The Original 'Avengers' Script Was A Disaster, According To Joss Whedon

0
0

Known for TV shows with cult followings, Joss Whedon would only get involved in "Marvel's The Avengers" if he had a script he believed in. Unfortunately, that meant trashing the draft by Zak Penn that Disney was sitting on.

Whedon was brought into the project at a late date, as recounted in "Joss Whedon: The Biography" by Amy Pascale, which comes out on August 1. It was during an initial interview with Kevin Feige, president of production at Marvel Studios, that he saw Penn's script and passed judgment.

"I don't think you have anything," Whedon told Feige. “You need to pretend this draft never happened.”

"There was a script," Whedon acknowledged in a later interview with GQ. "There just wasn't a script I was going to film a word of."

Feige and company may have been displeased to hear this, but people took Whedon seriously. After all, he was the genius behind "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Angel," "Firefly," "Dollhouse," and "Cabin In The Woods," all critically acclaimed (if not always successful) genre redefiners marked by witty dialogue, as well as smaller creative projects like "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog." He had comics credibility, too, being a long time fan, a candidate to direct or direct comic movies dating back to "X-Men" in 2000, and the writer of an excellent run on "Astonishing X-Men" comics.

Whedon went home from his meeting with Feige and wrote five pages of material explaining his plan for the Avengers, also coming up with the tagline: "The Avengers: Some Assembly Required" — riffing on the "Avengers Assemble" slogan from the comic books.

Marvel quickly signed him up to write and direct the movie, stipulating only that he include the Avengers and trickster god Loki, with a battle among superheros in the middle and an epic battle against villains at the end, and that he get the movie out in time for a May 2012 release.

The cast and crew loved it, as actor Clark Gregg told Pascale:

“[The script] was funny and still tongue-in-cheek and really got the tone, the Tony Stark tone of the Marvel universe, and still furthered and explored each one of those characters and those relationships. I found out later from other people involved that had the same reaction—like, oh, wow. Oh, wow. Everybody gets to play. Everybody gets to play, and it’s going to be better than anything we reasonably hoped for.”

Critics liked it, as the resulting movie earned a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and audiences liked it, too, leading to a $1.5 billion global gross, the third-highest-grossing movie ever.

As for Penn, a veteran superhero scriptwriter whose record includes underwhelming movies like "Elektra" and "X-Men: The Last Stand," he seems relatively composed about getting trashed by Whedon.

"We could have collaborated more, but that was not his choice. He wanted to do it his way, and I respect that. I mean, it's not like on the 'Hulk ,' where I got replaced by the lead actor," Penn told GQ, referring to Edward Norton's takeover of screenwriting duties on that film. "That was an unusual one. This was more normal."

Whedon shared a story credit with Penn but took the screenplay credit for himself.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s son still has no idea who his mum is – four years after his birth, the youngster’s family admitted last night.
The Real Madrid and Portugal star’s sister Elma said Cristiano Jnr, dubbed Cristianinho, has stopped asking about the woman, believed to be a surrogate mother.

She added: “Once we told him she was in Heaven, but my brother and mum asked us not to repeat it.
"We say now his mum went travelling . He doesn’t ask anymore.”

Questions about the woman surfaced again last week when Ronaldo’s mum Dolores Aveiro released an official biography in which she revealed she went to the US to pick up Cristianinho after his 2010 birth.

She said Ronaldo, 29, told her: “The mum will never be known.”

Dolores lives in Madrid with her son to help him bring up his boy.

Her biographer Paulo Sousa Costa hinted Ronaldo may wed girlfriend Irina Shayk.

He said: “Dolores knows sooner or later he’ll get married.”

Pivot Sticks With 'Please Like Me,' Orders Third Season

The year-old cable network gives an early greenlight to the co-production and also acquires reality series "The Operatives."

Plenty of young networks don't keep the series from their launch, but Pivot is still very fond of Please Like Me. The network announced a third-season pickup for the dramedy at the start of Friday's panel at the Television Critics Association summer press tour.

"I'm thrilled to announce that Please Like Me is coming back for a third season," said Pivot executive vp originals Belisa Balaban. "Josh Thomas' work is a true revelation of the soul of his generation — messy and complicated, smart yet naive, wickedly self-aware and unapologetically hopeful. We're delighted to continue our collaboration with ABC Australia on the show."

