Game of Thrones' Mark Addy speaks exclusively with TheVine

With the Game of Thrones: Season 2 airing in April, fans of the print-come TV fantasy series have, in the meantime, been lapping up all the fan fiction they can get.

Whether you’re a proud follower of the Emmy and Golden Globe award winning series, or a secret addict, we bring you an exclusive interview with Mark Addy, who goes by the moniker of King Robert Baratheon. You’re welcome.

Q: Give us a summary of your character

It’s not the briefest summary you will have heard! I play Robert Baratheon, one-time fearsome warrior who along with his childhood friend Ned Stark led a rebellion. They wanted to unseat the Mad King Aerys Targaryen who was a power-crazed tyrannical ruler. He murdered women, children, villagers on a whim - not the best guy to have in charge. He needed ousting. We led a rebellion to unseat him and with the power vacuum left we stepped up and said, “Okay we’ll rule the kingdoms.”

It’s a violent land but they retained some form of order from the chaos that existed previously. Robert sent Ned to guard the north, Winterfell, where he was quite comfortable, so that’s fine, life is good for him. But Robert in King’s Landing is surrounded by advisers who each have their own agenda and are forcing him to make decisions more for their own benefit than for his or for the kingdom’s.

Q: That sounds like modern politics

There are elements of truth in all of this. It’s extraordinary. Anyway, Robert – he hasn’t been challenged in terms of the monarchy. Consequently he has grown complacent, fat, drunk, and lazy, he’s taken his eye off the ball. It’s really only when Jon Arryn - who is in the role of the ‘Hand of the King’ which is a position that commands the same power as the king - it’s only when he dies that Robert suddenly realises, ‘Hang on a minute, on Jon Arryn’s word, in order to increase our power base and firm up the empire, I’ve actually married into a family, the Lannisters who are totally power mad. So Robert married Cersei, and her brother/lover is one of my close personal bodyguards, 24/7! I’m surrounded by the enemy here and there’s nobody watching my back - the only person I can trust is Ned Stark.

Q: And one of your first acts is to recall him to your side.

Yes. But I also know that by bringing him to King’s Landing and making him the Hand of the King, I’m drawing my best friend into the same danger that I am in  - because if they want to get rid of me they’ve got to get rid of him as well. But I’ve got no choice.

Q: And the House Targaryen?

The love of Robert’s life was Ned’s sister who was raped and murdered by Aerys Targaryen and his cohorts: hence a lifelong hatred of anything to do with them. Should Robert get his hands on either of the two remaining Targaryen family members he’d tear them apart immediately.

Q: So it’s complex!

And that’s a brief summary. That’s the complexity of what Robert is when we first meet him. That’s all kind of almost previous to where our story begins. So he is a complex character. He’s depressive, he’s drunk, he likes the whores but from an actor’s point of view I know exactly why, I’ve got all that history from the book which allows me to play that to the full extent.

Q: So having the books as reference has been more help than hindrance…

A help, absolutely! I’ve worked on things before where actors say, ‘I don’t want to read the source material because I need to focus my creative processes blah, blah, blah’. For me it was really, really useful to know, to have that knowledge of the battles that we fought back in the day. How Ned and I grew up together, when we were children, from little boys to men to fighting alongside each other, to taking control of this kingdom and everything that goes in between. You have that huge history before you even meet them. That’s all useful stuff to have in your file. It doesn’t necessarily come to the fore - maybe it’s mentioned in the odd scene - but having it there allows you to feel the weight of responsibility that’s on these guys’ shoulders.

Q: Why should people who wouldn’t normally have any interest in fantasy want to watch this?

I think what HBO have done is ground this in reality. It is fantasy, it’s fantasy writing, but they’ve seen that in order to make it work and to make it watchable by anybody it needs to have a reality to it. It can’t be, ‘…and then he turned himself invisible!’ There are elements of the supernatural here and maybe the odd bit of magic – but that’s kind of on the periphery. The main thrust of the thing feels so grounded in a reality.

Q: But it’s not one specific reality or moment in history…

No. It’s a reality that’s had to be created in terms of the look of the thing. The art department, costumes, props etc. have all drawn on elements that are familiar – there’s a slight medieval feel to it - but not specific. Yet each place is distinctive. You can almost smell what this place is like, or the difference between this place and somewhere else, whether it’s a desert environment or it’s a snow-covered wall. Because they created these worlds so painstakingly, it made our life as actors so much easier. You just walk in there and you go, “Right, this is the world we live in and this is us living it”.

Q: Have you seen ever seen a set like King’s Landing before?

No - the scale of those sets! That’s the beauty of being able to use the Paint Hall in Belfast where they used to paint and assemble huge ships. You could build an entire town in that space and shoot there.

