How was your Friday night, ONTD?
Watchers wonder whether Walter White would whitewash it away.
If Walt, played by Bryan Cranston, could go back to the way things were at the very beginning of Breaking Bad, would he do it?
Would Walt trade health and boredom for sickness and adrenaline?
"It's an interesting hypothetical," agreed Cranston, whose acclaimed series returns for its fifth and final season (although it'll be split over two summers), Sunday on AMC.
"We've all played that game around the dinner table, 'What would you do if you had a year to live? What would you do for a million dollars?' And Walt is living that life. It's not hypothetical to him.
"So for the first time really in his life, he has been living it. There's something very seductive about that."
Seduction is the code word for Breaking Bad as it has racked up awards in inverse proportion to Walt's moral descent.
Cranston won three straight Emmy Awards for outstanding lead actor in a drama (2008, 2009, 2010), and possibly the only reason he didn't win in 2011 was that the airing of the fourth season missed the Emmy eligibility window (you're welcome, Kyle Chandler of Friday Night Lights). The height of trophy recognition for Breaking Bad came at the 2010 Emmys, when Cranston's victory was complemented by a win for Aaron Paul -- who plays Walt's partner-in-crime Jesse Pinkman -- as outstanding supporting actor.
The original premise of Breaking Bad was simple enough. Walt was a bland nobody, teaching high school chemistry, when he learned he was dying of cancer. Determined to secure his family's financial future, Walt started cooking crystal meth and entered into a distribution partnership with a former student, Jesse.
Where Breaking Bad has gone from there has been astonishing to watch. In essence Cranston has played three or four transformational characters, all within the fragile body of Walt.
"The way we've been conditioned to think is that characters are one-dimensional," Cranston said. "Oh, he's a good guy. Oh, he's a bad guy. Oh, he's troubled. Oh, she's the vixen. Oh, she's the sex-pot. Oh, she's the manipulator. But what we really are is an amalgam of all these things.
"When I heard that Vince (Gilligan, Breaking Bad creator) wanted to turn this guy from Mr. Chips to Scarface, I thought, well, you don't just go from A to Z. There are steps. And in order to justifiably turn this guy, we have to witness and experience these steps."
As Season 4 of Breaking Bad ended (spoiler alert: up-to-date plot points are discussed in the following paragraphs), Walt had just engineered the stunning and violent removal of drug-lord Gustavo "Gus" Fring, played by Giancarlo Esposito. The things Walt did to achieve this, including endangering the life of an innocent child, were chilling.
So now what happens? With his cancer currently in remission, will Walt retreat to the safety of his former existence? Or, keeping in mind the economic factors at play, does Walt have the desire -- and more importantly the guts -- to become the new Gus?
"Walt has just defeated the mastermind, he outwitted the champion," Cranston said. "Bobby Fischer just beat Boris Spassky.
"Instead of becoming a shrinking violet, Walt has puffed out his chest and is saying, 'You're damn right. Look what I just did. I'm a man, and I'm going to go out on my terms.' "
Early in the first episode of the new season, there's a soft but weighty verbal exchange between Walt and his wife Skyler, played by Anna Gunn.
Walt: "Are you going to show some sort of mild relief that I'm alive?"
Skyler: "I am relieved, Walt. And scared."
Walt: "Scared? Scared of what?"
That, according to Cranston, is the realization at the heart of Breaking Bad.
"What I believe from playing Walter White is that any person is capable of being dangerous," Cranston said. "Look at where Walter came from. Soft, meek, put-upon, intimidated, worried, embarrassed, humiliated. Then the diagnosis, and for once he made a bold move.
"So say he had a chance to go back to the old Walt, when he was teacher Walt, depressed, looking into a sea of apathy with his students, but he can live another 20 years. Or, the next two years are going to be the most exciting he's ever had at any time, and he comes out on top for two years, and he really lives it. What would you do?
"Hmmm, I don't know. It's not so clear-cut."

One more day! Who is excited?
Nicole Scherzinger is angry with boyfriend Lewis Hamilton after it emerged he partied with a group of 10 women in a penthouse hotel suite earlier this week.
