Celebrities Get Paid (a lot) to Tweet

$

"The weirdest thing about the rumor that Kim Kardashian gets paid $10,000 for a Twitter endorsement is that it’s true. (Recent plugs have been for ShoeDazzle.com and CVS.) The biggest player in the pay-to-tweet market is Ad.ly, a social-media advertorial clearinghouse pairing brands with celebs to inject highly personalized advertising into their Twitter streams.

The pay rate for endorsing companies like Old Navy, Toyota, Best Buy, and American Airlines is determined by the size of a celeb’s following and how that group responds to his tweets with shares and retweets.

On that sliding scale, Snoop Dogg (6.3 million followers) is in the top tier of payments, on the upside of $8,000 apiece, while Paula Abdul (2.2 million followers) falls somewhere in the middle, in the $5,000-each range, and Whitney Port (800,000 followers) falls in the bottom tier, making around $2,500 per tweet.

But there are outliers. When Ad.ly introduced self-destructing Charlie Sheen to Twitter, he was paid about $50,000 per tweet. It was worth it. Sheen’s tweet for Internships.com generated 95,333 clicks in the first hour and 450,000 clicks in 48 hours, created a worldwide trending topic out of #tigerbloodintern, attracted 82,148 internship applications from 181 countries, and added 1 million additional visits to Internships.com.

Of course Charlie didn’t write those tweets himself. No celebrity does. Instead, they’re composed by hungry young tweet ghostwriters whose job it is to broadcast a celebrity’s voice in 140 characters. Says Ad.ly CEO Arnie Gullov-Singh, “Consumers react positively to organic authentic messaging.”

Daisy Lowe has a made-up crush on Olly "twat in a hat" Murs. He doesn't know who she is.

After breaking up with her long term boyfriend, the Doctor Who star Matt Smith (nah, still together), Daisy Lowe was reported to have set her sights on the pop singer Olly Murs.

Unfortunately, Murs, 27, who was a runner-up on The X Factor, is unfamiliar with the charms of the 23-year-old model, pictured.

“I’ve heard she has a crush on me, but I don’t have a clue who she is,” he admits to Mandrake at The Muppets premiere at The May Fair hotel. “Is she an actress?”

To make matters worse, the singer is wary of antagonising Smith. “I’m a big Doctor Who fan, so I wouldn’t want to upset him,” he says. Despite this, Murs does not rule out meeting Lowe. “I’ll need to see a picture, but I’m open to it,” he ventures. Who says romance is dead?

Kate Price wins a live debate at Cambridge University

Katie Price, aka fierce bitch, Wins Live Debate

Katie Price has done something truly shocking – she’s won a live debate at Cambridge University.

That’s right, you read that correctly. The 33-year-old glamour model defied all odds yesterday to win a highbrow debate at the famous university’s union, which has previously held discussions with the likes of US President Ronald Reagan and Prime Minister Winston.

Price was debating against Boris Johnson’s younger sister Rachel, editor of The Lady, and journalist Liz Jones as she opposed the motion: ‘This house believes the only limit to female success is female ambition.’

And despite forgetting her lines and at times appearing to struggle with reading her notes, the topless model went on to receive a loud cheer for the Cambridge Union at the end of her ten-minute speech.

Speaking about the idea of female success, Price told the Cambridge students that her motto is: ‘There is no such thing as can’t, because I can.’

In response to Price’s attempts, Johnson made some narky comments about the model’s career, saying: ‘The sky is the limit or in your case a ten part series on Sky called Katie.’

Ms Johnson then added: ‘Katie Price’s novels are for real lovers of literature.’

Still, the last laugh was on Price as she was revealed to be the winner of the debate.

Before the event, President of the Cambridge Union, Katie Lam, explained her decision to invite Price to speak. She said: ‘I decided to invite Katie Price because she’s a prominent public figure who is very popular among and represents the aspirations of a large number of women and girls in the UK, and I thought her perspective would be a valuable one to add to the debate.’

Wonders will never cease!

Source

ALSO, Katie is officially coming to America, bitches! She has just signed a 3 year reality show contract with E! that will be announced soon. Fox has also bought the rights to her first best selling autobiography, Being Jordan. Haters to the left.

A poor excuse for a book post.