Q: What was the most striking moment for you?

I didn’t actually shoot any scenes in what is the Throne Room where the Iron Throne is, but we did a poster shoot and that was the only time I actually sat on the Iron Throne. It was interesting because you sat on it and went, “Oh this is not very comfy” and the designers went, “Ha ha! Exactly!” Because of course it’s not the place that you want to be. Whoever’s on the Iron Throne, you are right in the firing line there!

Q: What about the horse riding, wearing pelts, leathers, armour – what kind of a challenge was that?

It was uncomfortable but that’s what you have to do. These are guys that come from the north of this country in a time when it’s been summer for ten years… but the seasons are changing, winter’s on the way and it’s going to be colder than we’ve ever experienced for the next ten years. So they’re hardened people and horses are a part of their life. For me, it was great. I learnt to ride for this although I think there’s only one scene where I appear on a horse. Shooting stuff on horseback is more complicated and time consuming than anything else. Actually, that’s one thing that I should have done for the kids – got a picture of dad on a horse.

Q: Were there any bloopers for the personal blooper reel? There must be potential for cock-ups with so many horses, costumes and props?

The only time was on the entrance of the King to Winterfell. We ride in and this huge procession arrives. I dismount and I walk up to Ned. There’s a little exchange that ends up with me laughing. Every time I laughed the horse would do a bit of a whinny - every single time – so you had a courtyard full of people on their knees rolling about.

Q: How big did this production feel?

It was like shooting ten feature films back to back. One of the differences between HBO and other television is that they demand the same coverage that you would have in a feature film. We need to have all the shots in order to make it as rich and as stunning as it looks. We can’t cut any corners. It’s got to be done properly and yeah that’s time consuming and it’s expensive, but I think the end result you see is way beyond anything that you’re used to seeing on television.

Q: It’s a huge, cosmopolitan cast. Why do you think that is?

Because America is a relatively young country, it makes that voice very specific to modern history. This is older than that so you need other voices. Sean [Bean] and I are both from Yorkshire and we’re from the north of this country [Westeros] so we’re using our own accents. The people from the south are using their own accents too.

Q: You’ve played many everymen, and now you’re being asked to play an awesome potentate who must have a feeling of inbuilt majesty. How do you hold yourself like a king?

Well you see in a way Robert’s background was as a foot soldier. Power for him is not a comfortable place to be. It’s all fascinating stuff to try and get your head round because he doesn’t like wearing a crown. He would rather be down with the fighting men and his people than up on the top table with the lords. He is a regular guy who’s been thrust into a position of power. In terms of playing it, it’s hard to play status; status is afforded you by other characters, it’s their deference to you. I guess it’s like if you’re playing the Queen she’s a little old lady really but the fact that everyone will afford her this majesty makes her the Queen.

Q: If you had to put your money on House Stark, Lannister or Targaryen coming out on top, which would you plump for?

Starks. It’s Starks all the way. Although I married a Lannister I could never support them!

Game of Thrones: Season 1 will be available on DVD/Blu-Ray on March 7 – just in time for you to re-watch the action before season 2 beings.

+ Rumor She is dating Mark Sanchez & Expanding D-A-S-H Miami

She is in town to sound out premises for a new D-A-S-H shop in Miami but Kim Kardashian is squeezing in a bit of pleasure into her work schedule. The reality star, 31, stepped out for dinner in Miami tonight showing off every inch of her voluptuous figure in a tight bandage dress. The nude pink ensemble highlighted her curves to perfection as she stepped out for dinner at Zuma with her best friend Jonathan Cheban by her side.

Kim has been pictured hitting the gym frequently in recent weeks and it appears whatever she is doing is working.
The reality star teamed the dress with matching peep toe heels and a hard clutch bag and had her newly-dyed tresses tumbling down around her shoulders. Kim showed off a fake tan disaster earlier in the day when she stepped out with patched on her hands.

Ahead of her dinner Kim tweeted a picture of herself to her Twitter claiming she took it to check on her make-up. The reality star drew attention to an apparent white spot on her face which appeared in the photo but not in real life she claimed. While Kim has been spending increasing time with Jonathan whose sexuality was questioned on her reality TV show, it has been claimed that Kim is secretly dating NFL star Mark Sanchez.

According to Strawberryicecream.com the pair are hooking up in secret. The website claims a source said: ‘Kim and Mark like to meet in hotels for dinner dates and ‘flings’. Whenever Kim is in New York, they hang out. They are very careful with not being seen together, Mark is seeing someone!’ The source website also claims that Kim and Mark are planning a rendezvous for the Super Bowl weekend.

Since splitting from Kris Humphries last year just 72 days after her lavish wedding in August Kim has said to have been in contact with her ex Reggie Bush with some outlets claiming she was dating Tim Teebow.

