Kurt Russell says he's filming Quentin Tarantino's 'The Hateful Eight' next year

death-proof

2014 will go down in history as the year Quentin Tarantino almost made The Hateful Eight.

The filmmaker was bullish about filming another western after his Oscar winning hit Django Unchained—but after a script leak and an ensuing lawsuit against Gawker, Tarantino seemed to cool on the idea. But at a live read of The Hateful Eight script, he announced that he was in the process of redrafting the screenplay–presumably adding in a character named Dick “The Gawker” Denton, who suffers various horrific-but-hilarious limb-removal procedures.

Now it looks like 2015 will go down in history as the year Quentin Tarantino actually made The Hateful Eight. That’s according to Kurt Russell, who took part in The Hateful Eight live read, and who mentioned the movie among his future projects during an interview with Philadelphia’s Fox 29 station.

Russell was on hand to talk about The Battered Bastards of Baseball, Netflix’s new documentary about the Portland Mavericks, an infamously wild baseball team owned by Russell’s father Bing. But when asked about what else he was working on, Russell idly said, “There’s a Tarantino project called Hateful Eight that looks like it may go somewhere around the beginning of the year.”

Tarantino’s usual patrons The Weinstein Company didn’t immediately respond to EW’s request for comment, and given that Tarantino prefers to work at his own pace, it’s possible that “beginning of the year” start date could get delayed. Still, good to hear that there’s life in the project.

In case you haven't read the script. Here tis--

Canada's Copyright Board Passes Ruling On Music Streaming

Stand Against Tariff 8

On May 16, the Copyright Board of Canada released a long-awaited decision on royalty rates for streaming services. This decision, called Re:Sound Tariff 8 – Non-Interactive & Semi-Interactive Webcasts, 2009-2012, set the rate for commercial webcasters at 10.2 cents per 1,000 plays, while the CBC tariff is set at 13.1 cents per 1,000 plays– a massive setback for the Canadian music community, and for the artists and music companies that invest in their careers.

To put these rates into perspective:

  • An artist would need 12,647 plays to be able to pay for a download of their own song.

  • More than 16,000 plays would be needed to purchase a medium Tim Hortons coffee.

  • More than 4 million plays would be needed to fill up a tour bus with a tank of gas!

In light of this, the music industry has banded together to show its opposition to Tariff 8. CIMA, Music Canada, ADISQ and CCMIA released a joint statement in support of Re:Sound’s application for judicial review of the Tariff 8 decision. To date, over 70 record companies from across the country have signed onto the joint statement. The list of supporting companies is growing by the hour – and we’ve joined the fight!

Edge of Tomorrow Scriptwriter Dante Harper Now Working on Live-Action Akira

The Deadline website reported on Tuesday that screenwriter Dante Harper is currently working with Warner Bros., Appian Way, Mad Chance, and director Jaume Collet-Serra on the live-action Akira project.

Harper recently wrote the screenplay for the live-action Edge of Tomorrow film, which is based on the novel All You Need Is Kill by Hiroshi Sakurazaka. The film stars Tom Cruise, Emily Blunt, Charlotte Riley, Kick Gurry, Bill Paxton, Kidus Henok, Tony Way, and Marianne Jean-Baptiste.

Variety reported last August that director Collet-Serra was possibly rejoining the project, stating that, if he returned, he would direct the project in Spring 2014. Collet-Serra mentioned in interviews in February that he hoped the film would be his next project. Warner stalled the project in 2012 to revise the script so it would be less costly. Akira manga creator and anime director Katsuhiro Otomo was reportedly going to oversee the project as executive producer.

Game of Thrones' Kristian Nairn announces Rave of Thrones tour

$

Northern Irish actor Kristian Nairn has announced a Game of Thrones-themed DJ tour. The man who plays Hodor will be spinning "the deepest house [music] from all seven kingdoms", at a string of club nights throughout Australia.

"For one night only, in every capital across this land, venues will be transformed into the finest halls of Westeros," announced organisers of the so-called Rave of Thrones. Guests have been asked to wear fantasy-themed fancy dress, with those who ignore the dictum risking the wrath of "the Hand of the king".

