THE WILD CHILD—Emilia Clarke
By MERLE GINSBERG and LAURIE SANDELL
FOUR YEARS AGO, when Emilia Clarke was fresh out of drama school and "working six jobs to pay the rent," she got a call from her agent: She had 24 hours to prepare for an audition for a new HBO show called Game of Thrones. "I called in sick to my catering job and Wikipedia-ed the crap out of it," recalls the 27-year-old London-based actress, who landed the part of Daenerys "Dany" Targaryen four days later. "To be employed by HBO, I was like, 'I can die now.'" These days, she flies off to locales like Malta, Croatia, and Morocco to film the fantasy series, the fourth season of which just premiered. Though her role—a displaced, white-blonde queen with three dragons as charges—is arguably the most memorable in a show full of unforgettable characters, the Emmy-nominated Clarke herself goes unrecognized most of the time, thanks to her natural brown hair and decidedly contemporary wardrobe. Today, she's wearing white Topshop skinny jeans, a Helmut Lang tank top, and Tory Burch wedge sandals, a far cry from Daenerys' signature flowing togas.

But flying beneath the radar keeps her humble. Clarke's response to a recent AskMen survey that named her Most Desirable Woman of 2014? "I'm sure it was some member of my family clicking a thousand times," jokes Clarke. "Maybe one of those men could ask me out on a date." And should she ever fall prey to an inflated Tinseltown ego, her tiny hometown in Buckinghamshire in the south of England promises to keep her grounded. "I get to go home and walk the dog and no one really cares in the most glorious way," she says. "They're more intrigued about whether people are picking up the dog muck from the path."

Clarke might have inherited her down-to-earth genes from her parents. She recalls showing her father, a theater sound engineer, a gold necklace inscribed with her "Mother of Dragons" moniker, "MOD," given to her by Game of Thrones writers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. Upon inspecting the nameplate, her father asked with a furrowed brow, "Why on earth have you got 'Ministry of Defense''round your neck?"

In addition to her Game of Thrones role, Clarke has played Holly Golightly in the Broadway version of Breakfast at Tiffany's. She waxes exuberant equally about those she knows and respects (stage co-star Cory Michael Smith is "the love of my life...a fierce talent...a serious one to watch") and those she's never met and respects, like her "favorite person on the planet": Ryan Gosling. "I don’t know him," she says. "I've just read this interview where I'm like, 'Okay, you're now officially beautiful and intelligent.'"

She's also done small British indies like 2012's Spike Island, for which she claims viewers will need subtitles to understand her Manchester accent, and the just-released Dom Hemingway, in which she plays a daughter estranged from her criminal father (Jude Law). And for her next huge break, she's currently training to play Sarah Connor in the next Terminator movie, set for 2015.

Though Clarke is just getting started, she already has her eye fixed firmly on the golden ring: "Personally, I'd like as many children as I can pop out, I reckon. You come from a happy family; you want to create a happy family. And in the same breath, I'd like to be on stage at England's National Theatre, doing Miller and Chekhov. Give me a Sam Mendes/Tennessee Williams combination—that would be glorious. And to be making some Oscar-worthy movies with Scorsese. I'm always looking for the hard road. That way, you remain interested and interesting. Hopefully."

The Real Housewives Of Atlanta Special 90 Minute Season Finale: A Sad Moment For Kenya Moore!

0
0

It’s so easy to be snarky when it comes to The Real Housewives of Atlanta most of the time; the ladies on this show fight, battle each other for authority, and there are moments where we even start to question how in the world some of these people function in their day-to-day lives.

With all of this being said, though, there are still some things in life that can manage to bring together people from all sorts of backgrounds, personalities, incomes, and more: Losing someone you love, whether it be a person or a pet.

So while we’ve rolled our eyes at Kenya Moore aplenty this season, we do feel for her in the sneak-peek video below from Sunday’s finale as she tries to handle the loss of her dog Velvet.

It’s an instantly-relatable subject of conversation that if you’ve had pets, you immediately start to think about some of them you have lost over the years.

Away from the sadness of this story, there is other stuff going down that will be of the traditional flavor, with drama & eye-rolling left and right.

