Why Sherlock Holmes Superfans Are Wrong About Elementary

$

0

Confession: my best friend is a Sherlock Holmes superfan. She has merch. She’s read all the books. She’s written a cycle of (really great) poems based on his legend. I, meanwhile, have read a few of the adventures, seen a few of the Granada episodes, and find Sherlock in all his incarnations — as Robert Downey Jr., as Benedict Cumberbatch, as Johnny Lee Miller — mightily cute. Earlier this year, I was the Watson to my friend’s Holmes at a Sherlock Holmes charity ball, where I met several other superfans. No one had very nice things to say about Elementary.

In fact, most of the people we met at the ball, though able to spout off trivia about everything from the strictly canonical stories to films new and old to the BBC series, hadn't even bothered to watch very much of CBS’s modern-day adaptation. “It’s not that it’s a bad show,” one girl told me. “It’s just not Holmes.” Any Holmesian purist could be forgiven for such a feeling: Holmes is a junkie! Watson is a girl! When I forced my friend to watch the first episode, she wasn't convinced to change her mind. She found Elementary‘s Holmes to be too broken, too embittered, too emotional on all fronts to be any Holmes she recognized.

And, he is. But perhaps that is a more faithful adaptation of Holmes’s psyche than it seems. In the other new modern adaptation, BBC’s Sherlock, Benedict Cumberbatch plays the famous detective as almost cruelly cold, playing up the hint of Asperger's that has long been identified in Arthur Conan Doyle’s characterization. But in Elementary, Holmes has suffered from his unique mind, and that, at least to this viewer, makes perfect sense.

In the season one finale, when Moriarty (this is a whole other essay, but I actually don’t hate this majorly anti-canon plot twist as much as I thought I did; at least it gives Irene some actual, serious agency, and turns the finale into a war between two genius women, with Sherlock rolling around in pain. Not canon, but good television) leans over Holmes’ hospital bed, she tells him that she understands why he’s an addict: because his mental sensitivities, the qualities that make him such a great detective, also leave him in near-constant pain. She may be the villain, but she’s right. What kind of space is there, in a modern world, for someone like Sherlock Holmes? It’s easy to see how someone whose mind is constantly spinning, constantly noticing, constantly drawing connections might feel overloaded by the world and turn to drugs, might be twitchy and tortured and desirous of quelling his many needs in untoward fashions. I think the modern Holmes of Elementary is much more realistic than the modern Holmes of Sherlock; being alive is messy and awkward and difficult, especially if you’re different from everyone else. Cumberbatch's Holmes is a fantasy — a great one, like Doyle’s. Miller’s Holmes might live down the street.

So while Elementary doesn't feel any need to stick to the canonical stories (though there are some sweet Easter Eggs for those superfans, mostly bee-related) it’s a smart police procedural with good female characters and a believable adaptation of one of the most singular characters of all time. If you love Holmes enough to go to a costume ball in his honor, you should think about giving it another chance.

Suffering from high self-esteem? Some Candice Swanepoel Rx for ya.

Keira Knightley’s ex Jamie Dornan: Being good looking has held me back as an actor

Jamie Dornan says being good looking has stopped him matching the success of his ex-lover Keira Knightley on the big screen.

The 31-year-old, who has posed up with the likes of Eva Mendes for Calvin Klein, now hopes to hit the big time by playing a murderer across from Gillian Anderson in hit TV drama The Fall.

‘Modelling doesn’t hold you back in LA at all,’ explained the hunk.

‘In LA, they don’t think that because you leant against walls and looked depressed while someone took your photograph, it means you can’t act. In the UK, there’s a massive stigma attached to it. You couldn’t possibly have had your photograph taken for a living and act.’

Now the hottie hopes to build up his self-esteem when it comes to reading out his lines.

The Northern Ireland lad told Red magazine: ‘I think my lesson is to back yourself once you’ve been given a job. Far too often, I’ve been given a job and then doubted why I’m there.

