexual in 2011 and is often questioned about her sexuality.

She admitted: "Sometimes I don't know when to stop. Sometimes I should just say nothing, but I can't help myself and make some big statement when saying nothing would be much more appropriate."

The Price Tag star went on to claim that she is a "rubbish date" because she is too messy.

"I'm the sort of person who will order ribs on a date, or the spaghetti bolognese and get it all down my front.

"And I'm too full-on as a date, too intense. It's like, if I'm going to be someone's girlfriend I have to be a really good girlfriend, which can be a bit much for some people. Maybe I should relax more," she said.

"People expect me to be really aggressive and they're surprised that I can be vulnerable or feel fragile. I'm probably the least aggressive person you could meet. I'm direct yes, honest yes, but I'm not going to punch you. I am actually a really sweet girl."

I went to Wizard World Chicago yesterday (it was my first con) and I met Sebastian Stan. 99% of the time I'm really calm when meeting people, but the whole thing was awkward from the moment it started. They make you put your stuff on a table and I did just that. When I turned around to face Sebastian he was staring at me and then he finally stuttered out a "hello" and then my hi was possibly the quietest hi ever. Pictures don't do the man justice because he looks so much better in person. I said thanks after everything and dashed off to the next thing.

Shiv Kumar Batalvi was a renowned Punjabi poet and singer, who loved hard, lived fast, and died young. In this new clip from the Swet Shop Boys, comprised of Queens rapper Heems and London rapper/actor Riz MC, the late Batalvi pops up between archived shots of Bollywood glamour and militant handy-cam footage to remind us that life is a "slow suicide." Heems and Riz agree, putting in some FaceTime to spit sharp, scattered bars about the brown man's burden--their new Swet Shop EP is stuffed with similar rebel yells laid over bright, jagged beats from Ryan Hemsworth, Trooko and more. Both MCs offer blended perspectives of their home-cities and the distant lands from which their parents trekked, a lens that consistently offers something different, if not better--first-generations anywhere can relate.

#LookDifferent #Ferguson-related PSAs to air during MTV's VMAs

MTV is taking the conversation into its own hands by airing public service announcements addressing the unrest in Ferguson, Mo., during and before Sunday night’s Video Music Awards, a rep for the network confirmed.

The clips are a part of Look Different, a campaign MTV started with such organizations as the NAACP, the Anti-Defamation League, the Southern Poverty Law Center and the National Council of La Raza. One 15-second clip, set to air during a commercial break in the annual awards show, features a quote from author James Baldwin: “Not everything that is faced can be changed; but nothing can be changed until it is faced.”

It’s set against the backdrop of a simple black-and-white image of a Ferguson town sign.

Another clip, also 15 seconds-long, shows seven young people with talk of racial stereotypes in the background, with a tagline of “Look. Listen. Change.” It’s scheduled to air during the pre-show.

Ferguson has been in headlines since Aug. 9, when 18-year-old Michael Brown was shot and killed by a law enforcement official. Since then, police and citizens of the Missouri town have been at a standoff, with residents protesting.

The VMAs have often been at the center of pop culture conversations, including subjects such as race. At last year’s show, Miley Cyrus’ controversial performance spurred cries of cultural appropriation.

MTV’s Video Music Awards airs live on Sunday from the Forum in Inglewood, Calif.

'Death of Superman Lives' 2nd Trailer

$

More than a decade before Christopher Nolan revolutionized the superhero movie genre, the collective creative powerhouse talents of Kevin Smith, Tim Burton and Nicolas Cage were primed to do the same thing. To cinema's eternal loss, however, it never came to pass — and now The Death of Superman Lives: What Happened wants to tell the world why.

A new trailer has been released to coincide with a second campaign to raise the funds necessary to complete Jon Schnepp’s crowdfunded documentary, which looks into the troubled history of the ill-fated production from the 1990s. Alongside interviews with Burton, Smith and others, including comic book writer Grant Morrison, the documentary also features rare and unseen footage shot during preproduction. The trailer is worth watching for Smith’s description of fan response to the movie alone: “Even though the Internet didn’t exist, the Internet was still mad,” he deadpans.