However Kim, who has yet to be pictured on a ‘date’, has kept quiet on the rumours. A spokesperson for the star failed to comment on the story earlier today. While others might be speculating about her next boyfriend Kim will no doubt be focusing on finalising her divorce.

Shopping for a store: Kim was seen earlier in the day looking for premises for a new D-A-S-H boutique in Miami The pair are said to be heading for a public divorce trial which could see their friends and family interviewed. According to HollywoodLife.com a source close to Humphries said: 'There are no divorce settlement talks going on. That means that the former couple, and friends and family, will have to speak out in court and reports claim the legal wrangling could not only be on TV but may go on for weeks.

+she also went to go visit Justin Bieber at The Hit Factory

Pam Grier talks about her book, surviving abuse, and the race divide in film.

TORONTO - Film star Pam Grier says there's still a lack of opportunities for African-American actors in Hollywood and it's partly due to marginalized audiences.

Film investors are looking to make the widest profit margins possible and build upon "brands" (such as actors or franchises) that can "keep the industry going," explains the "Foxy Brown" screen siren.

And if they do invest in a marginalized brand, the budget will likely be small and sometimes the target audience won't even support it, she notes.

"We have conservative African-Americans who will not see certain films, will only see Tyler Perry but will not see Spike Lee," Grier, 62, said in an interview ahead of her appearance at the Canadian Film Centre's celebration of Black History Month in Toronto.

"I know a lot of African-American women that didn't want to see 'The Help' because they had lived it as little girls and it was a circumstance that shouldn't have been and it was so problematic for them. It brought back horrible memories and they couldn't see it, nor will they read the book."

Image and video hosting by TinyPic
Grier, of course, has helped blaze a trail for African-American women in Hollywood by portraying a slew of fearless female characters, from the voluptuous villain hunter in "Foxy Brown," to the private detective in "Sheba, Baby," to the vigilante in "Coffy." In 1998, she was nominated for the best-actress Golden Globe for playing a fierce flight attendant in "Jackie Brown" — a role Quentin Tarantino wrote with Grier in mind.

Though she's often referred to as an icon of the '70s classic blaxploitation films, Grier isn't comfortable with the title.

"It was just basically a moniker that described a black action film," said the age-defying Grier, looking stunning in a black pantsuit and scarf, her hair in an elegant updo.

"There were several films done before me by male actors — Fred Williamson, Jim Brown, Isaac Hayes — a lot of black, male-lead films. But when I stepped into the role, now it's 'exploitation,' and the conservatives hated the fact that I was walking in their shoes."
Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Grier began her empowering career path on the big screen after a lifetime of abuse, she said, noting she was raped twice — first at age six, by children in the neighbourhood, and again at age 18. She said she was also a victim of an attempted rape, at age 21, in Los Angeles by a family friend who was supposed to mentor her.

"That's what made me fight. The two rapes and the attack
," said Grier.

"The last time, that's when I said, 'OK, now you're going to see it on-screen.'"

That's when B-movie honcho Roger Corman cast Grier in the female prison flick "The Big Doll House," which was shot in the Philippines.

"I said, 'I have to go, I want to get away, I want to see who I am as an independent woman,'" said Grier. "'If I can go away to the other side of the world, do something I've never done before and do it successfully, than this was all worth it.'

"And so that's how I was really transformed and started bringing my strength to the screen, and I just said, 'I've got to fight back.'"

Grier runs down her life story in her 2010 memoir, "Foxy: My Life in Three Acts," which she says is being adapted for the big screen (she won't reveal whom she wants to play her).

The book dishes on everything from the men she's dated — including Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Freddie Prinze Sr. and Richard Pryor — to her job as a receptionist at the American International Pictures Company, and how she was a timid child because of the rape she endured.

"I was traumatized and I had to retreat and my family actually thought I was autistic, and they would bring me animals and ducks and chickens and things because I couldn't talk," she said. "I was afraid to speak, I was afraid to tell, not knowing what to say to whom."

Her grandfather helped her break out of her shell, though.

"He was the first feminist in my life that really wanted all the girls to be equal to boys
, go hunting and fishing and shooting and driving and be around animals," said Grier.

"I wouldn't have been able to have a 40-year career without him because I brought that rural sensibility of independence and strength to films, which was new to the urban audience. They were like, 'Oh my God, she's jumping and shooting and fighting and wrestling. Oh my God — we can do that.'"

These days, Grier lives on a farm in Colorado, where she lets impoverished children ride her four horses for free. She and her sister also knit hats for U.S. military soldiers to wear under their helmets and for chemotherapy patients.

