Letter from Tom Hiddleston to Joss Whedon Leaks, Is as Lengthy and Overly Grateful as You'd Expect

"The Avengers" is one of the highest-grossing movies of all time.
The 2012 Disney film has made more than $1.5 billion at the box office; however, the film's success was not always imminent.

When Joss Whedon initially met with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige to look over a script by "The Incredible Hulk" screenwriter Zak Penn, he said they needed to "pretend this draft never happened."

After impressing Feige with a five-page treatment for what he thought "The Avengers" should look like, Whedon proceeded to work on a new script for the film.

It took several drafts and collaboration with the cast including actor Tom Hiddleston, Marvel Studio's team, and other Marvel franchise directors to get it approved.

According to "Joss Whedon: The Biography," in stores Aug. 1, Hiddleston, who plays antihero Loki in the film, wrote Whedon a heartfelt email after reading Whedon's draft for the first time.

We've published Hiddleston's letter in full along with Whedon's response with permission from Chicago Review Press below.

Joss,

I am so excited I can hardly speak.

The first time I read it I grabbed at it like Charlie Bucket snatching for a golden ticket somewhere behind the chocolate in the wrapper of a Wonka Bar. I didn't know where to start. Like a classic actor I jumped in looking for LOKI on every page, jumping back and forth, reading words in no particular order, utterances imprinting themselves like flash-cuts of newspaper headlines in my mind: "real menace"; "field of obeisance"; "discontented, nothing is enough"; "his smile is nothing but a glimpse of his skull"; "Puny god" ...

... Thank you for writing me my Hans Gruber. But a Hans Gruber with super-magic powers. As played by James Mason ... It's high operatic villainy alongside detached throwaway tongue-in-cheek; plus the "real menace" and his closely guarded suitcase of pain. It's grand and epic and majestic and poetic and lyrical and wicked and rich and badass and might possibly be the most gloriously fun part I've ever stared down the barrel of playing. It is just so juicy.

I love how throughout you continue to put Loki on some kind of pedestal of regal magnificence and then consistently tear him down. He gets battered, punched, blasted, side-swiped, roared at, sent tumbling on his back, and every time he gets back up smiling, wickedly, never for a second losing his eloquence, style, wit, self-aggrandisement or grandeur, and you never send him up or deny him his real intelligence.... That he loves to make an entrance; that he has a taste for the grand gesture, the big speech, the spectacle. I might be biased, but I do feel as though you have written me the coolest part.

... But really I'm just sending you a transatlantic shout-out and first-bump, things that traditionally British actors probably don't do. It's epic.

Whedon wrote back with a simplistic response:

Tom, this is one of those emails you keep forever. Thanks so much. It's more articulate (and possibly longer) than the script. I couldn't be more pleased at your reaction, but I'll also tell you I'm still working on it ... Thank you again. I'm so glad you're pleased. Absurd fun to ensue.

Best, (including uncharacteristic fist bump), joss.

Can't-Man loses Patrick Wilson, two other cast members

Maybe it was a good thing they only put Paul Rudd and Michael Douglas on the recently released poster for Ant-Man.

On the same day reports surfaced saying Joaquin Phoenix was in talks to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Doctor Strange, Deadline is reporting that actors Patrick Wilson, Matt Gerard and Kevin Weisman are all out of the Marvel production, which was scheduled to begin filming in August. The online Hollywood trades cites unnamed "insiders" that say both Gerard and Weisman's characters were cut from the latest version of the script, presumably the one completed after director Edgar Wright left the production.

Wilson, however, is said to have dropped out due to a scheduling conflict after production on Ant-Man was delayed several months. Previously, Wilson said his role in Ant-Man was an "important" one so look for Marvel to re-cast it rather quickly due to the expected filming in August.

Extended Tekken 7 Trailer revealed at SDCC!

0
0

We don't know a whole lot about Tekken 7 but we do know that the game apparently manages to finish off the Mishima storyline (or so we think) as a key character in the game's long-running story about the battling bloodline in a very corrupt family tree.

The news comes courtesy of Gameguide, where they relay a lot of details from the game's producer Katsuhiro Harada. He originally announced the game back during the Evo 2014 weekend, where the first details about the game became public and we all learned that Tekken 7 would be designed on Epic Games' Unreal Engine 4.