Check out the synopsis: “It’s just days before the debut of Kandi’s musical, and ticket sales are far from booming. NeNe returns from her travels experiencing unusual pains, causing her to seek medical attention. As Phaedra nears the end of her mortuary science journey, Apollo reveals his concern for their marriage.”

Mama Joyce Breaks Down Before Kandi's Wedding?!

This season of The Real Housewives of Atlanta has been a rocky one for Mama Joyce who acted out several times against her daughter, Kandi Burruss' then engagement to Todd Tucker.

While the couple tied the knot on April 4, a sneak peek of the sixth season finale showed that Mama Joyce had one last breakdown when discussing her daughter's relationship. Though Mama Joyce has been very vocal when it came to being against Tucker and Burruss' engagement, no one could really pinpoint what her real issue with Tucker was.

Mama Joyce decided to visit a therapist to talk about her problem and opened up about her initial problem with Tucker as well as where she thinks her relationship with her daughter took a wrong turn.

"Somewhere along the line we just lost communication and her fiancé, I'm not that crazy about him...The first thing he did was quit his job. Who wouldn't quit a $90-$100,0000 dollar job for a woman that's a millionaire."

She confessed that Tucker's actions is what caused her to question his motives; hence her cuing the dramatics this season.

Dr. Simone who already has a tense marriage with her husband, who plays the "homemaker" role and parent while she works long hours, seems to be a little irritated when his wife shows up late for dinner, their son's games, and more.

Mad Men': Burning Questions for the Season 7 Premiere

0
0

Don Draper and friends are back this Sunday for the “Mad Men” Season 7 premiere on AMC! It’s the beginning of the end -- the show’s final season -- and we want answers!

As the show prepares to wrap, these are our burning questions:

What do all those airport ads mean? Jon Hamm told us, it’s “metaphoric,” and co-star John Slattery agreed, adding, “Every one of the characters has come a long way.”

What’s next for Don Draper? It looks like the advertising genius and Clio Award winner has hit rock bottom. He gave the pitch of a lifetime to Hershey then ended it by admitting he grew up in a whorehouse… while his hands shook from alcohol withdrawal. SC&P let him go after that. Meanwhile, he’s on the outs with wife Megan over the move to L.A. and his daughter Sally, who caught him cheating with the neighbor lady.

Will Sally forgive her dad? She was so mad at him last season over his womanizing, it didn't seem like Sally and Don would ever make up. Then she started acting out and trying out some of her dad's vices, like drinking and smoking. When Don takes her to see the rundown house where he grew up, she looks at him in a new light. Maybe there's hope for these two after all.

Will we see more of Betty this season? Sure, she slept with Don and gave Sally a cigarette, but otherwise we didn't see a whole lot of Betty in Season 6. When it comes to Betty, we hope the writers keep the crazy coming!

Is Peggy Olson taking over for Don? When Don was ousted, Peggy was promoted to de facto creative director. A shot of Olson sitting in the ad man’s office makes us ask: Is Peggy moving up in the world?

Can Pete Campbell and Ted Chaugh start fresh in L.A.? Pete will definitely be better off with nearly 3,000 miles between him and Bob Benson! Not to mention leaving behind the drama surrounding his marriage, affair and missing mom. On the other hand, Ted may be able to salvage his marriage by putting some distance between him and Peggy.

Will Bob Benson be up to his old tricks? Bob is one of the most manipulative characters “Mad Men” has seen… and that’s saying a lot. He seemed to really have it out for Pete, but with his competition all the way in L.A., will Bob start in on someone else?

How will Joan Harris' role expand? We saw Joan take a chance with Avon in Season 6, and it nearly exploded in her face. With so much movement in the office, can she expand her role to include operations and accounts? On the personal side, Joan invited Roger over for Thanksgiving dinner. Does that mean she’s ready to let him into their son Kevin’s life for good? Will there be any resolution with her estranged husband Greg?

Where will Roger Sterling go from here? He was the office player last season, with no real responsibilities. With Don out of the picture, will Roger have to step up?

It can't be as bad as last season right? RIGHT?

Kendall Jenner wears a large hoop ring in her nose while attending the Lacoste Beautiful Desert Pool Party held during day three of weekend one of the 2014 Coachella Music Festival on Sunday (April 13) in Thermal, Calif.

