On Pillow Talk: “It is about sex, there is obviously sex in a relationship. It’s not the whole incentive of the song though, the actual intent of the song is even though you have great times in a relationship, you have really bad times as well but that’s what makes it worth while because you learn things and you go through experiences that bring you closer together. That’s the actual intent of the song. Obviously you have sex and sometimes you fight during the relationship, so I did mention that in the song but yeah, it’s not solely about sex.”

She says the post was interpreted wrongly, and it was not about her coming out but about people not needing to label themselves: “That was really misconstrued, that whole thing. A lot of people took it as me coming out, but that’s not what I was trying to do. I was literally doing it just to say that you don’t have to label your sexuality; so many kids these days are not labeling their sexuality and I think that’s so cool.”

She also says that “You don’t have to label yourself, because it’s not set in stone. It’s so fluid and there’s so much pressure on kids to label themselves and say, 'This is what I am, this is what I like.' I was just trying to say that it’s unnecessary; you don’t need to label yourself. I guess it came off the wrong way, because then everyone labeled me as gay. That’s not what I was trying to say. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, of course! But I did that literally just to say you don’t have to label yourself, and then everyone was like, 'Lily-Rose Depp comes out as gay!' I’m saying it doesn’t matter! It’s not anybody’s business, because I am going to date whoever I’m going to date. I was just saying, kids don’t need to label their sexualities. It’s not that big of a deal."

On the lack of diversity in SoCal:"I have never seen a show that took place in Southern California and portrayed people the way it is in Southern California. The prom king in my high school was Chinese and the prom queen was Japanese. We just didn’t think about it. ... It wasn’t until I realized that every other show is set in some nebulous town on the East Coast or Midwest where everyone is white and Protestant… How boring is that? And that’s not truth. That’s not my truth."

On marginalization:"I remember as a kid living in Southern California and every TV show was set in that typical East Coast high school. And I remember seeing a high school near me that looked like that and thinking, “Oh, a real high school!” That’s not feeling marginalized. Now, if I thought about the way my school looked, imagine being a Filipino person who’s like “I’m not a real American because I’m not on TV.” We’re a nation of immigrants. That’s what being an American is."