Pivot came on board with Please Like Me after its first season aired in Australia, where it also films, and the network has since become a production partner in the series. It stands out among the bulk of Pivot's other offerings — news, reality and acquisitions — as its scripted centerpiece. (Stanley Tucci starrer Fortitude will come to the network in 2015 after its original run on U.K. broadcaster Sky.)

As for how this process has changed since the stateside upstart came on board, Please Like Me creator, star and writer Thomas was very candid about his initial apprehension. "Last time I was here, it was a new relationship," he said of his first TCA visit in 2013. "I was thinking 'Who are these guys, and are they going to f— me?' And they didn't. They're quite lovely."

The sophomore run of Please Like Me starts Aug. 8 on Pivot.

Other news Pivot brought out on Friday was the order for new unscripted original The Operatives. The series, acquired from Zodiak Rights, follows elite, radical conservationists who take on the world's worst eco offenders.

Queen Cheryl to Celebrate Wedding This Week with Family and Friends!

British pop star Cheryl Cole will celebrate her wedding for a second time this week for family and friends who missed her nuptials.

The 'Fight For This Love' hitmaker tied the knot with her boyfriend of three months Jean-Bernard Fernandez-Versini on the Caribbean island of Mustique earlier this month. Only her mother Joan Callaghan and assistant Lily England were among the handful of guests at the secret ceremony.

Most of Cole's friends and family were reportedly surprised by the wedding news and now the couple is hunting for venues in London to toast their marriage with their loved ones.

A source tells Britain's Sunday Mirror, "Cheryl and Jean-Bernard took everyone by surprise when they announced they were married. A lot of her family haven't even met the guy, and some were upset about missing the big day. So they want to do something to make up for things... It will also be a great opportunity for family and friends of both sides to get to know each other."

Former Destiny's Child member Farrah Franklin arrested

Ex-Destiny's Child singer Farrah Franklin was arrested in South Carolina early Sunday morning for disorderly conduct ... TMZ has learned and our sources tell us alcohol was definitely involved.

Franklin -- who who spent 5 months with the group in 2000 before Beyonce and Kelly Rowland gave her the boot -- was booked into the Horry County Detention Center in Conway around 5AM.

So far, it's unclear what led to the arrest ... but were told she was ticketed for disorderly conduct.

Hours before, Franklin happily posted a picture on the beach.

She was released Sunday afternoon on bond.

This is not Franklin's first arrest for flying off the handle. She was popped in 2011 in L.A. for disorderly conduct ... and we're told booze was also involved. She claimed she was the victim of racial profiling.

'True Blood's' Nathan Parsons on Recent Episode: It's a 'Difficult Line to Walk'

0
0

[WARNING: Spoilers from Sunday's episode of True Blood, "Lost Cause."]

The tension between Lafayette (Nelsan Ellis) and James (Nathan Parsons) reached another level in Sunday’s True Blood.

The pair’s connection was hinted at in previous episodes, with James admitting to “groovin’ on” Lafayette in last Sunday’s hour. When Jessica (Deborah Ann Woll) gives James the cold shoulder yet again at Bon Temps’ mainstreaming party, he goes to a sympathetic Lafayette and the pair end up having sex. Jessica walks in on them and breaks up with James.

Parsons tells The Hollywood Reporter it’s the last viewers will see of the James-Jessica romance.“The line is drawn after this episode. Now we’ll start to see more of Lafayette and l together, and Jessica has another thing she’s going to start dealing with,” he says.

The actor points out that this intimate a male homosexual relationship has been rare on True Blood and that Lafayette’s scenes with Jesús (Kevin Alejandro) in previous seasons were less physical. He tells THR it was a new acting challenge for him, but that working with Ellis this season made it more natural. “It helped immensely to know him and to trust him and trust each other that we’re going to do this right,” he says.

He talks with THR about the sex scene, filming with Ellis and his Jim Morrison influences.

What attracts James and Lafayette to each other?

I think they’re kind of of similar minds. James is a flower child himself. He’s a hippie, he’s free love. The trick with James is, though he’s a pacifist, he’s still a vampire, which is not a peaceful thing to be. This inner conflict that he always has is externalized with Jessica, when she’s getting upset with him. He’s just trying to be the right person for Jess, and she keeps blowing him off. Lafayette’s the only one who has the interest and takes the time to say, "What’s wrong, what’s going on with you?" There’s a mutual connection where they both just want to have fun and be easy, love each other, take care of each other.

James became a vampire because of intolerance to homosexuality in the 1970s. Will he face it again in present-day Bon Temps?