The 18-year-old reality star and budding model’s nose ring had a chain that connected it to her right ear as well.

This isn’t the first interesting outfit choice for Kendall during her weekend at Coachella. She covered her face in a row of jewels the day before while checking out the music scene with her younger sister Kylie Jenner.

The Show That Started It All Is Back! Real Housewives Of Orange County Returns For A 9th Season!

0

There are some significant changes that you are going to get here almost straight out of the gate when it comes to the cast. Alexis Bellino, Gretchen Rossi, and Lydia McLaughlin are all gone from the cast, and have been replaced with Danielle Gregorio, Shannon Beador, and Lizzie Rovsek.

“In the season opener, Vicki finds her life in turmoil once again, as her divorce from Donn is finalized and she struggles to move forward with Brooks after his controversial clash with Briana at last season’s reunion. Newcomer Shannon gives Heather a peek into her quirky lifestyle choices.

Heather invites party girls Vicki and Tamra for a girls-only weekend trip to Honolulu following her guest role on ‘Hawaii Five-O,’ but tensions arise when the dynamic duo are met with resistance when they try to get Heather to lose the fancy pants.”

We’ve missed this version of the show, mostly because we have long found it to be one of the silliest of the franchise. We don’t care so much for watching the personal crises and we really don’t care for when things can violent or verbally abusive. Some of the funniest moments in history have happened in Orange County, and while there are still occasions where you want to remind these women that sometimes they are fighting over petty things, these are balanced out with ones.

Does Tamra miss Gretchen, Alexis and Lydia!

The outspoken housewife made an appearance on KTLA and during the course of her interview revealed whether she misses the three women who are no longer part of the show.

When the interviewer brought up the departures of Gretchen, Alexis and Lydia, Tamra joked that she ran them out of Orange County. When she was asked whether she misses them, Tamra hesitated before saying she would for a couple of them but then concluded with a resounding no.

Tamra's response was not surprising when it came to Gretchen and Alexis. Tamra and Alexis never got along on the show as Tamra found her superficial and fake. Tamra even called Alexis "Jesus Jugs" at one of the reunion shows. As for Tamra and Gretchen, the two finally developed a friendship early last season after battling it out for years but the friendship unraveled towards the end of the season. Tamra once admitted that the friendship started unraveling after Gretchen proposed to Slade Smiley but didn't invite any of the housewives to her engagement party.

As for Lydia, it seems that Tamra just didn't have enough time with her to develop a real connection since Lydia departed after only one season. She said that she decided to leave because she wanted to concentrate on other business opportunities and expand her family. It was just announced that she and husband Doug are expecting a third child.

Shannon Talks Passing Vicki's Test!

Wetpaint Entertainment caught up with Shannon and spilled how she approached the show as a super-fan, how she won over OC OG Vicki, and what that face-off with Heather was all about.

Wetpaint Entertainment: Welcome to the show! What made you decide to join RHOC?
I had the same home builder that Heather Dubrow has. I thought it would be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to have snippets of my life filmed and be able to watch them back. You’re able to see what you do well and what you need to improve on. How often do people get the chance to watch their lives played back to them?

It appears in the trailer that you and Vicki develop a friendship this season.

Vicki and I definitely get along. I didn’t honestly think of it that way, as I’m not the type to compete in friendships. Vicki’s a very busy woman, as well, so she’s not going to sit on the phone and chitchat with me five times a day, either. Vicki doesn’t like change; she says that all the time on the show. So she has little tests for people. I don’t know if there was clearly a test for me, but looking back I think there’s things she did to see how I would react. I think I clearly passed.

It looks like there’s an incident that goes down between you and Heather this season.

I had portrayed myself as my true, uncensored, and honest person. If the cameras were rolling right now, you would see no difference. I’m not insinuating this about Heather, but I think there are certain people on the show that vacillate between two types of people. People can create stories in their minds and convince themselves that really happened, but the cameras don’t lie. I don’t argue with women, but if somebody tries to betray me or tries to make me believe that I did something I didn’t do, I will stand up for myself.

Lizzie Talks Bonding With Tamra!

Wetpaint Entertainment spoke exclusively with newbie Lizzie to get her take on what we can expect in Season 9. Here, she dishes on the cast member that insulted her, what she thinks of Vicki Gunvalson’s boyfriend Brooks, and who’s cattier: the Housewives or her fellow pageant girls.

