MTV’s ‘Catfish’ TV Show Succeeds Where The Film Failed

0
0
dev

Sometimes a TV show really can be better than the film from whence it came.
In 2010, Nev Shulman debuted his documentary, Catfish, which followed his journey to meet the girl he fell in love with on Facebook. Despite the marketing campaign for the film, which positioned it as some horror flick with a dangerous or paranormal twist, Shulman’s journey (SPOILER ALERT!) ended in a farmhouse with a middle-aged mother and wife who’d been creating false Facebook personas to stave off her own loneliness and boredom. It was an unexpected twist, for sure, but where audiences were expecting pure, radical shock and awe, we found our surprise coupled with something truly, deeply sad: a person whose life was so unlike the life they wanted that they felt the need to create another. When translated into a television show with a premise based up front on that emotional concept, the product is something that feels as if it has the momentum to move the discovery forward, instead of wallowing in the shock of the 180-degree turnaround.

The first episode of Catfish: The TV Show, focuses on Sunny, a young woman who’s in an online relationship with a male model in L.A. … who also works at Chelsea Lately and writes for the show … and also writes cue cards? What an overachiever! In truth, as most viewers probably guessed from the premise of the show, this wonderful, magical Skype-allergic RJ guy is actually an 18 year-old girl named Chelsea who started the account as a means of revenge against someone who bullied her on Facebook. The lie started to consume her because she felt like an outcast in real life, and her online model persona afforded her the means to make easy connections with other girls online as she explored her bisexuality. And that’s where the show truly manages to surpass its cinematic source material.

Whereas Shulman’s film was about his own experience, told in a firsthand way, this series takes Shulman out of the equation and lets him be a guide for the misled halves of these online relationships. Because he’s experienced this sensation and wealth of emotions himself, he knows exactly what to ask both the victims and the perpetrators to elicit the response that gets right down to the heart of it all: Sunny's search for a connection, any connection, and Chelsea's muddled self-exploration gone awry. What we find is more shocking than the film’s original surprise: the truth behind the victim’s reasons for believing the illusion and of course, the truth behind the fakers’ decision-making process.

The first episode finds Sunny fumbling over herself to make excuses for her fake boyfriend, even when Shulman comes forward with a wealth of information that refutes “RJ’s” story, including outlandish claims of emotional blockage when Shulman finds out RJ’s supposedly deceased sisters are still very much alive. Taking his own emotions out of play and letting us experience this phenomenon in an upfront and honest way makes it more honest. It feels like something that could happen to a friend or someone we know very well. It no longer feels like a detached incident blown up for the purposes of a money-making feature film. And in that way, it makes the emotional and mental gymnastics behind these events grounded and significant. These aren’t the problems of a filmmaker in a swanky office in downtown Manhattan, these are things that are happening to a guy who could be your brother’s best friend or a girl you know from the gym. It hits much closer to our own lives when we’re let in on the ground level.

Add to that the wealth of possible outcomes offered by the series and this Catfish suddenly offers something the film really couldn’t: a true exploration of the psychological effects of an online world that inherently allows for self-obfuscation. It’s an element that hits close to anyone with an online presence, because to an extent, we all do it. The anonymity of social media gives us the tools to craft how that community views us. And while few of us are likely posing as completely different people and having online relationships with complete strangers, the concept of using the medium to shift one’s definition of themselves isn’t all that inconceivable. We do it every time we untag an unflattering photo or contemplate six different status posts before sending them through the Twittersphere. Catfish takes that to an extreme, but to an extreme that exists in the real world.

Perhaps the film could have enjoyed this benefit if the big secret had been prefaced even a little, but it fell victim to the shock game. Luckily for MTV, this series has enough shock to draw a crowd, but finds its worth in what comes after each big reveal, each of which hit midway through the episode. While it's harder to watch, it's something that is far more valuable than some reality-TV-tailored moment, no matter how fun it is to yell things like "Oh no he didn't!" at your television.

Chris Cornell Says Smashing Pumpkins’ Billy Corgan Owes Him $40,000

It’s taken 15 long years, but on Tuesday Soundgarden finally release their first new studio album in a decade and a half, King Animal. Frontman Chris Cornell says that despite the exceptionally long hiatus, he didn’t feel any pressure while recording the album.

