Exclusive First Look: RuPaul shantays onto Happy Endings

0
0

If you've been watching ABC's Happy Endings-- hold up, if you haven't been watching it, get off this page right now and actually watch it or we can't be friends anymore.

That's better.

You might have noticed that Max (Adam Pally) on Happy Endings has been in need of a makeover lately. Maybe his breakup with Grant last season hit him harder than he can acknowledge, and subconsciously he's down on himself, because we can't fathom how else to explain his ever-growing hair. But in a way we're glad he let himself go because it paved the way for the show to bring in the very fabulous guest star of RuPaul!

"Max is having hair trouble this year. He’s having trouble finding a style that suits him. Also, he’s too lazy and poor to afford a cut, so he goes to Jane and Alex’s stylist, and they hit it off, and I think that will probably be Max’s stylist from now on," Pally said when LA TV Insider Examiner was on set.

RuPaul is KrisJahn, the stylist who Max goes to in "The Incident" when his own attempt at a makeover turns him into the kind of guy who would Catfish you. Seriously, check out the clip to the left to know why we say that. But the bromance that forms is about so much more than just a haircut, as KrisJahn's "loose lips" spill great salon gossip.

What Max learns starts off small (Jane thinks Alex is a flake, yada yada) but very quickly becomes more serious (Alex thinks Jane is only into black guys because of how she lost her virginity, etc). In true Max fashion, he uses that to his advantage with his friends, (un?)intentionally starting World War III between the Kerkovich sisters.

The gossip Max comes back with is enough to send the sisters into a verbal catfight, airing each others' dirty laundry, that gets so bad, one sister actually yells at the other "You were born a man!" Want to take any guesses as to who says that?

Although RuPaul has a penchant for humor, and the show itself is a timeless comedy created to make its audience feel good, filming "The Incident" came with its own special set of drama (don't read that in a Derrick voice because it was actually very serious, you guys). Pally shared with us that that his big scene with RuPaul had to be done with the news of Newtown's shooting breaking as they were doing takes(OMG). Crew members were constantly checking their phones, updating everyone on set with what was happening, which added a challenge to Pally and RuPaul being silly and over the top. Through it all, though, Pally said RuPaul couldn't have been nicer or more professional, and we hope that means he will get to shantay and stay the stylist to all of the characters, hopefully to return in a future episode!

Happy Endings airs on ABC on Friday nights at 8 and 8:30 p.m. "The Incident" air on April 5 2013 in the earlier part of the hour.

Now we know why Max hasn't been getting a haircut recently. Idk why he looks like Dave in that preview clip, i actually thought it was at first.

The most annoying TV fanbases

Game Of Thrones – The “Well, In The Books…” Fans

Let me begin this with saying there are three types of Game Of Thrones fans:

a) those who read the books before the TV show and keep themselves to themselves, b) those who only heard of it when it came to TV, enjoy the TV show but don’t wish to pursue it any further, and c) finally, those who watched the show, then bought the books and have anointed themselves Kings and Queens of all Game Of Thrones fans, better than all the others because they know more than you.

These are the kind of fans who, for example, when the trailers for season 3 came out, flooded YouTube and other places with non-headlined spoilers. It’s not enough that they made a conscious effort to ruin the show for themselves, they’ve decided to ruin it for the people they consider “lesser fans”.

“Excited about ****’s storyline? Doesn’t matter. She dies in book 4.”
“Why would you ruin that for me?”
“Err, well a true fan would have read the books.”

In terms of this bracket of Game of Thrones fans, knowledge isn’t power; knowledge is the power to be self-righteous and ignorant.

Beyond this there are people who use referrals to the book to excuse the TV show and make you feel like an idiot. For example, I only watch the TV show and happen to find Daenarys completely insufferable, to which this corner of fans will respond with, “Well if you read the books and understood the character, you would know you should love her.’

Congratulations. You’ve read a book. I hope the Queen has a big enough medal for you in the New Year Honours list.

Whilst you have to respect the fans who love the books, that does not make you better than the fans who choose not to read them for the novel reason of “being surprised by a TV show as it comes out.” If such a thing still exists.

My Little Pony – Brony Cloppers

I’m not one to judge people for enjoying a show deemed out of their target audience. I myself still have a deep affection for all things Digimon, Yu-Gi-Oh, Power Rangers and High School Musical; however the people who have a love for these types of shows and adopt a persecution complex are the type of people who you think needed an extra cuddle when they were a baby…or are just plain ridiculous.

I don’t bring up the fact I like High School Musical in front of people only to go “Oh don’t hate me because I like that! You’re so judgemental!” That, FYI, would be a modest reaction for the hardcore group of bronies who have been known to accuse people who don’t really care about their obsession as racists.

If you ignore the bronies who overtake conventions, have been known to be involved in physical altercations, ruining the conventions for their younger audiences, and move straight on to the internet bronies, you enter a whole new world of weird and absolutely nowhere near wonderful.

Rule 34 is an internet meme that should be kept that way, not adopted as a way of justifying porn of animated horses styled for and created for children. It dances a little too close to the bestiality/paedophilia lines for any reasonable person to appreciate. However, not only does such a branch of My Little Pony fandom exist (they call people who pleasure themselves to this porn cloppers), but they treat this as a rite of passage to “true fandom”, some claiming you’re not a real fan until you’ve played with yourself over a cartoon horse.

Those who do not partake in this are then attacked by these (I stress, minority) members who hijack messaging boards with fan fiction and animated horse porn as not being real fans and discriminating against those who do.

Arrested Development – “The Greatest Comedy That’s Ever Existed” Fans

I like Arrested Development nowhere near as much as the next man, because the next man probably has never watched it. I like Arrested Development a normal amount, whereas the 1 of the 20 men next to me in this incredibly laboured metaphor holds Arrested Development as the pinnacle of all comedies ever created.

It’s funny in places; but the best comedy show ever? Hmm.

One issue I find with shows like Arrested Development is the fact it wasn’t very successful in the rating side of things and the fans it does have undertake a “siege mentality” approach to the show, defending it with their lifeblood and pitching it to the many people who don’t watch it as the greatest thing ever, elevating it to a pedestal which many non-original fans fail to see.

The love of this cult show drives fans to many strange ends, such as the people who criticised David Cross for taking a role in Alvin and the Chipmunks because it was branded as selling out and abandoning his cult comedy roots.

Now I’m all one for respecting fans, but what’s the problem with accepting a well paid job? Does the person who accepts a job at Subway over the lower paid job at a hipster sandwich shop get criticised? No…he’s being incredibly sensible.

One of the issues with a show like Arrested Development is that it had a small, loyal fanbase. It never reached a broad spectrum, and those who loved the show surrounded it in defence of it, bigging it up to ridiculous proportions and attacking comedy that didn’t match it. See Community fans for a modern reference.

On top of this my run-ins with Arrested Development fans have ended with my comments of “It’s good, enjoyable, not the best comedy ever,” being met with angry comments about mainstream comedy not being as good as Arrested Development; which isn’t really the topic of conversation. Criticising The Big Bang Theory doesn’t make Arrested Development better, nor does it change the fact The Big Bang Theory is the highest rated comedy show in the world.

Passion is to be respected but passion about a subject that leads to the abuse of irrelevant ones is what makes a fanbase inaccessible to outsiders and puts people off the show.

Lost – The “You Didn’t Get It” Fans

Now as many who have followed my writing on here (through choice, anger or unfortunate events) could tell you, Lost is my favourite TV show of all time.

One of the reasons for that is the ending which I found immensely satisfying, both because it brought the show full circle and allowed your own interpretations of the purpose of the show and the island. I fully bought into the ideas of fate and the character-driven show; however, I am aware that many were dissatisfied by the show’s conclusion because of a lack of definitive answers. As a result, many ended up labelling the ending as a cop out.

I see these perspectives and respect them; while I don’t believe a show needs to give an answer to every question, I appreciate people who felt Lost left itself short.

However, where most can appreciate this, discussions and message boards often erupt in to a (mildly heated would be an understatement) debate about how those dissatisfied with the ending “simply didn’t get it”, with fans who did like the ending of the show putting themselves on pedestals of supposed superiority for being of an intellectual stature high enough to understand the ending of Lost.

It’s incredibly foolish to label people who didn’t enjoy the ending to a very divisive show as too stupid to get it, and the groups of fans who go out of their way to say “Oh, did you get it? Well let me inform you…” are the ones who make people say, “So…Lost is something I’m never revisiting.”

Degrassi: The Time of My Life special promo

i hate having to wait until june to see this ugh

The seniors aren't the only ones leaving Degrassi at the end of this school year.

Alex Steele, who plays fan favorite Tori on TeenNick's long-running hit drama, will not be returning for the 13th season, we've exclusively learned.

