ONTD Original: 35 celebs who have ADHD

$

0
For all we hear about it, ADHD (Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) is subject to common misconceptions and persistant negative stereotypes. In truth, people of all ages, races, professions and stages of life are diagnosed and treated for ADHD. Anyone can suffer from the disorder, so it's likely to affect more people than you think.

ADHD often goes undiagnosed because the symptoms differ from person to person and are more subtle in adults. Symptoms include inattentiveness, distractibility, lack of focus or hyperfocus, impulsivity, chronic boredom, disorganization, bad time management, forgetfulness, low tolerance for frustration, restlessness, poor self-control and difficulty setting/reaching goals. ADHD can be a huge struggle since it can strongly affect work, relationships and other aspects of daily life, but it doesn't have to stand in the way of a productive and successful life. People with ADHD are often extraordinarily creative, adventurous, innovative and fully capable of making their mark on this world, as the following 35 examples show:

1. Channing Tatum
Tatum did poorly in school because of his learning and attention issues. He was prescribed medication for his ADHD but continued to struggle because the school didn’t properly address his learning needs. Tatum never considered himself a very smart person, he said in an interview. “Not having early success on that one path messes with you. You get lumped in classes with kids with autism and Down syndrome, and you look around and say, ‘OK, so this is where I’m at.’ Or you get put in the typical classes and you say, ‘All right, I’m obviously not like these kids either.’ So you’re kind of nowhere. You’re just different. The system is broken ... we should be able to help kids who struggle the way I did.”

2. Simone Biles
The gymnast superstar took a stand for mental health after leaked medical records revealed her use of a stimulant, Ritalin, commonly used to treat ADHD. “I have ADHD and I have taken medicine for it since I was a kid,” Biles tweeted. Thanks to the support of his parents and his doctor, he was able to move forward with a treatment plan that worked. His struggles continued as an adult, when he realized ADHD was affecting his career as it had is schoolwork. "I had trouble sometimes writing songs and recording in the studio. Well over a year ago, I took a different medication for the same condition (Ritalin rather than Adderall), and to assure everyone that the error was a one-time mistake, I agreed to be voluntarily tested in the "NFL Program". Smurfs Lost Village centers on a mysterious map that sets Smurfette Demi Lovato and her friends Brainy, Clumsy and Hefty on a race through the Forbidden Forest leading to the discovery of the biggest secret in Smurf history. Unfortunately, audiences weren't here for it earning $3.5 million-$4.5 million on Friday for a muted opening in the $14 million-$15 million range, while Boss Baby and Beauty will battle for the top spot with $25 million or more.

Meanwhile the Smurfs didn't fair to do any better. The soundtrack featuring problematic Nantucket native Megan Trainor failed to chart.... anywhere.

To recap: 3 Generations is the film that was formerly About Ray. The film premiered at the 2015 Toronto Film Festival and was supposed to be released in theatres later that month. Instead it was abruptly pulled, possibly because of bad reviews, possibly because of all the negative press the writer-director got for referring to the character that Elle Fanning plays (who is a trans boy) as a girl, possibly because of Weinstein's financial woes or maybe a combo of all three.

"It Still Moves a Lot of People": Ellen Page Looks Back at Juno 10 Years Later

Ellen Page and Jennifer Garner will be doing a live reading of the 'Juno' script today to benefit Planned Parenthood.

On revisiting the script: "I don't know if there's something specific. What it really comes down is taking it back to the very first time I ever read the screenplay that Diablo wrote. I was just utterly blown away and taken in: 'Holy shit! This is so phenomenal and unique and I have to play this girl.' That feeling of excitement, laughter, tears. … I'm excited about celebrating this beautiful thing she wrote. It still moves a lot of people.".

On Planned Parenthood: "In Canada I didn't grow up with this sort of debate. For me personally, Planned Parenthood is just about people having access to life-saving health care, whether it's about trying to get an abortion or Pap smears, or it's a trans woman seeking health care or a low-income person, it's pivotal and important. It's just that simple. To deny people's rights is horrific. Imagine all the queer people who are already suffering who can lose access to health care. It's just life or death. That's the reality."

On future roles: "I'm always trying to make LGBTQ stories, quite frankly, movies that include more queerness. I have a film in post now that's a love story between two women [titled Mercy]. I'm always trying to figure out things I can develop that incorporate more visibility. Selfishly I enjoy it, too."