“We have a fan base that knows who we are,” Cornell tells ABC News Radio. “We don’t really have to compete with other bands, there’s no other version of what we do, so there’s no pressure really at all except for we have a musical legacy and whatever we do now, has to live up to that. And that’s a pressure that I suppose we put on ourselves.”

A few months ago, The Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan slammed Soundgarden for making King Animal, claiming that their decision to reunite was motivated solely by money. “I was a fan of Soundgarden, but call [King Animal] for what it is,” Corgan told a Filipino publication. “They’re just out there to have one more round at the till.”

Now, Cornell has fired back at Corgan saying he remembers a time when money was very important to the Pumpkins frontman. “When Billy Corgan was completely broke, I got him a movie deal with [director] Cameron Crowe where he made $40,000,” Cornell tells ABC News Radio. “He was very happy about that, and he was specifically happy about the $40,000. So next time you see him, tell him owes me my $40,000 back.”

'Paranormal Activity 4' causes French audiences to riot, urinate in the theater

0
0

To date ‘Paranormal Activity 4‘ has made over $130 million in worldwide box-office. Not bad, but that doesn’t mean everyone is a fan. Exhibit A: the French. ‘Paranormal Activity 4′ opened in French theaters two weeks ago and was met with some…unhappy audiences. Audiences that expressed their frustration by looting the candy counters, verbally assaulting the workers and, yes, using the movie theater as a bathroom.

French distributor Wild Bunch issued a statement saying that the upcoming French premiere of ‘Sinister‘ would be pulled from over 40 theaters because of concerns over the behavior of ‘Paranormal Activity 4′ audiences. (‘Sinister’ is billed as being “from the producers of ‘Paranormal Activity’…)

The company said on their Facebook page (translation via Twitch) that the screenings of ‘Sinister’ were cancelled because ‘Paranormal Activity 4′ screenings resulted in “looting candy counters, insulting cashiers, urinating on seats, etc.” (If they listed “urinating on seats,” we’d have to see what the “etc.” is…)

They add:

Showing genre films in France is not easy, so we ask that our future spectators please be respectful of the rules of courtesy.

Showing horror films is difficult in France? That’s a new piece of information.

‘Sinister’ still opened at some theaters in France and reportedly went off without nary a seat-pissing incident. As for what caused the near-riots at the ‘Paranormal Activity 4′ screening, it’s not entirely clear but it certainly gives new meaning to a horror movie making someone pee their pants.

'Catching Fire' movie logo reveal may premiere with 'Twilight: Breaking Dawn 2'

As filming for “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” continues this month, a new image from Tumblr this Tuesday, Nov. 13, reveals a sneak peek logo to the searing hot sequel film may have its premiere in theaters this upcoming weekend with the arrival of “Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 2.”

The new image on the Tumblr account reveals a notice that would normally be privy to movie employees at the “Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 2” theater showing itself. The slip of paper notes that the "Twilight" film preview may include a “Now You See Me” clip and most interestingly, “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” reveal of the film's official logo.

Fellow fans cannot be certain at this point what “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” logo may mean or look like, but it is likely only the sequel’s insignia for now, not a teaser trailer for the upcoming adaptation in “The Hunger Games” trilogy.

While fans of “Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 2” may not always be fans of “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” (or vice-versa), those who are both Twi-hards and “Catching Fire” followers alike may certainly get a double debut surprise at the “Breaking Dawn Part 2” premiere next week, so stay tuned!

“Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 2” is set to be released this Friday, Nov. 16, while Katniss Everdeen and the cast in “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” will take flame in theaters next November 2013.

Tyler Posey can't look away when his dog is pooping

+He lost the role of Jacob Black

Actor Taylor Lautner beat out Teen Wolf star and childhood friend Tyler Posey for his leading role in the Twilight film franchise.

Posey, who plays Scott McCall in the popular teen TV series, initially tried out for the part of Native American Jacob Black, who turns into a werewolf, on the hit vampire movies.

When I don't get the part, I never dwell too much on it

The 21 year old even screen tested with leading lady Kristen Stewart but he failed to win over casting agents.