Because the town is already going through so much because of this vampire apocalypse, basically, no matter what your preference is, if you look out for and care about each other, they’re going to overlook it. There’s a lot more that could have been discovered and gone over with that -- there’s just way too much that needs to happen. There is still some other trouble that arises, but that’s not till later episodes. It’s nothing related specifically to sexuality and to gender. It has much more to do with the overarching problems that vampires cause.

You’ve filmed almost exclusively with Nelsan this season. What is it like working with him?

He’s fantastic. The very first episode, the scene between the two of us was my first day ever on the set, and so right off the bat I knew working with him was awesome. He’s brilliant, just the way that he plays around with the scenes, with the words -- he’s so free when he’s in that character. What he just naturally brings to the character is so free, it allows you permission to do that yourself. It forces you as an actor to be completely present and responsive. You’re not sure if he’s going to start dancing, or what.

This episode is a turning point in Lafayette and James’ relationship. What was most difficult about shooting those scenes?

We just had to be really careful about how we went about it. We didn’t want it to be uncomfortable to watch or over the top. It has to be something that is seemingly organic and loving, instead of just having sex for the sake of having sex. I think that was the difficult line to walk. It comes out of nowhere and we have to do it tastefully, and we all have to be comfortable with what’s happening. But Howard [Deutch], the director, was great about it. Nelsan and I just went along for the ride, and I think it turned out really well.

And this story is important and should be told and needs to be shared. It’s a story that’s being told all over the place, and TV doesn’t pay enough attention to it. The "Do I love this guy or love this girl?" and "Is this right or is this wrong?" becomes more important than the act itself, and that I think was really well done by the writer [Craig Chester] and Howard and Nelsan and myself.

How did you approach shooting their sex scene?

It was a full-night shoot, and we had a bunch of group stuff to do earlier that day. There were 20 actors there and we shot all their stuff, and then for the last four or five hours it was just me and Nelsan. I think once we got over the craziness of organizing the extras, and doing the group shots and the Steadicam work, we were able to focus in on the intimate moments without the distractions. Once you break the ice physically, then it all becomes easier, and you realize it is just two people. There’s another 200 people in the crew, of course. But in that moment, it’s really just about two people and a shared connection. That right there made the whole thing work out -- that we’ll get to the physical stuff, that’s a given, but before that and after that, there are little moments of true connection that happen, and they just escalate and escalate.

You replaced Luke Grimes in the role. What did you bring to playing James?

He’s a Jim Morrison type, so I started reading Jim Morrison’s biography. There were all these little details. He was always really soft-spoken, never raised his voice. Luke did something similar, but they also talked about the way that Jim Morrison would stand sometimes, the way he’d sometimes suck in his cheeks, all his interesting quirks. I thought, "Huh, maybe I can work these in here. Maybe I can play with the idea that Jim Morrison is alive, he just got turned into a vampire."

The 5 Worst Summer Weekends at the Box Office in the Last 5 Years

0
0

It has not been a strong summer at the box office. Though the box-office was up compared to last year heading into the summer (thanks in part to Captain America and The LEGO Movie), it quickly frittered away its lead. There have been a few hits this summer (Maleficent, 22 Jump Street) but the huge blockbusters haven’t been performing as hugely as they’re supposed to, and there have been a lot of films expected to be hits that have flailed. Tammy, for instance. And this weekend’s Sex Tape, which opened with $15 million, behind the soft openings of Planes: Fire & Rescue ($18 million) and The Purge: Anarchy ($28 million). Thankfully, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is doing its part this summer, falling only 50 percent to hold the lead this weekend with another $36 million. (It’s at #138 million after 10 days, and $240 million worldwide).

How bad has this summer been? I looked at the overall weekend grosses over the last five years for the summer (May through July), and TWO of the worst weekends during that period came in 2014. In fact, the 4th of July weekend this year was the worst since 1999, when Wild Wild West bombed at the box office.

Here are the worst five weekends at the box office since 2009.

5. June 10-12, 2011 ($137 million)

Opener Super 8 ($35 million) led a weak weekend of holdovers (X-Men: First Class and Hangover 2. The other weekend’s new entry, Judy Moody and the NOT Bummer Summer, finished 7th with $6 million.

4. May 9-11, 2014 ($136 million)

Neighbors actually had a very solid opening weekend ($49 million), but nothing else could get going. Amazing Spider-Man 2 fell 61 percent in its second weekend, and the other two openers, Mom’s Night Out and Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return were DOA. In fact, Captain America ($6 million) was number five, and it opened six weeks before.

