Nelson Mandela in critical condition

Nelson Mandela was in critical condition Sunday after a deterioration in his health, and doctors "are doing everything possible'' for him, South Africa's government said.

The office of President Jacob Zuma said that on Sunday evening the president had visited Mandela, the former president of the country who was imprisoned for nearly three decades as he battled the country's apartheid system of racial separatism.

Zuma's office said he was informed by Mandela's doctors that his condition had become critical in the past 24 hours.

Mandela, 94, has been in intensive care for more than two weeks. He was hospitalized on June 8 for what the government said was a recurring lung infection.

"The doctors are doing everything possible to get his condition to improve and are ensuring that Madiba is well-looked after and is comfortable,'' Zuma said in a statement. "He is in good hands."

Madiba is Mandela's tribal nickname.

Zuma visited Mandela along with ANC Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa visited Mandela. Zuma also met Graca Machel, Mandela's wife, at the hospital and discussed the former leader's condition, according to the statement.

Zuma appealed to South Africans and the rest of the world to pray for Mandela, his family and his medical team. Mandela turns 95 on July 18.

On Saturday, it was reported that the ambulance carrying Mandela to the hospital June 8 broke down while he was on board, requiring that he be moved to a second vehicle. Zuma said he had been assured "all care was taken to ensure his medical condition was not compromised.''

"There were seven doctors in the convoy who were in full control of the situation throughout the period. He had expert medical care. The fully equipped military ICU ambulance had a full complement of specialist medical staff including intensive care specialists and ICU nurses. The doctors also dismissed the media reports that Madiba suffered cardiac arrest. There is no truth at all in that report," Zuma said in a statement released by spokesman Mac Maharaj.

Mandela became South Africa's first black president after the end of apartheid in 1994. He retired from public life in 2004 and has rarely been seen at official events since. He has been seen around the world as a leader of the movement for human rights and reconciliation.

Introducing: Unlocking the Truth

If you've been around the Internet for a minute, you've probably heard of Unlocking the Truth.

Friends-from-practically-birth Malcolm Brickhouse and Jarad Dawkins formed their first metal band Tears of Blood in 2007, when they were both five years old.

Now in the 6th grade, the Flatbush, Brooklyn duo have been joined by "childhood friend" Alec Atkins on bass to unleash Unlocking the Truth on unsuspecting New Yorkers who don't expect 12-year-olds to rock this hard.

Despite their success both online and off, the band members still suffer the daily taunts of classmates who bully them about their taste in music and personal style.

"I know a lot of people doubt me," Malcolm tells The Avant/Garde Diaries. "But then I really don't listen to those people, because I know I'm going to be famous anyway."

And besides, Jarad knows exactly what will become of the haters: "Now I'm writing a book. The book is about people who are being bullied in school and they joined a band, and they have became rich and famous, and they toured all over the world. And people that judged them, they have became homeless. And it's, like, based on a true story."

These little dudes are killing it. Hope they get more attention.

'Mad Men' creator: Don't hate Don Draper

$

'Mad Men' creator Matthew Weiner says his central character, who is becoming maddening to some fans, is not the devil.

If nothing else, AMC's "Mad Men" has been the deliberate and artful chronicle of the psychological undressing of the secretive Don Draper. In its current season, the drama laid the character even more bare when he was caught with another woman — and with his pants down — by his 14-year-old daughter.

The excruciating moment, a culmination of self-imposed humiliations in a season awash in shame for the Emmy Award-winning show's central character, prompted a fresh round of howling at the depraved depths of its charismatic antihero. He's a terrible father. He's a monster. He's the devil.

But Don Draper is none of those things, counters the show's creator Matthew Weiner, who after Sunday's season finale will only have 13 episodes left to tell the troubled ad executive's tale. Don, he says, is 1968.

"People expect Don to be out of touch, but given society's identity crisis in 1968, he's never been more in touch," said Weiner, who spent much of this season exploring the tumult of one of the nation's most painful and divisive years. "It's like the entire world is in a state that Don is in all the time — the id has overtaken the culture."

It was a state some critics found wearisome this season, particularly when it came to Draper. While there were new examples of his morally reprehensible behavior, the most common complaint among many of the show's devoted legions of episode recappers and social media commentators was they'd had enough. The New Yorker's television critic Emily Nussbaum wrote midseason that "Don, instead of being the show's engine, has become its anchor — heavy, even in the sixties sense."

In an interview at his Los Angeles Center Studios office earlier this week, Weiner talked about his penultimate season and the critical reaction to it, as well as elaborating on some of the key narrative developments. The 47-year-old show runner, famously guarded about revealing plot details, also hinted at what might lie ahead for his leading man.