"I'm very proud of my time on Degrassi and feel very lucky to have worked with such an amazing cast and crew," Alex tells us in a statement. "I've decided to take on a new focus pursuing film. I have a few opportunities already in the works and am excited to get started!"

TeenNick had no comment on Steele's exit from the series, and we've yet to learn how the show will address Tori's absence in the new season.

Longtime fans of Degrassi will remember Alex, who is the sister of Degrassi original Cassie Steele (most recently seen on the short-lived and underrated CW series L.A. Complex), from her original role as Craig's (Jake Epstein) cute little half-sister, Angela. She returned to the series in the new role of Tori in season 11.

"It would have been cool to come back as Angela, but I'm so excited for Tori!" Alex told us at the time. "I was auditioning at the time, and they put up a character Tori, and I auditioned and got the part. It was just a regular audition. They didn't contact me or anything."

lbr here, she's leaving because tori never even got her own C plot in an episode and i don't blame her.

Amber Tamblyn Celebrates General Hospital's 50th Anniversary: "It's Where I Learned Everything About My Craft!"

Amber Tamblyn, who originated the role Emily on General Hospital and played it for six years, posted a beautiful message on her Facebook page Tuesday in honor of the show's 50th anniversary:

Yesterday was General Hospital's 50th Anniversary and I couldn't be more proud to call myself part of their family. GH is where I learned everything about my craft- the art of emotional intelligence, of listening, of interpreting, of setting a scene on fire. Its where I held Stuart Damon and wept when my real life Grandmother passed away, and where Stuart Damon held me and wept when Anna Lee passed away.

Its where I learned how to be disciplined in what I do. Where I found myself, as an actress, as a woman, and as veteran. Its where I learned what having REAL fans in your corner can do for you: carry you into a confidence that most actresses only dream of.

On GH, we burned for them and they for us. I absorbed the skilled techniques of John Homa, the turbulent genius of Maurice Bernard, the soft golden simplicity of John Ingle. Its where I had my first real life teenage secret crush (Shout out to you, Jonathan Jackson) and where I developed sister-strong bonds (double shout out, Kimberly and Becky).

General Hospital is more than an America staple. Its the staple gun.

I hope every actor has a chance to experience working on a soap, and every kid gets to grow up watching one with family.

Today I am thinking only of GH and this incredible, historic milestone.

Anthony Geary, Jane Elliot, Kin Shriner Dish the Golden Days of General Hospital!

TV Guide has posted a fascinating new interview with longtime stars Anthony Geary, Jane Elliot and the newly returned Kin Shriner. They dish on the show's heyday with stories about Gloria Monty, showing up to work drunk, the Daytime Emmys and much more.

TV Guide: It's such a joy to have the old guard back together on GH these days. Jane, I saw you on Access Hollywood asking a great question: "Why did these people ever go away?"
Elliot: I'll tell you why! It's a writing issue. Writers dry up. They can't think of a place to go with the older characters. It's easier for them to do an old story with a new character than do a new story with an old character.
Geary: And let us not forget that writers get residuals for every new character they create as long as that character is on the air.
Elliot: It's my belief that The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful are the highest-rated shows because they use the same people decade after decade. That's what this audience wants to see — their old characters in new situations. And that's what our current executive producer and head writer, Frank Valentini and Ron Carlivati, are delivering.
Geary: Usually, new producers and writers want to put their stamp on a show. They don't want to continue what's working. They want to reinvent the wheel. It's an ego thing. And once they've gotten rid of characters that were well known and deeply loved, they think they can create that same magic with new characters. Frank and Ron did the exact opposite and it saved our ass. Things were pretty rough there for a while, but they got better as soon as [ABC Daytime chief] Brian Frons left. He hated the soap medium. He hated it from the beginning. He wanted reality TV.

TV Guide: Do you remember the first time you laid eyes on each other?
Elliot: I was already on the show when Tony came along. I tested with him and six or eight other guys who were up for the role of Mitch Williams. When you test, you're doing the same scene over and over and so often the actors will give similar readings. But when Tony came in, it was [her jaw drops open] "Wow! This is a horse of a different color!" In your audition you improvised something with a pen. What was it?
Geary: I was sitting at Tracy's desk, picked up a pen and started playing Tic Tac Toe, and Jane walked in, grabbed the pen out of my hand, finished the game and said, "I win!" And that set the tone for our entire real-life relationship. [Laughs] Nothing's changed.

TV Guide: Jane, how come you only lasted two years back then?
Elliot: [Hesitates for a moment] Is Gloria dead? Oh, yeah, that's right, Gloria's dead. Is her sister, Norma, dead?
Geary: Norma just recently died.
Elliot: Okay, then I can tell this story. I quit because Gloria insulted me. I was making, like, a dollar and a quarter a week — horrible money, so little money that I asked for a $50 raise and Gloria told my agent I was unprofessional. Now, you can call me a lot of things but you cannot call me unprofessional. I was so insulted she applied that word to me that I said, "I'm not working for her anymore!" I finished out my contract and left. I went to Knots Landing for a bit, then Guiding Light. I didn't return until after Gloria was gone.

TV Guide: Ever regret leaving?
Elliot: Nope.

TV Guide: Not even once? Seriously?
Elliot: Okay, yes, once. When I was on All My Children, I went over to see Julia Barr [Brooke] for lunch at her house in New Jersey and her place was so beautiful. She had these incredible lighting fixtures and every piece of furniture was functional art — just exquisite! And I sat there thinking, "So this is what you get if you stay on a show!" That's the only thing I regret — that I missed the ability to create a really stunning environment for myself. But artistically? No regrets whatsoever.
Geary: Had you already done that great, iconic scene where Tracy keeps the heart medicine from her father, before you made the decision to walk?
Elliot: Yes, but I was off the show by the time I won the Emmy. That's another thing! Gloria didn't want me to be nominated. She picked the people she wanted on the ballot. One day I got a call from her secretary who said, "It's time for the Emmy submissions and Gloria refuses to nominate you. I think you should come down here and nominate yourself." I said, "I'll be right there!" And that's the only time I ever did that. The Emmys are not my thing.

TV Guide: Give us another Gloria Monty story.
Geary: Wow, there are so many! The first thing that comes to mind is this trip a bunch of us took to a Native American reservation in Arizona or Utah somewhere. Chris Robinson [Rick] was opening a little shop at a museum there and he got me, Jackie Zeman, Lester [Leslie Charleson, Monica], Susan Brown [Gail] and Gloria to fly out with him. For some reason, the big thing there was tossing cow chips — otherwise known as dried cow s--t — and the winner is the one who can toss it the furthest. We all had to do it, including Gloria, who says in that grande-dame voice of hers, "Oh, Lester, dear...would you choose one for me?"— like she was talking about hors d'oeuvres on a party tray. So Lester went and got a very special one and handed it to Gloria who said, "I don't think this one is going to go very far, Lester dear. It's still wet."
Shriner: I have a fond memory of driving with Gloria in my open jeep over Mulholland Canyon with her almost spilling out. She was screaming, "Kin! Slow down! Kin! Stop!" Another time I was on my way to work on my motorcycle and drove past Chris Robinson on the side of the road in handcuffs. He said "You need to tell Gloria I won't be into work today!" I said, "I'm not gonna be the one to tell her! She'll kill me!"
Elliot: Those were the days when you never missed work. They would put out a barf bucket next to the stage and if you had the stomach flu...
Shriner: Or a bad hangover...
Elliot: You'd finish your scenes, barf in the bucket and come back and continue working. There was no such thing as calling in sick.
Shriner: They also had a doctor who'd show up with shots for whatever ailed you.
Geary: For those who showed up too drunk to work, they'd sober you up with vitamin B.
Shriner: The partying never stopped. We'd leave work at GH at 9 p.m., head over to Flippers Roller Disco, down a few kamikazes, skate until 2 a.m., then be back on the job by sunrise. Then the next night, we'd do it all over again!
Geary: It never seemed decadent. It all seemed so natural to us. We thought that's what show business was all about.

TV Guide: And you weren't scared of Gloria's reaction?
Shriner: She was very scary but she also had a great sense of humor. If you could get her to laugh you were in business, so I always played that angle on her and then she would not be so angry at me. But we all got yelled at quite a bit.

