'Grindin', 'Milkshake', 'Southern Hospitality', 'Excuse Me Miss', 'Drop it Like its Hot', 'Shake it Fast' are songs we all remember and still listen today. As fans of these songs and abundance of other hits, we obvious (I hope tbh) know who produced these jams. If you don't know who, they used to go by the name:
The Neptunes The Neptunes consisted Chad Hugo and Pharrell Williams from the state of Virginia who first came on the scene co-producing 'Rump Shaker' by Wreckx-N-Effect with Teddy Riley who discovered the duo. Now Chad Hugo is retired where Pharrell is still making hits like 'Blurred Lines' by Robin Thicke and 'Be Alright' by Kendrick Lamar.
But the reason for this list is talk about the songs by The Neptunes that
to me that are either underrated or songs most have slept on. This list will be first in a series where I'll highlight very known producers underrated/less popular songs.
Now lets start with:
I Still Love You by
702From their album Star (2003) 'I Still Love You' became a cult classic on the R&B scene and R&B radio stations. The lead single and only single 'Star' didn't do much on the charts or the radio stations while this song at least reached #49 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart. I believe this song can go along aside their more popular hits like 'Steelo' and 'Where My Girls At'.
Touch by
OmarionAfter leaving B2K to pursue a solo career, Omarion released the album O (2005). The album had a few minor hits which includes Touch where it only went peaked at #94 on the Hot 100 and #35 on R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks charts (The song O peaked higher on both charts). Along with the song, the video is also underrated where Omarion shows off his dancing skills with dancer Danielle Polanco as they dance down the streets after Omarion sees her outside a club.
Please Don't Mind -
Philly's Most WantedThe duo that consisted of Al "Boo-Bonic" Holly and Joel "Mr. Man" Witherspoon or better known as Philly's Most Wanted broke in the business as affiliates of The Neputunes. Their album Get Down or Lay Down (2001) was entirely produced by The Neptunes where other songs such as 'Cross the Border' and 'Y'all Can't Never Hurt Us' were also minor hits as 'Please Don't Mind'. But another reason other than being underrated, I added this song because it sounds very familiar, I think you all know it and the know the lyrics:
Use Your Heart–
SWVAs a somewhat unknown production team, The Neptunes helped produced SWV's Right Here (Remix) along with Teddy Riley where Pharrell is 'chanting "S...The double...The U...The V!" during the song'.
Many forget after their debut album SWV had many more hits including 'Use Your Heart' from the album New Beginning (1996). The song peaked at #6 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and #22 on the Hot 100 where The Neptunes wrote and produced with Pharrell singing along on the chorus.
Margarita–
Sleepy BrownAfter being a featured artist on many OutKast songs and releasing 2 previous albums, Sleepy Brown released Mr. Brown (2006) where the single Margarita appeared. The song went to #8 on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles chart but went no where afterwards. Its a shame it wasn't hit because the song is still a jam and I'm still playing 10 years later.