During an episode of MTV series This Is How I Made It, which is set to air in America on Saturday (10Nov12), Posey says, "I was very excited because I was a fan of (Stewart's). I saw Taylor Lautner at all of these auditions, and I knew he was auditioning for Twilight also. I remember I saw him at an audition a few months after, and I was like, 'Hey man, what have you been up to?'

"And he was like, 'I was filming Twilight.' That's when I found out I didn't get the part".

But Posey insists he doesn't harbor any ill will towards Lautner, who was also raised in Santa Monica, California.

He adds, "We had a very similar career, and we grew up in the same town, and eventually we became friends and started talking because I saw him at literally every audition..

Ausiello blind item: Pregnancy shocker

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

This isn’t so much a blind item as it is, say, a far-sighted one. But, before I explain why, let me give you your clues:

As the headline on this story foretells, a certain female character is about to be paid a visit by the stork. (Her delicate condition will be revealed on air sometime in the next three months.) What the headline doesn’t hint at, however, is that the gal in question is a lead on an established series (i.e., more than a season old).

When Madame X finds out that she’s with child, she’ll be — understatement alert! — shocked. Fans of the show, by contrast, will likely love the plot twist.

Now, as for the “far-sighted” element of this “blind” item: The mystery woman is one of the 13 suspects included in the gallery below.

Andy Cohen Forced to Apologize for Calling One Direction 'Twinks'

0
0
Twink is now derogatory. Brits throw around the word cunt like Americans throw around the term dickhead. I doubt One Erection will be scarred for life over being called twinks.

Bravo TV executive Andy Cohen has reportedly come under fire for calling One Direction 'twinks', which is often considered a derogatory gay reference.

"No joke just walked right into One Direction greenroom!! The blond dude was shirtless #HolyTwink."

Appearing on the Today Show just hours after Harry Styles and co had performed in front of their thousands of fans who had queued for days to see them, Cohen recalled the moment when he saw the band in the green room.

He said: "This morning, I went into the normal green room that we typically go into. I barged in, there are all these people in front of us. Oh, it's all the leftover One Direction fans. I barged right into a room of twinks: One Direction! Security was not exactly too tight, with all due respect. I barged right in. It was crazy!"

The term "twinks" is said to be a slang word for young gay men and is deemed to be offensive and derogatory.

However, Cohen didn't just use the term in his interview. Minutes before going on set for his interview, Cohen tweeted : "No joke just walked right into One Direction greenroom!! The blond dude was shirtless #HolyTwink."

Taking to his Twitter page after reportedly getting tweets from One Direction fans who were unhappy with his comments, Cohen apologised saying:

"Misused word earlier — I just meant they’re cute. #1D” But he has left his tweet from earlier still on his official page.

Believing that the term 'Twink' isn't offensive, A spokesperson for One Direction told us: "I don’t think the term ‘Twink’ is offensive – it just means attractive!"

Did Lindsay Lohan lie about her mother having an alleged cocaine problem? Dina Lohan sets the record straight for ET's Christina McLarty.

"Absolutely lied. We were having an argument, it escalated," explains Dina of their October altercation which was recorded by her father, Michael Lohan. "She just wanted to hurt me at that moment. You know, mothers [and] daughters, we fight.

Dina tells Christina that it pained her to see that private family moment "go public and viral." As for accusations that she uses cocaine, Dina replies, "I hate cocaine. I don't do cocaine."

After Lindsay proclaimed that she was not being truthful about her accusations against her mother about cocaine use, Dina says, "I'm so proud of her for telling the truth because it destroyed me. I mean, I cried for weeks. It just hurt me so bad and she knew how horrible that was, and she came clean and told the truth that she lied. I'm very proud of her for that, which is very difficult to have to do."

Dina adds, "There's so much more to the story than the public sees, and it takes its toll on my children and myself, and we're just trying to move forward."