TV Guide: Even Mr. Geary, the superstar?
Geary: Oh, yeah, I got it, too. But I loved Gloria. I didn't have the same problems a lot of people had with her
Elliot: [Laughs] Because you were drunker than the rest of us!
Geary: I was drunker! But she could be brutal and say, "You gotta do that scene again. It was horrible!" You did it to her satisfaction, not to your own.
Elliot: And you didn't get to argue. With Gloria, it was her way or the highway. And, damn it, she was always right. She was so smart but also very vicious, and we all felt we were in the trenches together. We were young, we really liked each other and those friendships have prevailed. We go to the movies together, we travel together. We've cheered each other's wins, mourned each other's losses. We've gone through marriages, divorces, births, deaths. Kin was with me the night my father died. He was the person I most needed to call. And I was with Tony the night his mother died. We share such a rich history and a very abnormal one. Sometimes we'd be at the studio until 2 a.m. and had to be back to work at the crack of dawn so we just slept in our dressing rooms. There was no union protection. Nobody was taking care of us. Overtime was, like, $5 an hour. There was no penalty to work us long hours, so Gloria had free rein and could do whatever she wanted. As a result, we formed really close bonds. God, she was mean! But she also was a really great talent picker. She picked Tony, she picked me. She could see who had something different.
Shriner: I was already on the show when Gloria got there, so what are you saying — that she got stuck with me?
Geary: But she never got rid of you, so there's a compliment. She had no shyness about firing people.
Shriner: One time she sent a hurricane through the town and wiped out all the actors she didn't like. The writers had Scotty and Laura locked in a shed during the storm so they could survive.
Geary: [Laughs] One day, Gloria turned to me on the set and said in dismay, "Look at all these children. We have too many kids on the show right now. I feel a school-bus crash coming on..."
Elliot: We used to have this Styrofoam egg...[she stops abruptly and looks down at her smock]...Kin, you just spit food on me! Unbelievable! I had hoped to make it through the whole meal without this.
Shriner: Did I get fish taco on you?
Elliot: Yes, and that's why I wore my smock to this lunch. For this very reason! He's the sloppiest eater on the planet.
Shriner: So that's why you're wearing that smock? When you showed up in that thing I was thinking, "Hmm...is this the new fashion? Is it maternity wear?"
Elliot: No, it's my Lunch-with-Kin wear! Unbelievable! So, anyway...we used to have this Styrofoam egg on the set, like the kind you find at the craft store at Easter, and we called it the dinosaur egg because, well, Gloria was a dinosaur. When it was your turn to catch hell from her — when no matter what you did that week was wrong and she'd really hammer you for it — you'd return to your dressing room and there would be the egg. It was this compassionate reminder that there's nothing wrong with you, that it was just your turn in the barrel and that this, too, shall pass. And then that person would hand it to the next innocent victim.
Geary: There was this actress on our show named Mary O'Brien — she played Heather before they cast Robin Mattson — and she was having trouble crying in a scene. Gloria came out of the control room and said, "You've got to cry! We need you to cry!" Mary tried it again and Gloria came back out and said, 'You're still faking it! I want real tears!" After another three or four trips to the stage, Gloria finally went ballistic. "You must be the worst actress I've ever hired! I don't know what the hell was wrong with me! The whole scene is hinging on this! You are ruining General Hospital!" And she went on and on until Mary started to cry. Then Gloria said, "Yes! That's it! Shoot it!" And she walked off the set. There were times when I was embarrassed for people, when Gloria humiliated somebody beyond the pale. But I did love her eccentricities.
Shriner: You gotta have a Captain Nemo at the helm — like a Frank or a Gloria — who sees the big picture. When we shot the Luke and Laura wedding and Scotty made a surprise appearance and caught the bouquet, Gloria had me hiding out in a trailer on the set so the word wouldn't get out — and this was decades before people were spoiling things by Googling. No, that's not it. What do they call it? Tweeting! That was the first time I met Tristan Rogers [Robert]. [Laughs] He was in the same trailer sleeping one off. Hey, remember those public appearances we'd all go on together? Remember when they actually paid soap stars to show up somewhere?
Geary: Once I was hired to go down to the Grand Ole Opry for a series of appearances, and Kin was there too. We hung out together and got so carried away we didn't make it to one of the shows. They came after me — not Kin — and said, "The only reason you're here is to make sure Kin makes it to the stage." I thought, "Oh, really? In that case, Kin, why don't we skip the next show, too?"
Elliot: They were so rowdy back then.
Shriner: Tony, remember when we got lost in Canada one night? And that time you were up on the roof ready to take a swan dive into the pool? In those days you'd end up in some pretty weird spots, because the appearances would be in some mall in some far-off part of the country and they happened every weekend, so we were never quite sure where we were. And the drinking didn't help. Leslie Charleson has a whole bunch of pictures of her and me on one of those trips, and neither one of us can remember a single moment of it. We have the evidence — there we are posing with people, doing this, doing that, and looking like we're having fun. But we're, like, "How come we can't remember it?"
Elliot: Kin! Kin! [Brushing more fish taco off her smock] You did it again! Why aren't you spitting on Tony! Why is it always in my direction? Un-be-lievable!
Shriner: I'm always annoying Jane. Remember that time I ripped a couple of pages out of your script because I had to look at something really quickly?
Elliot: I went crazy!
Shriner: Not just crazy. She went monkey crazy!
Elliot: You know, I really, really hate it in interviews when actors say, "This cast is like a family." But this is my family!
Geary: It's like we're a club, a posse. And we all have similar memories though very different stories to tell. [Laughs] And, as you can tell, we never tire of telling them!

What Can You Expect From The 2013 Daytime Emmys?

Now that the Daytime Emmy Awards ceremony has been scheduled for Sunday, June 16, the question then becomes what can we expect from this year's celebration. So Soaps In Depth went straight to the source for answers: executive producer Gabriel Gornell and senior executive director David Michaels!

This year is the 40th anniversary of the Daytime Emmys as well as THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS, and with GENERAL HOSPITAL celebrating 50 years on the air, it's the perfect time to celebrate daytime's illustrious history. "We'll definitely be looking at past, present and future with regards to daytime television," Gornell promises. "It's our own 40th and that will anchor the theme. It'll work nicely as we honor all the anniversaries that we'll be celebrating at the same time."

And of course, you can't celebrate history without plenty of clips to illustrate it! "We're going to put particular emphasis on the wonderful clips from years past," he adds. "I can tell you everybody is excited to see wonderful clips celebrating 40 years of achievements. This year, more than any other, we're going to be embracing that."

And while ONE LIFE TO LIVE is technically eligible for awards for its final month of episodes, ALL MY CHILDREN will also be included in the show. "Let's just say that a lot of those actors are part of our 40 year history," Michaels teases, "so it's certainly appropriate [to have them there]."

Additional creative elements such as the names of presenters and a host will be announced in the coming weeks, but Michaels wants soap fans to know that the genre will not be lost in the rest of the daytime programming. "The talk shows are huge right now as are the court shows and the culinary shows," he admits. "But all of that said, still, there are no fans like soap fans. People want to see the soap stars, and they will!"

Christian LeBlanc's Surveillance Camera Captures Hit-And-Run Video

THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS star and New Orleans native Christian LeBlanc tells CBS News that surveillance cameras at his Louisiana house caught a hit-and-run on video. LeBlanc says the crash woke up house guests.

"We had friends in town," LeBlanc adds, "and the first thing he sees down there is this poor guy dragged by a car that's running a stop sign."

LeBlanc would like a speed bump, caution light or stop sign, "anything at this point," to be added to the busy intersection near his house.

Emme Rylan First Airdate On GENERAL HOSPITAL Revealed!

Emme Rylan's first airdate for GENERAL HOSPITAL will be April 11, according to the actress on Twitter. Rylan is joining the cast of GH as Lulu Spencer Falconeri, replacing Julie Marie Berman, who announced her departure last month. Lulu has been kidnapped and her husband, Dante, and parents, Luke and Laura are desperately searching for her.

Rylan previously played the roles of Lizzie Spaulding in GUIDING LIGHT and, most recently, Abby Carlton in THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS.

Melissa Ordway is replacing Rylan on Y&R as Abby and will debut later this month.

Will Keck, Senior Editor & Columnist of TV Guide Magazine will moderate a panel discussion on April 12 at 7 p.m PT that will feature GH executive producer Frank Valentini and head writer Ron Carlivati. Also joining the discussion are the two men responsible for bringing back so many beloved fan favorites over the past year: executive producer Frank Valentini and head writer Ron Carlivati.

Eden Riegel Talks Returning To Play Bianca Montgomery!

Fans are just a month away from the return of "All My Children" and "One Life To Live," which will both debut online, thanks to Prospect Park's The Online Network, on April 29.

And it's not just the fans who are thrilled, so is Eden Riegel, the Emmy-award winning actress who is stepping back into the role of Bianca Montgomery.

AccessHollywood.com: How excited are you to be back in Pine Valley?
Eden: It's really tons of fun and a little bit surreal because I've had such a history with the show and it was such a huge part of my life... and I had to say goodbye to it... The final goodbye really felt like it was for good. Not initially because there was this potential that Prospect Park could bring it back, but very shortly thereafter, they couldn't make the deals with the unions and it just started looking less and less likely. When they finally demolished the set, we were sure that that was it. And then to get a call a year later, that they really meant business - first of all, it was like a dream come true, but also it signaled to all of us the real commitment that Prospect Park was making to the show and how much they believed in it. Nobody resurrects something from the dead unless they really think that people want it and it has a place in our culture and that meant a lot to us all.