Nairn, whose bi-syllabic character has become a fan favourite on Game of Thrones, has long been a fixture of Belfast's house music scene. For 11 years, he was a resident DJ at the city's Kremlin club, and that work helped him attract his first movie agent. "[Acting and DJing] is a similar process for me, but with slightly different components," he told Red Dot Diva in 2012. "When DJing, I am definitely trying to keep my mind very much switched on, and for Hodor, it's really the opposite. But [I still want] to be present in the scene, and to react well to what is happening, because I believe Hodor is a great reactor. I don't think too much is planned in his head!"

For his August gigs in Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, Melbourne, Darwin and Adelaide, Nairn is expected to eschew EDM trends in favour of "chunky, deep, dark" house music. The Australian artist Ego will project visuals to accompany each set, and promoters have promised "a range of surprise guests and garnishings".

Since the premiere of HBO's George R R Martin-inspired TV series in 2011, Game of Thrones has attracted a slew of musical collaborations. Members of Coldplay, the National, Sigur Rós and Snow Patrol have appeared as guest stars, and the Hold Steady contributed a drinking song for the closing credits. Earlier this year, the show's producers released a Thrones-related hip-hop mixtape. With plans for its fifth series now underway, both Lily Allen and Stevie Nicks have expressed interest in writing material for Game of Thrones' soundtrack.

A Very Pregnant Scarlett Johansson Strolls Around NYC + New Clips From Upcoming Film 'Lucy'

$

0

She has yet to confirm the news herself, but there was no denying that Scarlett Johansson is expecting after she was spotted running errands. The 29-year-old was spotted out and about in New York City yesterday and was sporting, what appeared to be, a very obvious baby bump.

As she emerged from her apartment on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, Scarlett was displaying a rather round tummy underneath her red and black patterned smock top. The 'Hitchcock' star was dressed for comfort and teamed the tie-dye top with black leggings and a pair of leopard print clogs. She accessorised her look with a pair of dark sunglasses and a black leather handbag as she tried to go unnoticed whilst running some errands.

In case she felt the cold in the Big Apple, Scarlett draped a beige jacket across her shoulders and was without her fiancé Romain Dauriac as she headed out.

The happy couple - who have been dating since November 2012 - are no doubt busy preparing for the arrival of their first child. Although neither of them have announced the happy news, in May of this year, Pete Yorn, who Scarlett collaborated with on 'Break Up' stated that she is "very pregnant". It's unsure just how Scarlett will be able to avoid questions about her impending birth as she promotes her new movie 'Lucy' which hits UK cinemas on August 22.

There’s something about a case, drugs and Paris in the following three clips from Lucy. Oh and the featurette is pretty cool too. As always, steer clear if you want to go in fresh, otherwise enjoy. They insist she opens the case, I mean it can’t have anything dangerous in it, right? The dozen armed guards with shields are there just admire Ms. Scarlett Johansson, nothing else.

Scarlett Johansson changes her hair’s color in an instant, with a dozen eyes on her and absolutely no one freaks out? I guess out there in Taiwan they have seen everything.

At this point I can safely say that if there’s one thing Luc Besson doesn’t lack, it’s imagination. Also, if Scarlett Johansson says she’s going to drive, then you better let her do that and get out of the way. A lot of cars flying in this one.

And here’s a featurette going behind the scenes of Lucy.

You know, this might not end up being a very good movie at the end of the day, but man do I want to see it. There’s just something about Scarlett Johansson going all Neo, and having Luc Besson direct (and write) pretty much guarantees a good time.

Starring Scarlett Johansson and Morgan Freeman, Luc Besson's Lucy is gearing up for its July 25 release with solid buzz out front. Universal is currently full throttle in a confident, to-the-point marketing campaign with the film's promos showcasing a high concept story and Johansson's physical prowess.

Besson, writer/producer of the Taken films, is no stranger to the action genre. As a major part of Liam Neeson's most iconic role in recent years, he helped give the star a whole new platform to master. Besson's more hands-on approach with Lucy (which he writes and directs) could have a similar effect for Johansson--already a growing staple of action flicks thanks to her turns as Black Widow in three Marvel films to date, including what is so far 2014's top domestic earner (Captain America: The Winter Soldier). Between it and The Avengers, her box office street cred has improved significantly among both men and women. Media coverage of Johansson's pregnancy with fiancé Romain Dauriac rounds out the brewing perfect storm for Lucy's awareness.

As an original movie, Lucy could expand upon that drawing power even more. This summer's been filled to the brim with pictures that have underperformed or, at least, failed to genuinely impress at the domestic box office.
2014 isn't the first year that's happened, but historically it's a precursor to fresh concepts and/or non-sequels inspiring higher-than-typical demand from moviegoers.