Wetpaint Entertainment: What made you decide to sign on for the show?

Lizzie Rovsek: I was approached, so it wasn’t something I went out looking for. I was a little hesitant at first, but then I thought that maybe things happen for a reason. I decided that this could be a really fun adventure.

Having watched the show beforehand, did you have expectations for the other cast members before meeting them?

Yea. There were certain women that I thought that I would really like at first. I found that the one woman that I thought I would really hit it off with was really insulting when I met her. And then there was another Housewife that I was kind of warned against, and I ended up hitting it off with her right from the beginning!

Which Housewife surprised you the most?

I had seen the show before, so I had an idea of what most of them were like. In the beginning, Tamra and I really hit it off, and I had a lot of fun with her. I didn’t know if she would like me, since she’s been the one fighting on the show a lot. We actually hit it off and had fun together.

Thomas Says He's Falling For Kathryn!

It would be hard to beat last week's episode of Southern Charm, but they're giving it a shot.

After the world's worst dinner party in which Thomas Ravenel talked about the love of his life in front of his new girlfriend Kathryn Dennis, Craig Conover that lashed out at Dennis. He called her out for sleeping for three people at the table. We know she slept with Shep Rose and Ravenel clearly but the third one was still up in the air. However, after last week's episode of Watch What Happens Live where Ravenel, Rose and Cameran Eubanks appeared, an exclusive clip revealed that Whitney Suder-Smith confessed to hooking up with Dennis.

Dennis also stormed out on Ravenel last season because he didn't stick up for her but on this week's episode it looks like she has forgiven him, the question is, will he forgive her for sleeping with a close friend of his?

A dark comedy about a gay couple trying to stay together through drunken outbursts, double standards and dirty deeds!

Season one of "EastSiders: The Series" left Cal and Thom uncertain of their future together. All the lies were out in the open and they were splitting up the Christmas ornaments, but they couldn’t deny their feelings for each other. Is being in love enough of a reason to be together?

“EastSiders” launched last year to a lot of love from fans and critics alike, with Entertainment Weekly calling the show “funny and heartbreaking” and After Elton praising it as “sharp, well-written and acted.” We won Best Web Drama at the 2013 LA Weekly Awards, Best Ensemble at the Indie Series Awards and were nominated for a Satellite Award from the International Press Academy, among numerous other accolades, but the most rewarding part has been getting to interact with the fans of the show. If it wasn't for the support of amazing people like you we wouldn’t have been able to make "EastSiders" in the first place.

The entire cast is excited to return for a second season: Van Hansis (Three time Daytime Emmy Nominations for As the World Turns), series creator Kit Williamson (Mad Men), Matthew McKelligon (Int. Leather Bar, You’re Killing Me), John Halbach (Wallflowers) and Constance Wu (Browsers, Sound of My Voice), as well as our amazing guest stars Sean Maher (Firefly), Stephen Guarino (Happy Endings), Brea Grant (Heroes, Dexter) and Traci Lords (Cry Baby, Zach and Miri Make a Porno).

We’ll also be offering backers an exclusive first look at some of the amazing things we have planned for season two, including an introduction to our new cast members Satya Bhabha (New Girl, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World), Adam Bucci (10 Year Plan), Vera Miao (Best Friends Forever) and Willam Belli (Nip/Tuck, Rupaul's Drag Race).

Ice Cube Feels "Robbed" After Losing to Paul Walker at MTV Movie Awards, Blames "Sympathy" Votes

0
0

Ice Cube isn't too happy that Paul Walker and his Fast & Furious 6 costar Vin Diesel won the Best Onscreen Duo at last night's 2014 MTV Movie Awards.

The rapper turned actor says the late star shouldn't have won posthumously and insists he and Kevin Hart should have taken home the trophy for their performances in Ride Along.
"We was robbed," Ice Cube told USA Today. "Shame on you, MTV."
Ice Cube says Walker, who died in a car crash back in November, only won out of "sympathy."

"We had the best chemistry of everybody nominated, for us not to win was crazy," Ice Cube told the newspaper of himself and Hart. "We were the best onscreen duo, period."
"They should have gave it to him before he passed away," Ice Cube added of Walker's win.