Barnes & Noble, Destroyer of Indie Bookstores, Is Now Printed Books' Last Great Champion

For years, Barnes & Noble was the scourge of independent booksellers everywhere, driving them out of business with its strip mall superstores. Then along came Amazon with its bookstore-killing Kindle and all of a sudden Barnes & Noble was recast as the last great hope of (paper and ink) book lovers everywhere. When this magazine visited the subject in 2010, it was already clear that the company, and its main brick-and-mortar competitor Borders, were in the fight for their lives as more and more consumers turned to the Internet. Borders never jumped on the technology bandwagon and last year it finally succumbed. In a last-ditch Hail Mary of its own, Barnes & Noble launched its Nook e-reader in late 2009. Now it's in the home stretch, explains today's Times—either the Nook succeeds in saving the company's physical bookstores by propping up its bottom line, or else they too are gone the way of the dinosaurs.

In the past two years, the chain, headed up by Dallas native William Lynch Jr., has already shed almost half its bookstores, begun reconfiguring the remaining outlets (he plans to phase out the CD and DVD sections), and plowed millions into Nook's 300-person Silicon Valley operations. That investment apears to be paying off. While the Kindle accounted for nearly 90 percent of all e-books sold several years ago, it's now closer to the 60 mark, says the Times, while the latecomer Nook has secured a beachhead, about 27 percent of the e-book market. Now it's for Barnes & Noble to leverage its physical stores—a major source of impulse purchases—in conjunction with the Nook, increasing print and digital sales.

All this is tentative good news for publishers, one of whom compared an Amazon-controlled marketplace to Cormac McCarthy's uber-dark bestseller The Road: "The post-apocalyptic world of publishing, with publishers pushing shopping carts down Broadway." After all, Barnes & Noble's survival is not only important for printed books but for the publishers churning them out as well, since Amazon's direct-to-consumer approach threatens their very existence.

But investors don't yet seem convinced. Barnes & Nobles has consistently underperformed Wall Street's expectations these past several years, and earlier this month the company's stock slid 17 percent on the latest round of disappointing numbers. Yet Lynch maintains that, "had we not launched devices and spent the money we invested in the Nook, investors and analysts would have said, 'Barnes & Noble is crazy, and they’re going to go away.'" At least for the moment, there remains a sliver of a chance that Barnes & Noble will scrape through and save printed books for the next generation.

Kelly laughs off lesbian rumor and remains single....

Kelly Clarkson has revealed that she finds it funny that people think she is a lesbian.

The Grammy Award-winning singer is currently single.

The lack of male presence in the 29-year-old’s life has fuelled speculation that she is gay, but Clarkson isn’t put off by such rumours.

“I don’t think it’s harmful at all,” Stuff.co.nz quoted her as telling the Mirror.

“But I just don’t know why people think I am. I never kiss women. I find it funny. Also I’m such a vocal person, I’ve never hidden much. So I don’t understand why they don’t take me on my word. I find that a little bit annoying. But if people think I’m gay, I don’t really care.

“I’m a kinda selfish person who right now enjoys being single, enjoys the fact that I can work as much as I do, and not really have to answer to anyone,” she added.

Blue Valentine's mystery singer revealed

Voice of unreleased 1970 soul demo from Blue Valentine soundtrack is 62-year-old Nannie Sharpe from Virginia

This movie is so underrated, I can't even #GOSLINGSHOULDHAVETHEACADEMYAWARD

2010, BLUE VALENTINE

The mysterious singer of You and Me, the sleeper hit from 2010 film Blue Valentine, has been discovered in Virginia, four decades after she recorded the demo as Penny and the Quarters. "It's been 40 years since I've heard it," said Nannie Sharpe. "I'm shocked and elated."

You and Me plays an integral part in Blue Valentine, soundtracking the onscreen relationship of Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams with electric guitar and lo-fi soul. But the film-makers scarcely knew anything about it; they got the track from Numero Group, a Chicago reissue label that found it on cassette at a yard sale.

That tape, from the estate of studio owner Clem Price in Columbus, Ohio, had a cryptic note in pencil: You and Me was recorded by "Penny and the Quarters". But who were the Quarters? Who was Penny?

Her name is Nannie Sharpe, née Coulter, nicknamed Penny. She is 62. She lives in Woodbridge, Virginia. And in 1970, in a one-take rehearsal, she sang You and Me with her brothers at Price's Harmonic Sounds Studio. "I didn't even realise they were recording," Preston told the Other Paper (via TwentyFourBit), which broke the story. "We were just trying to get ourselves on record."