Access: What was the conversation that got you on the show?
Eden: I have a family and I live in LA, and I was like, 'I want to do it so badly, but I don't know if I can.' And then they came up with this really creative idea - they're sharing the studio between 'All My Children' and 'One Life To Live,' so there's these hiatuses where we can return home to our normal lives so it's not quite as disrupted... They really wanted me back on the show and that meant a lot to me because they needed continuity for the fans and they needed representation by somebody from the Kane family. Susan Lucci is the lifeblood of the show... She's working on 'Devious Maids' right now and so she wasn't able to make a full time return, although I have heard that she's doing everything she can to come back at least for a visit, but, it was really important that the fans know that this is gonna be their show and not just a bunch of new faces. So, it meant a lot to me that they tried so hard to make it work and that they were excited about my character and had great ideas for what to do with her so I just had to do it because I wanted to see them through to this chapter.

Access: It's really interesting what you said about having a representative from the Kane family because I hadn't thought about that before ... Does that put extra pressure on you as an actress ... because you are the representative of this family.
Eden: Yeah, you know what's really funny about that is when I first started on the show, I was a teenager and I was playing 16 and I was having big problems with my mom and she had this rebellious daughter that she didn't totally understand. That was my first storyline and now I have a 16-year-old daughter on the show. It's completely fully circle and I would say Miranda much more takes after Erica and Bianca sort of takes after Mona... One of the first major storylines that 'All My Children' featured was Erica Kane, a rebellious daughter and her mother, sort of a matriarchal type, who was trying to guide her daughter to a safer place. She was trying to keep her in check, but also celebrate who she was and we're doing sort of a similar thing... It's so interesting that it should happen right at the beginning of 'All My Children 2.0.'

Access: Is it true we pick up a few years later?
Eden: That's right.

Access: The last time people saw 'All My Children,' J.R. Chandler had a gun, and he was hiding behind the walls as most of the residents of Pine Valley were gathered together. What can you tell us about where the show picks up?
Eden: By having a quick sort of fast forward you get the opportunity to restart things because things have changed a lot in these people's lives and yet, they're still struggling with some of the same issues, and, of course, that final cliffhanger has definitely affected -- it's ricocheted and affected people's lives and Miranda and A.J. who were just little kids at that point are now teenagers and dealing with the fallout themselves. So I think it was a really, really smart move to do this time jump because then you just get so many more possibilities. You don't have to quickly rehash and finish up old stories. You get to start fresh with the same people, but at a slightly different point in their lives.

Access: Do they explain away Erica's absence?
Eden: No. I think in a good way... there isn't a lot of time on like, 'Oh, where's so and so?''You remember she's out of town doing this...' They don't spend a lot of time on the exposition of that stuff so what you end up getting is the feeling that those people still are present. They're just not featured. And soap audiences are used to there being a large cast and not every storyline can be dealt with every day so, it doesn't have to be mentioned that Erica's at the nail salon today. So I don't know if it's specifically mentioned where she is or what she's doing... I don't think that her absence is gonna be quite as palpable for the audience, which is good because I'm sure they're gonna miss her enough and they can sort of believe that she is present.

Access: We've heard the show is going to be a little racier and the language is going to be a little racier. Is that true?
Eden: Yes, that's what I've heard too. And I've definitely noticed it in the language and [how] the romantic encounters are described on paper - and I didn't get to see any of them shot - but I do understand that they were quite racy and there's a little bit more skin showing.

Access: Is it more cable-y?
Eden: Yeah, I think so. I think a funny thing happens when there's much more creative freedom. Because we're doing it on the web, there aren't as many restrictions. In a strange way the show feels a little less edgy, I think it's gone a little bit more to the heart of what the show originally was, which is relationship driven rather than plot driven.

Access: You started talking about other people's relationships on the show, so I'm guessing then that there is no romance for Bianca this time around?
Eden: They're being very secretive and I can't reveal anything and some of it has to do with -- Bianca was very affected by what happened at the end of the show -- the big cliffhanger and her family is very affected by it, so if I tell you what's going on with her romantically, it's a big reveal.

Access: Finally, we hear Alicia Minshew, who plays your sister Kendall, is coming back for a cameo. Is that correct?
Eden: She is coming back for a cameo... and I got to work with her... Yes, Alicia is coming and I got to do a scene with her, which was just amazing. Staring into her big brown eyes everything came flooding back, like our old relationship and we shared so many intimate scenes together and also we're very, very close friends so it was a lovely reunion between Bianca and Kendall.

THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS Moving To TVGN, Leaving SOAPnet This Summer!

TVGN today announced that it will become the exclusive basic cable home for the #1 daytime drama, THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS (Y&R). The acquisition of the top-rated daytime franchise from Sony Pictures Television (SPT) marks the first TVGN programming announcement as part of the new CBS Corporation/Lionsgate partnership.

Beginning this summer, Y&R will move from SOAPnet, where it has already been a basic cable ratings success, to TVGN, keeping the 7 p.m. ET/PT time slot where it has built a loyal fan base, and will appear day-and-date with its broadcast on CBS. One of the most popular franchises in daytime television history, Y&R recently celebrated 40 years on the air on CBS, where it has dominated the ratings in daytime.

Currently, Y&R is the #1 daytime drama on network television among total viewers and key demos, including women 18-49 and 25-54. It has also been Soapnet’s #1 series for five consecutive years, delivering a significant audience share among women 18-49 and 25-54—two key demos for TVGN.

Alison Sweeney & James Scott Appear On THE TONIGHT SHOW!

DAYS OF OUR LIVES star Alison Sweeney and James Scott appeared on THE TONIGHT SHOW on Tuesday evening in a skit with Jay Leno. Leno was asked by an audience member if he would ever star in a soap opera. She then asked if he would run over to DAYS and tell Sami he was in love with her.

JWoww's Bartender ONE LIFE TO LIVE Role Is 'Totally Me'!

JERSEY SHORE star JWoww is ready for her April 29 appearance as a bartender on ONE LIFE TO LIVE. She told MTV she understands all the subtleties of that part.

"I'm playing a bartender who sleeps with her boss. So it's me, basically. I used to be a bartender. I never slept with my boss, but I slept with plenty of people to know the attitude issue," she told MTV News on the set last week, where she was sporting soap opera-approved big hair and a tight t-shirt.

"And he's bringing around other girls in front of my face, so this role is totally me from night to day, day to night."

While she can understand her character's state of mind, what's been proving difficult is learning all her lines. She explained, "But the only problem is remembering my lines and knowing where to step and where to stand. So I just keep repeating my lines over and over with the cast, saying it along with them helps a lot. Last night I was going through them with [my fiancé] Roger and I completely blanked and today I'm doing better."

Judith Light On ONE LIFE TO LIVE's Return: 'This Is A Demonstration Of The Power Of The People'!

In a new FrontiersLA interview, Emmy winner Judith Light reflects upon her time playing Karen Wolek in ONE LIFE TO LIVE, and shares her excitement about the return of her former soap. Here's an excerpt:

A few weeks ago, the internet was abuzz again with posting the clips and scenes of the 34th anniversary of the ultimate soap opera performance of you as Karen Wolek in the Daytime Emmy winning courtroom scene on ONE LIFE TO LIVE from 1979! What do you think about that performance, when you look back at it today?

I think dynamically for the culture, as we were talking about before, what it demonstrates is the need to have the courage to come out. When people see that they are moved by it, because against all odds, against every secret, against ever knowing that she will be rejected by her community, her husband, her friends, everyone in her life just about, she knows that she has to tell the truth about what she had done. And in doing so, it sets her free.

I think at a deep profound level which we all know and can feel, there is that oneness and connectedness. Karen’s omission on the witness stand is an ionic moment, because everyone understands that at a very deep profound level. It’s not only that performance; it’s what the moment in time symbolizes … something that everyone can recognize as a kind of bravery to support a friend that simply has to be done. It doesn’t just free the friend; it frees the person who was doing it, as well. You also have to understand, that was a year and a half of putting every piece of that story in place. When I came on OLTL they said to me, “We want to do the story from the movie Belle de Jour with Catherine Deneuve.” It was the story of this woman who was a prostitute during the day and was married to this man, and that was her life. They said, “What do you think of this story?” I said, “I think it’s brilliant.”

So they carefully laid in the pieces of that, and you have to look at the level of writing! People say, “Ech, Soap Operas!” Look at what they created! I believe it is one of TV Guide’s Top 100 Moments in Television. It is for the depth of the story, the writing of the story, the year-and-a-half of placing it in real time, and then having the courtroom scene being the culmination of it. I think that is why people still relate to it.

