Reezy Doesn't Mind Fame; Doesn't Believe in Phelps Retirement

Ryan Lochte embraces celebrity status, looks forward to Rio in 2016

Now that his Olympics are done, the silly season has begun for swimmer Ryan Lochte. He sat on a podium at the Proctor & Gamble Family Home on Sunday, his face lathered in shaving cream as part of a photo opportunity for one of his sponsors, Gillette. He was presented with a blinged-out razor, which he held up for the cameras while flashing his famous red-white-and-blue grill. Moments later he fielded a question about Dancing with the Stars. (Yes, he'd like to be on it. Very much. No, any partner would be fine, because all the female dancers are beautiful. Against whom would he like to compete? Michael Phelps, of course.)

And so it goes. This will be Lochte's life for a little while -- working with sponsors, publicists and media who are less interested in him as an athlete than as a celebrity. His five-medal haul at the Games was not solid gold, the way he had envisioned -- a pair of silvers and a bronze were mixed in -- but the medals, combined with what appears to be serious sex appeal, have made him a hot commodity. He's ready for his close-up. "It's fun for me," he said. "I'm so used to being out there in a Speedo, that being on display is nothing new. I'm looking forward to all of it."

He's looking forward to other things, too, like 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro. Lochte, who turned 28 on Friday, reiterated that he has no plans just yet to sit on the porch with Phelps, his newly retired rival, and reminisce about the old days. He's not convinced that Phelps is, either. "No, I'm not completely buying it," Lochte says. "I think he totally means it right now when he says he's done, but I think it could be that he just needed a break after these last four years," Lochte says. "I wouldn't be surprised if the itch back after some time off. If he is done, though, I'm going to miss him. It'll be strange getting into the pool at a big competition and not seeing him there, and I like competing against the best."

Phelps' absence might not be the only thing that's different when Lochte gets into the pool from now on. In light of his advancing years, he and his coach, Gregg Troy, have talked about exploring other events, perhaps dropping the 400 individual medley in favor of shorter sprints. "The 400 IM might go eventually," Lochte said, "but I told him I will stop swimming it only after someone beats me. And I haven't been beaten in the past three years."

He had his sights set on going unbeaten in London, but wound up with silvers in the 200 IM and 400 freestyle relay, as well as a silver in the 200 backstroke. "I consider myself an A student," he says, "but I'd have to give my self an A- for London. I wanted to do better, but I don't think that five medals is anything to be disappointed about. Not winning is just motivation for getting back in the pool."

But that won't happen right away, Lochte plans to stay out of the water for a couple of weeks of physical and mental rest. "I'll still be training in other ways, in the weight room," he say. "I like looking good." He needs to keep his body trim enough to model pieces from the clothing line he plans to create. Some of his admirers would no doubt like him to stick to the Speedo. "Designing clothes is something I've always been interested in, both sportswear and suits," he says. "I like getting dressed up, putting on a suit and going all out. It makes you feel strong, confident."

All of that will have to wait, however, while Lochte goes through his post-Olympic paces. He had one more task on Sunday at the P&G House -- holding up the traditional oversized check signifying the company's $25,000 donation to the USOC's Team USA youth sports fund aimed at providing sports development for a broader range of children.

"Being able to do things to help people, that's the good part of all this," he says. The not-so-good part is being put through the celebrity grinder, in which every comment becomes grist for the gossip mill. Lochte found that out recently when his mother mentioned that his love life consists of "one-night stands" -- a phrase that does not mean what she thought it means. "No big deal," he says. "All part of the game."

Lochte is ready to play. Dancing with the Stars, he's ready to take your call. Would his old rival, Phelps, take the bait and join him? "I don't know about that," Lochte said. "Wouldn't bet on it."