Walker's posthumous win isn't the only thing that has the hip-hop star peeved.

Ice Cube also dissed last night's MTV Movie Awards by leaving mid-show.
"I just wasn't into it," he said. "I have been going in and out of these things for 25 years. If you ain't into it, why torture yourself? As soon as you get bored, get up and leave."

Which book was more contested than 50 Shades of Grey?

0
0

Take a second to think about what controversial books you heard a lot about within the past year. 50 Shades of Grey? The Hunger Games? Possibly The Perks of Being a Wallflower?

Those books all made the American Library Association’s annual list of Top Ten Most Challenged Books — but lost the top spot to Captain Underpants. Ya know, the illustrated book for elementary schoolers that features a superhero who goes without pants.

This is the second year that Captain Underpants tops the list. According to the ALA, they received the majority of complaints from parents, teachers and librarians because of the picture book’s “offensive language” and “mature subject matter.” Dav Pilkey, who created the series in the late 1990s, said he continues to be perplexed by the controversy.

“[It's surprising] that a series with no sex, no nudity, no drugs, no profanity and no more violence than a Superman cartoon has caused such an uproar,” Dav said in a statement released by his published, Scholastic Books. “Of course, only a tiny percentage of adults are complaining. Kids love the books, and fortunately most parents and educators do, too.”

The American Library Association defined a challenge as a “formal, written complaint filed with a library or school requesting that a book or other material be restricted or removed because of its content or appropriateness.” The office received 307 challenges last year, which was down from 464 challenges in 2012.

“The number is low this year,” Barbara Jones, who runs the ALA’s Office for Intellectual Freedom, told The Associated Press. “We’d like to think it’s because people finally understand that pulling a book from their shelves isn’t going to solve the problem they’re worried about it. But it could be an anomaly.”

The complete list from the ALA includes: The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie, Fifty Shades of Grey by E.L. James, The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, A Bad Boy Can Be Good for A Girl by Tanya Lee Stone, Looking for Alaska by John Green, The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky, Bless Me Ultima by Rudolfo Anaya and the Bone series by Jeff Smith.

Paul Walker Remembered With Touching MTV Movie Awards Tribute

The actor is remembered as much for his philanthropy and spirit as his performances.

After a heartfelt and tear-inducing introduction by longtime "Fast & Furious" costar Jordana Brewster, actor Paul Walker was remembered at the 2014 MTV Movie Awards with a moving montage of his most memorable movie roles, including a short clip of his 2002 Golden Popcorn win for Best On-Screen Team.

"He was humble. He thought about others," Jordana said, referencing many of his philanthropic endeavors, including tagging great white sharks for research purposes. "He never asked for credit or glory. He was just a really good guy."

Vin Diesel narrated the montage video, which featured clips from Walker's roles in films like "Varsity Blues,""Pleasantville" and multiple movies in the "Fast & Furious" franchise. It also featured photos and video from Walker's philanthropic work, particularly the foundation he started, Reaching Out WorldWide (ROWW), which provides disaster relief to areas devastated by storms and other natural disasters.

"The world saw his magic onscreen," Diesel said. "Yet I wish the world could have seen how special a brother he was."

Walker died November 30, 2013, in a high-speed car crash in Santa Clarita, California.

You can get information on donating to ROWW in Walker's memory at MTV Act.

Joe Biden Plugs Clinique on The Rachael Ray Show

Yesterday, on The Rachael Ray Show, Vice-President Joe Biden let the talk-show host and her audience in on a very important secret—a beauty secret, that is. When prompted by Ray with “I have to ask you, you have the most glowing, perfect skin of any person I’ve ever seen. I really want to know what moisturizer you use. I love moisturizers! My husband is a moisturizer, as well. Would you tell me what moisturizer you use?," Biden responded with, “Well, on Jill’s instructions about five years ago, she said I should use Clinique, and there’s a men’s Clinique that adds an S.P.F. 20. She was worried about my face, so I do whatever Jill tells me.”

Mind blown. Not only does Biden use moisturizer, but he cares about S.P.F.! Does Jill Biden give President Obama tips like this? If so, should an eye cream be in the rotation, as well?