‘I’ll assume they’ve made a wrong decision. I felt a lot of pressure when I first started filming this, because there was no denying that it was a risk to cast me. I doubted myself for at least the first two days.’

Dornan was in a high profile romance with Keira which ended in 2005. The actress married 29-year-old Klaxon’s rocker James Righton.

Glee's Samuel Larsen chops off dreadlocks

Better or worse?

His long dreadlocks have formed a key part of his image. But Glee's Samuel Larsen has taken the brave step of cutting it all off.

The 21-year-old devoted Christian revealed the dramatic change in a before and after series of photos, first showing him with his long hair and then without, in West Hollywood, California.

The San Francisco-born actor wears only jeans in the photo shoot, showing off his impressive physique.

In the before picture, Samuel wears his signature dreadlocks over one shoulder as he stares intently at the camera.

He gets playful in another shot, holding the ropes of hair in the air with his hands as he smiles while looking skywards.

Samuel, who plays Christian character Joe Hart in the hit Fox show, looks like a different man in the after pictures, showing the singer with short, thick black hair.

He wears geek chic reading glasses as he seductively plays with his belt while wearing what looks like a shark's tooth around his neck.

In both the before and after series, Samuel shows off his nose ring and numerous tattoos, including the phrase, 'I will love thee O Lord My strength' from Psalm 18 in the Bible.

Samuel clearly felt freer after cutting off all his hair, tweeting:

'Just for the record my neck feels freakin awesome okay. Seriously. #holla'.

His haircut has been a long time in the making.

'I'm very much over my hair. If it was up to me, I'd have cut it a long time ago,' he told TV Line in 2011.

'I called my agent a year ago telling her I wanted to cut my hair because I thought it limited me too much. I wanted to try to get more mainstream roles, and she talked me out of it. I guess that [Glee co-creator] Ryan [Murphy] liked it and I'm okay with that, but I do look at keeping my hair as more of a burden.'

He landed the part in the series after winning the The Glee Project season one along with with Damian McGinty.

He had previously auditioned for American Idol in 2010 and made it to Hollywood Week before being cut.

Just like 'Evil Dead,' the new 'Poltergeist' is a sequel... not a remake

$

Well, at least we can’t waggle the finger at Gil Kenan for not ‘trying’ with his “Poltergeist” remake – seems, for better or worse, he’s mostly trying to do something different with his update of the 1982 classic.

The “Monster House” director seems to have gone for the ‘completely new story and characters, but same title’ approach – a’la “Evil Dead” (and it worked out OK), as story specs obtained by Bloody Disgusting suggest.

The movie, which begins filming in Toronto this September, fixes on a new family who come face-to-clown with some evil spites… (this leave open the possibility of a Craig T. Nelson cameo, then!?)

Here’s what Bloody Disgusting have :

The new version follows Eric Bowen and his family who, after he loses his job, relocate to a new town to start anew. His daughter, Madison, is abducted, making him truly understand what’s important in life: family. In the new version, Eric’s wife, Amy, can communicate with the dead.

Another interesting new character is Carrigan Burke, a television personality who hosts “Haunted House Cleaners.”” The supernatural doesn’t scare this guy. Dr. Brooke Powell is Carrigan’s ex-wife who is a parapsychologist at a local university. Her team investigates the supernatural events surrounding the disappearance of the Bowen girl.

We have a little more…

Our own Clint, who was involved in an earlier incarnation of this fourth “Poltergeist” film, gave me some extra details on the film.

Firstly, the Kenan-directed Raimi-produced reboot – much like the “Evil Dead” remake – exists in the same world as the previous “Poltergeist” films. So while it is a ‘reboot’ of the franchise, it’s also somewhat of a sequel – taking place years after the Freeling’s were ran out of town.

In one scene in the new film, the kids’ find some things behind the sliding panel in the attic. Yep, you guessed it – they find some of the Freeling’s possessions, intentionally left behind. There’s the Star Wars bed sheets (from Robbie’s room), a black-and-white TV set (why, of course!), and some Christmas decorations.