DC vs. Marvel: Hawkman vs. Thor

0

hawkmanthor

For as long as there have been comic books, there has been the feud between DC and Marvel. Both are heavy-hitting comic companies that continue to gain legions of fans every year. The purpose of this column is to take one DC persona and one Marvel persona of equal measure and popularity and pit them against each other to see who come out on top.

bckgrnd

Background:

Carter Hall’s soul is the reincarnation of Prince Khufu of Egypt. Now an archeologist, Hall has memories of his past life and has thus adopted the motif of the God Horus for his Hawkman persona. His is married to Sheila Carr, the reincarnation of his Egyptian love and identity of Hawkgirl. The two were founding members of the Justice Society of America and had a son together. Following the event known as the Crisis on Infinite Earths, Hawkman and the JSA became trapped in a battle in an ever-repeating Ragnarok. During the events of Zero Hour, Carter died but was brought back to life years later to stop the evil Onimar Synn from enslaving the planet. He joined back up with the JSA and had many adventures, includes some in space. In the DC reboot, Hawkman is dealing with the death of Sheira but returns to his superhero lifestyle to protect New York.

Thor is the Asgardian God of Thunder, son of Odin the All-Father. Thor was raised alongside his adopted brother Loki, who would eventually become his greatest foe. As a child and teenager Thor was responsible for many heroic deeds while learning to have the pure heart needed to wield Mjonir and soon became Asgard’s greatest warrior. Over time Thor made many trips to Earth but it was in our recent modern age that he was sent here by Odin to learn humility and given a human alter ego named Donald Blake, in whose likeness he fell in love with Jane Foster, which complicated his Asgardian romance with Sif. When Thor regained his memories he divided his time between Asgard and Earth and began to work with The Avengers to stop various enemies, including his brother Loki.

Both superheroes have lived many centuries (whether in body or in soul) and both have rich histories of love and battle spanning the years. They are parallel in this and as such, neither outdoes the other.

Point: TIE

weapons

Skills:

Since Carter Hall was a priest in his past life, he possesses the power to bless mundane objects (turning water into Holy water, etc.). He can also “cheat death” in a sense because of his soul’s endless reincarnation, which includes the enormous amount of knowledge passed on to him each time. He is also proficient in many types of weaponry from all different time periods.

Because he is a God, Thor is the strongest man in creation and durable enough to withstand blasts from strong forces. This includes superhuman senses, stamina, sustenance, healing abilities and longevity. He also has energy manipulation powers. Like other Asgardians, Thor has a powerful Life-force that keeps him alive and strong. He also has the “gift of forgetfulness” that he uses to take away memories from humans when needed.

Both Hawkman and Thor possess enormous amounts of power but Thor’s Life-force gives him the edge over Carter Hall.

Point: Thor

affil

Affiliations:

Hawkman served as a founder and chair of the Justice Society of America. He is currently a member of the Justice League and a former member of the All-Star Squadron. He sometimes also works with Hawkgirl separately on missions.

As an Asgardian, Thor often works with his kinsmen to defeat foes, usually Loki or The Enchantress. He is also a main member of The Avengers and a former member of the God Squad, Queen’s Vengeance, and Godpack.

Both Hawkman and Thor are major joiners with long resumes of affiliations, and this round is also a tie.

Point: TIE

fight

Apparel/Weapons:

Hawkman wears Nth metal armor which can be stored beneath his skin and manifest itself whenever needed. This armor allows him to fly through the use of anti-gravity belt and boots and his wings control navigation and guidance during flight. The metal itself also increases Carter’s strength, vision, temperature regulation, and healing ability and has electromagnetic properties. He is also super durable with it, withstanding blows from powerful foes. His weaponry is extensive but Hawkman prefers to use a mace and flail.

Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir, is one of the most famous weapons in comic-book history. Made from Uru metal, it is durable and magical. It’s strong enough to break mountains and cannot be wielded by anyone unworthy (few others besides Thor himself can even pick it up). Mjolnir can obey Thor’s commands, control the weather, and even grant Thor temporary flight, as well as multiple other powers. Thor also wears Meginjord, a magical belt that enhances his abilities.