Other than simply moving away from a competitive month of August, that observation may have been on Universal's and EuropaCorp's minds when pushing up Lucy's North American release from August 8 to July 25 two months ago. Realizing the need for a prominent female-led summer release was another likely factor. Internationally, Lucy will still open in staggered fashion throughout August and September (including a special, overseas-only IMAX release on August 8).

Social Media Builds a Case

Lucy's Facebook page added an incredible 426,000 new fans between June 14 and July 14, and has gained a stellar 64,000 today (July 15) alone. In all, the film boasted over 730,000 "likes" at the time of this story's publishing. For a movie with no built-in audience, those are very impressive signs. In contrast, Transcendence added 19,000 fans during the comparable period (for a total of 132,000). Flixster anticipation and Twitter activity further support the odds of Lucy cementing sleeper hit status.

July 25 will also see the release of Brett Ratner's Hercules, starring Dwayne Johnson. The audience overlap between it and Lucy could hold each movie back somewhat, but despite Johnson's proven star power in recent years, Lucy is quietly becoming a strong contender to steal more of that film's potential viewers. Hercules hasn't been a slouch on the social media front either, and we'll continue to follow each respective pic's trends as the competition for next week's box office heats up. If word of mouth for Johansson's actioner takes off, don't be surprised by a run toward $100 million stateside.

So, if 'Lucy' does well, we can expect an imminent announcement on a Black Widow solo movie, y/y?

Stan Lee Has ‘Avengers 2′ Cameo, Jokes About ‘Batman v Superman’ Appearance

$

Avengers: Age of Ultron has a pretty big cast already, but of course there’s always room for a certain giant. Stan Lee has confirmed that he will have a cameo in the film, as he has in all other Marvel Cinematic Universe movies to date.

However, Lee has also teased that he’s ready to break from tradition a bit. The Marvel legend jokingly suggested that DC should give him a role in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Hit the jump to find out why he thinks it’d be a good idea.

Appearing at the London Film and Comic Con this weekend, Lee revealed that he’s already wrapped a small role for Avengers: Age of Ultron. While he wouldn’t give away any specifics about his part, he did hint that Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Captain America (Chris Evans) would be involved.

The movies have been great. We have been so lucky. We’ve got the best directors, the best special effects people and wonderful actors. People that had not been big stars before like the fellow who plays Thor — he’s wonderful! I was with him yesterday — I did my cameo of course [for Avengers: Age of Ultron]. And Chris who plays Captain America… He’s excellent.

Avengers: Age of Ultron will mark Lee’s eleventh appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He’s also cropped up in tons of other Marvel-based movies, most of which have turned out to be huge hits. At the event, Lee commented on Marvel’s big-screen success.

All it can do is make it better for Marvel if we do these movies and the movies are successful. There are people reading Marvel comic books that would have never thought to read a comic book before. It helps the comic book business. The movie business has been unbelievably incredible. The Marvel movies are about the biggest money-making movies of all.

In fact, he teased, “DC could probably make a lot more money with Superman and Batman if they announced that I’d have a cameo in it! People wouldn’t believe it — they’d have to go to the theater to see it!”

Whether Warner Bros./DC will buy that reasoning remains to be seen. But wouldn’t it make for a fun little Easter Egg if they did?

Avengers: Age of Ultron lands in theaters May 1, 2015. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice arrives May 6, 2016.

Favorite cameo? Mine is the Winter Soldier.

Kreayshawn Got Catfished By A Fake Diplo

Last night, Kreayshawn announced that she got catfished by a fake Diplo. She took to her depressingly under-furnished office decorated with Dragon Ball Z and Bakugan posters to record a vlog about her experience:

The backstory: Life goes on for Kreayshawn after the flop of her album and gives birth to her son Dominic. She starts living that straight mommy life, giving up lean, and staying in at night. A few nights ago, she goes back into an old GMail account and starts reliving the wild times. Oh look, there's Diplo's dick pic that he sent. She decides she'll hit him up on Twitter DM to remind him of his sexual transgression as a playful goof:

About an hour later she tweets:

Diplo informs Kreayshawn that his dick pic would have a visible tattoo (probably something really cool like a knife or a treble clef). Turns out that the Diplo that she had a meaningful email correspondence was a complete fake.