The game engine would power the fighting game for today's high-end consoles and... we also just learned that it will also power the game for PC. That's right, the Unreal Engine 4 has enabled Bandai Namco to leverage the pipeline technology to conveniently – for the very first time in the history of the Tekken franchise – develop the game for personal computer users.

So for the first time ever we will finally see what Tekken will look and run like on PC. This should make for a very, very interesting online fighting scene, and should really help leverage the PC as a prime-time platform within the FGC communities. This comes at an amazing time given that Valve is working hard to utilize portable, console-style form-factors for PC when they launch their Steam Machines along with the SteamOS. This could effectively make desktop PCs a prime outlet for tournament play – assuming the Steam Machines arrive in time.

In addition to finding out that Tekken 7 is coming to computer (mostly likely on Steam, given that Bandai Namco has taken quite a liking to the platform) we also learn a little bit more about the game's story.

Apparently we'll find out – for the first time in the series' long-winded story – what happened with Kazuya's mother. In the teaser trailer we saw a woman kneeling down. Many believed that she had ties to Kazuya and Heihaichi, and Harada let slip that it is indeed Kazumi, Kazuya's mother. Apparently a lot of the pent up rage between Kazuya and his father stems from Heihachi killing Kazumi due to her passing the devil gene onto Kazuya, and from Kazuya and Jun Kazama, to Jin Kazama.

The teaser promises Kazuya vowing revenge for Heihachi's acts against Kazumi. However, the plot supposedly thickens: In the opening sequence of Tekken 3 we saw Ogre standing with a decapitated head. It was always believed that the head belonged to Jun, Jin's mother. There was a 19 year gap between Tekken 2 andTekken 3, in which many of the fighters from Tekken 2 had supposedly died at the hands of Ogre, one of which was supposed to be Jun.

According to Harada, the head in Ogre's hands does not belong to Jun. She will supposedly make a return to form in Tekken 7, which should be a very interesting turn of events, no doubt.

Sadly, no release date has been set in stone for the game, but we'll keep you posted on any additional news.

ESPN's Stephen A. Smith: Do Not Provoke a Man Into Beating You

ESPN's Stephen A. Smith found himself in hot water on Friday after what he said on "First Take" offended viewers -- including his own colleague, Michelle Beadle.

In the video above, you'll see Smith's rant after Ravens running back Ray Rice was suspended for two games (he knocked out his fiance in an elevator and was caught on surveillance attempting to drag her out of it). Here's what got Beadle and others angry after he said "we know you have no business putting your hands on a woman:" (Here's the full transcript)

"What I've tried to employ the female members of my family, some of who you all met and talked to and what have you, is that again, and this what...I've done this all my life, let’s make sure we don’t do anything to provoke wrong actions. Because if I come, or somebody else come, whether it’s law enforcement officials, your brother or the fellas that you know, if we come after somebody has put their hands on you, it doesn't negate the fact that they already put their hands on you. So let’s try to make sure that we can do our part in making sure that that doesn't happen.”

Stephen A. Smith responded on his twitter. If you're interested you can read what he has to say at the source.

FORMER WWE CHAMP DANIEL BRYAN SUBDUES BURGLAR With Submission Hold!!

0725-daniel-bryan-tmz-4
Former WWE Champion Daniel Bryan is a bona fide bad ass ... chasing down a burglar on foot, then locking him in a submission hold until cops arrived.

Daniel and his wife Brie Bella had just come home Thursday night when they saw 2 men on their way out of their house. The burglars dropped the stuff they were stealing and hightailed it down the street.
D.B. gave chase ... the bad guys had a big head start but the champ caught up with one of them and locked him in a rear naked choke for 5 minutes until cops arrived.

Daniel's feat is all the more impressive because the guy he caught is facing kidnapping charges in another case.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch ... Daniel's wife Brie retrieved the loot the guys were in the process of stealing, including a bracelet that belonged to the wrestler's recently deceased dad.

The second guy is still on the loose, but there's one less bad guy on the streets, thanks to D.B.

