Nicki Minaj talks about her teenage abortion and police brutality

Nicki Minaj rings in the new year on the cover of Rolling Stone. In the skin-baring shoot by famed photographer Terry Richardson, she talks abortion, police brutality & Yeezy.

ON HER DECISION TO HAVE AN ABORTION: “I thought I was going to die. I was a teenager. It was the hardest thing I’d ever gone through. It’d be contradictory if I said I wasn’t pro-choice. I wasn’t ready. I didn’t have anything to offer a child.”

ON HONING HER CRAFT: “I hate when artists brag about not writing rhymes, or doing things really quickly, and then it’s not great. It’s ill when Jay Z or Wayne say it, because the results are great. When they’re not? Sit your ass down and figure out something new to say!”

ON THE DEATHS OF MIKE BROWN AND ERIC GARNER: “It’s sickening, and I’ve been reading so many people saying, ‘Why are we surprised?’ That’s what’s really sad: that we should somehow be used to being treated like animals. It’s gotten to the point where people feel like there’s no accountability: If you are law enforcement and you do something to a black person, you can get away with it.”

ON KANYE WEST: “He was the unofficial spokesman for hip-hop, and he got torn apart. And now you haven’t heard him speaking about these last couple things, and it’s sad. Because how many times can you be made to feel horrible for caring about your people before you say, ‘Fuck it, it’s not worth it, let me live my life because I’m rich, and why should I give a fuck?'”

Taylor Swift's “1989” Becomes Best-Selling album of 2014 Beating Frozen

$

Taylor Swift's "1989" is the best-selling album of 2014.

Going into the final sales week of 2014, Taylor Swift’s “1989” trailed the blockbuster “Frozen” soundtrack by roughly 120,000-130,000 units. If it could make up that ground, it would claim 2014’s largest sales tally.

It made up that ground–and then some.

According to weekly sales data from Hits Daily Double, which should differ only slightly from the more authoritative Billboard/Nielsen Soundscan tally, Swift’s “1989” moved approximately 328,000 copies and won the Christmas week sales race. Enough to lift the album’s cumulative total to roughly 3.66 million, the weekly sum also thrusts “1989” ahead of “Frozen” in the yearly race.

“Frozen,” which claimed a year-to-date total of roughly 3.46 million going into the final frame, moved in the neighborhood of 57,000 Christmas week units. With a yearly total of 3.52 million, it ranks as 2014’s second-best-seller.

Particularly impressive about Taylor Swift’s “1989” ascent to #1 is the fact that it did not hit shelves until October 27. The “Frozen” soundtrack, as monstrous as it was, had the entire year to pad its total.

Elle U.K. editor-in-chief defends Kim Kardashian

Snagging the cover for ELLE U.K.'s January 2015 issue, Kim Kardashian has no signs of slowing down her hustle for more fame. There have been numerous criticisms about why she was picked for the cover, yet the magazine didn't back down and went with it. In a new blogpost, ELLE U.K. editor-in-chief Lorraine Candy defends Kim Kardashian and why she was the perfect choice to helm their 'Confidence Issue'.

"For me, confidence is about finding your voice and making it heard. This is not about shouting louder, or indeed judging those women who feel the need to do so; it's about finding out how to persuade yourself you can achieve whatever you want to. [...] If you have found your confidence, it is important you support other women as they find theirs. As we put this Confidence Issue together and news of Kim Kardashian West's place on its cover was leaked, I noted some people questioning our choice, querying Kim's credentials as a successful woman and ours as a feminist magazine. I wish women would not judge other women in this critical way. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but for me, Kim's success should be applauded, not sneered at or, indeed, denigrated. She is the perfect face for an issue devoted to self-belief. She has built a staggeringly influential business empire and inspired many young women to be more confident about their bodies. And let us remember, no one woman can embody all the hopes, beliefs and ideals of everywoman."

"It would be great to recognize the value of what each of us does individually rather than continually comparing ourselves—and then illogically deciding somehow we don't measure up. I think 'if she can do it, I can too' is a better approach, and I hope that when we next carry out a survey on womanhood, we can rely on you to sow the seeds of a revolution in self-belief. How liberating would that feel?"