The show that gave you your start ONE LIFE TO LIVE was canceled in 2011, and went off the air in January of 2012; only it has a second life to live! ONE LIFE is coming back online with all new episodes on April 29. What are your thoughts that his iconic soap is literally coming back from the dead?

I think it is so fantastic, and I am so happy for everyone. I am not just happy for the people on the show, because it was something that they had devoted themselves to for such a long time, but also the fact that the fans are the ones who really demanded it! They were the ones that put themselves on the line and put themselves out there, and they got what they wanted and what they deserved. It makes me so happy. You want for people to want what they have longed for, and what they have been devoted to. This is a demonstration of the power of the people.

GH Stars Ring The NYSE Opening Bell!

On Monday, April 1 at 9:30 a.m. ET, Executive Producer Frank Valentini, Head Writer Ron Carlivati, and cast members Anthony Geary, Genie Francis, Kin Shriner, Jason Thompson, Kelly Monaco and Finola Hughes of ABC’s GENERAL HOSPITAL will visit the New York Stock Exchange and ring The Opening Bell to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Emmy-award winning show.

Online Soaps an Intriguing Prospect for Daytime Emmys!

Agnes Nixon’s socially relevant serials All My Children and One Life to Live were groundbreaking in content when they debuted on ABC over 40 years ago.

Now, those same programs, which the Alphabet net canceled in 2011, stand poised to chart new territory — as business models for online programming — when they return with fresh episodes starting April 29.

Production company Prospect Park has licensed the serials from ABC and will be presenting them on Hulu Plus, iTunes and Prospect Park’s own network, dubbed the Online Network.

“A while back, Jeff (Kwatinetz, my business partner) and I started to believe that the world was about to change in terms of how viewers receive their programs,” says Rich Frank of Prospect Park. “Almost 20% of college graduates don’t buy television sets. Today, there’s the ability to feed anything to anybody’s screen — TV, iPad, or telephone — and give them programming that they want.”

While the two canceled serials were no longer wanted by ABC, Frank and Kwatinetz felt that the programs could serve as the foundation for an entire online network.

“At first, we had trouble explaining what we were trying to do, and we couldn’t make the deals,” Frank says. “After a year of (people) being out of work, there was a lot more openness to it. The guilds worked with us.”

There’s buzz that the new versions of ‘Children’ and ‘Life’ will outpace their broadcast counterparts in terms of provocative material, in order to capture new and younger viewers.

“We are going to be a little hotter and sexier,” Rich says. “That doesn’t mean we’ll be doing anything that’s offensive. We’re trying to be contemporary and have storylines that are relevant to people’s lives.”

But online soaps may find it challenging to do doing eye-grabbing material that’s more timely and provocative than what broadcast serials are already providing. For example, The Young and the Restless recently told a cyberbullying storyline with some of its teen characters; Days of Our Lives is telling an ongoing gay teen love story that has shown two young men kissing and in bed together.

“Nobody tunes in for the bells and whistles,” says “Days” co-exec producer Greg Meng. “This genre’s all about the written word.”

Steve Kent, senior exec programming veep of Sony Pictures Television (which produces “Restless” and “Days”) says he isn’t sure that the Prospect Park endeavor is a true gamechanger.

“This is an evolution of the viewing mechanism,” Kent says, “People have long predicted the demise of network television, but it still exists and will for the foreseeable future.”

As for potentially racier content, Kent says, “If they turn ‘All My Children’ into porn — and I’m sure they won’t — then nobody is going to watch. Soap audiences are more traditional.”

Kent hastens to add, however, that the definition of what’s traditional is “constantly changing.”

No matter what, the industry will be tuning in (logging on?) to see if this venture succeeds both creatively and financially.

“We all have our fingers crossed that this is successful,” says Meng. “(But) these shows won’t be competitive with us.”

Says Frank: “If we’re right, we’ll have started something. If not, then we’ll have spent a lot of time seeing if this would work. But we’re very confident that this will happen and that people will come to us. This is just the start. After we’re up on the air and running we’re going to look at doing other things.”

The Week In The Year 1998!

Stuart asked Liza for help in keeping Scott and Gillian from marrying. In typical Liza style, she shrewdly developed a plan to stop the wedding. Liza presented Ryan with an ultimatum. Ryan, busted by Liza for taking kickbacks, tried to woo Erica into changing her story. Needless to say, she was more amused than impressed. Comforted by the image of Maria, Edmund managed to free one hand, but Jim easily overpowered him. Pressured by Brooke, Laura finally told her story. Stuart, unaware of Liza's plan, offered Gillian his hand in marriage, while a dismayed Marian listened in. Tad returned from Pigeon Hollow with news for Camille. The real Axel Green showed up with the intention of reclaiming his ex-wife. Dimitri met with a mystery man who provided him with a means of tracking Jim's movement. The mystery man broke into Linden and looked nearly identical to -- but aged -- Mike Roy. Opal flew off the handle when she discovered Palmer and Isabella dining together. Dimitri tracked Jim and overtook him.

Margo and Jack were in a shootout, and Margo had to take a life. Carly took the home pregnancy test and was disappointed to find it negative, but she devised another idea. Lucinda and Molly teamed up to take David down. Nikki asked if she could move in with Barbara.

The Forresters watched anxiously as Rick and Amber underwent major surgery. Thorne told Stephanie that he was taking a vacation from the family. Grant and Macy gave their friends and family a surprise wedding. Thorne watched helplessly as Macy said "I do" to Grant. Lauren grew more and more puzzled at Johnny's strange behavior. Ridge, Taylor, and Thomas grew closer while Stephanie presented Brooke with papers that could end her marriage to Ridge.

Stefano got out of the hospital and tracked down Celeste, giving her the cure to the jungle madness. Edmund planned a surprise wedding for Susan and took Violet and Elvis to Salem just before Kristen was ready to escape to England to kidnap the baby. Susan was caught trying to escape and was scheduled for execution. The evidence against Laura continued to pile up, forcing Abe and Roman to reopen the investigation into Kristen's death. Eric and Nicole's secret photo shoot went well, and Sami vowed to make Kate accept her new campaign. Mike's rival, Craig, taunted him about his failed relationship with Carrie, renewing Carrie's commitment to the campaign at the expense of her time with Austin, who started to brood about Carrie's devotion to Mike.

Michael was returned to Carly and Jason as Tony was arrested as the kidnapper. Jason rushed Robin to the hospital, and as she recuperated, Jason made the decision to stop seeing her to protect her. Tess carried out her plot to kill Jax. Lucky joined forces with Helena.

Reva discovered that she was not alone on the island. Cassie had trouble dealing with Reva's death and the Reva clone. Blake confided her feelings for Ben to Holly; Holly gave her a way out. Ben objected to moving Abby to a minimal-security prison where she would be safe, and the judge agreed. Ben gave the tape to Blake, and Ross set the wheels in motion to get Abby released. Abby met her new cellmate. Ross went to confront Ben just as Blake, not knowing where Ross was headed, decided to visit Ben one last time. Reva built a raft. Clone Reva had another growth spurt.

Téa made it clear that she wanted a divorce, but she and Todd played a game of "Money Hungry." Viki went out on a date with Sam, and Clint showed his jealous side. Andrew told Viki that he loved Téa, but she could not condone his actions because what he did affected his congregation. Max and R.J. went to Quebec and found the twins. R.J. was shot. After Todd's nightmare, Téa slept next to him in bed. Blair had a fake ID made and showed it to Ian's solicitor. Todd gave Blair more visitation with Starr. Téa read Todd's letter. Todd and Téa kissed.

Neil told Dru he was tired of her deception. Dru told him just because she wanted a career didn't make her a terrible person. She decided to take the extended modeling job and left, taking Lily with her. Christine confided to John Silva that she was thinking of helping Michael get his law license back. Phyllis told Michael that Christine would never forgive and forget what he had done to her. The vigil for Nikki at the hospital continued, as Victor vowed to find Sara and punish her for what she had done. Victor remembered the good times he had once shared with Nikki and the idyllic family life they'd had. He called Diane from the hospital to tell her he was heading home -- he had something important to discuss with her. At the apartment, he told her that Nikki would most certainly die, and he wanted to reunite the family before she did by remarrying her. He needed Diane's cooperation to do so. Diane reluctantly agreed, and Victor headed to the Dominican Republic for a quickie divorce. Back at the hospital, Nikki started to wake up, asking where Joshua was. Shortly after learning of his death, Nikki went into cardiac arrest, and she had a near-death experience. When she got "back," Victor was there, and he told her he wanted them to be a family again. He asked Nikki if she would be his wife again, and Nikki said it was all she had ever wanted and that she felt at peace. "Yes," she said, "Yes, I do." Victor gently kissed her.