Sharpe and her brothers, Preston, Johnny and Donald, began singing at Harmonic after answering a newspaper advert. "We'd sing all the time, in church, in the house. We'd stand around, helping whoever's turn it was to wash dishes that week, singing together," she said. "[At Harmonic] they were auditioning singers, starting a label ... We would go over there every Saturday morning and stay all day, from 7am to 4pm. I remember thinking: 'Do we have to stay all day?'"

Mostly, they sang backup for other Harmonic artists. But one day Price asked songwriter Jay Robinson to work with them. "To polish us up," Sharpe said. "I remember he used to emphasise to us to enunciate those words, and he liked the phrase 'my, my, my, my' to illustrate."

Robinson wrote a song called You and Me – which includes several "my my my mys" – and gave it to the Sharpes to sing. Their rehearsal was recorded. The song was never released. One day it was found on a tape. And although the Columbus Dispatch traced the track to Robinson, he had died in 2009, and his widow didn't know who sang on the recording. "I remembered my husband told me he had went in the studio and redid a song he made – with a young girl," she said. "That day ... he only had a penny and a quarter in his pocket, so that was how he named the group ... I didn't know who Penny was, and something in her voice arose some jealousy in me."

The mystery of Penny and the Quarters was finally solved in June, when Sharpe's daughter, Jayma, heard the story from some friends. She went online, researched the song, and knew it had to be her mum. The texts came flying. "It was all, 'OMG exclamation point, exclamation point'," Nannie Sharpe said. "Bringing the lost to light is a beautiful thing," said Numero Group's co-owner, Rob Sevier.

At the time of the interview, Sharpe's family had yet to see Blue Valentine.

New Memoir to Reveal All Sorts of Sordid, Sexual Details About Old Hollywood

Scotty Bowers, an octogenarian who personally "prefers the sexual company of women," was a twentysomething former Marine in the late forties pumping gas near Hollywood Boulevard when Walter Pidgeon, a Canadian actor and future president of the Screen Actors Guild, drove up in a Lincoln coupe and propositioned him. Bowers accepted (for $20, it's implied) and so started a several-decades-long career as the go-to guy for any of old Hollywood's closeted stars (along with some of their heterosexual peers) in need of "matchmaking" services, if you get the drift. Bowers's memoir, Full Service: My Adventures in Hollywood and the Secret Sex Lives of the Stars, comes out in two weeks and is, per the Times, "a lurid, no-detail-too-excruciating account of a sexual Zelig who (if you believe him) trawled an X-rated underworld for over three decades without getting caught." Read on for some of the names and sordid details strategically dropped into the paper's review.

Why Bowers Agreed to the Book: "I finally said yes because I’m not getting any younger and all of my famous tricks are dead by now. The truth can’t hurt them anymore."

How Many Female Lovers He Set Katharine Hepburn Up With: Over 150.

Publisher Implicated in Bowers's Old Hollywood Sexcapades: Alfred P. Knopf

One of Several Publishers Who Turned Down Full Service: Knopf

Which Actress Would Disagree That Bowers Wasn't a Pimp, According to the Book: Lucille Ball

Why: One of the people Bowers was connecting with (other) bedmates was Ball's then-husband, Desi Arnaz.

Why Browers Asked Tennessee Williams Not to Publish an Article on Him: "He made me sound like a mad queen flying over Hollywood Boulevard on a broomstick directing all the queens in town."

Other Famous Stars' Names Mentioned: Cary Grant, Rock Hudson, Vivien Leigh, Spencer Tracy, and Cole Porter

Back in the United States to see friends and support a charity, Katy Perry strolled down a red carpet for the first time since her split with Russell Brand.

The singer rocked her blue hair and donned a cocktail dress with metal studs at the overnight Friday event for Givelove.org, which provides sustainable low-income solutions Haiti earthquake victims.

Markus Molinari, a designer for J. Molinari Jewelry, told PEOPLE that Perry was doing “amazing” and she was in town to support his cause because “that’s what friends do.”

At the event at the 1 OAK club in the Mirage Hotel, Perry hung out in a VIP booth and watched her pal Ferras perform.

“She was really tame,” a source said. “She was really just drinking a few drinks and chilling with her friends.”

Earlier, Perry went to Stack restaurant, joining a table of 18 and dining on steak, seafood and red wine and listening to another performance by Ferras on the piano. Perry was seen clapping, cheering and swinging a napkin the air.

The singer is back from doing shows in the Philippines and Indonesia.