Grier battled cervical cancer at age 39 and the battle forced her to take a break from acting. It sent her on a life-long journey for alternative and holistic therapies, including Chinese medicine and herbs. Now, she's physically, spiritually and mentally a different person who's found her yin and yang, she said.

She also knows every Chinatown in every city she's visited.

"All across Canada I know where the Chinatown is," Grier said with a laugh.

In fact, Grier considers herself part Canadian after shooting several films here, including "The Adventures of Pluto Nash" in Montreal, "In Too Deep" in Toronto, and "Snow Day" in Calgary. She also had recurring roles on TV's "Smallville" and "The L Word," which were shot in Vancouver.

"I'm a Canuck, I'm a Canadian," said Grier.

"I worked there for 12 years and I feel like I'm Canadian."

Madonna thinks Britney Spears is better than Lady Gaga.. and is correct

$

It's no secret that Madonna speaks her mind (hey, did you know she doesn't like hydrangeas?), so when the press started comparing her to the likes of Lady Gaga, she had a few things to say on the matter. Earlier this month, the Material Girl callously commented on Gaga's "Born This Way," calling it "a wonderful way to redo my song." That in itself is pretty much a slap in the face, but now she's extended her wrath even further by inferring that the 25-year-old singer isn't as talented as Britney Spears in the March issue of The Advocate. Ouch.

When asked what she thinks of Mama Monster, Madonna at first cooly remarked, "I have no thoughts. What was the question?" But after some prodding about how Gaga has influenced today's gay youth, much as she did in the '80s and '90s, the hydrangea-hater retracted her claws a little, saying, "It seems genuine. It seems natural, and I can see why she has a young gay following. I can see that they connect to her kind of not fitting into the conventional norm. "I mean, she's not Britney Spears. She's not built like a brick sh-thouse." And out come the claws again. I'm not even sure what she really means in regards to the whole "brick sh-thouse" thing, but I do know that it was a definite diss. And to imply that Gaga isn't nearly as musically talented as B-Spears? Low blow.

It could be that Madonna lashes out about Gaga because she doesn't like the idea of being out-shadowed by a newer generation, especially by someone who others believe resemble her. Is it fair? No. But it's not completely unrelatable, although Madonna has chosen to deal with it in a seemingly childish way. At least we know she's fully capable of expressing herself...I guess you really do practice what you preach.

“Born To Die” debuts at Number 1 on the UK Official Albums Chart

25 year old US singer Lana Del Rey today triumphs over the recent media backlash as major label debut album Born To Die scores first week sales of over 117,000 copies, and outsells the rest of the Top 5 combined. In doing so, Born To Die becomes the fastest seller of the year to date, and the first album release of 2012 to break the 100,000 sales milestone week one and debuts at Number 1 on the Official Albums Chart

On its way to becoming undoubtedly one of 2012’s biggest debuts, Born To Die follows in the wake of 2011’s upward trends in UK digital music sales. Last year saw sales of digital albums rise by over 26% year on year, and Lana Del Rey has this week notched up a tidy 50,000 digital album sales alone in Born To Die’s first week of release.

Eddie Redmayne Mini Post

Prince William with the Birdsong heart-throb and fellow Eton prefects... and some VERY wacky waistcoats

11. Eddie Redmayne Studied History of Art at Trinity College, Cambridge, and made his professional stage debut two years after the photograph was taken. Nominated for the BAFTA Rising Star award for his role in My Week with Marilyn. The star of Birdsong is currently the face of Burberry and is due to give his final performance in Richard II at the Donmar Warehouse tonight. His next film role will be in the musical Les Miserables.
(full list of the wealthy, probably pompous mofos on Daily Fail - if you're into that)

One of them has just started a gruelling deployment to the Falklands and another is the heart-throb star of Birdsong and My Week With Marilyn.

But 12 years ago, Prince William and Eddie Redmayne were more interested in sixth form antics at Eton College.

The pair, seen here posing with their fellow prefects, were members of the elite group known as the Eton Society, founded in 1811 as a debating group. Like most prefects, the boys would have helped out at parents’ evenings and been responsible for looking after younger pupils.

The group was also keen to uphold another tradition – wearing a waistcoat designed to their own individual tastes.
(oh you fancy huh...)

Rumor: Did Vogue Play Matchmacker for Karlie Kloss and Eddie Redmayne?

Source #2

Remember that gorgeous editorial in Vogue’s December issue featuring Karlie Kloss and Eddie Redmayne as “a couple of sinners on Ibiza—she, wearing printed resortwear generating plenty of heat; he, trying hard to keep his cool.(lol this sentence) The spread, titled “Temptation Island” and lensed by Mario Testino, seems to have spawned a real life romance. We hear, from a well-placed source, that Kloss and Redmayne are currently dating. We haven’t seen them together outside of the pages of Vogue yet, but they make one extremely good looking couple.