The impostor started to contact her after her fan videos were chosen to be hosted on the website of Diplo's record label, Mad Decent. Being recognized by the website was already a self-esteem boost for young Kreay, but the personal emails from the accomplished producer were instrumental in her pursuing her dreams. While the fake Diplo would problematically request a "personal sex tape" that she would deny, he would also give her compliments and words of encouragement that she cites as "inspiring her whole career... like, kinda."

Kreay in 2011, telling the real Diplo that she misses his email correspondence to which he does not reply.

Before going to Diplo's shows, she would email the fake Diplo and he expertly diverted any confusion with the brilliant line "don't be surprised if I act brand new because I'm going to be there with my girlfriend." Looking back, Kreay takes it all in stride and seems to have a pretty good sense of humor about it. Although there is a dark moment at the end of the confessional vlog where she begins to ruminate on who the troll might be. "Honestly, I think it was a crazy ex-boyfriend because..." she looks to her laptop screen, breaking eye contact with the camera lens and nervously fixes her bangs. She's deep in thought of the worst in a previous relationship and continues despondently, "What kind of girl... doesn't have one of those?"

Every single original series on ABC Family is going to feature holiday-themed episodes later this year.

That's right, get ready to carve pumpkins and scream with laughter during all-new Halloween-themed episodes of comedies "Melissa & Joey" and "Baby Daddy," plus the premiere of new hidden-camera prank show "Freak Out" during the network's annual "13 Nights of Halloween."

Then break out the candy canes and hang the stockings this winter as "Pretty Little Liars,""The Fosters,""Switched at Birth,""Chasing Life,""Melissa and Joey" and "Baby Daddy" air all-new holiday-themed episodes during the network's annual "25 Days of Christmas" programming event.

Why Is Jenny McCarthy Out At The View? She Says She Didn't Fit In!!!

The talk show panelist answered that question during a sit-down interview on The Howard Stern Show.

She said it was her best year ever, adding that it was rewarding and intriguing to work with Barbara Walters, who helped create the show in 1997 and who said her goodbye in May.

"I'm the luckiest person," the 41-year-old said. "I'm her last hire." And that's pretty much where niceties came to end.

The self-proclaimed dirty bird said she had a "four-hour legal meeting" and would have to censor herself too much. She said she hated it when actors tried to talk politics.

Was McCarthy fired? Stern asked. "Yes and no. I would call it: If I wanted to stay with Rosie and if I was a Republican I would still be there right now."

The former Playboy model admitted she played it too safe during her stint at the table.

"I'll tell you something, Howard, it's like halfway into it, around February, I went, 'God, I'm not allowed to be the best of me here.' I feel like to have a voice, to be able to speak without having to interrupt people, it's very difficult, and I don't like doing it. It's very uncomfortable, so I felt like, 'You know what? Maybe this is just a stepping stone for me to go somewhere where I can be my full self.'"

Indeed, the onetime Singled Out co-host is getting her own radio show on SiriusXM called Dirty, Sexy, Funny With Jenny McCarthy, which will premiere Wednesday.

New Walking Dead Promo Pic: Fifty Shades of Daryl

“If Daryl dies, we riot” has been a familiar refrain from fans of the crossbow-wielding Daryl Dixon. That means Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman could have a melee on his hands if he does indeed off Daryl as he promised on Entertainment Weekly Radio (although we’re pretty sure he was kidding). Regardless, Dixon devotees are likely to gasp at this exclusive new image from season 5 of the zombie drama, which returns in October on AMC.

In it, we see a bloodied and bruised Daryl, who has also been gagged and bound…and not in a sexy way as legions of ladies no doubt dream about on a daily basis. (Or maybe this is considered sexy. I have no idea. People are into some freaky stuff.)

Who is responsible for this heinous act of heiniosity?!? Are those bastards at Terminus behind roughing up our main man (as played by Norman Reedus)? And how will Daryl get out of such a predicament? Wait, he does get out of the predicament… right? Right?!?

Anna Kendrick thinks it would be extremely taxing to have the pressure of constantly making “Most Beautiful” lists, and she’s opening up about being known more for her acting abilities than for her looks.

The Pitch Perfect 2 star, who’s had a booming career since first appearing in The Twilight Saga, acknowledges it’s not her looks that’s fueled her successful career – although to her credit, it could’ve been.

"The thing is, my appearance—that's never been my moneymaker," she told the August issue of Glamour.

