Raymond Cruz’s Journey From the Gang Violence of East L.A. to ‘Better Call Saul’s’ Tuco Salamanca

On Tuco: "I’ve never looked at Tuco as being a bad guy. I’ve always seen him as the hero of his own story, and someone who has to defend what he’s fighting for, and who will go to any length to protect what he needs to protect. Jimmy’s able to reason with him in the desert because he’s able to appeal to his sense of justice. The way that Tuco looks at things is fair. The thing that happens later on in Breaking Bad is he gets affected by the blue meth, and the drugs completely distort his perception of things, so the drug heightens his emotions. But normally he has a huge heart. He’s like a ferocious pit bull, and you have to be careful when you cross his path."

On family history: "I come from a long line of criminals. I have a lot of relatives that are hardcore gangbangers—18th Street, Barrio South Gate. I have uncles that go way back to old, old Los Angeles gangs."

On witnessing gang violence as a kid: "For us, violence was a daily occurrence. I saw someone get shot in front of me at point blank range and die. The brains came out the back of his head. I was only 12. There was one incident that I could relate directly to Breaking Bad and Tuco. When I was 13, the cops were called to our neighborhood because there was a guy who was high on PCP and running around naked. He jumped on the hood of the police car and stomped in the windshield barefoot, and he was completely manic; so amused and enthralled by this. We were sitting on the porch watching all this. It was this weird display of superhuman strength."

Lady Gaga for Britney Spears - Quicksand (Circus, 2008)

At the height of her popularity Lady Gaga penned a track titled Quicksand for Britney's comeback record, Circus, released in 2008. In addition, Gaga's background vocals can be heard throughout the song. She had this to say about the collaboration back in 2009: "She’s a nice girl – I just feel very honoured that she wanted to sing my song. I used to scream for her in Times Square and now I work for her. When I was 13 she was the most provocative performer of my time. I love her so much!".

Harry Styles for Ariana Grande - A Little Bit of Your Heart (My Everything, 2014)

One Direction's Harry Styles penned a heart-felt ballad for Grande's sophomore album released last year. Showcasing both his writing talents and Ariana's vocals, this discreet yet powerful love song shows the immense potentials of both artists. Ariana recently performed the song at the Grammys.

Katy Perry for Iggy Azalea - Black Widow (New Classic, 2014)

Originally recorded for Katy's album Prism, she then decided to pass the song to then up and coming rapper Iggy Azalea, feeling that it was too simmilar to another song in the album, Dark Horse. The song was released as a single in the summer of 2014 becoming a hit around the world and peaking at no3 on the Billboard charts.

Britney Spears for Selena Gomez - Whiplash (When The Sun Goes Down, 2011)

Originally written and recorded by Spears for her album Circus, the track got excluded from the final tracklist and a couple of years later it ended up on Selena's album! The song was cited as one of the album's highlights by critics upon its release.

Lady Gaga for Jennifer Lopez - Hypnotico and Invading My Mind (Love?, 2011)

Gaga continues her writing work for pop divas with two club-anthem songs found on Jennifer Lopez' comeback record Love?, released in May of 2011. Lady G is also credited as co-producer on Hypnotico.

Kesha for Britney Spears - Till The World Ends (Femme Fatale, 2011)

Kesha is credited for writing one of Britney's biggest recent hits, the electronic-infused dance smash Till The World ends which achieved worldwide sucess in 2011. Kesha had this to say about the writing process and why she decided to give the song to Britney rather than keep it for herself: "I've never been more proud of anything in my career... It really solidifies me as a songwriter in the pop music world, which is what I consider myself first and foremost. So it actually is really, really exciting for me when I hear [Britney] sing it. Like, when I hear my own songs on the radio I have to kind of turn it down or change the radio or whatever. When I hear that, I fucking blow the speakers out and I order everybody to dance." Kesha was also featured on the official remixed version of the song along with Nicki Minaj which peaked at no3 on the charts. Here's Kesha herself jamming to the song in the club yesterday!

Justin Timberlake for Rihanna - Cold Case Love (Rated R, 2009)

Justin Timberlake co-wrote one of Rihanna's best unreleased songs, the emotional Cold Case Love for her 2009 more mature and darker record entitled Rated R. With lyrics that seem to refer to Rihanna's infamous relationship with Chris Brown, the song definitely positions itself as one of the album's highlights. Timberlake spoke about the song and how he is definitely a fan of Rihanna's music: “I think she’s got, like, a million people writing songs for her, but the ones that we worked on she’s grown up a little bit and she has things that she can say. So that’s what we tried to do — craft things that are that of a young woman. She broke onto the scene so hard with the last record — to have that many songs on the charts is impressive. I think that the smartest thing she’s doing is not trying to emulate what she did but move forward … I’ve heard some of the stuff on the record and it’s awesome.”

Katy Perry for Nicki Minaj - Get On Your Knees (The Pinkprint, 2014)

Finally Katy Perry in an unlikely move becomes one of the few pop acts who has recently worked with both Iggy Azalea and Nicki Minaj, as one of her tracks can be found on Nicki's latest album.

Meghan Trainor for Fifth Harmony - Sledgehammer (Reflection, 2015)

Keeping things recent one of last year's breakout stars All About The Bass singer Meghan Trainor can also be credited for giving the first bonnafide hit to rising pop ground Fifth Harmony.