The racing driver had been out with American rapper J. Cole before heading back to London's May Fair Hotel with the party - which included a couple of his long-time friends, staying up dancing and spraying champagne until 5.30am.
The former Pussycat Doll, who is now a judge on the UK version of X Factor, is said to be 'angry and embarrassed' by the normally straight-laced Hamilton's behaviour.
A source said: 'Yes she's angry, he's embarrassed her. It's not his typical behaviour, but of course she's not happy. However she knows he hasn't done anything wrong, but she's angry that he's been seen out like this while she's back in America.'
Claudia Martinez and Emily Tudor, who were among the guests invited back to the hotel, revealed to The Sun that Lewis was having so much fun at the penthouse suite in the venue he even sprayed the walls with champagne.
Emily said: 'It was huge, there was a kitchen, two bathrooms, two bedrooms and a huge lounge. Lots of people were chilling in the main room, people were smoking on the balcony.
'At one point, Lewis was spraying champagne all over the room like he had just won a race.'
Hamilton raised eyebrows after he was seen kissing a woman, later revealed as old friend Phreeda Sharp (pictured below).
He tweeted soon after: 'Phreeda is like my sister, a good mate to me n Nicole. Can't say goodbye 2 friends without it being seen as a mystery kiss.'
Nicole - who is currently in Los Angeles - is at present readying herself for her new role as a judge on the UK version of the X Factor.
The couple have struggled at times to make their long-distance relationship work because of Hamilton's jet-set lifestyle as a Formula One driver.

Talk about a mad dash.
Fans went wild as Kim Kardashian, Kanye West, Khloé Kardashian Odom and Kris Jenner stopped by the grand opening of the Kardashian sisters' new DASH store on Melrose Boulevard in West Hollywood Friday, stopping to take pictures with dozens of people crowded outside the store.
Kimye arrived together in the E! reality starlet's black Rolls-Royce, holding hands as they made their way through the crazy crowd, and later canoodled inside of the store.
"Dash LA opens today on Melrose!!!" Kim tweeted Friday. "I'm so excited! We've worked so hard to get this going! Can't wait for you all to see it!"
It's safe to say Kim probably wasn't as excited about the parking ticket she received for parking in a red zone, however.
But, the Keeping Up With the Kardashians star didn't let that ruin her mood, tweeting her excitement about the event after she left with her rapper beau.
"Went to DASH today in LA! We finally opened our new store, I couldn't be prouder of our Dash Dolls @MissRoyaa & @brittaneyelise. Love u guys," Kim wrote Friday evening.
Tune in to Keeping Up With the Kardashians Sunday at 9 p.m.
'Big Brother 14's' Jodi Rollins: 'I'm upset ... they made it seem like there was still hope'
Jodi Rollins was quite surprisingly sent home the first night in the "Big Brother 14" house, which both she and Zap2it think was kind of unfair. Plus, she just Friday (July 13) found out there's no chance she's going back in the house, despite thinking for a week there would be some twist that migtht bring her back.
"I'm upset now, actually. Not happy," says Jodi. "They made it seem like there was still hope, so I just kind of found out that there wasn't. So I'm kind of upset. [I thought] maybe there'd be a twist that I could go back in the house, so that doesn't seem to be happening and I just found that out."
We had to ask if Jodi feels like it was a waste of her time, since she went through the whole process and only spent a few hours in the house. But she says it wasn't a waste.
"I don't feel like it was a waste of my time because it was neat to actually be in the house. I've watched since Season 1, it was a dream come true. I was excited, so it wasn't a waste. But it's a big disappointment," says Jodi.
"I have a theory as to why I'm not in the house ... older people never win this game and black women never win this game and I'm an older black woman," Jodi continues. "I'm not saying anybody's racist at all. When it comes to money, you have to make a decision based on what you think people will do. If you're looking at who's going to win the game, I'm not who you'd want. In this case, I think [Dan] didn't choose me for those reasons"
So any bitterness towards Dan?