If last season was about the agency managing with unexpected success, this season was about Don's bloodier battles with familiar problems, said Weiner. Rather than being merely repetitive, Don's "self-destructive acts were amped up exponentially," something that fit with the turbulent year of 1968, added Weiner. The gloom and doom was also there to open the door to the possibility of growth.

In speaking with him about the show, Weiner says people have been complimentary, but he acknowledged it could be different in the loud and echoing canyons of social media.

"I can't control what they say," said Weiner. "The only thing that has been consistent through the history of the show is from Episode 2 on, the show is never as good as it used to be. I am both completely thrilled there is so much conversation, but also I'm really bored of that conversation."

Moreover, Twitter and social media commentators are like "baseball fans who scream at the players, 'You're nothing, you're blah blah blah.' It's a one-way conversation that empowers powerless people who are trying to look smart," he added. "There are so many derogatory things you could say about them, most importantly, where is your show?"

But Weiner quickly made a bow to the rising new medium favored by the culture's nattering nabobs of negativism. "The success of our show is completely tied to whatever happened to television and the Internet and social media in the last seven years," he said.

Once derided for small ratings of a couple million viewers or less in its early seasons, "Mad Men" today commands a combined and highly prized audience of affluent, well-educated viewers that hovers between 8 million and 10 million per episode. Though this season's official Nielsen average per episode is a modest 2.5 million viewers, that doesn't take into account (unfairly, many argue) a host of other entertainment platforms, including all DVRs, video on demand, iTunes and others that would greatly increase that figure.

This season those viewers witnessed Don's life deteriorate on every front. He's having an affair with a woman in his building, a friend's wife. He sours a lucrative public offering at work, and then he sets out to destroy a onetime competitor, Ted Chaough, who has become a firm partner. He's drinking screwdrivers for breakfast and vomiting at funerals.

And worst of all, his already rocky relationship with his daughter, played by Kiernan Shipka, is shattered after she walks in on Don making love with his neighbor's wife.

"One of the things I'm proudest of about the show is that it is very honest about childhood," said Weiner. "A lot of things that happen to her or that happen to other kids on the show are collected from real people's childhoods, either from writers in the room or mine personally."

Almost as mysterious as Don Draper is the new character Bob Benson, played by James Wolk. A recent episode shocked many viewers when Benson, a smiling handsome ad executive, appeared to proposition Pete Campbell in his office with a now famous brushing of the knees. To many, it implied a gay relationship.

"Honestly, Bob is in love with Pete," said Weiner. "I don't know that he's gay. He's just in love with Pete."

"It was one of the most beautiful love proposals we've ever had on the show," he continued. "Pete has everything Bob wants. Bob is someone like Don that grew up on the outskirts of things and had a fantasy of who he wanted to be, and Pete really is that person."

It's hard to conceive of a happy ending for the drama that put AMC on the cultural map in 2007 and is still enormously influential. After all, the opening credits depict an ad man falling to his doom, as he plummets down the building he worked so hard to climb.

As usual, Weiner won't hint at what's ahead next season. But he was willing to answer a fundamental question at the heart of the show that will bear on the narrative end for Don — can people change in a meaningful and positive way?

"I don't know," said Weiner. "It's the eternal question. It's as important to me as what is the meaning of life. I don't think it's easy, but I guess I think it's possible."

Britney fans RAGE with rumors of Dr.Luke and co. working on album 8; producers respond

It all started innocently enough with Flop.i.am's right hand man Jean Baptiste giving the fans a preview of next week's recording session for Britney's album:

This sent the fans into a tizzy considering Ammo & Savan are a part of Dr. Luke's team & their past lackluster, more pop leaning production & writing credits: Drop Dead Beautiful, Ooh La La, & If U Seek Amy.

Fans responded the only way they know how by harassing these producers on twitter:

Word got back to Jean Baptiste about the commotion his news had caused fans and he decided naively to speak up in defense of Dr.Luke and was again met with resistance and displeasure from fans:

Now a handful of fans are setting up ragey yet hilarious twitter campaigns against Britney's management team because of this news, their shameless promotion of other artists they manage on her twitter account and their overall incompetency:

The Secrets Behind Lucy Liu’s Perfect Hair

$

Every time we see a photo of Lucy Liu‘s hair, we find ourselves suffering from major tress envy. And (if you can believe it) it’s even more stunning in person.

Luckily for us, the actress was happy to share how she keeps her locks so healthy. As it turns out, it’s a three-step process.

“I try to get a trim every month, drink a ton of water, and use a lot of Moroccanoil products,” the actress told PEOPLE at the Girl Scouts’ and Nestle’s National Treasure Trade kick-off in N.Y.C. “They repair anything that’s going on.”