The New Spoiler Culture: Game of Thrones and the Fight to Live Uninformed

spoilerss
Who killed Laura Palmer? I found out the hard way. In the middle of my first viewing of Twin Peaks in the fall of 1998, before I reached the reveal on the show, a wholly unrelated SPIN article about the Malcolm McDowell remake of Fantasy Island casually blew the mystery for me in a mid-sentence aside. I screamed. Then I called up the friend who’d been screening the show for me on VHS and screamed again, into the phone: “It was HER FATHER?!?!” Then I heard my roommate scream, since I’d just revealed it to him, too.

Like a young Bruce Wayne staring into a pool of blood, pearls, and shell casings in Crime Alley, this traumatic early experience with spoilers scarred me for life. Of course, this was back when television access was locked to your television, or perhaps a DVD of a previous season.
Today, DVRs, HBO Go, Netflix, and other streaming services have enabled a panoply of approaches to viewing what used to be considered “appointment television.” Not to mention social media like Twitter and Tumblr and Facebook, which have radically altered the way we interact with one another about what we watch and read, and our degree of control over receiving that input.
Now, every morning is a “morning after” for someone, and front-page headlines emerge from every nook and cranny of the Internet. Spoilers aren’t just something you randomly stumble across in articles about Fantasy Island — they’re something you must actively avoid. And no show has to tread this line more carefully than Game of Thrones, HBO’s hit adaptation of the epic fantasy novel series A Song of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin.
There are currently five A Song of Ice and Fire novels and counting dating back to the summer of ’96; functionally, that means several thousand pages’ worth of “spoilers” for everything that’s happened on the show so far, plus tons of stuff it hasn’t even gotten to yet. Many viewers came into the show fresh, then went back and read the books. Others are still blissfully unaware of the horrors to come. It’s the one show where the wide range of knowledge levels among fans mirrors the wide range of ways to experience and discuss the show itself, making Game of Thrones a unique window into the ongoing negotiations between shows, their fans, their critics, and websites to establish community norms regarding spoilers.

aricle2
The fansite Tower of the Hand has developed a unique, and uniquely user-friendly, approach to spoilers: a “scope” system in which readers select the point they’ve reached in the series (book or show) using a toggle bar that hides or reveals information in the article they’re visiting according to their selection. By tagging different sections of each article according to the corresponding source material—”Book 1,” “Book 2,” and so on—site co-founders John Jasmin and Alex Smith are able to customize their reference materials, reviews, and essays to the needs of each individual reader.
“It takes only one browser cookie to remember how many books [a visitor]‘s read and a little bit of Javascript code to determine which sentences to show him,” says Jasmin. “All this was fairly rudimentary from a technical standpoint, but it’s turned out to be a powerful and unique feature of the site.” The system was easy to duplicate for discussions of the show on an episode-to-episode basis, and since all of the site’s content is homegrown by Smith, Jasmin, or their hand-selected guest contributors, there’s little risk of wiki-style mislabeling.
The largest and most influential A Song of Ice and Fire fansite, Westeros.org, has an additional challenge on its hands: its hugely popular forum, where over 56,000 registered members with divergent levels of information about the books and show mix and mingle. The fans, says site co-founder Elio García Jr., agree in large part about a couple of things: “that no one wants to have something spoiled for them involuntarily, and that we must protect the TV show watchers from spoilers as best we can. We try to make our policies clear and consistent, so people know what they’re going to get when they enter some particular forum.”
With its focus on the show rather than the novels, Winter Is Coming, the youngest of the “big three” ASoIaF/GoT megasites, treats anything that hasn’t aired as a spoiler. Like Westeros, they make copious use of a spoiler-masking tag that hides text until a user mouses over it, plus good old-fashioned “SPOILER”  warnings in the bodies of posts, to protect newcomers. Once something has aired, however, game on.
“The instant an episode of GoT airs, discussing it openly on the site is fair game. We assume any one coming to the site has caught up with all the latest episodes,” says site creator Phil Bicking. “My feeling is if someone is behind on a show and visits a fan site for that show, they should expect to get spoiled.”
One of the reasons for the care taken among fans of this particular franchise is that, well, they’re fans of the franchise. Although the shocking death of Eddard Stark that rocked the show’s audience back in Season One had been accidentally revealed to me by a well-meaning coworker while I was in the middle of reading the first book, later events hit me like bolts out of the blue. I was so upset by the massacre of Robb Stark and his forces at the event known as the Red Wedding while reading A Storm of Swords, the volume upon which the current season is based, that I immediately re-read the chapter, sure I’d gotten something horribly wrong, then literally lost sleep over the fact that I hadn’t. And by god, I want others to feel my pain.
The Time-Shifted Critic
Whether — or when — to discuss spoilers is a complicated line for anyone to walk, but particularly when it’s your job to talk about what happens in television shows. Huffington Post TV critic Maureen Ryan takes a Hippocratic “first, do no harm” approach to revealing plot information without warning: “I generally work from the principle, ‘Try not to ruin someone else’s TV-watching experience whenever possible.’”
Posts about specific episodes or storylines that offer ample warning up front are one thing, she says, but “if you are writing a general-interest story, feature or review, unless you really need to mention a key plot point that people might want to discover on their own—whenever they watch the show in question—then don’t mention the development.” (I should note that this would have saved me my Twin Peaks agony.)
As a TV critic who watches the show but hasn’t read the books, HitFix.com’s Alan Sepinwall, a pioneer in the weekly-review format known somewhat inaccurately as a “recap,” is forced into the unique position of trying to protect not only his readers and commenters from spoilers, but himself as well. Apparently, it’s an uphill battle. “It’s incredibly annoying, if I’m being honest,” Sepinwall says. “I don’t think I can be much plainer in my warnings, and yet everyone seems to think that what they’re about to write will somehow not give anything away, when it always, always does.”
His opposite number on this score is ThinkProgress pop-culture blogger Alyssa Rosenberg, who’s not only read every book in the series, but wouldn’t much care if she hadn’t. “I don’t care at all about spoilers,” she says. “Ever… I actually hate the term ‘spoiler,’ because it implies that a work is ruined for you if you know plot points, which I think is both ludicrous and dramatically over-privileges plot.”
Thanks to that Twin Peaks incident, I’m pretty far removed from Rosenberg’s viewpoint, myself. I see plot information the way I see shot composition or editing rhythms or performance choices: an aspect of the work intentionally deployed in a certain way, for a certain effect.
It’s certainly true that great shows, books, or films can’t be “spoiled,” in the sense that foreknowledge of a single plot point “ruins” everything else the work in question has to offer; after all, I knew that Ned died while reading A Game of Thrones for the first time, and I know pretty much everything that will happen on the TV series thanks to that reading, and still greatly enjoy both novels and show. But spoilers are a nuisance the same way poor picture quality, glitchy sound, bad dubbing, or broadcast-TV edits are: They interfere with your ability to experience art the way the artist intended.
Common-Sense Spoiler Avoidance
Screenshot: Tumblr Savior
Yes, most fans and critics do their best to prevent heart-breaking spoilage, from Sepinwall’s clearly delineated warnings to Tower of the Hand’s book-by-book content filtering. (For Tumblr users, there’s even a Chrome browser add-on called Tumblr Savior that can help newcomers filter out posts marked with “#spoilers” or similar red-flag words when using Tumblr’s tag-based search function.)
But in the face of time-shifting, social media, and book-readers and show-watchers, fans and critics, hardliners and IDGAFers alike all agree that the best weapon in the fight against spoilers is common sense.
If you’re a time-shifted viewer who’s behind on a show, it’s pretty much on you to know where not to look. Stay off Twitter during and immediately after an airing. Avoid Tumblr tags for your favorite characters from book one unless you want to know what happens to them in book five (if they’re still around). Don’t read reviews of shows you haven’t watched yet. (Duh.) And have reasonable expectations of the people who write about this stuff, because in the words of Walter Sobchak, life does not start and stop at your convenience.
“There’s a slightly wearying expectation,” says anti-spoiler advocate Ryan, “that we should always protect everyone’s experience all the time. I’ve been yelled at for writing or tweeting about certain developments three days after the show in question aired. I try to be really careful about not spilling major things without warning, but hey, it’s three days later!”
This can get to the point where the mere existence of a post gets treated like a spoiler, regardless of content. “The morning after a Mad Men character died,” Sepinwall recalls, “I published an interview with the actor, and was accused of giving it away for those who hadn’t seen it yet, because why else would I be talking to this person right then?”
The death of Ned in Game of Thrones season one may well have transcended its context to become a cultural touchstone by now. The Red Wedding, the probable climax of Season Three, will most likely join it. These are cases where, barring the equivalent of driving past a line at Barnes & Noble and shouting the ending at people waiting to buy the book, there may no longer be such a thing as a “spoiler.”
“I know some people haven’t yet seen The Wire, The Shield,” Sepinwall says. “On the other hand, some things are so ubiquitous there’s no point in it. Everybody knows The Sopranos ends on a cut to black, that [Citizen Kane's] Rosebud is a sled, [The Crying Game's] Jaye Davidson is a man, [The Empire Strikes Back's] Darth Vader is Luke’s father….”
Well, not everybody, I’d guess. Hey, you can never be too careful.