Although the new film may possess new characters and somewhat of a different storyline, all the “familiar beats” from the original “Poltergeist” films are in it. There’s the scary tree that proves a looming threat to our youngster (and gets pulled underground), the freaky ‘clown’ that sits upon a rocking chair in the bedroom (in this case, the clown sits in younger brother Griffin’s room), and of course there’s ‘phone’ trouble (in this case, older sister Kendra’s iPhone gets damaged by unseen forces), and of course the little girl – Madison – who makes friends with ‘The Lost People’ that nobody can see (but who don’t mind ‘showing off’ – making Madison’s hair stand up like she’s just been struck by electricity, being just one of their ‘tricks’).

I think this is a great way to go – you’re not cheesing off the fans of the previous films by pretending they didn’t happen but you’re also bringing in a new audience by starting afresh with new characters. But more so, there’s an opportunity later – say in a sequel – for us to possibly reunite with some of the characters from the original trilogy, like Craig T. Nelson and JoBeth Williams’ characters (or maybe they’re planning for the duo to cameo in this one?!).

I think we have to give producer Sam Raimi credit for both the “Evil Dead” and, by the sounds, the “Poltergeist” remake – he’s likely the one who insisted they both be part sequels- part reboots. I like!

Source

I really was not happy when it first broke that they were remaking this. While I still wish that they would give original ideas more of a chance, I was really happy what they ended up doing with the new Evil Dead so I'm really warming up to this. Do you know any stories about poltergeists, ONTD?

Kelly Rowland’s new album is shaping up to be a very solid effort.

Set for release on June 18th, Talk a Good Game will feature appearances by Wiz Khalifa, Pusha T, and The-Dream. Also featured on the album are Kelly’s former Destiny’s Child bandmates - Beyoncé and Michelle Williams - on a song titled, “You Changed.”

On Monday, the new X Factor judge stopped by Blis FM where she premiered the track in full. The 2000s-styled mid-tempo accompaniment puts the trio’s wondrous vocals front and center and it’s certainly a powerful record.

“I can say I’m done in a million ways/ But let’s not beat around the bush, let’s cut to the chase,” sings Rowland.

Talk a Good Game is preceded by the raunchy anthem, “Kisses Down Low” and the tell-all diary entry, “Dirty Laundry.”

Listen to Kelly Rowland, Beyoncé and Michelle’s “You Changed” below. The album is now available for pre-order on iTunes.

One Direction Star Zayn Malik's mum has joined Twitter to protect her son from internet trolls.

Tricia Malik signed up after yobs targeted the singer for his Muslim religion and Asian background.

She hit back at one user who posted abuse: “Hope you’re happy now Zayn noticed your tweet! You can’t even imagine how it made him upset, you psycho.”

Tricia, 41, from Bradford, West Yorkshire, later told her 39,000 followers that she had urged Zayn, 20, to ignore the nuts.

She added: “My son is strong enough.”

Jelena Is Back Together!!!

Selena and Justin are finally back together, but she’s still keeping him on a short leash. HollywoodLife.com has the EXCLUSIVE reason why.

Don’t start doing backflips just yet, Justin Bieber. Even though the couple is officially back together (though they are taking it slow), a source close to Selena Gomez reveals to HollywoodLife.com EXCLUSIVELY that the romantic reunion will be over in a flash if Justin goes back to his old ways.

Selena Gomez To Justin Bieber: Don’t Mess With My Emotions

Selena is back in love, but that doesn’t mean she’s stopped being practical. After everything she and Justin have gone through, she knows that she has to keep her guard up somewhat to protect herself from heartbreak.

“She has told him that if he f***s with her emotions too much, she will drop him,” the source says. Gotta love that frankness!

The source explains that Selena has so much going on with her music career and upcoming tour, that she can’t be worrying about her relationship with Justin. He needs to be there to support her, not fight her. “She needs to focus on her big tour,” the source continues. “She’s trying to be levelheaded and knows how important the shows are to her fans, so it won’t be a surprise to him.”