Schnepp updated the progress of the documentary in his appeal for more funding, writing that “the last eight months have been full of incredible highs and unforeseen lows,” including “surprise medical bills, equipment repair fees, and various other unplanned costs that weren't factored into my original campaign.”

As of writing, almost $78,000 of the necessary $85,000 has been raised, with 16 days of the campaign left to run. Proof, if nothing else, that almost everyone wants to see more of the interview with Tim Burton in which he complains about being reminded of the project by asking “Why are you bringing up such painful memories? I’ve just, in the last year, finally recovered from the shaking.

Box Office Milestone: 'Guardians of the Galaxy' Becomes Top Summer Film in U.S.

$

Pulling off the biggest box office surprise of the year, James Gunn's August tentpole Guardians of the Galaxy has become the top grossing film of the summer in North America, outsmarting the likes of Transformers: Age of Extinction and The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

The Marvel Studios and Disney movie is expected to finish Saturday with a domestic total of roughly $246 million, eclipsing the $243.3 million grossed by Age of Extinction. By Sunday, Guardians' North American cume will have climbed to $251 million or more (and it's poised to win the weekend ahead of new YA film adaptation If I Stay).

On Friday, Guardians of the Galaxy passed up fellow Disney title Maleficent ($237 million), until then the summer's No. 2 title in North America.

Fox's X-Men: Days of Future Past ranks No. 4 on the domestic summer chart with $232.6 million, while Fox's Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and Sony's The Amazing Spider-Man are all but tied at No. 5 with $202.9 million.

Worldwide, Paramount and Michael Bay's Age of Extinction remains the summer leader by far, with a global gross of $1.05 billion.

Guardians' global total to date is $430.7 million and climbing.

Heading into summer, no one predicted that Gunn's quirky superhero tentpole would emerge the victor in North America. Opening Aug. 1, the movie amazed with a record domestic debut and continued to impress from there.

Featuring a ragtag group of unlikely galactic heroes, Guardians stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Lee Pace and Bradley Cooper, who voices the role of Rocket the raccoon. Vin Diesel, Djimon Hounsou, John C. Reilly, Glenn Close and Benicio del Toro also star.

Guardians wasn't a cheap proposition and cost $170 million to produce. Marvel and Disney have already announced plans for a July 28, 2017 sequel, with Gunn returning to direct.

Doctor Who criticized for featuring first on-screen lesbian kiss

The latest episode of the sci-fi series, titled Deep Breath, aired last night on BBC One to over 7 million people, in addition to special screenings in over 400 cinemas.

In the episode, Silurian lizard-woman Madame Vastra (Neve McIntosh) was forced to lock lips with her human wife Jenny Flint (Catrin Stewart) – the first time they have done so on screen. The pair have recurred on the show since 2011 and have long been portrayed as lovers. The episode featured clockwork droids who sense life forms by their breath, with Jenny attempting to hold her breath to avoid them. When she struggled to breathe, however, Madame Vastra helped her survive by sharing her own oxygen.

Although the episode has received a generally positive reaction from fans, some have attacked the “unnecessary” kiss and they show’s “blatant gay agenda”.

One reviewer wrote: “Found those characters that liked to display their preferences to be inappropriate for a children’s program, but the BBC seem to want to become a porn channel and are slowly edging into it. I think they wish to come out of the closet, well I have no objection to that if they become a private adult channel, but not on our licence fee.”

Another wrote: “I thought it was gratuitous and not particularly welcome in a family show aimed at kids. It just seems [executive producer Steven Moffat] is on some weird, lizard-lesbian perv trip.”

Last night’s episode also touched on the unconventional nature of the relationship of the pair – who live in Victorian London – with Jenny acknowledging the need to pose as Vastra’s “maid” to keep their relationship a secret.

Doctor Who has featured several prominent LGB characters, such as John Barrowman’s omnisexual Captain Jack Harkness, since its revival in 2005.

Deep Breath marked the debut of Peter Capaldi as The Doctor, taking over from Matt Smith, who regenerated during last year’s Christmas special, and made a surprise cameo in last night’s episode.

Doctor Who is set to continue next Saturday, August 30, on BBC One.