BBC receives complaints about sex scenes in Birdsong adaptation

Birdsong, which stars Eddie Redmayne - a contemporary of Prince William at Eton - and Harry Potter star Clemence Poesy (boring as fuck lbr) as star-crossed lovers, made a highly-anticipated leap from the page to the small screen with a BBC adaptation penned by The Iron Lady writer Abi Morgan.

And while the TV version of the 1993 novel proved to be a relative hit in the ratings, drawing in over 6m viewers for the BBC, the broadcaster has been forced to admit that it has received complaints about the programme's content.

The first episode of the two-part production angered some viewers when it showed a topless Poesy, who later performed a sex act on Redmayne's character. (Eddie going down on her was sf hot, putting those poon-sucking lips to good use)

A spokesman for the BBC confirmed that 15 complaints had been made, but declined to comment further on Birdsong, which aired between 9pm and 10.25pm on Sunday.

More Info On Madonna's Contract With ClearChannel To Guarantee Radio Airplay

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Clear Channel is giving Madonna all its luvin'.

Indeed, in what has become another notch under Madonna‘s commercial belt, her latest single ‘Give Me All Your Luvin‘ has commanded a 14 million audience on US radio, a day after being released to its stations. To be exact, the single reached a total of 14.262 million listeners yesterday following the release of its video, which features Rap star Nicki Minaj and Brit sensation MIA. This places the cut alongside a select number of songs which have fared this well in this space of time. Two name two, 2006 saw Beyonce‘s ‘Deja Vu‘ make major waves with an audience of 10 million in a single day, followed by Mariah Carey‘s 2008 cut ‘Touch My Body‘ with 7 million.

While this is no doubt a commendable feat for the icon, it is worth noting that her label recently inked a deal with the Clear Channel conglomerate, which guarantees the song will be played non stop on the stations they own.

This, despite the transparency of the deal, has forced some to question how well ‘Luvin’ would have done had it not been put in place. Clear Channel, which owns 850 stations nationwide, estimated the promotional campaign would reach more than 150 million people around the world.

Beginning on Friday morning, "Give Me All Your Luvin'" is scheduled to premiere simultaneously across 95 radio stations and on more than 1,600 digital billboards in the United States, France, Spain, Sweden, Norway, Singapore, Belgium, Finland and the United Kingdom, as well as on demand at iHeartRadio.com, Clear Channel's customized online radio service.

"This first-of-its-kind multimedia premiere with Madonna demonstrates the unequalled scope and strength of the entire Clear Channel platform — a range and depth that enables us to work with the most talented and creative artists in the world to develop truly groundbreaking promotional opportunities," said Bob Pittman, CEO of Clear Channel, in a statement.

Mr Pittman has combined US and international outdoor businesses under one executive; hired a former cable executive to expand into television, events and digital entertainment; and taken a stake in a TV production company run by Ryan Seacrest, host of American Idol. Clear Channel has pushed its digital billboards as a timely means of promoting live events and TV and radio schedules. On Friday, the group aired her new single repeatedly on its radio stations and music websites from the US to Australia and played her new video on digital billboards from Times Square to Piccadilly Circus.

The Material Girl push is the latest multimedia endeavor from Clear Channel, which organized a two-day concert in Las Vegas last year that featured the likes of Jay-Z and Lady Gaga and announced last month that it was taking a minority stake in the production company of "American Idol" host Ryan Seacrest, who produces E!'s "Keeping Up with the Kardashians."

Madonna is expected to perform "Give Me All Your Luvin'" and three other tunes at her Super Bowl halftime performance Sunday in Indianapolis. Her new album "MDNA" is set to be released in March.

Madonna’s performance during Sunday’s Super Bowl game will be only part of a multimedia promotional blitz that could prove critical in determining whether her landmark deal with Live Nation pays off.

The performer struck a “revolutionary” 10-year deal with the events group in 2007 worth an estimated $70m-$100m from albums, touring, merchandising, films and other areas, but has not released an album since 2008 and has not toured since 2009.

In addition to the Super Bowl, the most watched US broadcast of the year, Madonna showcased the video on American Idol, and is planning promotions with Apple’s iTunes digital music store Google’s YouTube video site, said Guy Oseary, her manager.

“She wants to reach as many people as possible,” Mr Oseary told the FT. “I don’t remember any time with Madonna when she’s ever talked about sales. I don’t think she has any idea how many records she’s sold.”

Clear Channel’s promotion reflects efforts by Bob Pittman, chief executive, to reposition the indebted group as a broader entertainment company. “There are lots of other artists we could do this with,” said Tom Poleman, president of Clear Channel media and entertainment national programming platforms.