"No, I'm not bitter at all towards him. I'm disappointed. He made the wrong decision, but no, not bitter to him at all," says Jodi. "But I knew he didn't believe in me from the get-go. I was last chosen, so... that didn't feel good either."
Even though her time was short in the house, we were curious who Jodi thinks are the strongest and weakest players in the game.
"Definitely Shane [is the strongest], I feel like he could be a force to be reckoned with," says Jodi. "Frank, because I'm suspicious of Frank, still waters run deep. He didn't give off a lot of information. I think those are the main two."
"[The weakest] are actually, the girls on my team. Kara is really sweet, but she 'had to pee and had to sit down and felt faint and felt tired and needed a cigarette and it's like - this is the BIg Brother house. So I think she's definitely one of the weaker ones."
FYI: This is the second season a black person was eliminated first. Also a white man eliminated her.The cast is now all white for the rest of the season.

Magic is coming! And what the heck does that mean? Once Upon a Time producers and cast members teased season 2 at Comic-Con this morning.
The Panel: Jennifer Morrison, Josh Dallas, Ginnifer Goodwin, Lana Parrilla, Megan Ory, Emilie de Ravin, Adam Horowitz, and Edward Kitsiss
+ Captain Hook is coming!
+We will find out the identity of Henry’s father — and Jennifer Morrison knows who it is! “We talked about it early on,” she said. Kitsis’ tease? “I think Goofy is probably going to be Henry’s father,” he joked. “We gotta give Emma more credit here,” Morrison retorted.
+ We will learn the mythical identity of Dr. Whale this season.
+ There’s room for Kristin Bauer van Straten to return as Maleficent! “I didn’t see her body,” said Horowitz.
+ What DOES it mean that “Magic is coming”? “I wonder if we will find that out. I bet you we will have to watch season 2,” said Kitsis. “We don’t know if there’s anything to go back to.” Horowitz added: “Who knows if there’s anything there?”
+ The first few episodes will not disappoint. “I never could have conceived of the brilliance that is the first couple of scripts,” said Goodwin. “I can say that as an audience member it’s exactly what I’d want to see.” Added Kitsis: “The show is not going to change from the one you loved last year…we’re still going to go back and forth and meet new people along the way. “
+ We will find out what happened to Mr. Gold’s son Bae this season.
A no-face sneak peek at CAPTAIN HOOK, who was seen breaking into the pawnshop to steal (what else?) a hook from the glass cabinet! The producers saved this big moment for the very end of the panel, and it got a HUGE reaction from the crowd.
Earlier, they showed a very funny promo for the Once Upon a Time season 1 DVD that was a parody of a Match.com commercial. The commercial for Singlebrooke.com featured all the characters giving their web-cam dating profiles.
At 16-years-old and with a growing fan base, singer Austin Mahone showed exactly why he is being labelled the 'new Justin Bieber'[...].
The rising star showed off his boyish good looks as he stripped down to his swimming shorts for a dip in the Miami ocean.
He even had the obligatory celebrity date - accompanied by Hailey Baldwin, daughter of actor Stephen.

EW met up with comedian (and avid comic book fan) Patton Oswalt at The Spreckels Theatre in San Diego to hear how he’s enjoying Comic-Con and get a behind-the-scenes look at how he prepares for the big comedy show he does during the event every year.
We also asked what he thinks of the Daniel Tosh rape joke controversy. His level-headed response: “Obviously, I don’t agree with what he said, and I don’t agree with how he said it, but I think it’s very dangerous to create an atmosphere where people can’t f— up.”
Not another Comic-Con Post
The greatest secret in Hollywood may have been exposed by a police officer in the sleepy town of Bedford Hills, NY ... when in his police report, he referred to Blake Lively as the wife of Ryan Reynolds!!!!!
Or he just made an assumption, we'll explain ...
Reynolds filed a police report on July 8 after he claimed he was being followed by a photographer. An officer came out to investigate and he described the encounter by saying:
The name of the woman allegedly married to Reynolds was redacted from the report, but several photos of Reynolds and Lively were taken the week of the incident.