"I'm fine being small. I'm fine being all the things I am and I'm happy I'm not supposed to be on the 50 Most Beautiful list all the time, because that would be super f--king stressful,” she went on to say.

Last month, it was revealed Kendrick told Elle she hasn’t been hit on in five years. She said the last time she was hit on was in 2009, when Up in the Air came out.

In an interesting discovery today, it was learned that Lady Gaga’s album track ‘Mary Jane Holland’, produced by the talented Madeon, was originally intended for the artist The Good Natured.
The song was previously titled ‘Cant Beat The Machines’ and features mostly the same production work by Madeon. Released in June of 2012, The Good Natured track has been completely pulled off of the internet, after Gaga purchased the rights to turn it into the song – ‘Mary Jane Holland‘. Operation Gaga was able to obtain the lost demo through a few hours of Google searching (original source here), and are happy to share it today! Listen to the full song below:

Bey kept up her tradition of not showing her daughter's face in any of the photos, choosing to only reveal pictures of her back.

Kyary Pamyu Pamyu featured in .... VOGUE??

$

0

Kyary Pamyu Pamyu (née Caroline Charonplop Kyarypamyupamyu) is one of the world’s biggest game-changing pop phenomena, but if you live in the States, you might not have ever even heard of her. Though she’s a one-woman cottage industry in her native Japan, releasing three number-one albums, garnering huge social media followings, and endorsing major products, it’s been extremely difficult for Asian artists like her to cross over and climb the American charts, Psy’s “Gangnam Style” smash aside.

If anyone can do it, though, it might be this Lady Gaga of Japan. Kyary has an off-kilter pop appeal that feels perfectly suited for a Katy Perry radio world, and she’s distinguished herself with hyper-creative videos like “PONPONPON” (over 67 million views!), which shows her dressing up in an escalating series of insane outfits that are Internet-age perfection. Her new album, Pika Pika Fantajin, out in the U.S. on July 29, is being produced by longtime collaborator and J-pop mastermind Yasutaka Nakata, and features her first-ever all-English song, “Ring a Bell,” now streaming exclusively on Vogue.com. Take a listen here. If the stars align, you might just be hearing this voice all over American radio in a matter of weeks.

Vogue didn't explain the song, which may turn people off. Kyary explained the simplicity of it:

It was my first try at singing a song completely in English.  It’s kind of like a children’s song in English.  Like when you’re going to a music studio! Happy! The lyrics are very simple.  The choreography is simple so I want to get heated up with everyone during a live performance!

She's not kidding. I think Barney had more complex lyrics than this song. But she is learning English.

----

"Pikapika Fantajin" debuted at #1 on the Oricon chart with 48k sold, and her second album to debut at #1. Mind you, Japan has 1/3 our population, so proportionally, that's like an American selling 144,000, which doesn't happen often.

"I’m so happy that my third album was also able to take the #1 spot on the Oricon rankings! It’s a moment I get to experience again thanks to all the fans who support me and all of my staff members. As Kyary Pamyu Pamyu, I hope to keep evolving, keep surprising and delighting everyone, and convey all these emotions to you!"

The album comes out on iTunes on July 29. It's on Barnes & Noble for preorder for August 12 delivery, which kind of explains why retail outlets cratered in a digital world, doesn't it?

Gossip Girl's Chace Crawford Splits from Model Girlfriend

Chace Crawford has revealed he has split with his latest girlfriend Canadian model Rachelle Goulding.

The former Gossip Girl star told Kiis FM breakfast show hosts Kyle Sandilands and Jackie O the couple were no longer together on Wednesday. Chace, who was being interviewed by the pair was asked by the shock jock:'Are you still dating that Canadian model, the hot chick?'
The 29-year-old responded: 'Ah, no, I'm not, I'm not.'

Kyle, digging deeper on the topic of the actor's personal life said: 'Ahh, pardon me for bringing up...what happened there?'Taking it in his stride Chace explained the couple's split was amicable: 'It's totally good, it's totally good. We had fun.' The actor was last pictured together with Rachelle, 26, back in March last year, when they were seen taking in a Knicks vs Bobcats game at Madison Square Garden in New York City. But it was never confirmed they had parted company.

