She is the model of the moment, ‘the coolest girl in England’ – as underlined by 6.2 million Instagram followers who monitor every pout.
But behind those famous eyebrows, Cara Delevingne is also a highly successful businesswoman who, according to new figures from Forbes wealth analysis, has made at least £2.1 million in the past year.
Not bad for a 22-year-old.
But this is only the beginning: with the help of Sarah Doukas, co-founder of agency Storm who also discovered Kate Moss, Cara is heading for the financial stratosphere.
For the approaching season she stars in six major advertising campaigns – including last week’s daring naked portrait, right, to advertise Tom Ford’s Black Orchid perfume.
And she has her fingers in still more lucrative pies.
Earlier this month, she celebrated the launch of her Mulberry handbag.
She is taking on Hollywood with roles in at least two movies.
And with appearance fees and licensing deals, Cara is well on her way to a huge fortune.
This coming year alone, industry insiders calculate she will earn more than £9 million, quite aside from her inherited wealth.
Here, after delving into the inner workings of the Delevingne machine, we reveal just how the model has struck gold.
MODELLING: She's haut to trot!
ESTIMATED EARNINGS: £2m
Last year, Vogue hailed Cara as the ‘star face’ of the season.
She has walked for some of the world’s top designers including Marc Jacobs, Matthew Williamson, Mulberry and Burberry.
For the Autumn/Winter 2013 season she strutted her stuff at an exhausting 41 shows.
According to a fashion insider, unknown models earn from £1,000 per show but a model of Cara’s calibre could make as much as £50,000 to walk for a luxury label.
The source said: ‘In Paris, the budgets are higher and starting fees can be around £10,000.
‘I wouldn’t be surprised if she earned upwards of £50,000 for Chanel. Whenever Cara models in a show she either opens or closes it, or both. Girls who open or close shows get paid more.’
Anusha Couttigane, fashion consultant for retail analysts Conlumino, added: ‘Modelling at the top for Burberry and H&M can attract fees of up to £500,000.
‘Miranda Kerr’s contract for Victoria’s Secret was worth around $1 million [roughly £600,000] over three years.’
CAMPAIGNING: Readies to wear
ESTIMATED EARNINGS: £4m+
Her first shoot was as a goofy ten-year-old for Italian Vogue, with mother Pandora.
But next season Cara will appear in major campaigns for Mulberry, Chanel, Burberry, Topshop and Balmain.
One fashion editor said: ‘In the days of Naomi Campbell and Linda Evangelista, models got paid a lot more for walking. Now the big money comes from being the face of a brand.
'The biggest deals command fees of up to £5 million for three years.’
Cara still gets out of bed for the smaller brands – earning £20,000 a day working for the Next directory.
SIGNING: Licensed to sell, sell, sell
ESTIMATED EARNINGS: £100k
In 2012, Cara registered her name as a trademark.
This enables her to produce and endorse a variety of products guaranteed to sell millions.
The earning potential of, say, a Cara eyebrow kit, is hard to quantify but the highest paid endorsement to date lies with Beyoncé who secured a staggering $50 million deal with Pepsi.
Trademark lawyer Tahir Basheer said endorsements and licensing deals were two of the ‘most lucrative areas for a celebrity with a brand attached to them’.
DESIGNING: The ultimate bag lady
ESTIMATED EARNINGS: £2.4m
Following British model Alexa Chung’s lead, Cara has collaborated with Mulberry on her own range of handbags.
A fashion insider said the British brand could have paid Cara about £100,000 but also revealed that she could be getting about 15 per cent of gross sales.
‘Rosie Huntington-Whiteley was paid a base rate for her collaboration with Marks & Spencer but on top of that earned five per cent of all garment sales, and it’s likely that Cara will do the same with her Mulberry bags,’ the insider said.
Mulberry sold 380 Alexa bags at £750 each in one week shortly after their release in 2009.
Should Cara’s £995 bags – that can also be worn as backpacks – prove to be as successful, industry experts estimate she could earn up to £2.2 million in the next year.
In addition, Cara has collaborated with US label DKNY to produce a 15-piece capsule collection, out in November. Experts suggest she could have been paid an estimated £90,000 for the line.
ACTING: Walking and talking at the same time!
ESTIMATED EARNINGS: £650k
It's no secret that Cara would rather grace the silver screen than the catwalk and over the past year she has made serious in-roads into Hollywood.
Her first appearance was in Anna Karenina in 2012.
She is currently playing a mermaid in Pan, a Hollywood adaptation of the Peter Pan story, with Hugh Jackman and Amanda Seyfried, and has just finished filming Tulip Fever with Prince Harry’s ex-girlfriend Cressida Bonas and Oscar-winner Judi Dench, and Kids In Love with Bafta winner Will Poulter.
A Hollywood source said Cara may have been paid around £50,000 for her role in Pan.
‘She might be big in fashion but not in the movie world,’ the source said.
‘Until she’s a proven box office draw the studio is not going to pay her much at all.
'In marketing terms the studios are being very smart, thinking she’ll tweet and Instagram all her followers. The studio is getting more than she is.’
INHERITING: From the bank of mum and dad
ESTIMATED EARNINGS: £30m
Cara was educated at £32,000-a-year Bedales school in Hampshire.
She lives at the Belgravia home of her parents but has been househunting in Notting Hill.
Her Godmother is Joan Collins.
Cara’s father Charles, a former ‘Debs’ delight’ has a property company, Harvey White Properties, worth about £30 million.
Accounts reveal that Cara and her sisters Chloe and Poppy own a small number of shares in the business.
Cara’s mother Pandora, a former society beauty and Tatler writer, is a personal shopper.
APPEARING: Just turn up and cash in...
ESTIMATED EARNINGS: £100k
Cara can make a small fortune just by turning up to be seen at events and launches.
According to one source, singer Katy Perry is rumoured to rake in £50,000 just for sitting on the front row at fashion shows.
The source said: ‘The celebs sitting front row are often getting more than the models.’
During the past year, Cara has made a number of paid appearances at events around the world. One industry insider claims she could earn about £20,000 for every event she attends.
Celebrity agent Jonathan Shalit believes this is just the start of her earning potential.
‘An Arab sheik opening a nightclub in Dubai might pay up to £100,000 for a celebrity to attend,’ he said.
‘It’s a massive business. Paris Hilton got $1.5 million for DJ-ing in Europe and Kanye West got $3 million for playing at the wedding of the grandson of the Kazakhstan president.
‘Cara is someone everyone wants. She is the coolest girl in England right now. I think she could get anything up to £50,000 for an appearance and that would be just for an hour’s work.’