Thor has an impressive hammer but Hawkman has wings and nearly indestructible armor to go along with his weapons. Both heroes have an impression array of weaponry but when conjuring images of Hawkman, you always picture him with his armor, helmet and wings. He is never parted from them in the readers’ eyes’ and for that, he wins this round.

Point: Hawkman

HMthorsocial

Social Relevance:

Hawkman has appeared in many forms of media. In the 1979 Legends of the Superheroes TV Special he was played by Bill Nuckols. More recently, he has shown up in the TV series Smallville for a handful of episodes (played by Michael Shanks). Carter Hall also shows up in various animation pieces such as the 1967 The Superman/Aquaman Hour of Adventure, various Superfriend speciels, the more recent TV show Justice League and Justice League Unlimited as well as The Batman, Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Young Justice, and Mad. He is also in the direct-to-video DC Super Friends and various other animated movies. While Hawkman has been a constant presence in the DC world, he has yet to get his very own starring feature.

Thor is one of Marvel’s most popular characters and the mascot for all of Asgard. In the 1960’s Thor was the main part of an animated TV segment. He has had guest appearances in various animated shows recently including Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends, and Fantastic Four. He also appeared in the live action TV film The Incredible Hulk Returns. He was featured as a major player in the TV shows The Super Hero Squad and The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes as well as the feature-length animated films Ultimate Avengers and Ultimate Avengers 2 and Thor: Tales of Asgard. Thor’s big break came with the 2011 live-action film Thor in which Chris Hemsworth portrays the God (without his human alter-ego) and the very popular The Avengers. Thor has a sequel in the works as well as appearances in multiple video games.

While true blue comic fans know both heroes, it is the recent success of Marvel’s movies, especially The Avengers, that has catapulted Thor into the mainstream spotlight and gives him the win in this category.

Point: Thor

Hawkman and Thor are both imposing figures and constant members of The Justice League and The Avengers. They are Gods among men, more powerful than many of their fellow superheroes and both have intricate storylines spanning many years. Most of the categories in this battle put the two neck and neck, either resulting in a tie or one just barely coming out on top. However, there can only be one winner, and Thor’s newly revisited fame and intricate yet compelling storylines with his brother Loki make him the champion of this round of DC vs. Marvel.

WINNER:  Thor!

Tom Arnold makes surprise appearance at Comedy Central roast of Roseanne

Roseanne Barr appeared genuinely surprised when ex-husband Tom Arnold took the stage near the end of her Comedy Central Roast taping.

"We have not been in the same room for over 17 years," Arnold told the audience after taking the stage. Largely departing from the typical roast format, most of Arnold's comments toward Roseanne were positive and the pair even hugged after he stepped down from the dais. And while the audience did give Arnold one of the show's few standing ovations of the evening, even he wondered about the wisdom of making the surprise appearance, which Comedy Central officials said was unplanned until just before taping began.

"Is this really the best format to do this? Getting together with your ex at a roast," Arnold wondered out loud.

But it was clear Roseanne was touched by the appearance.

"I'd really like to thank Tom for showing up. It was very brave and he was very funny," Roseanne said when she took the stage to close out the roast. "But Jesus Christ how many jobs do I have to get that guy?"

The pair had a famously fractious four-year marriage from 1990 to 1994. And for years after their divorce, both Arnold and Barr continued to take shots at each other through the press.

However, Arnold seemingly put any former hard feelings aside and closed out his set with a sentimental tribute to Roseanne, recalling her breakthrough 1985 "Tonight Show" appearance with Johnny Carson that first thrust her into the national spotlight.

"Roseanne you were my Johnny Carson," Arnold said. "Thank you for your thumbs up and for letting me sit on your couch for a little bit."

Although most of the roast was focused on Roseanne's entertainment career, the comedian actress has also been pursuing a longshot presidential bid. On Saturday, she was formally nominated by the Peace and Freedom Party in Los Angeles.