Kanye West & Common Create 20,000 Jobs For Chicago Youth

0
0

At a press conference held last Wednesday, rapper Common announced that his foundation has joined forces with Kanye West’s company DONDA House Inc. along with the Chicago Urban League to create over 20,000 jobs for the youth of Chicago.

After a studied revealed that 92% of black teens in Chicago are unemployed, Common hopes that these jobs will provide black youth with enough opportunity to detour them from a life of crime.

“Obviously, one of the biggest reasons our kids are going through what they’re going through is because of poverty. I was doing an event in the neighborhood and there were some kids from Englewood and I said, ‘Man, what do y’all really need? What’s gonna stop this?’ And they were like, ‘We need money. Man, if we could work.’ They want a chance,” said rapper Common.

And these won’t just be temporary jobs that programs like After School Matters offer.

“It’s one thing to provide summer jobs for these kids, but we’re trying to provide year-round jobs,” said Andrea Zopp, CEO of the Chicago Urban League. “We’ve had hearings and the kids have told us that they need jobs year-round.”

The initiative will also bring a musical festival that will act as a yearly fundraiser to raise money for the jobs and other programs. It will be held on September 20-21 behind the museum of science and industry in Hyde Park. No word yet on line-up for the festival but the organizers is hoping to pull a few big names from the Chi.

The Winter Soldier Writers Talks about Marvel and Samuel L. Jackson Talks Avengers 2

0
0

Samuel L. Jackson, who plays Nick Fury in “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” hinted that he might appear in “Avengers: Age of Ultron” when it comes out next year.

“Avengers 2 is so huge, and having seen the tag, I don’t know there’s a real space for Nick in that scenario because everything is so extraordinary,” Jackson told BuzzFeed.

“When you come down to it, Nick’s an ordinary guy who knows how to bend extraordinary people to his will. The [Avengers sequel] is not about Nick and what S.H.I.E.L.D. is going through. We’re going to skip over him in an interesting sort of way.”

Jackson indicated that his character will remain in hiding for “Age of Ultron.”

He added: “Don’t get me wrong, I’ll show up, but it’s not to be an effective part of the plot or the resolution of the plot from [The Winter Soldier].”

“Age of Ultron” is slated for release in May 2015.

“Nick is retreating back to the shadow world,” Jackson said of Fury. “It’s this place that he and Natasha [Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow] refer to a lot, and it makes him a much more interesting character who won’t be instantly recognizable because of that.”

In a competing superhero franchise, the wisecracking sidekick might have summed up “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” with a well-timed “Holy meta-narrative, Batman!”

Drafting the sequel to 2011′s hit comic book movie adaptation “Captain America: The First Avenger,” screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely faced challenges above and beyond delivering the kind of slam-bang action-adventure associated with a nearly unstoppable super soldier dressed in star-spangled fatigues.

“Cap 2″ (as the project became known) needed to fit squarely into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That is, into a narrative continuum established by the movie’s production company Marvel Studios where costumed heroes such as Thor, Iron Man, Hawkeye and the Hulk have turned up in one another’s tent-pole movies since 2008.

PHOTOS: ‘Captain America’ stars walk the red carpet

Encompassing future films and TV shows whose plot lines and outcomes are all, to varying degrees, contingent on what happens in “Cap 2,” the cinematic universe has already been broadly plotted out through 2028.

Hence, a more complicated mandate for the “Winter Soldier” writers.

“You have to think, ‘Is Iron Man going to cover this territory?’” explained Markus, the more expansive of the two. “We had Hawkeye in ‘Cap 2′ for a while, but it was becoming arbitrary that he was in it. Eight or nine movies in, a lot of ideas have already played out on screen. You gotta dig deeper.”

On the blockbuster heels of “Marvel’s The Avengers” — 2012′s highest-grossing film, which features Captain America among a dream team of superheroes battling to save Earth — McFeely and Markus’ deep dig into the Marvel universe paid dividends with “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” arriving as the most successful April movie opening of all time. The $170-million sequel topped box-office charts for a second consecutive week, beating out the animated movie “Rio 2′s” theatrical debut and grossing more than $159 million in its first 10 days of domestic release. It’s also cruised past $475 million worldwide, having opened in 32 markets internationally a week before its U.S. premiere.