3. July 4-6, 2014 ($132 million)

Tammy ($21 million), Deliver Us from Evil ($9 million), and Earth to Echo ($8.3 million) all opened behind Transformers: Age of Extinction ($37 million) in its disappointing second weekend, making this easily the worst 4th of July at the box office in at least five years.

2. June 15-17, 2012 ($130 million)

Openers Rock of Ages ($14,437,269) and That’s My Boy ($13,453,714) finished third and fourth, behind holdovers Madagascar 3 and Prometheus

1. June 4-6th, 2010 ($128 million)

There were four new releases that weekend (Get Him to the Greek, $17 million; Killers, $15 million; Marmaduke, $11.5 million), and Splice, $7.3 million, and none of them could overtake Shrek Forever After in its third week ($25 million).

Salsa.

What's your favorite summer blockbuster? Difficulty: can't say The Mummy.

A Ranking Of 27 (5) Classic ’00s Teen Movies, From Worst To Best

0
0
00
Hello! We (Tabatha, Roz, and Ailbhe) were all teenagers who watched a lot of chick flicks in the ’00s.
Here is our ranking of the most pertinent cinematic masterpieces of the greatest decade.

18. Crossroads (2002)
000000
Tabatha: This was an absolute flop but I loved it.
Roz: BRITNEY FOREVER. I remember the cool karaoke scene. They bury a box in a field? A box of memories and crap.
Ailbhe: The cool girl in my class saw this three times and made us call her Britney.
Tabatha: I just remember being so envious of the fact they could drive. I thought that driving would just open up a whole new world of endless possibilities.
Roz: They were cool American teens who could drive a car and bury boxes in gardens.
Tabatha: According to Wikipedia, Samantha from Sex And The City was in this?!?!
Roz: WHAT?
Tabatha: She was Britney’s mum. Just imagine.

10. A Cinderella Story (2004)
00000
Tabatha: Hilary Duff and Chad Michael Murray!
Ailbhe: She wears very cool pink Converse.
Roz: They make characters “quirky” by putting them in Converse.
Tabatha: This film had a weird subplot where her stepsisters were advanced synchronised swimmers.
Ailbhe: THERE WAS A COMPUTER LOVE ELEMENT! They instant messaged! Her screen name was Cinderella!
Tabatha: And his was Nomad! Hang on, there is another weird subplot in this where their town is in the middle of a severe drought.
Ailbhe: What made them think, “This film needs more… drought.”
Tabatha: Maybe they thought, “This film needs less… water.”
Roz: “Kids these days, they care about droughts, right?”
Ailbhe: “Converse and droughts!”

5. A Walk to Remember (2002)
00000
Tabatha: SO MANY FEELINGS.
Roz: :(:(:(:(:( so sad. Mandy Moore appreciation.
Tabatha: The bit where he meets her dad at the end and he’s upset because she never got to witness a miracle. And then the dad goes, “She did. That miracle was you.” MY GOD. I’m almost crying as I type this.
Roz: The boy builds her a telescope.
Ailbhe: What an odd gift. “You are unwell so here is a piece of scientific hardware, feel better.”
Roz: “All I ever wanted in life was a, er, telescope.”
Tabatha: STOP MOCKING THIS. IT WAS VERY VERY TOUCHING. Also, Mandy Moore wore dungarees in this film and Christ, she looked cool.

4. Save the Last Dance (2001)
00000
Roz: There are a million and one things I could say about how much I love this film. The soundtrack is perfect, the dance routine at the end is mindblowing, Sean Patrick Thomas is great, and then there is JULIA STILES.
Tabatha: SEAN PATRICK THOMAS WAS SO SO SO FIT IN THIS.
Roz: Yaaaaaaas.
Ailbhe Hang on, guess how old SPT is now?! 43?!
Tabatha: THAT IS UNTRUE.
Roz: WHAT?
Roz: Guess who his sister is in the film? Kerry Washington! Pre-Scandal. She makes Julia look cool by giving her hoop earrings and a bandana in the car before they enter the cub. She also teaches Julia to say the word “slamming”.