The model was born in Vancouver, Canada, before moving to New Zealand and then Australia as a child. (LOL, WHO ASKED???) When she was 10 years old her family then relocated back to Vancouver. Her exotic looks are courtesy of her mixed Filipino, Spanish, English and Irish heritage, and they have helped to get her some high profile campaigns. (WHAT? WHY?) Rachelle has strutted her stuff and posed up a storm for the likes of Elizabeth Arden, Nivea, Olay and Vidal Sassoon. She was also named the Sports Illustrated Lovely Lady of the Day (OF THE DAY?!) by the magazine, thanks to her TV spot for Axe body spray. (SMDH @ THIS RESUME)

In the commercial she showed off her sporting prowess and showcased shot-put and pole-vaulting skills while keeping her eyes on a man spraying his bare chest.
However it seems her fantastic physique and showstopping looks weren't enough to keep Chace interested - although he revealed the main reason the pair went their separate ways was
because he has moved to Los Angeles to pursue his acting career.

He said: 'I actually moved out of New York, I live in LA now.' Kyle pushing on whether he was on the market asked: 'Have you got a new one (girlfriend), have you got a new bit of romance?' Chace, who filmed his last scenes for Gossip Girl in October 2012 said furthering his career was currently coming first. 'You know what I am traveling too much right now. I am just trying to move in (to Los Angeles) right now, I have a couple of independent films, right now.'

He said the dating scene wasn't the same as New York: 'You know what LA is different. It's defintiely a different town from New York, especially for meeting people.' This drew a smile from Jackie which caused Kyle to say: 'What that really means, because girls hear things one way and men hear things a different way, is...so you heard that (Jackie) as: "He's single and he's devoted to his work. 'And the way I heard that is: "No no I'm chopping everything, I'm single. I'm just going through, I've just moved to a new town and I'm just exploring all options."' Chace took the comments in his stride and laughed while Jackie added he probably wouldn't have too much trouble finding himself some interested ladies: 'Well it's LA He wouldn't have any problems getting girls no question.'

Since leaving Gossip Girl the actor has starred in the film What To Expect When You Are Expecting, and most recently had a guest spot in Glee starring as Dianna Agron's character Quinn's boyfriend. He has four movies currently in post production - Undrafted, Eloise, Mountain Men and an as yet untitled Warren Beatty project.

Can we please give it up for the P.R. summer intern who put this piece together?

After The Hills alum skipped Kardashian's nuptials to Kanye West, rumors swirled that the siblings may be squabbling but Jenner says that simply isn't true.

"Not going to Kim's wedding was not me trying to diss her and Kanye," Jenner told PEOPLE at Monday night's 9th Annual All-Star Celebrity Kick-Off Party, where he later spun tracks as DJ.

"I simply had a very last-minute thing. They didn't want to let people know about their wedding early in advance, and I had already booked gigs in Chicago and some other places, so I was already working."

As for rumors of Kardashian not inviting Jenner's girlfriend, Kaitlyn, to festivities? Totally false. "Of course Kim would let me bring my girlfriend if I wanted to," Jenner said. "I'm her brother – it's her wedding. I am allowed to bring someone if I want to."

While Jenner may have missed out on Kim's big day, he did attend the wedding of her ex-boyfriend Reggie Bush over the weekend.

"I've been friends with Reggie for a very long time," Jenner explained. "I really love him and he's one of my favorite people on this entire planet. I got to have a really close relationship with him through him and Kim being together."

Despite his absence at Kim's European affair, Jenner cares a lot about his stepsister.

"The only opinion that matters in this situation is Kim's, and me and her are good," he says. "She is incredible."

Why 'Kim Kardashian: Hollywood' Is A $200 Million Hit App

When Glu Mobile, the San Francisco based publisher of the app, Kim Kardashian: Hollywood makes its second quarter earnings announcement in a few weeks, CEO Niccolo de Masi will probably find it hard to resist mumbling a quiet ka-ching under his breath.

Analysts forecast that the app, a breakout hit for the developer, will probably rake in $200 million in revenue by the end of this year, according to reports by Bloomberg.

With the launch of the game just three weeks ago, stock price of Glu is at the highest it’s been in 18 months – making this the biggest and most profitable year in the company’s history.

It’s particularly impressive, given that its recent success can be attributed to just one bold yet rather astute move.

Glu took one of its proven game engine concepts, a game previously called Stardom Hollywood which already had a history of retaining and monetizing users, and made the decision to re-brand it with a star name attached.

“We identified Kim Kardashian West as arguably the best brand fit in the world and we approached her,” CEO Niccolo de Masi tells me.