Selena Gomez: Careful In Love

We really admire Selena’s ability to balance romance and rationality. She’s opening herself up for this relationship — even after their past struggles — but at the same time she’s being careful.

“Justin and Selena are dating but they are taking things slow,” the same source revealed. “Selena is keeping her heart from being broken, so she is definitely looking at this as a trial period in their relationship.”

Good for her — she’s really matured and learned from her past mistakes.

'Man of Steel': Mackenzie Gray playing Jax-Ur

Mackenzie Gray has been rumoured to be playing Jax-Ur in Man of Steel.

The actor's role in Zack Snyder's Superman film, which has so far remained a mystery, has been claimed to be that of the Kryptonian scientist, reports ComicBook.com.

Gray has been rumoured to be playing Lex Luthor - whom he portrayed a clone of in Smallville - or the alien villain Brainiac.

Jax-Ur has had various portrayals in comics, usually as a rebel scientist allied to General Zod.

We got the chance to talk exclusively with the main star of the ad, Guy Nardulli. He plays the worker fixing all those potholes Man of Steel is leaving behind as he tries to save the world.

For those of us unfamiliar with how TV spots are shot, can you run us through how much rehearsing time goes into it, and from start to finish how long of a shoot it was?

TV spots are unique, each one is different from one another, some require a ton of rehearsal and well others you just show up get your lines and go to work. For this spot, we just had to work out the pacing of the walk from the truck, around and back to the back of the truck. Pretty simple, and Zack Snyder made it easy, he knew exactly what he wanted in the shot. My call time was 7am and I was done at 7pm. Shot different angles, close ups of both myself and Henry and these take time cause you have to have different set ups for each shot... ie light position, different takes from the actors, and of course in this spot the bite.

What was it like to work with Henry? is there any funny, quirky, unique story you can share from that day on set?

Henry was amazing, very approachable, open, a true professional on set. We chatted about our careers and what we have next on our plates. I will say that Henry makes a great Superman, every quality you can ask for he has.

The TV spot was directed by the one and only Zack Snyder. Can you tell us how that experience was like?

Working for Zack was a great experience, I mean this guy has done 300, Watchmen, and now Superman to name a few. Very easy to work for, he had a vision of what he wanted, presented it as simply as he could and we got this spot. I was honored to be a part of this. In some way I'll be connected to the Superman franchise now thanks to Zack and the people at the Carl's Jr/Hardee's (72 and sunny) advertising agency. I will say this, the first time Zack yelled cut it sounded as if he was groaning in disapproval almost like he was saying ugh!!!!! it freaked me out cause I thought I did something wrong but didn't, it's just his way of yelling cut.

We loved the apologetic expression Henry gives the camera when he makes yet another pothole for you to fix. Can you share any details about that scene?

Superman is doing everything that he can to keep the public safe, defending the planet from General Zod. So the potholes he is creating with his landings are not meant for the destruction its just sort of happening, and he can't help that he's well Superman, and it's his way of saying sorry don't mean to make you work more. But hey it's the least I can do fix a few potholes while he keeps us safe. Thank god I got this big Super Bacon Burger to give me the energy to work.

How many times did you have to bite into that Super Bacon Cheeseburger before they got the right shot?

We had an over/under bet on set as to how many times I would do that. Most of the other shoots they do they said there could be a ton of bites, so I set the line at 54. I think it was actually like 40 something bites.

BBC denies 'Doctor Who' racism allegations

The BBC has responded to comments that Doctor Who is 'thunderously racist'.

A new collection of essays titled 'Doctor Who and Race'claims that the sci-fi programme is racist for failing to cast a black or Asian actor as the Time Lord and accuses the title character of being dismissive of black companions.

The BBC has responded to the accusations - which fans have branded "ridiculous" and "groundless" - denying any racism and pointing out the "diverse casting" of the series.

It said: "Doctor Who has a strong track record of diverse casting among both regular and guest cast. Freema Agyeman became the first black companion and Noel Clarke starred in a major role for five years [Mickey Smith]."