Radio remains an important launch platform for musicians, despite the rise of digital music services such as Spotify, Pandora and Mog, Mr Oseary said: “Radio is still a huge asset and one of the ways people get their information and connect to what is going on today.”

Liz Phair on Why Lana Del Rey Scares Rock’s Boys Club

$

Rolling Stone asked me to speak about
Lana Del Rey. I wanted to know how big my participation in the piece would be–was it substantial or just a quote? Just a quote, they said, to which I replied that I wasn’t super interested. Which was a lie. I have a lot to say about her, but no sound bites. You see, Lana Del Rey is exactly what I was hoping to inspire when I took on the male rock establishment almost twenty years ago with my debut record, “Exile In Guyville.”

Let me break it down for you: she’s writing herself into existence. She’s giving herself a part to play because, God knows, no one else will and she wants to matter in this life. As far as I can tell, it’s working. I went straight to iTunes and bought her new release “Born To Die” in toto (how often do I do that??) because it was more than a collection of songs or a performance, it was a phenomenon. Maybe all the more so because she’s not overwhelmingly talented. The minute I hear the whisperings of “how dare she,” I’m interested.

I don’t have to like it, it doesn’t have to be worthy. Lana Del Rey seems to be bothering everybody because she allegedly “remade” herself from a folk singing, girl-next-door type into an electro-urban kitty cat on the prowl (of course I like her), and they feel she is inauthentic. I would argue that the uncomfortable feelings she elicits are simply the by-product of watching a woman wanting and taking like a man.

Getty Images
Singer/songwriter Liz Phair performs her album ”Exile in Guyville” at the 9:30 Club on August 28, 2008 in Washington, DC.

I am what is called a sex-positive feminist. Or maybe a radical feminist, or, wait–this one’s cool: an anarcha-feminist! Which is to say that I don’t give a f— about your labels, I just want to hear the true voices of women self-expressing–smart ones, stupid ones, ugly ones, beautiful ones, good ones, bad ones, fat ones, thin ones, all of it–until the profound silence that has resounded throughout history is filled with a healthy chorus coming from our side of the aisle.

Can you picture our society, “one nation under The Goddess, indivisible… etc.?” If the president was always a woman and all the senators, judges and key business leaders were all female? Picture being forced to talk endlessly about your feelings and listen and care when what you needed was just to get something done. Doesn’t that sound sh–ty? Tiresome? Oppressive?

Yeah, I know the feeling ;).

Lana Del Rey really needs to duke it out with M.I.A. and Katy Perry, Lady Gaga and Kim Gordon, The Ting Tings and Tegan and Sara. That’s where she’s relevant. It’s our sh–. You wouldn’t understand.

So how does Liz Phair feel about Lana Del Rey? Well, as a recording artist, I’ve been hated, I’ve been ridiculed, and conversely, hailed as the second coming. All that matters in the end is that I’ve been heard.

Liz Phair’s 1993 album “Exile In Guyville” was named one of the top 100 albums of all time by VH1, and one of the 500 greatest albums ever by Rolling Stone.

McDonald's strip-search hoax turned into movie without victim's knowledge

The perverse tale of blind obedience to authority first unfolded eight years ago in a McDonald’s restaurant in Mount Washington, Ky., just south of Louisville, when an 18-year-old employee was subjected to a humiliating strip search orchestrated by a prank caller pretending to be a cop.

Now it may be coming to a theater near you.

“Compliance,” a movie based on the McDonald’s strip-search hoax case, premiered last month at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah and has been acquired by a major distributor, which expects to release it this summer.

Dozens of film-goers walked out of the debut and hecklers later screamed at director Craig Zobel that his 90-minute film was exploitative and misogynistic.

“Rape is not entertainment,” one of them yelled at a question-and-answer session with the director.

But critics generally have raved about the movie, which includes scenes with nudity and degradation.

Hollywood Reporter called it “a suspenseful psychological drama for viewers prepared to tolerate its extremes,” while bestmoviesevernews.com said it “works wonderfully as a horror suspense film without any gore or blood.”

Distributor Magnolia Pictures would not let Zobel or others connected with the movie talk to a reporter last week, but he has said he was inspired to make the movie after reading about it.

“I read the article and couldn’t shake it,” he said. “It raised so many questions about why they went along with what they were told to do.”

Louisville lawyer Ann Oldfather, who represented the victim, Louise Ogborn, said her former client didn’t know about the movie until she was contacted last week by a reporter.

Oldfather said the director had a moral obligation to approach Ogborn before making the film.

“Anybody who wanted to be responsible in telling this story should have made an effort to talk to the person who went through it,” Oldfather said.