Oprah Shoots ‘Next Chapter’ With ‘Scandal’s Kerry Washington

X Factor's Arin Ray on Making girls go crazy, Connecting with the audience, and Britney

0
0
The first time Arin Ray was on The X Factor (last year), he was part of the group inTENsity. While they made it pretty far, the experience did not show off Arin’s mad vocal skills to the max. So, we were delighted that he made it into Britney Spears’ Top 4 Teens group, and even happier that he is moving on to the Top 12.

What has your experience been like so far this year? Yo, this year is amazing, it’s definitely different than being in a group, so it’s pretty awesome being solo and seeing the fans react to me and the world react to me in a very special way.

What has been different compared to last year in regards to your fans’ reactions and the judge’s reactions?
Being in a group you’re not really singled out, so it’s really not everything coming towards you. Now, I’ve got girls and fan clubs and everything. It’s crazy and for them to react to me like that and the reactions from the judges is really crazy; it’s really awesome.

Are you dating or do you have a girlfriend right now?
No, currently I’m not dating. I love girls — I think they’re awesome — but right now I’m just trying to focus on the show and then maybe afterwards I might get me a little girlfriend for waiting. But it would be awesome to share something like this with someone so it’s pretty awesome.

What do you want to sing?
What do I want to sing? I don’t know, I don’t know if I’m allowed!

What will your strategy be this season?
My strategy this season is to make the girls go nuts!

How do you plan on doing that?Just make them feel special — when I’m singing an emotional song, then I want them to feel like the girl I’m talking about in that song. I want them to feel what I’m feeling when I’m singing that song and just to connect to everybody. I want to connect to the world. That’s what I want to do, I want to share the world what I have and show the world something new and fresh.

What is the best advice you’ve received from you mentor, Britney? You know the best advice I’ve gotten from Britney (Spears) is to spill everything out on stage. I’ve soaked up everything last year and to this year and at this point just spill it out on stage and give it my all.

Does she understand you as an artist? Oh, she most definitely understands me, that’s why we bond so much because she knows I’m a performer. I love to entertain and that’s what she’s done and made millions off of. Britney is amazing.

What is one thing you’ve learned from her that will stick with you after this competition is over? Just be me, just be myself. Nobody can do me better than me so really just give it my all and put everything on the stage. Leave my heart on the stage.

What is something we would be surprised to know about Britney? I guess some people would say she may be stand-offish but I see her as just a person, she’s just a regular person. She loves to talk to me just as much as I love to talk to her, so it’s amazing. She very open and I love her for that.

Who has supported you the most throughout this experience? My mom. She’s pretty awesome, she’s been there from day one since birth and she’s here with me now. It’s amazing for her to be here and it’s very awesome to have someone like that in your life. So my mom has done pretty much everything for me.

sourcepoor bb he has potential as a performer but he's def on the chopping block this week.

Once Upon a Time Updates: Casting News & Spoilers

0
0

Oh, brother. This latest piece of Once Upon a Time casting gives new meaning to the phrase “adding a limb to the family tree.”

TVLine has learned exclusively that the sophomore ABC drama has cast Chad Michael Collins as Gerhardt, a younger brother of David Anders’ Dr. Whale.

Gerhardt is described as an athletic and good-natured military man who is filled with idealism, “the kind of son any parent would be proud of.”

The character’s tie to Whale of course also hints that, given the reveal in the recent episode “The Doctor,” he is Dr. Victor Frankenstein’s brother, who according to literary canon as well as Once‘s interpretation, was the subject of an electrifying reanimation.

Collins will guest-star in Episode 12 of Season 2. The actor’s recent TV credits include ABC’s Last Resort (as Redman, the naval officer that Serrat killed when Chaplin didn’t meet a deadline), Major Crimes, 2 Broke Girls and Ringer.

Once Upon a Time: Who Might Be Alive?

With so many new characters coming and going on Once Upon a Time Season 2, we often wish we’d gotten to know them better before they either died (Quinn) or disappeared (Lancelot). So imagine our surprise and delight when we saw this photo.

Jamie Chung (Mulan) tweeted the photo on November 13, writing “don’t be jealous ladies...” That’s Jamie with Julian Morris aka Prince Philip! They appear to be on a plane together, which doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re on set together filming scenes for OUAT, but they were scene partners in the Season 2 premiere (Season 2, Episode 1: “Broken”). So we definitely have our hopes up.