And in case you think it was a one time slip, check out the last paragraph of the report:
We called the Bedford PD to check with the officer about what made him think the couple -- who has been dating since last October -- was actually married. Cops wouldn't talk.
Sources close to Blake tell TMZ the report is a mistake and the two are NOT married.
Hunting for some pageviews, huh, TMZ?
Would you care if they really did get secretly married?
Yes! Good news are in for those of you who were affected by the ongoing kerfuffle between Dish and AMC: the TV network just announced it'll be live streaming the return of Walter White and Jesse Pinkman on its website. As you're likely aware, this announcement comes shortly after Dish Network revealed it was dropping the home of Breaking Bad and Mad Men from its lineup, after both parties couldn't reach a deal to keep the channel in place -- if there ever was one on the table to begin with. Nevertheless, AMC's taken it to the interwebs to stand its ground, and has rolled out a page inviting Dish customers to sign up for the free live stream of the season premiere this Sunday. Notably, TechCrunch reports an AMC rep told the site that "there's no real way for the network to verify that viewers are actually Dish subscribers," which pretty much opens the doors to anyone wanting to join the Season Five fun. The link to the nice streaming gesture is down below, so give it a bookmark if you're planning on tuning in.

They may have found fame together on The X Factor but One Direction's Louis Tomlinson clearly has no loyalty to Rebecca Ferguson.
Not even the fact she dated his bandmate Zayn Malik was enough to stop the singer hitting back at Rebecca after she blasted the management team they share on Twitter.
When Ferguson, 25, sensationally sacked her handlers after accusing them of overworking her, Louis waded in with his opinion.
in a message, he wrote
He went on to write to his own followers 'We’re in the position that others dream of. We love you guys. You put us here! Don’t think its forgotten
'Our success is down to two things, hard hard work but primarily you guys! That’s why we owe it all to you'
However, Rebecca refused to get involved in a row with Louis and tweeted
She further claimed she was simply given a can of coke after the incident and told to go and complete a pre-arranged interview.
The normally soft-spoken Liverpool songstress showed her fiery side as she lashed out and even threatened to take the unnamed company to court.
a series of tweets, she wrote ‘resorting to stalking my twitter the same people that watched me collapse ... And gave me a can of coke and said now go do your interview .
‘The same people that worked me so much I collapsed and had to say stop!!! I need to see my children you need to give me time off vile!!!!
‘Was so exhausted I couldn't physically walk on my own but was still told I had to work!!! #vile (sic).'
he qualified legal secretary added '‘See you in court!!! #greedyvermon
'Be nice to have a nice new responsible caring management team!! Who care for me and my childrens well being #seeyouincourt!!! (sic).’
Rebecca, 25, has had a busy schedule lately.
Earlier this week she attended the UJA Federation of New York Music Visionaries of the Year Luncheon in the Big Apple.
Today at its Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2012, Marvel Stuios announced two upcoming films: "Guardians of the Galaxy," coming August 1, 2014, and displayed test footage for the very first time for "Ant-Man," to be directed by Edgar Wright.
With the announcement came the reveal of the first concept art for "Guardians of the Galaxy" by Charlie Wen, as well as logos for both films.
In addition, Marvel Studios announced the official titles to the Thor and Captain America sequels: "Thor: The Dark World," in theaters November 8, 2013, and "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," in theaters April 4, 2014.
Check out all logos, plus the just-released "Iron Man 3" logo, and as always stay tuned to Marvel.com for more on Marvel Studios' upcoming slate.
Marvel announces its upcoming slate at Comic-Con
Robert Downey Jr. made a Tony Stark-like entrance Saturday into the San Diego Convention Center's largest exhibition hall, dancing up through the aisles among more than 6,000 fans.
The "Iron Man" star joined Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige at Comic-Con to show footage from the film, due next summer, and announce the studio's upcoming superhero film slate. He appeared while wearing the right hand of his "Iron Man" costume with a suit and tie.