New Kids on the Block's Jonathan Knight Walks Off Stage During April 4 NYC Concert

New Kids on the Block took to the stage at Clear Channel Media + Entertainment's iHeartRadio Theater presented by P.C. Richard & Son in New York City last night (April 4). The Boston boy band played songs from their new album "10," released on Tuesday, as well as favorites from their catalog of late '80s/early '90s favorites for a mostly-female crowd of frenzied fans, aka, Blockheads.

The night's lone surprise? Member Jonathan Knight walked off the stage halfway through the hour-long set and did not return, despite pleas from adoring fans.

Considering his well-publicized bouts with anxiety, including a 2001 sitdown with Oprah Winfrey on the topic, Knight's emotions may have gotten the best of him.

The quintet – Donnie Walhberg, Joey McIntyre, Danny Wood, Jordan Knight and brother Jonathan – was in seemingly good spirits before the show (broadcast on Clear Channel's iHeartRadio platform) in a video interview with Billboard, discussing its hit-packed past and declaring hopes to remain together indefinitely. The group, which has now released two studio albums since 2008 following its 1994 hiatus, has been making promotional rounds in New York this week, and to good effect: "10" is expected to debut in the top 10 of next week's Billboard 200 albums chart, while lead single "Remix (I Like The)" enters the Adult Top 40 airplay chart this week at No. 39.

When the iHeartRadio set began, however, Jonathan Knight was visibly out of synch with the rest of the group, notably not joining in for the act's trademark arm-waving on its 1989 Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 "Hangin' Tough." He also repeatedly kept to the back of the stage while Walhberg and McIntyre, especially, bounced around energetically. He also appeared to receive a call on his cell phone during the set, appearing distracted by it (although smiling as he looked over to his bandmates at one point).

The group did its best to make Knight more at ease, repeatedly wrapping its arms around him, but when Jordan announced that his brother would sing on the next song, the touching ballad "Survive You," from "10," Jonathan laughed, attempted to sing and then stopped. He made his way off the stage, while the band continued the song, announcing after that Jonathan would return. Fans also chanted his name in encouragement.

 Knight Departs at 27:00

But, songs passed –- including a spirited medley of "Step By Step," a three-week Hot 100 No. 1 in 1990, "Hangin' Tough" and "You Got It (The Right Stuff)" (No. 3, 1989); "Tonight" (No. 7, 1990), during which Walhberg, McIntyre, Wood and Jordan Knight ventured into the grateful crowd; and, two show-closing versions of "Remix." And Jonathan Knight failed to return. The remaining foursome joked about the exit with a running gag that nature had called and he was stuck in the restroom, but also ribbed that the events would "make TMZ" today. McIntyre also attempted to diffuse the drama of Knight walking off the stage ahead of the group's tour with fellow vocal groups 98 Degrees and Boyz II Men, which kicks off May 28 in Uncasville, Conn.

Ultimately, McIntyre attempted to comfort the crowd by noting that "We love Jonathan and he loves us" and that their fellow Kid would be fine.

After the show, Jonathan Knight made a simple post on his Twitter account: "I'm sorry ……"

Perhaps his discomfort was previewed in a Tweet posted before the show: "#ifeelnaked"

Representatives from Clear Channel and the Kobalt label, which has released "10," offered no further concrete explanation for Knight's exit following the show.

The group's busy week has also included appearances on "Today,""The View" and Bravo.

Could Knight's previously-revealed battles with anxiety be behind last night's unexpected events? Despite the group's past success, including nine consecutive Hot 100 top 10s and a pair of Billboard 200 No. 1s in 1988-90, Knight has shared that anxiety and panic attacks have long plagued him.

"The whole New Kids thing was crazy. The more it grew, the more I just felt like I was trapped. I just always had this feeling inside me of always being nervous and afraid of situations. The hardest thing for me was doing interviews, doing talk shows, photo sessions, being in the studio … just because you're with so many different people.

"You're shaky, your heart just starts pounding, and you have a dry mouth. The easiest thing for me was to just avoid situations.

"From 1994 to 1997, I did nothing," Knight has said. "I slept and slept and slept. If I was awake, I had to deal with things, I had to do things. In order to avoid that, I would just stay in bed. You go through the whole thing, too, 'I'm weird or I'm strange,' and it just makes your whole self shrink down even more."

Following last night's show and Knight's Twitter apology, New Kids fans seemed aware of Knight's past troubles and offered words of reassurance. They're a bunch so loyal that it bought an ad in last week's Billboard magazine welcoming the group back and celebrating its 25 years of hit-making (a fan-army-fueled move that Billboard's advertising department could not recall having happened at any other time in recent memory).

"Don't EVER be sorry. We love you," wrote @MacPack410.

"never apologize Jon! Do what you need to do:)," posted @meldiv75.

"Sweet, sweet man..no apologies," @MissMandyHale added. "You are already an inspiration for even being up there at all."

Wahlberg offered the group's only reaction on Twitter following the show: "#AllSystemsNormal."

His light-hearted take on the night: "To recap- Joe was especially dazzling! Jordan was especially amazing! Danny was especially solid & Jon was especially shy!"

He also re-Tweeted the sentiments of @JEEPGRL732: "Give Jon a giant hug & tell him we luv him."

Kellan Lutz Nabs Title Role in 'Hercules 3D'

Renny Harlin is directing the $70 million-budgeted film for Nu Image/Millenium.
Director Renny Harlin has found his Hercules in Kellan Lutz. Lutz, one of the more popular co-stars of The Twilight Saga, has signed to star in Hercules 3D, Nu Image/Millennium’s big-budget take on the Greek demigod. Harlin (Cliffhanger, Die Hard 2) is directing the $70 million epic, which is aiming to shoot in May in Bulgaria.

"It takes more than a good physique to portray the most legendary, mythological personality in history — and Kellan has exactly that, personality," Harlin tells The Hollywood Reporter. "He's not afraid to explore the strengths and vulnerabilities of the character, and he impressed me with his passion and heart."

The movie is one of two high-profile Hercules movies being made by Hollywood studios; the other is an MGM/Paramount co-production to be directed by Brett Ratner. Dwayne Johnson is playing the hero in the rival project. While exact plot details are being kept under wraps, Hercules 3D will have at its center a love story between the son of Zeus and the mortal princess of Crete, who was promised to his older brother despite her love for Hercules.

Sean Hood, Harlin and Giulio Steve wrote the script. Producing are Les Welden and Danny Lerner, who also teamed to produce Millennium’s recent action hit Olympus Has Fallen. Avi Lerner, Trevor Short, John Thompson and Boaz Davidson will executive produce.

"Kellan has the look and charisma that Harlin envisioned for the character," says Davidson. "Renny had him in mind from the start, and we are really excited to have him on board.” Lutz played Poseidon in Relativity’s 2011 epic Immortals. He is repped by Innovative Artists, Zero Gravity Management and Morris Yorn.

"This is a breakout role for Kellan and a chance to grow and shine as an actor," Harlin says.

Ugh @more crazy Juliette. However I would love to be able to see multiple Nicks, shirtless, in my bed, singing to me, whatev.

I keep forgetting Monroe is a scary blutbad (werewolf) because he's such a sweet and loveable guy.

The Borgias Season 3 Sneak Peek & Spoiler: A Quick Look at the Assassin Rufio

Happy One-Month Anniversary, SimCity. How's It Going?

0
0
One month ago today, EA and Maxis released SimCity into the wild. The game's launch was… troubled, to say the least. In fact, you could very easily call it a disaster. Server woes, a debilitating online requirement, AI shortcomings, lost cities, and slow customer-service left many gamers angry.

In the case of SimCity, a month feels like both a long time and a short time. On the one hand, it's hard to fathom that a game this massively popular could still be having fundamental problems an entire month after launching. On the other hand, it somehow feels like it just came out last week.

Kotaku has been maintaining our "SimCity Disaster-Watch" since the game launched. Our plan has been, at some point, to sound an "all clear." But even now, SimCity is lacking some key advertised features; even now, it can be difficult to log in. People are still locked out of some of their cities, and the game's creators are still posting apologetic updates to the company blog. In other words: No all-clear yet.

Let's take a look at the State Of SimCity, one month out.

It's still not fixed.