“Our good guy’s on the run for half the movie, he doesn’t know from whom or why,” McFeely said. “He figures out why. Then he can go on offense. That’s the screenwriting thing it took us watching ‘Three Days of the Condor’ four times to figure out.”

The “screenwriting thing,” however, was hardly the writers’ original aim. Now both 44, Markus and McFeely met at UC Davis 20 years ago where both were matriculated as masters candidates in fiction writing and experienced something like a “Eureka!” moment while watching basic cable. The experience led them to weigh the Great American Novel against the siren song of Hollywood.

“We were watching ‘Baywatch,’ and it occurred to us, ‘Somebody wrote this!’” McFeely recalled.

“Somebody got paid for that,” continued Markus. “That’s a writing job!”

After years of churning out “spec” scripts and holding down low-level production jobs, the duo finally broke through with the 2004 biopic “The Life and Death of Peter Sellers” starring Geoffrey Rush. On the strength of that film’s characterizations, McFeely and Markus were hired to tackle the big-budget adaptation of C.S. Lewis’ kids-lit classic “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” (as well as its two sequels).

“We didn’t get the job because of our love of epic battles,” Markus said. “We’re good at making humans believable in a ridiculous situation. And it has spun from there.”

After 2010′s “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Dawn Trader,” the two didn’t work for a solid year, turning down a number of YA-skewing fantasy films — including the blockbuster first installment of “The Hunger Games” — for fear of being pigeonholed. But now, with an eclectic filmography that includes three hit superhero movies as well as “Pain & Gain” (last year’s crime comedy about bodybuilder criminals starring Mark Wahlberg and directed by Michael Bay), McFeely and Markus are past being categorized as one-trick ponies.

Instead, they find themselves in an enviable position as architects of the Marvel cinematic universe.

“We’re all just playing in the Marvel sandbox. The people that stay in that sandbox have the most fun and can play well with others. They do that incredibly well,” Marvel chief Feige said. “Chris and Steve are as in the loop as anyone across all the films because we value their input. They’ve read most of the drafts of all the films that are in production or going into production. That helps inform the films they’re working on. They also happen to have an affinity for our universe and our source material.”

Testament to the studio’s faith in McFeely and Markus sat in an overstuffed folder on a coffee table in the writers room: a jumble of pages for “Captain America 3,” the next film they’ve been hired to write, due out in May 2016.

Never mind that the release date pits “Cap 3″ against one of the most eagerly awaited movies in recent fanboy memory — Warner Bros.’ untitled Batman-Superman project — which was moved into the coveted date a month ago, setting up a summer superhero smackdown bound to captivate Hollywood watchers for years. Rather than sweat the competition, though, the writers have chosen to stay true to their mandate: upholding the Marvel meta-narrative.

“The attraction of the whole thing is this interlocking universe,” said Markus. “There is an inherent fascination to the way this cloud of story lines works. It’s the reason the comics work. And the genius of getting this project off the ground is, they knew from early on —”

McFeely cut in: “— that the sum is greater than its parts.”

The bandit walked into a high-end jewelry store in Manhattan that caters to celebrities and made off with valuables worn by Hollywood A-listers, among them Selena Gomez.
Police said the brazen thief – whom they’re very interested in finding -- tied up a store employee and then stole about $54,000 worth of jewelry from inside the Margo Manhattan store on Friday.
The thief, police say, entered the store in the early afternoon and asked to see some jewelry.
They say he then grabbed the 53-year-old woman by the neck, forced her into the back room and tied her up.
Video surveillance shows the man removing items from a display case. Police say he also took valuables from the back room. The items he stole included jewelry Beyoncé wore for her “visual album” released last year, and “Passion Rings” made for Selena Gomez, according to The New York Post.
On its website, the company shows one of its necklaces being worn by singer Beyoncé. Another shows one being worn by actress Mischa Barton.
“The man told her to stay quiet and she did,” Margo Manhattan said, according to The New York Post.
Manhattan added that she tells her staff to turn over valuables a thief may demand during a robbery.
“I’d rather them get the jewelry than have them hurt anyone,” she said. “Their safety is more important. I can replace the jewelry but I can’t replace their life.”