The "Iron Man 3" clip showed Stark's latest incarnation of his super suit, pieces of which fly across his workshop and attach themselves to his body. It showed his cliffside compound crumbling into the sea and his cache of Iron Man suits being blasted to bits.
The footage also offered a look at Sir Ben Kingsley as the villain Mandarin and franchise newcomers Guy Pearce and Rebecca Hall, along with the return of Gwyneth Paltrow's Pepper Potts, Don Cheadle's James Rhodes and Jon Favreau's Happy Hogan.
Favreau, who directed the first two "Iron Man" films, served as an executive producer on the third installment.
"I feel like a proud grandfather who doesn't have to change the diapers but gets to play with the baby," Favreau said, appearing on the Marvel panel with Cheadle and "Iron Man 3" director Shane Black.
Black said the film explores the roots of Stark's mythology and feels like a culmination to the trilogy.
As to whether there could be more "Iron Man" movies after this one, Downey said: "The future is uncertain."
"I'm super happy and this has been just an amazing journey," he said.
Feige also announced other upcoming Marvel movies, including "Thor: The Dark World," "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," the anticipated "Guardians of the Galaxy" and "Ant Man."
Director Edgar Wright made a surprise appearance at the panel and showed his test shots for the big-screen adaptation.
"I can reveal that Ant Man has been here the whole day," Wright said of the diminutive superhero. "In fact, he was here to spy on the `Pacific Rim' panel," where Guillermo del Toro gave a look at his giant-robot-versus-massive-monsters flick earlier Saturday.
& New Iron Man Armor was revealed

Silent HIll: Revelation in 3D is a sequel to the original Silent Hill movie, as well as based off of the third version of the Silent Hill video game. There are terrified, screaming, cute blonde girls and completely creepy mannequin creatures that make me shiver just imagining them. They panel released some BIG news that you must read on to find out.
Bassett brought two clips from the film - "the only PG-13 clips we could find; the rest of it is a really hard R with some terrifying stuff in it." - and he wasn't wrong. We were as cynical about this film - a long-delayed sequel to the original and slightly underwhelming Christophe Gans film from 2006, based on the successful videogame series - but it looks like Bassett has captured the game's terrifying and surreal flavour. In particular, this is based on Silent Hill 3. "Silent Hill 2 deserves a movie all of its own," laughed Bassett.
The first sequence shows heroine Heather Mason (Adelaide Clemens) trying to escape the evil clutches of what can only be described as an evil, hideous, mannequin-spider. That is to say, it's a spider composed of the arms, legs and living faces of mannequins that looks like it could be the pet of Pan's Labyrinth's Pale Man.
And the second sequence shows Mason struggling to free hero Vincent Carter (Game Of Thrones' Kit Harrington, making this something of a GoT spin-off, as Sean Bean returns from the first film) from an invidious position: he's strapped to a hospital gurney, and surrounded by frozen statues of faceless, horrible nurses, who are clutching cleavers and rusty-looking knives. And as he moves, they move closer, and closer...*posted here
"Is it possible to live up to fan expectations?" mused Bassett, who looks like he's gone a long way towards doing so. "I know there are some proper Silent Hill fans who are immersed in the world and their knowledge surpasses me. But the notion is that this has to be a pure Silent Hill movie. The aesthetic is there, the monsters are there, the backgrounds are there. I want to scare the shit out of you on Halloween. That is my principal job."
We'll find out for sure whether Bassett and co. succeeded when Silent Hill: Revelation 3D (and it was shot in 3D; something of a revelation itself in these post-conversion times) opens on Halloween. Which, last time we checked, was on October 31.
Bassett began by discussing the early casting process for the film. ”Kit (Harrington) came in to audition for me and Game of Thrones had not been shown yet, and I knew that it was going to be him in this role. Then Game of Thrones came out and suddenly we’ve got John Snow in our movie! It’s weird the way things work like that because this really is a small industry in some cases.”
The big, big news, that makes me shake with fear because I live near it, is that that they’re bringing Silent Hill to Universal Studios Halloween Horror nights. (I can see Universal Studios Hollywood from my roof. When you go and scream your head off, think of me.)