The Courier-Journal reported how Ogborn, a minimum-wage employee and high-school senior, was methodically searched and forced to strip after a man pretending to be a police officer called the Mount Washington McDonald’s on April 9, 2004, and accused her of stealing a customer's purse.

Following the caller's instructions, an assistant manager took away Ogborn’s clothes and cell phone. The assistant manager later called in her fiance, who also followed the caller’s orders in forcing Ogborn to perform a series of humiliating tasks and ultimately sexually abusing her.

Ogborn’s ordeal lasted for three hours, until a janitor realized the caller was a fraud.

The alleged caller, David R. Stewart, a former prison guard who lived in the Florida panhandle, was charged with impersonating a police officer and soliciting crimes but was acquitted at trial. Police suspected him of making as many 130 similar calls to restaurants and stores around the country.

Zobel changed the names for his movie and set it in a fictional “Chick-Wich” restaurant in Ohio. But he said in several interviews with online publications that it was based on the Bullitt County case and that the “weirder and yuckier the things in our movie, the more likely it is that they really happened.”

Ogborn, who won a $6.1 million jury verdict against McDonald’s that was later settled for an undisclosed sum, has since married and had a child. She didn’t respond to requests for comment.

Stewart’s lawyer, Steve Romines, said his client hadn’t known about the movie.

McDonald’s corporate spokesman, William Whitman, didn’t respond to a request for comment and neither did its Louisville lawyer, Margaret Keane.

Legal experts, including Bill Hollander, an intellectual property lawyer who is managing partner of the Louisville firm of Wyatt Tarrant & Combs, said filmmakers may fictionalize someone’s life story without their consent, although they could be sued for defamation or invasion of privacy if they knowingly or recklessly get the facts wrong.

Jennifer Rothman, a professor at Loyola Law School in Los Angeles who has worked in the movie industry, said filmmakers customarily buy story rights from a subject to avoid subsequent litigation and criticism.

In an interview on New York Magazine’s entertainment website “Vulture,” Zobel admits that his movie, which isn’t rated, is challenging to watch, even for him. “It’s not for everybody.”

He said he didn’t make it just for controversy but knew it would bother some people.

“So beat me up,” he said. “I am not going to apologize.”

He has described the film as about “the danger of letting go of one’s own common-sense belief system and giving it over to authority. I think that happens all the time, and the consequences, like in this movie, are huge.”

Ogborn’s character is played by actress Dreama Walker, who has appeared in the teen TV drama “Gossip Girl” and played Clint Eastwood’s granddaughter in the movie “Gran Torino.”

The Courier-Journal was told that Walker wasn’t available for an interview. But she told a Los Angeles Times movie blogger that she studied transcripts and interviews from the McDonald’s case to get her part right.

“My whole thing for playing the character was that she wasn't an idiot,” she said. “She was just really young, very naive and was in these high-stakes circumstances where she thought she was going to lose her job if she didn't do as she was told.

“We all think we would react in a certain way, react boldly,” Walker said. “Sometimes that's not really the case at all."

Oldfather said Ogborn is trying to put her ordeal behind her and most likely will never see “Compliance.”

“My feeling is the last thing she would ever want to do is watch a movie about something that was hell for her,” Oldfather said.

Admittedly I didn't follow a lot of what was going at on at Sundance this year so this is the first time I've heard of this movie but I am familiar with the actual incident and what in the actual fuck? It's really shitty that this girl found out about this movie after it was in the can, screened, and picked up for distribution from a reporter and not from anyone actually involved. If you are not familiar with the incident I've included a clip from when it was on 20/20.

Grant Gustin: 'Glee' Fans Haven't Seen The Last Of Sebastian Smythe

Sebastian Smythe had even his Dalton Academy Warblers turning against him after throwing a rock salt slushie in the face of Blaine Anderson on Tuesday night's "Glee," and Grant Gustin, who plays the show's new bad boy, said fans haven't seen the last of him.
"I have filmed some since the Michael Jackson episode," he told AccessHollywood.com's Laura Saltman on Wednesday morning when he visited the Access studios. "I'm in the process of filming an episode right now with the cast. He's got a fun little return. I will not tell you what it is, but he's got a fun return."
Grant's episode was headline-making for a host of reasons and not just because of the possibility he's blinded his crush Blaine, with the slushie-with-a-mean-twist.
"Sebastian meant to hit Kurt [Hummel] and Blaine jumps in the way," Grant said. "I have no idea romantically where that storyline is going. I'm on the edge of my seat, just like everyone else, waiting to see where that goes."