YES! YES! YES!
UPDATE: Daniel Bryan will soon be holding a press conference with the Phoenix P.D. ... and we'll be livestreaming the whole thing. press conference0725-cesar-oswald-mug-shot-2

ONTD Ex-Boyfriend Shia Labeouf Was In Court Yesterday

0
0

A forlorn Shia LaBeouf headed to court in New York today to face multiple charges for his bizarre outburst during a Broadway performance last month.
The actor, who wore a sharp suit as he appeared at Manhattan Criminal Court, is trying to work out an agreement with prosecutors to resolve the case, his attorney told the judge on Thursday.
LaBeouf, 28, has been charged with harassment, disorderly conduct and criminal trespassing for allegedly yelling abuse and slapping actors' behinds during a performance of 'Cabaret' on June 26.
On Thursday, the actor and his lawyer, G. Robert Gage, declined to comment as they left court amid a swarm of cameras and microphones. Shortly afterwards, he was pictured leaving his hotel wearing his usual scruffy uniform of a t-shirt, jeans and combat boots as he headed to the airport.

The Lone Non-Oscar Nominee: A History of Rude Trailer Billing

0
0

The throwback-y trailer for The Judge is quite deserving of both love and mockery, given that it has all the hallmarks of a '90s Oscar-bait drama, down to the billing, and I'm sure Vincent D'Onofrio is still smarting about it. In case you don't know what I'm talking about, here's how the actors are billed on-screen: Academy Award Nominee Robert Downey Jr., Academy Award Winner Robert Duvall, Academy Award Nominee Vera Farmiga, Vincent D'Onofrio who's clearly never done anything good with his life, and Academy Award Winner Billy Bob Thornton.

Okay, maybe I'm exaggerating a little bit. But poor D'Onofrio, a fine actor in his own regard, sticks out like a sore thumb in that cast list since he's never netted an Oscar nod. This is a hilariously common trend in movie trailers: someone makes the decision to credit the cast with their trophy wins or nominations, realizes there's one or two actors who lack that credit, but barrels on through anyway. It's an easy YouTube rabbit hole to fall down: which movies, in an effort to puff themselves up to audiences about their massive prestige, ended up being horribly rude to one actor?

Prisoners
http://youtu.be/sfRckdHq--c

Look, when you've got a cast this deep on your hands, you want to show them off. But this is a thriller being released in September. Do we really need to dangle Oscar nominations in front of the viewers? Because yes, Hugh Jackman, Jake Gyllenhaal, Viola Davis, and Terrence Howard are all nominees, and Melissa Leo is a winner. But Maria Bello has to be placated with "Golden Globe nominee" (ouch) and Paul Dano gets nada.

Doubt
http://youtu.be/ie4LuDp6HUs

Now come on. Meryl Streep and Philip Seymour Hoffman both get credited for their acting trophies, with specific citations below (Meryl's win for Kramer vs. Kramer is ignored, perhaps because it was in the piffling supporting category). Amy Adams, who is at this point already an Oscar nominee (for Junebug, and she'd score her second for Doubt) gets nada. RUDE.

Kinsey
http://youtu.be/XjrDEv-sf7A

This is similar to the no credit for Amy Adams situation, but it's even worse. Liam Neeson and Laura Linney get their own billing, complete with "Academy Award Nominee." Then, Timothy Hutton, who has WON an Oscar (for Ordinary People), something those two hacks Liam and Laura still haven't pulled off to this day, gets lumped in some weird three-actors-in-one-shot credit (with Peter Sarsgaard and Chris O'Donnell) that doesn't even give him his due. Hutton. Don't let them shove you around like this.

Little Children
http://youtu.be/IiJLJd7cH1c

First: this is a wonderfully atmospheric and tense trailer for a film that didn't quite deliver on all that promise. Second: Academy Award Nominee Kate Winslet (she hadn't won yet), Academy Award Winner Jennifer Connelly ... and Patrick Wilson. Patrick sees what you're doing there. He takes no solace in your "and."

Reach Me
http://youtu.be/0Tiwk8MMk18

Without a doubt, the strangest situation of them all. I barely understand what this yet-to-be-released movie even is. It has an Expendables 3-level random-ass cast list (Nelly! Tom Berenger!), including a couple of crossovers (Sylvester Stallone! Kelsey Grammer!). Anyone who has an Oscar nomination gets their due. Except for Danny Aiello, who was nominated in 1989 for Do the Right Thing. He's credited as an "Academy Award Winner." Danny, you might want to check with Denzel Washington, because I'm pretty sure he got the trophy that year for Glory. Just sayin'.