“Everyone quickly recognized the tremendous business opportunity.”

With Kardashian West’s brand power, the game has reached a wide audience, offering players a glimpse into her life they may not otherwise have seen – while generating revenues from in-app purchases for the company.

“The app stands currently at number five on Apple ’s Top Grossing chart so we are confident in our pricing decisions,” he says.

Further, with a staggering 40,000 five star reviews in Apple’s App store, and the only game in the top 10 to hold a five star rating, it’s fair to conclude that its users are more than a little taken away.

Payal Shah the smart, successful 24 year old entrepreneur behind L’Dezen, an international fine jewelry brand which counts Lady Gaga, Carrie Underwood and Nicki Minaj as clients, finds that the alternate reality portrayed by Kim Kardashian: Hollywood provides not just entertainment but also some welcome respite.

“It’s almost like living a parallel life. Not that I strive to be an A-List Hollywood celebrity ‎- I have clients that are, so I know what their lives are like. It’s a fun escape after a challenging day. The fancy clothes, the stunning villas and apartments, the clubbing and socializing are just a few keystrokes way. Literally while you’re lying in bed.”

Ali Hussainy, a 20 year old from Los Angeles, another super fan of the app says, “I work in Film and TV, so what I find most interesting is that Kim Kardashian has done what every production company in town is trying to accomplish: creating a second screen experience to accompany their show. I’m sure most Kim fans only put down the game to watch Keeping up with the Kardashians, and then pick it up again once the show is over. There is no disconnect.”

According to the app’s publisher, Kardashian West has been actively involved in the development process from start to finish.

“In addition to her in-game audio commentary, she provided a significant amount of creative feedback. She hand-selected the majority of the outfits, accessories, hairstyles, and other in-game items – and her deep involvement continues as we roll out updates and new content – from the aesthetics to new locations and features,” says de Masi.

The game’s concept is simple: With Kim Kardashian as their mentor, users work their way up the rungs of Hollywood to become, ultimately, an A List celebrity.

Emy Sebagh, a 20 year old from Los Angeles, ranks as the number one A-Lister in her group (at the time of publishing.)

“Being an A-list celebrity means you get more appearances, shoots and big opportunities such as being the face of a brand. This also means you get more money, which you can use to buy properties and new outfits that will help you level up, and gain more followers. I currently have over 50 million followers.”

While this may seem an unappealing, even objectionable endeavor to those who have grown wary of a culture obsessed with the fast pursuit of fame, these young players say they ‘get’ the game’s humor and – something beloved of their age-group: the irony.

Says Ali, “Kim Kardashian has taken every negative connotation that has ever been made about her and incorporated it into this game. Half the fun is waiting for the little inside jokes like ‘Dating another celebrity will make you more famous.’ And it’s actually quite funny when you come across a character you’re having a faux Twitter war with, or a D-Lister trying to bad mouth you, you think to yourself: Is Kim referring to who I think she is?”

Key to the game’s success is that everything is kept current. “Kim Kardashian’s outfits are up to date. ‘Yeezus’ is mentioned a few times – one of the t-shirts available looks like the Yeezus Tour shirt and Kim is wearing her massive engagement ring,” says Emy.

“It doesn’t look like the Kim from two years ago, or even a year ago,” adds Ali. “It is pretty much up to date with the Kim you constantly see. You think to yourself, wasn’t Kim just wearing that dress, like, a month ago?”

It’s for these reasons, they say, that the game has spread like wildfire – with almost all their friends – and Instagram followers – obsessed.

A game of this nature, and with such popularity, would attract a fair amount of criticism – not unexpectedly. Some have called it ‘vapid’ and ‘shallow’ for promoting the wrong ideals to young people.

Ali responds, “I am not insulted by those who think it promotes vapid morals - it does. But, I know that a game doesn’t define my morals.”

“When I first started playing the game,” says Emy, “I was a little surprised by how superficial it was. Working in the industry, I can’t lie and say this is not how Hollywood works. Maybe I’m lucky enough to know the truth and not let it affect my values.”

Adds Payal, “It’s just a fun way to sort of still get out there without really being out there. And, rather than defining who you are, it allows you to have a dual life, while still incorporating things that you enjoy such as the gaming aspect, social media, love and relationships and career building.”

I put the same question to de Masi.

“We’re in the business of mobile entertainment,” he replies, “and the product we’ve delivered does just that.”