The essays also blast the programme for its 'outdated attitudes' amid suggestions that primitive cultures are portrayed as 'savages'.

The anthology's editor Lindy Orthia said: "The biggest elephant in the room is the problem privately nursed by many fans of loving a TV show when it is thunderingly racist."

The BBC added that characters are cast based on their acting ability and not their ethnicity.

A spokesperson said: "Reflecting the diversity of the UK is a duty of the BBC, and casting on Doctor Who is colour-blind. It is always about the best actors for the roles."

Leaked audition footage told us about the casting of Styr, the Magnar of Thenn for season 4 of Game of Thrones, but it seems we now have more names to add to the Official Pile of Awesome.

Tower of the Hand reports from a Q&A at ConQuesT 44 in Kansas City that George confirmed the show is at this very moment looking for season 4 characters:

Auditions are being held now for season 4 – including Styr the Magnar of Thenn, Mace Tyrell and OBERYN MARTELL!!

You can go HERE to read about Tower of the Hand’s recap of George’s appearance, as well as many of the things discussed in the Q&A.

Please give us Dorne and an awesome Red Viper!

So what does everyone think? Do any specific names come to mind for these roles? And assuming Oberyn, Ellaria, Mace, and Styr are now off the proverbial chopping block, chime in with your top 5 “most necessary” season 4 castings! Who else are you dying to see? I’m curious!

Beyonce Increases Security for London Show

A nervous Beyonce has increased the security for her show in London on Saturday
amid fears of being attacked by a former Stan-turned-stalker.

London’s Daily Mail reports that the 37-year-old (see the expression lines around her mouth for proof) mother-of-one met fan Bassey Essien at a function in London in 2009, where he attempted to give her a diary full of religious notes. Since then Essien has mailed numerous letters to Beyonce.

Police can’t keep Essien out of Beyonce’s concert if he has a valid ticket. So Beyonce’s legal team went to a London court to get a restraining order against the young man.

A source told UK’s The Sun, “Staff have been briefed on the situation and pictures of him have been passed round. They’ve been told to keep their eyes open and be extra vigilant.

“Security has been increased on a few engagements now, especially for her UK promo. It is believed similar letters to the ones that Essien sent have been received.”

Security was lax at Bey’s concert in Serbia in April when a fan almost snatched Beyonce bald. Then this past Monday another fan slapped Beyonce’s arse in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Amanda Bynes -- COPS GOT NOTHING ... When It Comes to Drugs

$
0
0

The Amanda Bynes drug case is falling apart ... FAST ... because the cops have absolutely NO HARD EVIDENCE that Amanda was ever in possession of weed, this based on information TMZ has obtained from law enforcement.

An NYPD official told TMZ ... the police report mentions NOTHING of any marijuana recovered at the scene. According to the report, cops saw Amanda throw what they believe is "drug paraphernalia" out the window. The report also says cops smelled "a strong odor of marijuana."

Based on multiple calls to law enforcement and others ... it appears NO DRUGS were recovered ... and that's what Amanda has been saying all along.

As for the alleged bong ... it's almost certain it will never be admitted into evidence. TMZ broke the story ... our producer spotted glass remnants on a sub-roof Tuesday and then called police and asked if they had inspected it. He was told they hadn't, and was asked for the location where the glass was found. Cops arrived a short time later and presumably checked the sub-roof.

Here's the problem ... No one knows if anyone tampered with the glass remnants which sat for days, in the rain. The chain of custody has been irretrievably broken and it's virtually certain the glass would not be admissible into evidence.

Short story ... even if prosecutors try to nail Amanda for reckless endangerment by throwing something out the window -- she confessed to throwing a vase -- there's no physical evidence of what was thrown. We've spoken with several lawyers who say it will be extremely difficult to convict her on reckless endangerment without physical evidence.

Short story -- if you're betting on this one, Amanda seems to be a pretty safe gamble.