And when temperatures heat up, Liu combats frizz with a sleek braid.

“I love biking around in the city in the summer in a braid,” she shared. “It’s easier than a ponytail, especially when you have to put a helmet on.”

Speaking of braids, we’re still trying to recreate that show-stopping fishtail plait she wore to the Golden Globes in January, a look that Liu loved just as must as we did. (Though she admits of that one: “The reaction was 50/50. People loved it or they didn’t.”)

Also on her best-ever red carpet list? “That Versace metal gown from the Emmys was just unbelievable,” she said. “It was ergonomically designed so it was comfortable even though it looked really heavy.”

And though Liu loves playing the red-carpet glamour girl, she also gets a kick out of the laid-back looks on the set of her CBS hit Elementary where she plays Sherlock Holmes’ sidekick Joan Watson.

“Joan’s style is really comfortable and casual,” she shares. “I think one thing we wanted to do was make sure she wasn’t too manicured.”

And if she could raid any other TV character’s closet, who would it be?

“Julianna Margulies in The Good Wife and Kerry Washington. I love the style on Scandal,” she says. “There’s a power to how they dress and I like that. They’re so put together. They are so high-fashion and Joan is not high-fashion.”

New Q&A with Jeff Davis on the Teen Wolf tumblr

Jeff Davis answered fan questions.
Some of the more informative/less stupid ones under the cut!

will we see derek/ms. blake scenes tomorrow?
yes!

are we going to see more of erica?
yep! you didn’t think we’d just leave her a body in a closet, did you?

are there going to be more virgin sacrifices?
very good question. and something that has stiles quite worried at the beginning of tomorrow night’s episode.

hey jeff! i ask this every time, but i really only have one question: are peter and chris ever going to have any interaction?! a hello would suffice. hell, a glare would suffice.
possibly.

yo so does isaac want to get it in with everyone or what
well, he is a teenager.

any hope for lydia and peter being together in the future?
a scene? yes.
(vom)

in which episode(s) do we get to delve into danny and ethan's "interactions"?
tomorrow night.

will lydia and allison ever share a kiss?
if it was right for the story…

where is grandpa argent?! :0
lurking.

will we find out why cora didn’t try to find derek over the past 6-7 years?
you understand more details tomorrow night.

will lyida have any life-threatening scenes?
more than one unfortunately as she develops her “talent.”

will there be a love intrest for isaac or stiles this season?
yes to one. possibly both.

will stiles be one of the virgin targets?
that question is answered tomorrow night.

is papa stilinski going to finally learn about everything? i can only assume that everything would be 90% easier with him on their side.
that question is raised in the episode we’re cutting right now. there is a scene between scott and stiles where they argue about whether he’s safer not knowing or knowing.

is there another creature amongst beacon hills? (other than wolves & alphas)
another villain yes. but another creature? you’ll have to wait and see.

what episode will we find out what is going on with lydia?

someone will put a name to it this season. but i’m not saying which episode.

why was stiles so mad at lydia for calling the cops before she called him? i've seen a few different interpretations but i'd like to get the word of god reason!
not mad so much as frustrated. stiles wants to be the first on the scene. and he wants lydia to trust him.
(this is my awkwardly phrased question)

hey jeff! are we ever going to see a disabled character who isn't evil? it's getting kind of disappointing... :(
that is something we should definitely try for. thanks for the suggestion!

are ever get to meet boyd or erica's family?
a member of boyd’s family, yes.

where does isaac live?! is he homeless?
he lives with derek.

will somebody die tomorrow?
yep.

how big is beacon hills? is it a small town or like a small city?
i compare it to the town i grew up, milford, ct. it’s a regular suburban town but you can get to the city pretty fast. new haven was only five minutes away. we imagine derek’s loft to be in a downtown la or new haven type of city.

okay so witches. real or no? if they are, are they more like buffy witches, or charmed witches?
no witches on teen wolf. at least not this season.

will we ever get a lesbian character who lives for more than 1 episode?
you just did. played by the very talented zelda williams. i’m hoping to bring her back.

does cora know that peter killed laura?
yep.

is awesome but unnamed chick from episode one ms morrell's sister? is awesome but unnamed chick alive? will awesome but unnamed chick ever get a name?
no. possibly. yes.

is lydia psychic? or does she have some sort of innate spark, like stiles does? does that factor into why peter used her to come back to life or was that just him seeing an opportunity and taking it?
not psychic.

he actually answered my question :o

Amy Winehouse died of bulimia and not from drug abuse, says brother

Amy Winehouse’s older brother Alex has claimed that it was an eating disorder and not her addictions that killed the singer two years ago.