As we pointed out after the premiere, Prince Philip never technically died. Mr. Gold’s summoned wraith stole his soul, but the lost souls could still be heard once they’d left the body. That suggests that the person isn’t actually dead, just temporarily displaced.

Do you think this photo is a sign that Prince Philip is alive? If so, is there any way he can travel to Storybrooke in a portal? Or will he just set up house with Mulan and Sleeping Beauty (Sarah Bolger) in present-day Fairytale Land? Fingers crossed!

The Hour S2E1 review (Excuse for a discussion post)

0
0

The first rule of temptation is to yield to it slowly, says a sozzled roué surrounded by semi-clad lovelies, it’s much more fun that way… The Hour is back and, the silly conspiracy strand sewn up at the end of the first series, better than ever.

The BBC’s Lime Grove studios were never going to be a match for Madison Avenue but television news with its endless deadlines is far more exciting than advertising. If Abi Morgan’s retro-soap can’t be Mad Men it doesn’t lack bad men: Hector Madden, the alcoholic news anchor (Dominic West oozing sleazy charm); Angus McCain, a shifty Whitehall mandarin (Julian Rhind-Tutt riven and tormented by homosexuality); and – hurrah! – Randall Brown, the new head of news (Peter Capaldi, pictured below, at his most sepulchral) who may just turn out to be one of the good guys.

Brown – who lines up drawing pins on notice boards – has been brought in by the top brass to add edge and bite to Auntie’s flagship news programme – those were the days my friends – something which ITV’s new show, Uncovered, has in spades. His first major move is to bring back Freddie Lyon (the winsome Ben Whishaw) to co-host the show with Madden. Needless to say, the drunken divo doesn’t like it and allows himself to be wooed by ITV.

Lyon wastes no time in stealing Madden’s scoop about Super Mac’s government using fear of nuclear annihilation to justify swingeing cuts to the police budget. The crime rate has risen by 30%; 176 people were murdered last year. The stench of decay and decline – the smell of naughty folk having a good time – hangs over Soho where club owners, pimps and pornographers are in cahoots with the cops.

Director Sandra Goldbacher makes much of the contrast between the utilitarian offices of Lime Grove and the bright lights of the West End. The period music, the dancing girls and oceans of champagne prove very tempting – and not just to Madden whose maddened stay-at-home wife takes out her frustration by baking at midnight. When one of Madden’s pick-ups is beaten up the stage is thus set for a genuinely newsworthy scandal.

The female members of the cast are the main attraction: not just their frocks and facial furniture but the way they react to the chauvinists who surround them. Romola Garai as producer Bel Rowley has a face that could launch a thousand clips. She shows fury when Brown undermines her authority but heartbreaking confusion and shock when she learns by chance that Lyon – for whom she carries a torch – has married a sexy mademoiselle in his absence. Meanwhile, Anna Chancellor, pictured above left, as newshound Lix Storm has a voice that makes your stomach flip with desire.

The historic detail is laid on with a trowel: Laika is shot into space to face a lonely death; Mario Lanza is in town; Dior is dead; and postcodes are coming. Drinks trays boast bottles of Martini. This certainly could not be any time anywhere.

Brown believes that the viewer must “feel the tingle” while watching The Hour. This one sure did.

Bob Barker Oil Painting Is On Sale For Millions On eBay

bb

The Huffington Post | By Drew Guarini
Feel all warm and fuzzy remembering Bob Barker's legendary run as host of "The Price Is Right"?

Well, come on down to eBay where you can score an epic so-bad-it's-good oil painting of the former game show host for...

In the spirit of the television game show, we'd like you to guess. Tick, tock, tick, tock...

User nscocoa is listing the Barker masterwork for $3.5 million.

While some might be tempted to proclaim righteously that "the price is wrong", the man behind the sale -- an artist by the name of Gerald L. Sabatini -- is either doing a good job of trolling the art world or he's just delusional. His blog lists his home base as Troy, Penn., and his artwork is listed on several websites, all with the same high prices.