Closing out the roast, Roseanne joked, "If I can bury my roiling, boiling ceaseless hatred for Tom Arnold maybe there is a chance for world peace."

Macaulay Culkin Comes Out Of Hiding To Attend Natalie Portman Wedding

Macaulay Culkin left his reclusive life in New York to attend Natalie Portman's California wedding Saturday night.

They've been "friends for years," a source told Us Weekly.

As RadarOnline.com reported, Portman and Benjamin Millepied married near Big Sur with just family and close friends in attendance.

Culkin's presence at the intimate ceremony comes on the heels of a National Enquirer story alleging that the former actor is a heroin addict.

His rep responded to the blockbuster story, calling it "not only categorically without merit, but it is also impossibly and ridiculously fictitious."

Culkin's super-thin appearance has had fans concerned about the Home Alone star for months though.

Macaulay had an eight-year long romance with Portman's Black Swan costar Mila Kunis that ended in late 2010. He has only rarely been seen in public since their break-up.

Skittles' Bestiality Ad Riles Up Critics, Grosses People Out

0
0

Skittles' new ad isn't shying away from controversy. Their latest is all about bestiality -- with a walrus -- and some people are up in arms over it.

John Nolte of Breitbart.com musters his best attack on what he calls a Hollywood agenda orchestrated by those who aim to "remove the stigma from bestiality": "You can laugh and say it's just a joke, but through a war of inches, Hollywood continues its assault to define deviancy down and to normalize destructive behavior. Humor is an excellent way to get us used to and to take the shock value out of something hideous and immoral."

Not sure we're buying it. As BoingBoing eloquently puts it, we "have to wonder ... at someone who watches this and thinks to himself, "This will make people want to f*ck walruses."

It doesn't make us want to eat Skittles, either.

Brigitte Nielsen drunk and disoriented in public park

0

Sylvester Stallone's former wife Brigitte Nielsen put on a tragic public display in a Los Angeles park Saturday.

The Danish actress and model drank directly from a bottle of cheap Popov vodka and also from an unlabeled mini bottle. She smoked cigarette after cigarette, and later stumbled to the grass where she appeared to pass out.

Wearing skin tight jeans and matching purple T-shirt and baseball cap, Nielsen finally left the park by walking through some thick bushes instead of using a pathway.

The scene was shocking for those who witnessed the 6' tall Nielsen, who looked at least a decade more than her 49 years.

Nielsen had a very public battle with the bottle after her 1987 divorce from Stallone -- they were married just two years -- and she most recently was in rehab in 2007.

Married five times, Nielsen has been a popular celebrity on the European reality show circuit for the last decade. She was a contestant on the German version of Dancing with the Stars in 2010 and I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here! in 2012.

She was absent from last month's funeral of her former stepson Sage Stallone.

Madonna project leaves landless villagers hungry

0
0
More than 200 families in village headman Chinkhota 1 under Traditional Authority Chitukula in Lilongwe district believe they have been cheated big time.

Two years ago, the villagers were forced to sell their land, which has resulted into hunger while their 117 acres farmland, once the bread basket of the area, has been rendered useless as it was allocated to a failed project by American pop idol Madonna.

The project in question is the multi-million girls' academy which never materialised.

The community is now counting the losses of a project that started with a lot of promise but ended sadly as currently the people have no land to cultivate crops.

Malawi News has also learnt that government officials allegedly pocketed millions of kwacha over the impoverished community by inflating figures in the process of compensation.

A visit by Malawi News to the area last weekend found villagers furious at the way the saga has unfolded, leaving village headman Chinkhota 1 to deal with the aftermath alone.

"Since the land was taken away from us, when government officials from Lilongwe led by a Mr. Mwenda, we have had to put up with a hoard of problems.

"We were cheated on the issue of compensation while our land was sacrificed because we were told if we did not release it government would take it anyway without compensation. This left the villagers with no choice.