SimCity isn't fixed yet. Leaderboards still aren't in the game. AI is still weird, despite some fixes from Maxis. Some readers are still reporting that they're unable to access their cities, and in fact, I've been locked out of the city I made on the Kotaku shared region, as well as a few of my other cities, ever since the first weekend the game was out. I was still locked out as of this morning.

There's an understandable hesitation to invest too much time in a city only to lose access to it—imagine if you leveled a character in WoW or Diablo III and then it vanished from the server! And so I play SimCity with a level of trepidation, awaiting the next failure or error message. Given what we've heard from some readers, I'm not alone.

Cheetah speed is back.

One of the core features that Maxis removed from the game to improve stability was cheetah speed, the fastest of the three possible speeds for the game's internal clock. That feature has been added back into the game as of about 12 hours ago. I've tried it out in my game and it works—minutes now tick by in twos, so it moves at more or less twice the rate of the middle "llama" speed.

There's a big "2.0" update coming, at some point.

Last week on the Maxis blog, producer Kip Katsarelis shared an update regarding their progress toward restoring the features they'd pulled. Here's Katsarelis:

We’ve been heads down addressing the key issues we’re seeing reported from our community. This includes city rollbacks, lost progress, and the return of features like Cheetah Speed and Leaderboards. Like you, we want all of these resolved ASAP, which is why they are the top priorities in our studio. Matter of fact, we have all of these in a QA environment, giving them a thorough test before we release them back to you, the fans.

On top of this, we’re also working on a number of bug fixes and other overall improvements that we’re planning to include in future Updates. Just last week we released two Updates (1.7 and 1.8), which included traffic fixes and other general improvements. For the future, in Update 2.0, we’ll be addressing the Recycling Center bug, fixing the fire engine clumping, improving the efficiency of Street Cars, and increasing the radius of river water. We’re also fixing the tuning on Casinos and are making them more profitable. These are just a handful of the substantial changes coming in Update 2.0.

I've been in touch with EA PR about the 2.0 update, and while they say it's coming soon, they can't give a specific date. They say they'll have more information for everyone next week, including more info on what'll be updated and when the 2.0 patch will roll out. Given that we recently got cheetah speed back, I'd imagine they're just about there.

There's some wonderful(y tacky) free DLC.

The first free DLC for SimCity has been released, and it's… a sponsored Nissan car-charging station. Huh. Well, Maxis is probably focused on fixing the game before adding to it.

EA's "apology games" have been doled out.

A week after the launch fiasco, EA/Maxis apologized to everyone who had bought the game and offered them a free one. Those games, which include Battlefield 3, Mass Effect 3, or, somewhat humorously, SimCity 4, have now been released, and if you've logged into Origin and have SimCity in your games collection, you should've had a chance to download one. I opted for SimCity 4, since I've never really played that game and am now dead curious about how it holds up in comparison to the new one.

Things are probably going to get better.

Of course, this is relative, but things are probably going to get better for SimCity, likely in the near future. Granted, they'll be getting "better" for a game that still has a long way to go until it's where it should've been at the start.

The 2.0 update will likely address a lot of minor problems, though some major ones may still go unaddressed. And that'll still be annoying. In particular, we've still been unable to get any kind of ETA from EA about when our lost cities will become un-lost. It's also unclear the extent to which Maxis and EA are overhauling the game's questionable AI and often wonky simulation.

SimCity will probably remain more or less what it is, it'll just work a bit better. The city sizes probably aren't getting any bigger anytime soon. It'll still require an internet connection to play—EA maintains that the always-on requirement isn't DRM, even while labeling DRM a "failed, dead-end strategy," despite the fact that our sources' reports of an always-online next-gen Xbox have people angry all over again.

And so, as we await word about the 2.0 update, the SimCity Disaster-Watch is still in effect. The game has come some distance since its launch a month ago, but it's not out of the woods yet. We'll keep our eye on SimCity in the hopes that one fine day, we can finally stand down and sound the all-clear. But we're not there yet.

Who's got a NY Times Bestseller and a body that just won't quit?

JESSICA ALBA!

Jessica Alba’s first book becomes NY Times best seller

Jessica Alba can now add the distinction of being a New York Times best-selling author to her impressive list of accomplishments as her first book, “The Honest Life: Living Naturally and True to You” has landed on the no. 8 spot on its list of best-selling paperback releases. It debuted at number 3!

Alba’s first foray into the literary world focused on her approach to healthy, green and eco-friendly living. In the book – which features plenty of adorable pictures of her daughters Honor and Haven, as well as husband Cash Warren – Alba gives fans insight as to how she’s created an “authentic, stylish and fun” life for her family; sharing advice on everything from nutritious eating to style, home décor, bringing up baby, entertaining and keeping clean, all with special attention paid to her experience running her environmentally friendly product line, “The Honest Company.”

“The Honest Life” – released on March 12 – faced some stiff competition in the home and lifestyle niche with the recent release of “It’s All Good,” from fellow Hollywood icon Gwyneth Paltrow. While celebrity moms – think Miranda Kerr, Soleil Moon Frye and Josie Maran – have each made a foray into eco-friendly lifestyle products, Alba has said that she felt her tips are more approachable to readers that Paltrow’s.

“Gwyneth Paltrow probably lives a very similar lifestyle, but I didn’t grow up with a bunch of money, so my tips are much more grounded: Repurposing things and making things at home,” Alba said in a recent interview to the New York Daily News. “You can take what you want from the book.”

And it looks like Alba may have been right about the appeal of her cost-conscious approach, as Paltrow’s book has yet to make the New York Times list of best-selling books.

Chloë Sevigny’s ’90s Nostalgia

0
0

The 1990s are back. They’re on the runway in shades of Hedi Slimane’s new collection for Saint Laurent, the year 1993 is the singular subject of a new show at New York’s New Museum, and punk will be the subject of a sweeping show at the Metropolitan Museum’s Costume Institute this spring.

And where there’s a ’90s revival, Chloë Sevigny is never far away. Now, in a “takeover” of the über-cool video site Nowness, Sevigny—practically the poster child of ’90s irreverence—releases two never-before-seen videos of herself as a fresh-faced actress in the early years of the decade.

The first film, Surface, is a home movie shot by Michael Cleary and styled by Alister Mackie in Mackie’s London apartment. In the footage, filmed soon after she completed filming for the cult-classic Kids. Sevigny wears an Yves Saint Laurent Le Smoking and Chanel jewels as she robotically ticks through her to-do list. “Get some fresh air…water the plants…try and get some more Valium.”

“The inspiration for the film was really Chloë herself,” Mackie told Nowness. “The anti-fashion aesthetic and deconstructed finishes…it was the last really revolutionary period in fashion where things actually changed.”

In 1995, Sevigny starred in X-Girl, a short film directed by Phil Morrison and made for designer Kim Gordon’s mid-’90s line that bore the same name. The film is a winding but hilarious window in her world, featuring a bowl cut and a "Marc Jacobs situation."

Chloë Sevigny's 90s Throwback: Part Two on Nowness.com.

(Video won't embed, watch at the source.)

As Christopher Bollen wrote of Sevigny in Interview in 2008 (PDF): she “has been her generation’s heroine, fashion icon, and girl-on-the-edge,” all wrapped into one.

Lindsay Lohan Breaks Up With Boyfriend Avi Snow

Lindsay Lohan is back on the market.

Sources confirm exclusively to E! News that she and rocker Avi Snow have broken up after a brief, yet PDA-friendly, romance.

The details of what led to their demise as a couple remain scarce and it's unclear if they've seen each other since Snow saw her off to Brazil last week.

The rehab-bound actress, who, quite frankly, spent a week living it up in South America while ostensibly on a business trip, flew back to L.A. on Tuesday.

Snow, meanwhile, jetted to New York after his then-girlfriend left town, but then drove back to L.A. with his City of the Sun bandmates.

He told E! News after City of the Sun's L.A. gig last week, before Lohan took off, that she was "really awesome" and "a lot of fun."

Lohan is due in New York next week to appear on Late Show With David Letterman on Tuesday, after which she's planning on returning to SoCal to attend the Coachella music festival that weekend. According to her rep, she will not be attending the NYC premiere of Scary Movie 5 next Friday.

Anderson Cooper revealed one of his childhood crushes during a guessing game on his daytime show Friday.

He had to guess the names of 70s and 80s television shows based on clues from guest Jessica Walters. Walters gave the following clue: "One of the stars was Anderson's childhood crush."

Guest host Andy Cohen looked quizzically at Cooper, who spit out, "Which one?" Cooper correctly guessed "Joanie Loves Chachi."

"Wait, was the crush Scott Baio —" Cohen began to ask.

"Yea," Anderson admitted. He said that Baio was once a guest on the show, but that he "didn't have the courage to tell him" that he was one of his childhood crushes.