It also was the Michael Jackson-themed tribute episode and Grant said he found out early on in his "Glee" career that he was taking on a much larger role in the installment in the high school-based drama.
"I was actually in Virginia at the time. I was taking a short little break and I was visiting family after I had finished filming my first episode and I got a call asking to be in the studio like, the next day and when they told me what I was singing, I freaked out," Grant told Laura. "'I Want You Back' was one of the songs that was cut and that was one of my favorite songs growing up -- my mom's favorite song when she was a kid. So that was very surreal and I'm still stoked that I got to do it.""I Want You Back," may not have made the show - it's available on iTunes now - but Grant is hopeful one day fans will be able to see the scene.

"It was pretty much just The Warblers being, 'Look how awesome we are!' Pretty much just trying to scare the New Directions into thinking we're better," he said.
One of his songs that did make Tuesday's broadcast was "Smooth Criminal," opposite Naya Rivera as Santana.
"That was definitely... my favorite day of filming," Grant told Laura.

"Glee" is Grant's first venture into television and he revealed that Darren Criss, who plays Blaine - and was a "Glee" newcomer at one point himself, actually played big brother during his first day at work.
"My first day, Darren kind of gave me TV 101, basically. I had never been on a TV set, so he kind of gave me the lowdown on everyone's job, what was going on, but he was very, very clear that he wasn't demeaning me, he just wanted to give me the advice that he thought I needed," Grant explained. "And I was like, 'No! Please, bro! Give me the advice.'
"Since then, they've all kind of let me do my own thing and I sit back and watch them and learn as much as I can from the cast," he said.

"Glee" airs Tuesday's at 8/7c on FOX.

PETA Protests Liam Neeson And 'The Grey' After He Admits Eating Wolf Meat While Filming!!!

Liam Neeson's latest movie is facing a boycott after the actor admitted eating wolf stew to prepare for the role.

The Irish actor has the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals up in arms over his method acting for The Grey in which he plays the leader of a group being hunted by wolves after their plane crashes in the Arctic.

"It was very gamey," he said while promoting the hit movie. "But I'm Irish, so I'm used to odd stews. I can take it. Just throw a lot of carrots and onions in there and I'll call it dinner."

Neeson, 59, further infuriated PETA by saying that while others got sick he "went up for seconds."

In a statement, the animal rights group said: "Neeson's stance on kindness to animals is sorely out of step with the rest of the world."

They then urged movie-goers: "Don't just shy away. Run away from The Grey."

While most of the wolf scenes were shot using special effects, PETA claims the film's director, Joe Carnahan, ordered wolf carcasses from a trapper for some of the footage.

"Many animals caught in traps chew off their own limbs in order to escape," said Jane Dollinger, a spokeswoman for PETA.

"These animals go on to die of gangrene or other secondary infections, sometimes leaving nursing puppies abandoned to fend for themselves."

Despite the outrage The Grey has been a box office hit.

Take This Waltz trailer starring Michelle Williams and lesser ppl

Take This Waltz, directed by Sarah Polley. Starring Michelle Williams, Seth Rogan, Sarah Silverman & Luke Kirby.

The film stars Michelle Williams and Seth Rogen as a young couple who struggle with monogamy and fidelity, as the former is torn between her husband and a new man. Sarah Silverman and Luke Kirby round out the cast that has been described as sexually frank, somewhat explicit, but bracingly honest about the complex emotions that arise out of sex and love. Featuring a soundtrack heavy on Canadian legend Leonard Cohen (not surprising, given the film's title), our A-grade review from TIFF called the movie "a modernist version of a late '60s or early '70s relationship film" that delivers "a knockout punch."

No release date yet, but Magnolia Pictures is expected to unspool the film this summer.

Katy Perry performed her first U.S. concert since splitting from hubby Russell Brand in Indianapolis, Ind., Saturday night, delivering a party-starting nine-song set for guests at the DIRECTV Super Saturday Night Hosted by Mark Cuban and Peyton Manning.

And the pop star seemed to have Super Bowl fever: Sporting a glittery, football-themed top and high-cut grey spandex shorts, Perry kicked off the show at 11:45 p.m. by bursting through a banner emblazoned with her name, just like a hometown gridiron hero.

"Who else is excited for Madonna?" she asked later on, referring to Queen of Pop's Sunday halftime show. "That's the only reason that I came!" (Madonna's daughter, Lourdes, was spotted at Perry's concert.)

Perry, 27, made no references to Brand, 36, throughout the set, but she did jokingly give a shout out to one special fellow who was on her mind. "This one goes out to Tim Tebow," she said, before launching into her single "Peacock."

Shaquille O'Neal, Neil Patrick Harris and partner David Burtka were among the celeb guests who caught her set from the side of the stage, while Chris Meloni and Scott Wolf made appearances.

Post-show, Perry partied with her pals in a roped-off area in the center of the room. Says an insider, "She was having the best time and was in such a great mood."