"In fact, the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) showed us evidence in 2010 that we were indeed short-changed when they brought a cash register showing inflated figures," said Chinkhota.

Chinkhota claimed ACB officials declared the underpayment when it was revealed that those who got K40,000 were supposed to get K280,000 while villagers who received K80,000 would have walked home with K480,000.

Visible signs of desolation and abject poverty were evident as empty maize barns were seen during our tour while the land remained graded and graveled rendering it unsuitable for farming.

Chinkhota 1 says he regrets the decision to bring to his area a project that has left his subjects landless their land was taken up by Madonna's Raising Malawi Project.

Madonna adopted two children from Malawi, David Banda and Mercy James in 2006 and 2009 respectively.

Last year, the pop star announced that she will no longer build the multi-million dollar girls academy she promised.

But despite the villagers pointing fingers at the Lilongwe District Council as the architects of the problem, District Commissioner Paul Kalilombe blamed it on the confusion that ensued at the beginning of the project.

"The process was done in a transparent manner as all key stakeholders including the villagers were briefed on the exercise," said Kalilombe.

"The villagers might have felt aggrieved and cheated because initially procedures were not followed. Raising Malawi initially dealt with the villagers directly and the prices quoted for the land were indeed relatively higher."

But Kalilombe said upon the realization that the land was part of the city planning area thus under the jurisdiction of government, the Department of Lands was involved in the assessment together with the council and other stakeholders.

"It is true that the figures calculated using government guidelines were not in tandem with what the villagers had quoted Raising Malawi earlier. ACB took up the matter but we have not had any feedback on the progress nor the results of the investigation. No council officials have been charged or convicted.

"To make it clear, it was the Department of Lands that came up with the figures and not Lilongwe District Council," he added.

According to Kalilombe, K22 million was dispensed in compensation to the villagers, although some gave up their land for free.

Kalilombe also acknowledged the food problems saying government, through the council will assist those that are food insecure once assessments are conducted.

He ruled out the possibility of the people getting back the land.

"In agreeing to receive compensation, the villagers waived their rights to the land and a lease document was issued in favour of Raising Malawi. It was assumed that the compensation would be used to acquire alternative land or a means of survival for the villagers," he said.

When contacted, the ACB said it had concluded its investigations.

"Indeed ACB commenced and concluded investigations into the matter. The file at the moment is with the Bureau's Prosecutions and Legal Section for them to issue a legal opinion on the investigations team's findings and recommendations," said Egrita Ndala, the bureau's senior public relations officer.

"The Bureau cannot divulge the findings of the investigations at this point as the information is not yet in the public domain. Suffice to say that the matter is being given required attention by the Anti-Corruption Bureau," she said.

Raising Malawi officials, whose charity organisation was founded by Madonna and Micheal Berg in 2006, could not be reached for comment.

Madonna, through her organisation, started working on the site and are said to have spent US$3.8 million (about K1 billion) in 2010. The launch took place in 2011.

'Catfish: The TV Show': MTV delves into online relationships

Photobucket

MTV, home of "Next" and "Date My Mom," will launch a very different kind of show about dating and relationships in the fall.

"Catfish: The TV Show," which premieres in November, will follow people who have been in passionate online relationships as they meet their would-be soulmates in person for the first time. It's based on the 2010 documentary "Catfish," and the movie's star, Nev Schulman, guides the show's subjects through their journey.

It's a curious jumping-off point for a docu-series, since A) more than a few people questioned the movie's authenticity when it was released and B) Schulman got a rather large surprise when he traveled to meet the girl he had met online. Similar things happen to participants in the show, but Schulman says it's not all about pulling the rug out from under people.

"Whether or not two people are totally lying to each other and it turns out to be a huge disaster, that's only the first part of the story," Schulman said Friday (Aug. 3) at the TV Critics Association press tour. "We then want to know why they are doing it, who they are, what they are feeling, what led them to this place, and why that resonates with thousands of other young people who have the same feelings, who don't have someone to talk to or don't know how to express themselves."