Hayley Atwell Talks 'Agent Carter' + 'Winter Soldier' Directors Confirmed For Upcoming Episodes

0
0

+ Some more highlights from the panel:

How do Markus and McFeely feel about seeing Peggy Carter living on in a TV show? Markus jokes that "We keep trying to kill her, and she won't die." They were sad they could only bring a very old version of Peggy back for "Winter Soldier," so they're excited to be able to go back and mine her earlier career. McFeely notes that in the full "Agent Carter" pilot, she will have equaled her previous screen time in the Marvel universe.

D'Esposito recalls Atwell coming in for casting on "Captain America," and being unable to stop smiling during the audition until she knew she had the part. Atwell, meanwhile, had to be locked in a room in order to read the pilot script. "The exciting thing with Peggy is I don't think we've even touched the size of the adventures she's going to have," she says. "There's still so much that's unexplored."

We see some footage, but it's a mix of historical footage, clips from "Captain America" and the Peggy Carter one-shot, plus fake newspaper headlines suggesting Howard Stark will be investigated for treason.

Farrah Abraham's Christian Movie is Actually Slasher Film Axeman 2: Overkill

0
0

Your prayers have finally been answered, Teen Mom fans. Farrah Abraham and her world-famous backdoor are coming to a big screen near you! Or possibly some shady streaming site near you, either way.

This living legend has been teasing her upcoming movie role for a while now, and we're thrilled to inform you that she's booked a part in a slasher flick called Axeman 2: Overkill. The plot? "It's an 80's style horror flick with lots of humor, gory kills and fun dialog," Farrah says to Search My Trash.

"The character Fannie Rae Baker who I play is seemingly well-intended conservative evangelical do-gooder hiking through a place called Cutler’s Creek for a couple’s Christian camp where the film takes place."

So, yeah, this is basically going to be the most amazing movie of our generation, and lord knows how many Academy Awards Farrah will win.

Farrah's already getting into the nitty gritty of Fanny's character, and says she "will draw upon the overbearing beat the bible over your head mentality that others mention or think of when thinking ‘Uber Bible Thumper.'"

Farrah explains that she was drawn to the role because of its Christian values, and she's been getting ready by practicing lines in front of the mirror.

"I continue to develop my acting abilities so that now I am ready to play characters that challenge my emotions," Farrah muses. She adds that she's inspired by the likes of Jim Carrey and, and inexplicably hates popular flicks like The Hangover and Nebraska. The more you know!

Is anyone else pumped to see Farrah bring Fannie Rae Baker to life in Axeman 2: Overkill? In the words of Jesse Spano, we're so excited, we're so excited, we're so...scared.

'Guardians of the Galaxy': Michael Rooker's Yondu inspired by 'Walking Dead'

0
0

Michael Rooker undergoes an excellent physical transformation to play Yondu in "Guardians of the Galaxy," but fans of "The Walking Dead" will see a familiar character behind the blue skin and the metal mohawk. According to Rooker, director James Gunn wanted Yondu to have a dash of Merle Dixon mixed in.

"Gunn wrote the role with me [in mind]," Rooker tells Zap2it. Apparently Gunn pitched the character as a "combination of Michael Rooker, Yondu and Merle, all mixed together," and Rooker was intrigued.

"You know how Merle is. I could call you some name or do something really dumb and stupid and mean, but you still kind of like me," Rooker says. "Yondu's the same way. I think people are going to get that. They're going to like the character, but he's not the friendliest guy."

Rooker and Gunn have been friends for nearly a decade, and the former "Walking Dead" star says Gunn was a fan of his even before he cast Rooker in his 2006 horror movie "Slither." "We've been buddies ever since," Rooker says.

Though Yondu is one of the original Guardians of the Galaxy in the comics, he plays a different role in the film. Yondu is a mentor of sorts for Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), and Rooker describes his character as "a very tough-love kind of guy." Though none of the other original Guardians show up in "Guardians of the Galaxy," Rooker hasn't found that to be a cause for concern for fans.

"Most of the tweets are wondering if Yondu's going to have his mohawk -- the fin -- and if he's going to have the bow and arrow," Rooker says. Gunn gave his own spin on Yondu's weapon, and it's been distilled into one very cool arrow. "It's a great weapon," Rooker gushes.

With Rooker's background in television, Yondu would be the perfect "Guardians" character to crossover into the "Marvel's Agents of SHIELD" TV series. Rooker says he would "do almost anything" for Marvel, and it's just a matter of finding time in his schedule to make another Yondu appearance. "I would not be opposed to that," he says.