The piece depicting Barker comes "hand made sculptured, painted & signed" by the artist according to the auction. The puppies are a loving homage to Barker's pet charity. Flowers and hearts, well, we imagine Sabatini believes they just look good. He did not respond to The Huffington Post's request for comment.

Also dotting the landscape, the show's famous "Big Wheel."

Barker, age 88, hosted "The Price Is Right" for 35 years, some of it ensnared in controversy involving lawsuits from former female employees. Now hosted by Drew Carey, the "Price Is Right" is the longest running game show in television history.

Sabatini's eBay page is a place where the serious meets the surreal. For every $30,000 snowy morning snowscape, there's a $2 million Gene Simmons portrait to accompany it.

At the time of this writing there was still over 5 days to "win" the $3.5 million Barker portrait.

Lego Lord of the rings game launches with new trailer and packaging error

Yesterday marked the launch of LEGO's latest video game, LEGO Lord of the Rings! LEGO released a launch trailer to celebrate the release (which can be viewed alongside this article). It is now available on US consoles, including Xbox 360, PC, and Playstation 3. A PC demo is also available for free download here.

Here's a list of major game features:

  • Explore all of the open-world of Middle-earth and experience epic battles with Orcs, Uruk-hai, the Balrog, the Witch-king, and other fearsome creatures.
  • Wield the power of the Palantír or Seeing-stone (?one that looks far-away?), and jump between multiple storylines.
  • Experience the LEGO The Lord of the Rings heroes come to life in an all new way with the minifig characters delivering the dialogue from the films.
  • Discover and unlock over more than 60 playable characters, including Frodo, Aragorn, Gandalf, and many others.
  • Collect and use a variety of weaponry and magical items, including the Light of Earendil, Elven rope, swords, and bows.

Warner Bros. has updated players on the situation with a recall issue, saying that while the discs were marked as demos, they were actually fully playable versions.Unfortunately, alongside the long-awaited launch of LEGOLOTR came an unexpected error. Apparently, after some players purchased their copy of the game, they opened the packages to discover discs marked as demos, rather than full game versions.

The statement reads:

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment is recalling a small number of LEGO The Lord of the Rings video games that were released for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft to Walmart, Target and Toys 'R' Us in the United States with a disc labeling error. The discs in question are incorrectly labeled as demo discs, but those discs do contain the full game content and are fully functional. This error does not affect any other formats of the game. We are in the process of remanufacturing the discs and will get them to the stores as soon as possible. Consumers who purchased a copy of the Xbox 360 version of the game with the disc labeling error can contact customer support via email atsupport@wbgames.com or phone at 410-568-3680 for a replacement disc.

Behold this year’s winners who were all clearly hard up for cash and connections

Winner:
Greg Chait won for his lush knitwear-based collection The Elder Statesman which sells expensive-ass blankets starting at $2,000 bucks. Greg is the former CEO of Tsubi jeans- a company that made over $20 million in 2007. He also dated Ashley Olsen.

Runners Up
Jennifer Meyer Maguire: She’s a jewelry designer who’s married to actor Tobey Maguire. Her dad is Universal Studios president Ron Meyer. Her celeb clients and friends include Jennifer Aniston, Kate Hudson, and Reese Witherspoon . So as you can see she desperately needs both financing and connections. It’s not like she can roll over in bed and ask Tobey-poo to break her off from their joint account or ask her loaded Daddy for funds. It’s better that she accept money that could go to talented designers who actually need it.

Tabitha Simmons:Former Model and shoe designer and who happens to be married to one of the top fashion photographers in the World— Craig McDean . Craig shoots for lowly-regarded magazines like Vogue & W and has done campaigns for little known brands like Gucci, Oscar de la Renta, Yves Saint Laurent, Calvin Klein…etc. It’s doubtful that his income and connections with stylists, designers, and editors along with her own connections from modeling would have been of any use to Simmons though. While you mull that over you can check out pics of their Chelsea apartment that was featured in Vogue—and you know Vogue only features the homes of really poor people.

Seriously, how you gonna have a fund that gives money and mentorship to people who are already wealthy and well-connected?

ONTDers who have design aspirations—you needn’t worry. All you have to do is be born rich or marry someone rich then walk by Anna Wintour’s office and you’re all set.