The Musketeers Mini Roundup: Reviews, Previews & Dirty Gifs

sass

Den of Geek kicks off their review of Episode 5 (The Return) by arguing that TheMusketeers' move from Sunday night to Friday seemed like a worrying downgrade at the time, but given the cancellation of the bigger-budgeted disappointment Atlantis, it might have saved this show from a similar fate. While The Musketeers continues to get lukewarm ratings, their numbers are consistent enough to call the show something of a success, which is why it has been renewed for a third series only halfway through the second.

DoG believes that the vaguely-historical swashbuckler has shown greatly improved quality this series with its further exploration into the characters and the stronger stories that have been offered up. I'm going to politely disagree with that and say that with the exception of Porthos's side-story with Samara, and now this episode, it's been a bit of a mess character-wise -- particularly where Aramis is concerned.

With that speculation out of the way, DoG dives into the episode itself the way Athos dove into Milady last night: head-first and full of enthusiasm.
valentines

The review notes that the "road trip" aspect to this episode was a welcome return to the antics of the Musketeers themselves, given that the show had started to make them feel like side-characters in their own story. But obviously this was Athos's big development episode, with an unwilling return to the lands he technically still owns where the perpetually shitfaced Comte is then forced to face the villagers he abandoned when he rode off on his horse as his wife was being executed and apparently just fucked right off to Paris to join the Musketeers. (Can... we talk about that? Seriously he never looked back at any point?)

The hypocrisy of Athos's desires to be seen as a hero, while abandoning people who genuinely need him and to whom he was born to protect, was called out by just about everyone in this episode, and rightfully so. Meanwhile, Tom Burke did a good job of squinting at everyone, yelling, taking off his shirt, and haughtily flinging his cape-scarf around his neck while generally acting like a bit of an asshole. Nah, just kidding -- he did a good job. And looked hot.

Porthos is still trying to get Treville to just tell him who his parents are, but Treville continues to shut it down in what is probably the most annoying sub-plot of the series. Especially given that we know Porthos will find out eventually and Treville's reluctance just seems like dickishness, rather than a sincere desire to protect the cuddliest Musketeer from an unsavory truth.

DoG also takes a minute to point out that Treville's demotion continues to lack any real impact or gravity, and that it makes no sense because it seems like nobody replaced him and it's odd to just demote a Captain and then give him literal shit-raking duty. More than anything, it seems like a disservice to Hugo Speer to goss over a major point of development for his character.

And finally, speaking of major points of development, DoG finds itself conflicted where Athos's former fiance, almost-sister-in-law, and potential Stage 5 Clinger, Catherine, is concerned. Should we feel sorry for her? Should we be worried about her? Should Milady be worried about her? The answers to all of those questions seem to be yes, especially given the episode's clunkiest moment of dialogue where Athos all but draws a map for her on how to find (and kill) Milady if she needs to. Many fans suspect that the writers are going to use Catherine to partially redeem Milady -- either by implying that Catherine "let" the rape and/or murder happen, or else just by making her seem jealous and crazy. But that doesn't really excuse or explain the 27 other murders that Milady comitted post-Thomas, so as much as we all think she's a delightfully evil Queen, we can't really expect a full-blown story that explains away her guilt. But hate-sex will and should still happen. For science or whatever.

Overall, the Den liked the episode, but worry that next week will be a return to the Musketeers-as-supporting-players vibe.

Since the BBC continually fails to upload the trailers for upcoming episodes of this show, we'll have to rely on the summary provided by CarterMatt:

Renowned astronomer Marmion gathers the royal household to his impressive observatory in a transformed old fort to watch a solar eclipse. The Musketeers and Rochefort escort them but could never have predicted the twist in fate that ensues and the impossible choices that must be made.

“Who is Marmion really and what is his game? The Musketeers are forced into the fight of their lives with dramatic consequences. Will they accept Milady’s help despite their mistrust of her? It might be their only chance to save the king, queen and themselves."

From the trailer, Milady also appears to be involved somehow. Speaking of which -- the flashbacks to the field romping and murder have made things even more confusing, because they've made Maimie McCoy look so rough this series, and yet this week she returned to looking dew-y and gorgeous. That goes for pretty much all of the women this time around, to be honest. I'm happy to have prime mancandy every week, but not at the expense of proper wigs and makeup.

So -- what did you think of last night's episode, ONTD? Are you happy with where the show is going as a whole?

bitch

Divathos thanks you for your time.

Jamie Dornan slammed for his poor acting in 50 Shades of Grey

$

He basically gets dragged by almost every film critic for his wooden & dull performance in Fifty Shades of Grey.

- Rolling Stone described Dornan as a "brick wall," there's no chemistry between him and Dakota, plus he seems to have no idea who or what he is playing.

- NY Times wrote that there's nothing mischievous nor mysterious about Dornan's Grey and that he "succeeds mainly in eliciting pity"& he has "the bland effect of a model, by which I mean a figure made of balsa wood or Lego." (lol omg!)

- Vulture thinks Dornan is simply not believable as Christian Grey: "With his fluffed-up hair and pert, pretty little face, Grey looks more like a natural bottom than a top. Although I did grow to appreciate his modest, unshowy acting, it’s clear he’s not sending much heat her way."

Meanwhile, Dakota Johnson has been repeatedly praised for her portrayal of Anastasia Steele.