In his first full-length interview, the 33-year-old told the Observer Magazine that his sister’s long battle with bulimia “left her weaker, and more susceptible,” the Guardian reported.

He said that she would have died eventually, the way she was going, but what really killed her was the bulimia.

An inquest recorded a verdict of misadventure after finding that she had 416mg of alcohol per decilitre in her blood – more than five times the legal drink-drive limit and enough to make her comatose and depress her respiratory system.

According to her brother, who was speaking to mark the opening of an exhibition dedicated to his sister’s life at the Jewish Museum in Camden, north London, her system had been fatally weakened by years of bulimia, a disease in which bouts of extreme overeating are followed by depression and self-induced vomiting.

He added that had she not have had an eating disorder, she would have been physically stronger.

He revealed that Amy had developed bulimia in her late teens and had never shaken off the illness.

Lifetime costume director talks recreating Anna Nicole Smith's flawlessness

$
0
0

Five years after her death, Anna Nicole Smith (née Vickie Lynn Hogan) is getting the Lifetime treatment. Agnes Bruckner stars as Smith in Anna Nicole, the rags-to-riches tale of “a pretty, but plain girl growing up in small town Texas” who “transformed herself though sheer willpower” into a pseudo-celebrity whose demise was a tragic end to a tragic story.

Costume designer Deborah Everton (whose credits include The Craft, Star Trek: First Contact, and Dick) was tasked with outfitting Bruckner — and her pneumatic prosthetics — in a wardrobe befitting Anna Nicole. Everton sat down with EW to explain how she re-created Smith’s signature looks, describe the challenges of dressing the Playboy model’s Amazonian figure, and dispel the myth that the Guess Girl was a Wal-Mart shopper.

“I wanted her wardrobe to be fun for the audience to look at. I didn’t want to exploit people’s expectations,” Everton says of using costumes to bring levity to the otherwise heavy biopic. “I showed her progression as she learned about style and fashion. There was a time when she came into money and wasn’t educated yet as to what was tasteful and beautiful. Her look tended to be, I don’t want to say gaudy, but ‘more is more.’ She learned over the course of her brief life how to edit [her clothes], so that’s what I did.”

Private Dancer
When it came to scenes depicting Anna Nicole’s career as a stripper, Everton said she toned things down in order to avoid over-exposure. “We kept Agnes a lot more covered [than Anna would have been]. I dressed her in everything from Victoria’s Secret to La Perla. If it looked pretty and feminine and had a certain wow factor, I didn’t care where it came from,” the costume designer remembers. Was Bruckner shy about taking off her clothes? “She was game. She went for it, but she has nothing to hide. She has a beautiful figure and gorgeous skin.” this Lifetime bitch aint got nothing on Anna

Who’s That Guess Girl?
After posing for Playboy, Smith gained wider fame when she replaced Claudia Schiffer as the face of the Guess clothing label.“I [re-created] most of the Guess looks in our workshop because those items aren’t available anymore,” says Everton. “Anna’s association with Guess helped educate her to not wear a whole store at one time. It upped her fashion intelligence. From that point on in the film, you see her tastes evolve.”
Pumped Up
“Agnes is the jeans and T-shirt girl, not the high-heels and push-up bra type. It was amazing the transformation she went through. When she walked in as [Anna], I didn’t even recognize her,” Everton says of Bruckner’s transformation. The most obvious detail of the actress’ Anna Nicole look? “They had several pairs of fake breasts they would put on her, but I would say 80 percent of the time, the breasts were built up in [the wardrobe] department using padded bras and chicken cutlets. Taking tips from Courtney Stodden It was a lot of ‘How padded can we get her?’

It Costs A Lot to Look This Cheap
“Anna Nicole actually bought beautiful clothing. She put it together a little eccentrically, but if you break it down and look at each item she wore… She liked to buy clothes, that’s for sure,” Everton says of Smith’s aesthetic. ”People say, ‘Oh, she was a Playboy model,’ but she shopped at Neiman Marcus. She wasn’t a Wal-Mart girl at all. People made up their minds before they got to know her.”

Golden Girl
“There’s a gold lame Ralph Lauren dress that Anna wears in the South of France when [Guess co-founder] Georges Marciano introduces her to European society. She makes an entrance,” recalls Everton, who had just one week to prep for the project, which included 90 costume changes for Bruckner alone. “I wanted the look of a Hollywood goddess, so I selected this dress because [it reminded me] of an Oscar. She really does look like a beautiful statue.”

Anna Nicole premieres on Lifetime June 29.