2. Get Over It (2001)
00000
Roz: The song at the start! It is perfect. The “Stop, stop! Cuz I reallyy love youu, stop, stop! I’ve been thinking of youuuuu” song.
AIlbhe: I love this film. The guy’s parents were sexperts with a TV show! And Sisqo was in it. AND Mila Kunis.
Tabatha: Also Colin Hanks, son of Tom Hanks.
Roz: They put on the play at the end. A Midsummer Night’s Dream, I think.
Tabatha: Yes. And then as they say their lines they realise that they’re not acting and all the feelings they are expressing are true.
Ailbhe: Little Steve the fairy! “SIT DOWN, LITTLE STEVE!” There was a guy at uni with me who looked like Little Steve and I used to say, “SIT DOWN, LITTLE STEVE!” in my head whenever I saw him.

Electro troupe Dragonette are certainly no strangers to a good ol’ dance floor collabo, having teamed up with Martin Solveig for their inescapable smash “Hello,” as well as Kaskade‘s storming “Fire In Your New Shoes.”

This time around, they’ve joined Amsterdam based producer Mike Mago for a throbbing, summery House-pop production called “Outlines” due out on August 15 — and it’s got all the makings of a smash.

“Another dance in the dark/Another love undercover/Outlines of a heart,” songstress Martina repeats before giving way to a deep, funky beat breakdown. The club cut blends in nicely with the ongoing House revival across the pond, including Disclosure and Clean Bandit.

Saaphyri gets her boobs fixed and Venus D'Lite tries to get more surgeries to look like Madonna

0
0
Sunday's brand new episode of Botched was filled with lots of drama!

We met Saaphyri who was unhappy with her breasts and tummy, Adam who wanted to look more like Madonna than he already did and Diana who needed to get her nose fixed.

The first patient we meet is Saaphyri, who is a previous reality rock star!

A few years ago she lost a good amount of weight, but it made her breasts change shape and her stomach wasn't affected by the weight loss. So she went to get liposuction in her stomach and have her breasts lifted to look more natural. She explains, "You know, like a little chocolate Barbie."

After the surgery was done, the doctor put a girdle on her, which made an indentation on her stomach that never went away, and her breasts were way bigger than she expected.

Saaphyri sits down with a talent manager about branching out and doing something other than reality shows.

She wants her ideas to be put on scream and would like to become more than just her breasts. The eccentric lady explains, "Kind of like a guy who likes to wear women's underwear, he knows what's going on underneath there, nobody else does. That's what I want."

Then Saaphyri meets with Dr. Terry Dubrow and Dr. Paul Nassif to discuss her past with plastic surgery and what she would like in the future. The first thing she explains to them is that she lost a lot of weight in the past, except in her stomach.

She then shocks the doctors when she tells them that she woke up during her past surgery and when she made a comment the doctor told her to shut up!

Watch her describe the insane operation. Her previous surgeon was murdered?!

Dr. Dubrow explains they will cut into her breasts, around the areola to reduce the size and reduce the size of her breasts. To which she gets very excited about!

They decide her abdomen is very full and she needs some liposuction and a tummy tuck.

Adam works in a new show in New York four nights a week, as Madonna. Living the dream. He goes shopping to get costumes made for him and his dancers, and goes on an endless search for the perfect materials.

It's surgery day for Saaphyri and Dr. Dubrow is confident he can make things much better, but because she has so much breast tissue, her breasts may still be slightly larger than she wants.

Once in surgery, Dr. Dubrow discovers that her implants were only 300 ccs, which means his initial concerns were accurate, her natural breast tissue was making her boobs big.

He put in 200cc implants, but didn't want to remove any breast tissue because then you are decreasing blood supply.

He then works on her abdomen by suctioning three areas, and removing the dented section that she hates.

Next we meet Adam, the self-proclaimed number one Madonna impersonator in the world.

Adam makes a grand entrance when he meets with the doctor's and tells them to call him Venus D'lite, his name as the Madonna impersonator.

The doctors are very intrigued…

They step into the exam room, and the doctors realize Adam already has a Madonna nose. Dr. Nassif explains that the surgeries Adam wants will only do more harm.

Adam agrees.

But before Adam leaves, Dr. Dubrow wants to learn some moves.

On Saaphyri's one week check-in, she is a little out of it, sleepy and in some pain.

But Dr. Dubrow is really happy with her results, and so is she!

Saaphyri surprises her friends by rolling up in a limo for her post-surgery reveal! She explains, "I can't wait to surprise my friends with my hot new body."

Doesn't she look great?!

She is so happy to have her botched results fixed!

Her breasts are flawless now, and way more proportionate to her body.

Pretty much posting this for Saaphyri because I love her and I miss VH1 celebreality.