Executive producer Tom Forman also stresses that "Catfish" won't just tell "stories of deception."

"We've also stumbled into some love stories," Forman says. "... We found people who are exactly who they say they are. We are putting those on television, too. We find people who are willing to get past an initial deception and really do make a connection at the end -- in person and in real life. That's been really heartwarming. So I think, when we set out, we really don't how it's going to end: good, bad, or in the middle somewhere."

Max Joseph, a filmmaker who goes on the road with Schulman in the show, says "Catfish" will also delve into the motives of people who put up a false front online.

"We've seen everything from just long-distance lovers to revenge," Joseph says. "The motivations for the person to maybe deceive the other person could have to do with something like revenge, or could have to do with poor self-image or insecurity. So it really runs the gamut."

"Catfish: The TV Show" is set to premiere Nov. 12 on MTV.

'I HAVE BEATEN HIM!' Tweeting Dutch judo medallist confronts 'drunken' spectator at Olympic Stadium

0
0

A judo competitor tonight claimed to have 'beaten' a spectator who threw a bottle on to the athletics track in the Olympic Stadium shortly before Usain Bolt sprinted to victory in the men's 100 metres.

Dutch judo medallist Edith Bosch was apparently at the Olympic Stadium in London when the missile was hurled on to the track, narrowly missing the athletes.

She posted on Twitter in Dutch a message which, when translated into English, reads: 'A drunken guest throws a bottle for me on the track! I HAVE BEATEN HIM.... Unbelievable! # angry # disrespectful'.

Pictures showed the missile coming on to the track as the sprinters took their marks for the most eagerly awaited athletics race of London 2012.

None of the sprinters were injured, and the race started first time. Bolt won the race in an Olympic record time of 9.63 seconds.

His Jamaican compatriot Yohan Blake took silver in a time of 9.75 seconds and American Justin Gatlin took bronze in 9.79.

Speaking after the race, Gatlin said: 'It was a little distraction and I didn't know what it was.

'But when you're in those blocks and the whole stadium's quiet you can hear a pin drop.'

The suspect is being held in police custody at an east London police station on suspicion of causing a public nuisance.

Gatlin said the incident had not affected the race.

'You just have to block it out and go out there and do what you got to do,' he said. 'You can't complain about that, the race went on and it was a great race.'

Bolt said he had been unaware of the incident. Asked whether he knew anything about it, he said: 'No, I keep hearing that.

'I don't know who would have done that.'

Blake said: 'I was so focused I didn't see anything.

'I was so focused on just running to the line.'

Bosch, 32, won a bronze medal in the judo at London 2012. Her Olympic debut was at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, where she finished seventh. She won a silver medal in Athens in 2004 and a bronze in Beijing in 2008.

Gabby Douglas Hair Comments Confuse The Olympic Gymnast

Women's gymnastics all-around champion Gabby Douglas likes her hairstyle just fine, thanks.

The 16-year-old said Sunday she was a little confused when she logged onto her computer after winning her second gold medal in three days and discovered people were debating her pulled-back look.

"I don't know where this is coming from. What's wrong with my hair?" said Douglas, the first U.S. gymnast to win gold in team and all-around competition. "I'm like, `I just made history and people are focused on my hair?' It can be bald or short, it doesn't matter about (my) hair."

Douglas uses gel, clips and a ponytail holder to keep things in place while she competes, a style she's worn for years.

"Nothing is going to change," she said. "I'm going to wear my hair like this during beam and bar finals. You might as well just stop talking about it."

The bubbly teenager is the first African-American gymnast to win her sport's biggest prize. She had no idea she was lighting up social media until she Googled herself hours after winning her gold medal.

"I don't think people should be worried about that," she said. "We're all champions and we're all winners. I just say that it's kind of, a stupid and crazy thought to think about my hair."
